I've been following your channel for a long time, and also I've been following HMD's progress on the market (I used Nokia 3, 5, and 6.1). After a great experience with a Xiaomi device I recently switched back to Nokia, this time G21. I really hope HMD succeeds and carves itself a piece of smartphone market since I love their approach to making smartphones!

I also have the Nokia G21! My old Nokia 8.1 got damaged with too much water, my favorite phone! I bought the G21 as a cheap replacement, and it works pretty well! I would not pay more than $400 with a phone which lacks a 4K camera like the Nokia 8.1 had. Maybe Nokia can come back with something in 2024? I cannot see anything that's more worth it's price than the G21 coming from Nokia so far. I paid $180 for it, which isn't bad at all, in my opinion.

Thanks for the video and review, very helpful. It sounds like many of the challenges are due to Android one vs the phone. I think of Android one as being the crippled version but maybe that isn't right.

HMD is still in the works, there is still room for improvement in several aspects, the Nokia X30 is a good device, but the high price keeps away many buyers who find better options at a lower price, HMD needs to launch a more premium intermediary, with more aggressive specifications, and to solve their logistics problem, which is very precarious, HMD needs to deliver more in its launches, stereo speakers for example, just the Nokia name and focus on sustainability will not increase sales. A hit on the X30 was the size of the screen which is very comfortable in the hands.
HMD needs to focus on a model and deliver the best specs and improve their logistics, a faster availability for sales.

Yeah I don't know what Nokia is doing with the pricing. It's a tough sell even at 30k but 50 is where no one in their right mind would consider this device. Especially since you can get an iPhone for the same price in sales.

Nokia deserves to die. Who do hmd think they are with those prices? It's good that the market decides the fate of products and not the so-called 'trust' of Nokia. This phone does not deserve even a single unit sold

Today, I sent my X30 for service. I was having issues with the loudspeaker - the volume was fading away after a while but was "reset" after pausing the app.
I suppose the service crew will just switch out the loudspeaker for a new one. I guess that'll fix that issue.
And then there's the difference in colors between 60hz and 90hz refresh rates.
    It's so annoying!
The best thing about the X30 imo is the battery. Maybe that speaks for itself. :P

Ive had the X30 for about 3 months, i'm pretty pleased with it all round. There is one issue however, after update 00WW_1_310 SP01 charging is limited to about 8.5 W, instead of the maximum 33 W. Personally i didn't experience any overheating issues while charging the phone prior to the latest build so i'm not sure why Nokia has done this. The slower charging doesn't bother me in the slightest as i always top up during the evening, but it would be nice if Nokia acknowledged why they seem to have changed the specification of the the phone now. Excellent video as usual. 👍

After 2 months, my Nokia X30 fell out of my bike mount (forgot to lock it in), and the LCD panel under the glass became damaged.
The damage started in the lower left side near the corner, and spread across the whole panel until it was fully black, so now it's unusable.
It was in a TPU case when it was dropped, and the phone itself looks completely unharmed, and there's a subtle scuff on the TPU case.
Just bad luck maybe, but now I'm back to my Nokia 8, which has been dropped numerous times, and still hanging in there.
Since the Nokia X30 is not sold in my country officially, there is no warranty, and I can't even send it in to get repaired.
I'm stuck going to a third-party phone repair shop.
Aside from that, I did like the X30 very much.

I traded in an iPhone 11 for a pixel 7 and instantly regretted it, it was awful! So I looked to see what I could trade the pixel in for without much to pay. I had to 'settle' for the Nokia X30.
All I can say is wow! It is super stable and slick to use. I'd say the user experience is as close to an iPhone as I've experienced on any android device. No glitches or irritations encountered (unlike the multitude of bugs and glitches on the pixel!)
I'm super stoked to have found the X30 by chance and would recommend it to anyone. Definitely punches above its price tag.
Camera and speaker dislikes may be valid if they matter to you. For me they are non-issues.

I really wanted to use the X30 as my daily driver . The deal breaker for me was the lack of VoLTE. It’s absolutely horrible these days when telcos switched to VoLTE on their networks and your phone doesn’t support it. What you get is frequent disconnections, you can’t access data while on a call and so forth.. with the recent upgrade to Android 13, and it being stock android, I just love it. It’s the closest thing you can get to a Pixel UI in markets where Pixels are not supported. Regarding the camera, I have no issues..

I don't own a X30 but must say, face unlocking performance on 8.3 5g has also improved leaps and bounds. I believe some software update has enhanced its performance. Initially I thought why would someone need the feature, when unlocking by fingerprint is good until you realize living in a cold place when you have your gloves on. Face unlock is a saviour. It works good for 9 out of 10 times. Only problem I have had is when I am in a dark room. You need to take the phone too close to your face or have the phones brightness increased. On paper the X30 seems like the ideal device. And it’s definitely not a bad one at all, especially with the upgrades you mentioned (higher refresh rate, upgraded camera app, enhanced battery life and software performance) in your review. But coming from an 8.3, 5G, should I chose to upgrade this unfortunately wouldn’t be my choice.
There are a few too many compromises that are deal breakers for me, as it seems that Nokia is trying to follow similar trends in its midrange category as other OEMs do in theirs or more specifically, their flagship class. No phone jack, no microSD card slot. Even if you let’s say don’t make use of those features frequently or at all, the choice should still be there in case they ever become needed. The battery is smaller, and yes I do understand that it makes up for it by being more efficient than its larger counterparts in terms of power consumption…but at this point, except those few upgrades you highlighted, the 8.3 5G has all those features missing on the X30…including the fact that they are both still using Android 12, which in the case of the 8.3 5G, would be the last OS/software it would be getting (even though the device should and could be able to handle Android 13 given that it had 8GB of RAM). Also, and this maybe nitpicking, but I am disappointed that on a midranger like the X30, Nokia’s collaboration with (Carl) Zeiss is noticeably absent. Right now, and I’m only saying this if you own an 8.3 5G, the X30 doesn’t look like an upgrade, it is more of a side step instead of a step forward.
The only viable alternative for a kind of an upgrade would be the G60. While it lacks in certain areas and would rightly be considered a downgrade in some aspects, no doubt, it retains a lot of the features and specs I wish had been incorporated on the X30. Hopefully there’s a follow up device to the XR21…XR31 (?) that will address these issues. Now THAT would be a smartphone to keep an eye out for!

I went from the 8.3 to the X30 and I do not regret it. From my personal perspective I've found the X30 to be much faster, much better battery life (although I'd had my 8.3 for 2 years so that could be part of it) I wasn't too impressed to lose the micro SD slot or headphone jack, but I bought the 256GB 8GB ram to cover that. I prefer Bluetooth headphones but I used a wired connection for singing as the wired ones work better for that.
The camera has been better on the X30, the speaker is much better, and as much as I miss the 8.3 size for being able to reassuringly feel it in my pocket, the size makes it much easier to use - especially when using the camera.
The 8.3 was a stunning looking phone, but I never really loved the phone. I had the Nokia 8 before it which was just so much faster and smoother than the 8.3, and it felt like a dip in quality to me. The X30 actually does seem like an upgrade and I'm very happy with it. I did also consider the G60, which certainly does seem priced better for the spec, but I honestly have no regrets at all.

I think the move to letters and numbers from numbers caused a bit of confusion. Technically, the 8.3 was on a higher calibre than the X30. If they would release a successor to it, it would be an X40/50. but I also prefer using the X30 over the 8.3 mainly due to the size and display. G60 would still be a good option in terms of speed, and keeping the 3.5mm jack, but cameras and in hand feel, its a big step back from the 8.3

The X30 makes me conflicted: they did most things right compared to previous models with a relatively compact size and weight, practical materials, OLED display, IP67 rating, Victus glass, OIS, a capable camera sensor, 33W charging... but something seems missing. Certainly the choice of chipset, while perfectly capable, seems more out of place against the rest of the specs, but I think it comes down to the design which lacks the subtle warmth and more human appeal of something like the X20 or 8.3.
Considering there have been updates to the camera interface and features I am at least hopeful they may at least temper the excesses of the HDR on the X30, but maybe it is just an ISOCELL issue (looking at photos taken with the S23 Ultra I am starting to suspect the latter).

I didn't buy X30 because our Finnish 🇫🇮 tech reviewers weren't too happy. They didn't like it's daytime photos. Night time photos were great, but that's not important to me as I almost never take night photos. Snapdragon 695 at this price point is a letdown, it should have been Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. A good AMOLED screen but 6,4" is too small for my big hands, I prefer a minimum 6,6" these days. SD card slot should have been added too. I wonder why it must be left out on all phones in 2023 except the budget priced models (even Samsung took it away from A54, all earlier 50 series models always had it. X30 main 50 mp camera has so much potential since it's Samsung's flagship sensor - same as on Galaxy S22 and S22+. So I guess it's a software problem that HMD maybe could fix sometime in the future.

As a Nokia 6.2 user I can share that the photo quality was disappointing for at least 1 to 1.5 years after purchase (especially noise issues), but then they updated their camera app and things were greatly improved. Moreover, things were good at all times with an unofficial gCam build. So they definitely have a habit of messing up the image processing, but it's a software thing that did get improved significantly in my experience.

I don't imagine the X30 would be one of their hot sellers but I want you to think about it this way: Not every phone needs to focus on the exact same ingredients because actual consumers outside of the tech community aren't interested in benchmarks and speed tests.
They want a phone that works reliably, is quick, can capture good pictures in every situation, looks and feels good in the hand, has a nice display, and gets updated for a long period of time. The X30 does all of these things quite well. The only disappointing aspect is the speaker which really should be much better at this price point.
Keep in mind, I'm not saying I'm happy with the direction the brand is going. But its not like competitors are doing much better outside of ticking checklists, and every phone comes with its own set of compromises of course.
