- This is Lauda's first testing of the McLaren MP4/1 (first Carbon-Fibre-Composite F1 wing car) in preparation of the 1982 F1 season assisted by his future teammate (John Watson), Team Owner (Ron Dennis) and F1 Engineer (John Barnard) - At Donnington late 1981.
Fascinating exchange between Lauda and Watson on their feelings when driving the McLaren and how to drive it (very much different views: being gentle vs. being brutal with the car).
Watson then talks about graining on one set of tyres… but Lauda seems more interested in getting lunch at that point 😊
Here is the transcript summary of the exchange:
Lauda: “It [the McLaren] all feels like solid… The car understeers …grabs again... and understeers again”
Watson: “Should not be so much as you say”
Lauda: “Maybe I’m not going quick enough”
Watson: “I think… it will be more one thing… either understeer or oversteer… normally it is understeer I find”
Lauda: “The feeling to me is that you cannot fight this car. You have to be gentle. Otherwise…”
Watson: “Yes, at this point, possibly so…But to go quickly… You have to throw the car around… It is like driving a go-kart.. because of the subtle movement of the car…there is no feel in the car. It is just a reaction and the car needs to have the throttle on. There is very little movement. Most of the movement comes from the tyres. Most of the suspension is in the tyres”

I also much enjoy those insiders look (to see how a driver works with Engineering on car optimisation) which you rarely get to see unfortunately.... A true gem for me but no idea for his watch brand/model (sorry).

Lauda complaining about a modern F1 car being too peaky!!!
He loved balanced cars and driving them smoothly and here he had to fight and twist the chassis to extract the last tenths...
