Those lessons learned from heart felt movies/ cartoons were absolutely critical for our social development. Fairy tales were all about teaching little ones about the social world we live in.... They went away and no one filled the gap. A penny saved is a penny earned! Make hay when the sun shines! By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail! Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame! Well done is better than well said! Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75! I can't say how much these little sayings molded my life. My favorite is one my Grandad said - " Life is such a personal thing, and yet we all live there." . I hear that in my head every day.
I'm 52 and I have used that saying several times in the last two years. Your record player montage got me thinking that I haven't played a record on a player in over 40 years. I distinctly remember a square (believe it or not) "record" that came on the back of a cereal box when I was a kid in the 70's. You had to gently break the perforations and remove it from back of the box and you could play that square cardboard 45 on a record player. I think it was supposed to be scary so maybe it was Boo Berries or something like that. As you get older a lot of these fun memories randomly pop into your head from the 70s and 80s which to me were the best times growing up. Great episode as always!
Without a doubt, it helped make us tougher. We got cut, scratched, bruised, and even broken bones periodically. All badges of courage that helped us learn what and what not to do. I specifically remember those metal pipe monkey bars! I got a lot of bumps and bruises on them. And played on them daily in school. Thanks.
I remember as a kid playing soccer every Saturday morning. We had organized games at the exact same time Saturday morning cartoons were coming on. One day my coach saw me moping, and he asked what was wrong. When I told him I was missing Saturday morning cartoons every single week, he laughed and mumbled under his breath “sometimes I forget these are just children “. Those cartoons meant a great deal to me. It’s a darn shame that they don’t show them anymore.
One thing about the old days I lament losing is playing neighborhood baseball. No uniforms, no umpires and no parents. We solved our conflicts ourselves. We mowed the grass with our father's lawnmowers and made our own bases, repaired our bats when they broke and wrapped electrical tape on the baseball when it was coming apart. But we learned how to resolve disputes and still remain friends. I never see kids playing baseball today unless they are wearing uniforms. -Tom
many years ago -i added a spring loaded retractable lanyard from a security badge - on two of my drill presses, it holds the chuck key, giving easy access and never misplaced - and it works exactly as you thought. - i suggest you and all your viewers try it.
I use a vintage Evans K-1 retractable Key Caddy for my chuck key. It's from the same era as my Craftsman drill press and the braided metal line is just too cool.

Bambi was a tearjerker in parts but what as an adult I think about the weird thing that Bambi was a male deer but any time you see someone named Bambi today it's a girl. In my eighth grade English class, the teacher had the entire year about fairy tales. The original stories by the Brothers Grimm were just that. Grim. Cinderella was pretty gruesome. We loved getting records whether in books or sometimes on cereal boxes. Remember them? We were tough but our parents were tougher. My parents were children of the depression. Between that and WWII everyone did what they had to do with what they had available and for a few years after the war many basics were still scarce. It was good seeing you today. We have a bunch of High School kids working in the Hardware store and I'm convinced they wouldn't last long if they were thrown back to the 60s and 70s when I was growing up. And we all knew our Fathers and Grandfathers were much tougher than us and we gave them respect. Those days are just about gone.
Back in the day! When we came home from school, first and foremost we did our homework. Then we did our Shores no questions asked. Nowadays my grandkids play games with the computer, or tablets.
Man….im a wuss compared to my grandfather!!! He did more work after work than most people I know today. That’s after he walked to and from work,carrying a 3’ iron wrench to tighten the bolts on his section of the railroad. Gandy dancer! My grandma missed the oranges 🍊 from her yard from the old country. Italy. So my grandfather planted her an orange tree.every fall he dug it up,wrapped it in wool,green,blankets and put it in the basement and every spring he replanted it. What a great video ! I am 58 yrs old, and can totally attest to my grandparents generation being tough, and resourceful. Monkey bars, gym equipment, and sports were ways to make us stronger, and healthier for that matter. We used to play "WAR" with toys guns, which prepared us for military service. Look at the military now ) : The cartoons were fantastic, because many taught us valuable lessons. Who remembers Saturday mornings watching School House Rock " I am just a bill ", and many others. They taught us how our government functions. Moments after watching your video, You Tube recommended a Walt Disney cartoon from 1945 " The ABCs of Hand Tools " I was fascinated. I remember seeing cartoons, similar or replayed from that time period, when I was a kid. They taught us important skills. Your right, the generation today is weak, and uninformed. Before television you had two sources of entertainment. The main one was radio. You received news casts, live music by entertainers, then serial shows by actors. The other source was movie theaters. My mother told me that before the movie would be news reels, then a cartoon would be next and then the movie. The cartoon was for the kids because it was a family event to go to. Movies always based on a morale. Disney had the vision to make movies that parents would enjoy by adding music through the movie so the would bring kids to see and ticket sales improved. Find old recordings of radio shows and watch at night with the lights turned down for the experience of what it felt like. You really hear the emotions of the actors.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I know for a fact my parents generation was tougher, they made sure me and my brother didn’t have to endure what they did, and we didn’t have it easy. When we were old enough to work we went to it, chores, clean, empty the ashes, scrub the basement, wash windows. Our father was a shift worker, and when he wasn’t working at that job he had another, like our mother they never spent any idle time. I’d been living away from home at my first real job, home on a short vacation I asked my father what he did on his vacation when he was 21. “What vacation, there were none” this was the 30’s, if you weren’t at your machine tending to it, whether sickness, fever or the flu, someone else had your job and you were out. I’m thankful to have what I have; the refugees in those pictures were a different breed. God help us if we ever get to that. (Been away from videos for awhile, finding retirement after 56 years of work isn’t as easy as I thought.) Very interesting monologue John. Yes, kids were tougher back in the day (1950's for me). We had a book of fairy tales with illustrations that were really frightening! I put a powerful magnet on the side of my drill press and stick the chuck key on it. It never gets lost!
All that great stuff that we were exposed to as kids definitely helped us in my opinion and it is a shame that kids these days have no idea about a lot of it
I keep my Chuck keys handy with a retractable ID lanyard available from Amazon or EBay. They hold any reasonable weight chuck key and you don’t have any loose cables or such which may get caught in the chuck. Works for the chuck on the mini lathes also. They’re a game changer.
I think life toughens you up, all the disappointments and heartaches make you stronger, those younger than us will go through it too someday, you learn that life has it's ups and downs and dwell on the good stuff, not the bad.

I have a picture of a pipefitter crew that includes my grandfather at the same company that I still work for. Most of the men in the photo were born in the early 1900s or late 1800s. These were tough men and would put most men to shame today.

I personally don't think we should shield our young people too much from the harsh realities of life (and death) but what is better today is that people talk about stuff rather than bottling it all up, now that is a good thing I think !
John your right about older people. You hardly ever saw overweight people. My grandfather was born in 1902 . He was about 5 foot 7 160 pounds and tough as nails. He worked hard all his life and lived to be 81. Young people today are very soft and overweight. To many video games and no exercise! 😢
For a chuck key retriever, look for the small retractable reel used to keep fly fishing nippers attached to your fishing vest. I pick up loose chuck keys at estate and yard sales when I see them.

I was a VA ICU nurse in the last part of my work career. Some of the stories those old soldiers would tell would make me feel like I had a super easy life. One guy was the first POW in stalag 13. He had it tough for years. One guy had done all of the famous jumps behind enemy lines. He said when they fought it was kill or be killed and when they got back to base camp they would steal the general’s jeep and go to town to chase women and drink. They would come back to base camp with the jeep. I asked did the generals ever do anything to punish them? He said what was he going to do send him to the front? The women back home worked in factories to build things for war. Kids today think socialism is good and can’t define what a woman is. If this isn’t the End Times then God is passing on a good opportunity.
I remember reading that My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released on the same bill in 1988. I think to myself those kids must have been a mix of confused and traumatized when they walked out.
As far as I know a lot of 45's were made with that large hole because of jukeboxes it's a lot more forgiving for the mechanism to locate the record correctly.
I've found that since I've been living here at my house all alone, and I'm the only one using my tools etc, that I have no problems at all holding onto drill chuck keys, and all my tools. It was brutal back home on the farm with five of us, and then a hired guy or two around that place. Things always went missing, and got lost because of multiple people using stuff. Having just one person using tools sure makes a big difference, regarding putting tools away where they belong, and keeping track of them.
Bambi was the worst of all for a kid. We learned how to read along,operate a electric device and it taught you how to read. You could use those key retractable things the janitors had all theyre bike lock and skate keys on when we were in school for your chuck keys. Same thing just smaller.
My dad didn't and still doesn't like cartoons so I saw very few of them. Seeing those horrible animated things nowadays and looking back, it was a form of art! Hope you enjoy the show!
If you want a auto retract cable for a chuck key get one of the retract units nurses use for ID badges. I've seen ones that are very well made for constant use.

Man i miss those old cartoons they have continued some but completely changed them they dont even seem funny anymore. You are certainly right the kids are soft. I know boy scouts give out awards to all and know some get ranks just by crying. I worked with someone about 20s and they got stung by a bee on their neck and they were almost crying about it the entire day like even at lunch, a small knick and they almost want to run to an emergency room for a doctor. I did feel bad when the young kid got stung initially and was relieved they arent allergic to them but to hear about it 4 hours later and it hurts.

We had record players when I was a kid. We had a bunch of those Peter Pan records too. Kids and records don’t mix well though. I think mine was a Mickey Mouse version. Later we had cassettes. I think there were certain elements of our childhood made to toughen us up, especially boys.

I agree with you about the generations. I’m pushing 70 . My parents and others from ww 2 are the toughest people I was around. If we all were like them the United States would remain without question the leader of the world. They were not afraid of anything. The cartoons did make us smarter. We knew better then to do what we had watched. It was called common sense. My older kids watched cartoons and they did not do the stupid crap kids are doing like eating tide tablets. I have my hands full with my two younger daughters who will be 10 and 11 soon. They don’t scream on rafting trips, they want to experience it all. My wife and I did not teach fear to our kids. All 5 still try once and while to challenge us, they still loose. John the reason I have become so loyal to your show is common sense. It shows in everything you do except harbor freight, my opinion. We are a book of knowledge for our family . Thank you for reminding me of my past.
A few years ago there was a TV show in the UK called bad lads army. They took modern young thugs and sent them to wartime style bootcamp. There was ups and downs etc. But they brought in this old timer to talk to the lads about his time. What he said stuck with me. He was a criminal and petty theif before he was conscripted and sent to war. When asked about the softness of the modern youth and if they would be able to cope with ww3. Yes he said with complete confidence. When asked how he replied, because they'd have to.
We learned coping skills, and I don't mean the use of the saw.. All these mass shootings by kids these days...ZERO coping skills. My cousins, siblings and I were raised in pretty strict households but the adults never batted an eye at those 60's and 70's cartoons. My father and uncle were often laughing right along with us.

Many people I knew had parents from the "old country". These folks had a small habit of keeping a few gold coins stashed away for emergencies such as bribing a border guard to cross a closed border. Some of these people lived through two world wars, a depression, genocides and if from eastern Poland, a whole lot more..... People here in the US just have no idea.
The older generations were tougher, more resilient with more applicable and practical types of intelligence. The difficult part of some older folks today is assuming that because the younger generations on the whole have their lot softer and easier, that they are all soft and easy-this is the case for most of them, but not the case for all of them. There’s a George Orwell quote that comes to mind here: “Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that came after it.”

I know that most of it will be taken to the dump. When I cleaned out my Mother's home I was so sad to see what was important to her - so important that she had moved it a dozen times at least as my Father was in the military. It is 'stuff's but it is our life in stuff.

I keep my Chuck keys handy with a retractable ID lanyard available from Amazon or EBay. They hold any reasonable weight chuck key and you don’t have any loose cables or such which may get caught in the chuck.
Works for the chuck on the mini lathes also. They’re a game changer.
I think life toughens you up, all the disappointments and heartaches make you stronger, those younger than us will go through it too someday, you learn that life has it's ups and downs and dwell on the good stuff, not the bad.

It was not just animation, also movies for youngsters which had a mix of emotions. I recall my parents taking me to see Darby O'Gill and the little people when I was 6 or 7. The screaming Banshee character scared the heck out of me.

I have a picture of a pipefitter crew that includes my grandfather at the same company that I still work for. Most of the men in the photo were born in the early 1900s or late 1800s. These were tough men and would put most men to shame today.

Thanks John, very thought provoking, we were brought up with Tom & Jerry - the most violent show on TV ! I personally don't think we should shield our young people too much from the harsh realities of life (and death) but what is better today is that people talk about stuff rather than bottling it all up, now that is a good thing I think !
John your right about older people. You hardly ever saw overweight people. My grandfather was born in 1902 . He was about 5 foot 7 160 pounds and tough as nails. He worked hard all his life and lived to be 81. Young people today are very soft and overweight. To many video games and no exercise! 😢
For a chuck key retriever, look for the small retractable reel used to keep fly fishing nippers attached to your fishing vest. I pick up loose chuck keys at estate and yard sales when I see them.
There are similar devices for quilters' mini scissors.
I certainly learned how heavy anvils and pianos were from watching cartoons.
Anvils were very common in cartoons but it was years before I saw my first one! 🫣😂👍

I was a VA ICU nurse in the last part of my work career. Some of the stories those old soldiers would tell would make me feel like I had a super easy life. One guy was the first POW in stalag 13. He had it tough for years. One guy had done all of the famous jumps behind enemy lines. He said when they fought it was kill or be killed and when they got back to base camp they would steal the general’s jeep and go to town to chase women and drink. They would come back to base camp with the jeep. I asked did the generals ever do anything to punish them? He said what was he going to do send him to the front? The women back home worked in factories to build things for war. Kids today think socialism is good and can’t define what a woman is. If this isn’t the End Times then God is passing on a good opportunity.

As far as I know a lot of 45's were made with that large hole because of jukeboxes it's a lot more forgiving for the mechanism to locate the record correctly.

I've found that since I've been living here at my house all alone, and I'm the only one using my tools etc, that I have no problems at all holding onto drill chuck keys, and all my tools. It was brutal back home on the farm with five of us, and then a hired guy or two around that place. Things always went missing, and got lost because of multiple people using stuff. Having just one person using tools sure makes a big difference, regarding putting tools away where they belong, and keeping track of them.

Bambi was the worst of all for a kid. We learned how to read along,operate a electric device and it taught you how to read. You could use those key retractable things the janitors had all theyre bike lock and skate keys on when we were in school for your chuck keys. Same thing just smaller.
My dad didn't and still doesn't like cartoons so I saw very few of them. Seeing those horrible animated things nowadays and looking back, it was a form of art! Hope you enjoy the show!
If you want a auto retract cable for a chuck key get one of the retract units nurses use for ID badges. I've seen ones that are very well made for constant use.

Man i miss those old cartoons they have continued some but completely changed them they dont even seem funny anymore. You are certainly right the kids are soft. I know boy scouts give out awards to all and know some get ranks just by crying. I worked with someone about 20s and they got stung by a bee on their neck and they were almost crying about it the entire day like even at lunch, a small knick and they almost want to run to an emergency room for a doctor. I did feel bad when the young kid got stung initially and was relieved they arent allergic to them but to hear about it 4 hours later and it hurts.

We had record players when I was a kid. We had a bunch of those Peter Pan records too. Kids and records don’t mix well though. I think mine was a Mickey Mouse version. Later we had cassettes. I think there were certain elements of our childhood made to toughen us up, especially boys.

I agree with you about the generations. I’m pushing 70 . My parents and others from ww 2 are the toughest people I was around. If we all were like them the United States would remain without question the leader of the world. They were not afraid of anything. The cartoons did make us smarter. We knew better then to do what we had watched. It was called common sense. My older kids watched cartoons and they did not do the stupid crap kids are doing like eating tide tablets. I have my hands full with my two younger daughters who will be 10 and 11 soon. They don’t scream on rafting trips, they want to experience it all. My wife and I did not teach fear to our kids. All 5 still try once and while to challenge us, they still loose. John the reason I have become so loyal to your show is common sense. It shows in everything you do except harbor freight, my opinion. We are a book of knowledge for our family . Thank you for reminding me of my past.

A few years ago there was a TV show in the UK called bad lads army. They took modern young thugs and sent them to wartime style bootcamp. There was ups and downs etc. But they brought in this old timer to talk to the lads about his time. What he said stuck with me. He was a criminal and petty theif before he was conscripted and sent to war. When asked about the softness of the modern youth and if they would be able to cope with ww3. Yes he said with complete confidence. When asked how he replied, because they'd have to.

We learned coping skills, and I don't mean the use of the saw.. All these mass shootings by kids these days...ZERO coping skills. My cousins, siblings and I were raised in pretty strict households but the adults never batted an eye at those 60's and 70's cartoons. My father and uncle were often laughing right along with us.

When people feel emotions while watching anything it’s because they are fully immersed in the show. People who are unaffected usually aren’t letting themselves become one with the story. Bambi is meant to tug at your heart strings and it always does to me too.

Many people I knew had parents from the "old country". These folks had a small habit of keeping a few gold coins stashed away for emergencies such as bribing a border guard to cross a closed border. Some of these people lived through two world wars, a depression, genocides and if from eastern Poland, a whole lot more.....
People here in the US just have no idea.
The older generations were tougher, more resilient with more applicable and practical types of intelligence. The difficult part of some older folks today is assuming that because the younger generations on the whole have their lot softer and easier, that they are all soft and easy-this is the case for most of them, but not the case for all of them.
There’s a George Orwell quote that comes to mind here: “Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that came after it.”

I know that most of it will be taken to the dump. When I cleaned out my Mother's home I was so sad to see what was important to her - so important that she had moved it a dozen times at least as my Father was in the military. It is 'stuff's but it is our life in stuff.
