  • Got the new shaft in via FedEx and it's a beaut, Clark! In this vid I finish up the job and reattach the sidecar to the bike.

yea clunking weirdly and couldn't find any other cause, this solved it. There's a damper joint inside which apparently fails pretty common.

Im curious if the splines are the same from the magna and shadows make an easy swap

Not sure. My gut is that I doubt it.

Mine leaking where the three bolts come together. Why? Thxs,,

There’s a seal inside the swing arm side I think (it’s been awhile) where the diff assembly slips in and that is supposed to keep the small amount of gear oil inside where that damper joint is. Either that seal is bad or the seal inside the differential itself is bad. Or both. Get a serve manual. Easily found online.

Where can I get the drive shaft assembly?

      EBay is your best bet.

New sub here. Can you clarify with what the issue was leading you to change the drive shaft? I have an 83 magna that’s “slipping” at times. Changed the clutch pack and didn’t help.
    Thanks.

Thanks for watching and subscribing. It was Clunking under hard 1st gear acceleration like a feeling the engine was loose in the mounts. What do you mean by slipping? Any noises when it does this?

When riding you lose power to the tire, higher rpm’s and the bike “jumps” a bit. Hard to describe.

And a clunk when it occurs. Got the shaft apart and don’t see anything glaringly obvious but I have an untrained eye.

Check splines. Wonder if any splines are bad. Splines anywhere on the shaft and at the final drive and the output bevel gear. Anywhere the driveshaft connects. If they’re fine, you may have transmission issues where it’s jumping out of gear. If it’s not that it has to be your clutch still. If you’re using synthetic oil get rid of that crap before any major diagnostics aside from what you’re doing already. Run regular wet clutch oil or Shell Rotella T4 conventional. That oil is JASO MA/2 classified and I run it in all my stuff with zero issues.

Don't understand your question, are you referring to the splines? If so, have no idea. I scrapped the old driveshaft right after this job. Please clarify if its something else.

@@MotoRestoFL Sorry for the confusion. I purchased 2 bikes and will pick them up shortly. One of the is a Honda Shadow 750. It's a shaft drive. I was planning on either building a sidecar or making the Shadow into a trike for my 70 lb Dog Ike to ride with me. Was trying to figure out the best way to build a differential for it. Any thoughts on my future project?

@@robertmcpherson4298 yea you got me on that. I’d look for a specific trike kit or modify a Wing trike kit. As for sidecars, that’s a rabbit hole 🕳 of sorts unless experienced in setup and custom fab. If you’re looking to have someone build it, I’d highly recommend Claude Stanley Freedom Sidecars in Pennsylvania. Thanks for watching.
