I just started my first DIY paint job around couple weeks ago and was spraying “scared”. That lead me to waste money and time because I had to re-do the whole thing over again. I wish I would have seen this video before I started painting. Thank you.
This dude answered every question, like explained 10 things that I never knew, but you have to really hear what he's saying. I had to rewatch 5 times to totally get what he's saying. The wet clear bed at the sides, to prevent halo, makes so much sense.
Well done my man...before I give my thoughts...let me just say first and foremost( for everyone else)in the world of auto body we’re held to certain parameters such as insurance non payment for necessary items,it’s a customer self-pay, the boss doesn’t get it,mostly monetary....but the way I like to do a lot of these repairs is to just straight up zone paint the side....and I’m sure you would agree...it gives a much nicer result...it sucks that painters who actually care like us can’t always dictate how we paint a car...but w a color like this you still managed to make an invisible transition and beautiful paint job.... everyone take note of this and follow through w what he’s saying...he is no imposter...and genuinely wants to help...nice job dude
Thanks so much and yes so many times I’ll take one for the team and just go down the whole side. Just makes things much easier. I know I can blend this color so I had confidence but you hit the nail on the head with this comment.
There are so many poor tutorials out there with bad results passed off as a great job. Brian, this the one stop shop for the right info on how to do the job properly. #1 by far.
I also appreciate you sharing your knowledge, a lot! I'm restoring a 74 Alfa GTV and using a midnight green pearl. I am by no means an expert and had one section I wasn't happy with and needed to blend that uhO into the rest of the car. The details you included as well as what to use (the clear base, etc) saved my fanny and I now have my best paint yet. Many thanks!
Hey beautiful job! Painter here for 8 years, in the trade for 10 from NJ. I've never used basecoat colorless but you really want to make me try. We have it in our system (Standox solvent) I've just never used it because I'm so used to just blending without it, yes silvers too but that blend edge can work it's way down the panel lol. My blends are pretty solid but for some reason it never clicked to me that it would be so much easier to blend into a wet bed. I'll give it a shot, seems really logical to put it on in between coats also to obtain a wet bed blending surface each time. also and maybe more importantly I just wanted to say thanks for the videos. I've recently felt a bit unenthusiastic about painting and the grind but I've been watching youtube videos of painters and watching others do what I do, most of which the same, but something reignited in me. It helped me find the passion for this trade again. Watching videos in this trade is actually like working at a new shop for a moment. You pick up on things like you would if say you switched the shop at which you work at and its extremely valuable! Thanks for the passion re-ignition
"This is what works for me. If there's a way that you do it, leave a comment below so I can learn from you". Wow, what a humble guy! I love your channel and have learned a lot. Thank you:)
Man I really appreciate your videos, I am getting ready to paint my first vehicle in a few short weeks and I've been watching your videos for advice and expertise and I've gotta tell ya my confidence is growing every day as I watch you go in detail about what to do and what to avoid and how to correct mistakes. Thank you! Keep the videos coming!
I am professional painter but watching your videos ,I love people that helping people , you are one of them , thanks for all that effort and time . Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
I just subbed yesterday and watched your blending videos. You have the best ones out there! Thanks for spending the time to read and answer questions. I’ll post another comment on my questions.
I’m glad I found this Chanel. I started doing small repairs and this channel helped me a lot.not need to go to a class room when you found peoples like this.just great 👍
The most important thing I have learned so far is to be in charge, thanks Brian I have really done this since watching your tutorials thanks as always, yourchannel honestly is great
Hello Brian this might be a duplicate comment, but if it is, you deserve it twice anyways. Obviously your work is fantastic, but you are an absolutely wonderful teacher. I mean that’s why I said, everything I have done my entire life including build my business from the ground up and feed a family of six with it, I have done self taught. The hardest of all those things is change. Your videos have taken me from $3500 car work to work acceptable on a $20,000 car. Thank you so much
Can I suggest that during your edit you state what is in the gun? You did this in the prior video, it really helps especially since you cut in with the next shot with something else in the gun. Like at 12:00 you are doing clear base, but then at 12:11 you go to base coat. If someone didn’t understand the process you could only kinda tell by looking at the cup. I could see someone thinking you’re laying down clear base in that area. This is all new technique for most of us.
@@PaintSociety I was gonna mention this too lol. I had to rewind the video a couple times in some parts cause it threw me off , so then I had to look at your cups and then it when it made sense as I saw the clear base and then a darker cup with basecoat.
Have watched a few of your videos now Brian and I've got to say your tutorial breakdown is awesomely explained and shown in each and every video you post.
I've been with Brian via video school now for 6 months. My neighbor works for a body shop and he said I'm showing him impossible blends, I told him I watch these videos of Brian
Just painted my dodge 3500 bright silver a few weeks ago, then had a tire come apart and right up the side of the door and got part of the fender as well, I was wondering how to address this, and this video pretty much answered all the questions I had on how to get the paint to blend and how to use a blending agent. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
4:37 is exactly what happen to me when I painted a bumper cover with a metallic! The metallic flakes were sitting in the some of the 600grit sand scratches on the bumper. Thank you for the tip to use a 800 grit before painting 🙌🏽🤙🏽
Hobby Painter myself in Germany I like how you explained things and compared to women. With black it is too easy to blend. Silver is way more complicated. Fear is always man´s biggest enemy... Thanks a lot :)
You are a beast sir, that blend is awesome. I have a blend coming up in a few days chevy blue granite metallic I'm gonna try this method love the way you spray. Thanks for the tips.
Brian you make it look so easy and after your help I’ve found it is easy the one most valuable lesson I’ve gotten is don’t rush it! Thank you guys so mush you have Taught me many lessons and made me a much much better painter
Brian, I think some people don't understand about clear base blender is that not all basecoat systems have the clear blender. So in that case, I heard guys using basecoat binder which also sprays clear to achieve the same effect. Great job as always.
Works the same way I hear. Even if it the blender doesn’t come in through system they can still get away with using one from another system. Thanks for for commenting on the video with great advice!
thanks brian i have never done any cars ive done mower this year im going to see a 02 blazer extreme and ive learned from you by watching your videos so when im done ill post it im just trying to mix paints.
Beautiful video man, tomorrow i have silver toyota coming in and I am empowerd by watching this video and has mademe confident to face metallic silver. Thank you so much!! People like you make life easy to live.
Thanks for the tutorial. Using your blending technique from another video I got an amazing result. But instead of using base coat blender I used the normal clear coat and a slow reducer while spraying in a garage with 42 degree Celsius temperature outside. Many thanks for sharing the knowledge.
The car looks fantastic. I'm trying correct a clear coat problem on the hood of my car. I think I may have to use 3000 wet and hopefully that will hide the border of the old and new. Thanks again. Cheers, Chris.
I want to thank you that clear base is what I was always missing the wording was what I couldn't understand with other videos this video really summed up what I was doing wrong thank you again
Hi Brian , thanks for all the great videos !! Have learned a lot from you. I’m a DIYer and working to fix some body damage to a silver metallic car, so this one hit home. Man … blending that paint without the proper equipment is tough, even if the paint is a decent match spray cans just can’t spray it very smoothly. 2nd attempt will be with a spray gun. I won’t be able to buy that sun gun though (very expensive), and I can see how that would be super useful . I couldn’t tell how bad the paint transition was until I was out in the sun !
I was like you once ,this was happening to me. at the end of my work day my eyes felt like they had dirt in them even with safety glasses. it took a long time to get use to my full face respirator helmet . like your work, good videos
I am going to paint my silver cts after a t bone repair and i know i never could have even tried to do this without your help. Thanks for these video's
I have been working on cars for 24 years. Teaching myself and listening to paint for about 20. You have a passion for this and I admire that. Very few have that. These paint shops and insurance paint shops cut corners at every turn. I just started redoing a paint job that was poorly done on a car I bought about 8 months ago. As I am sanding it I easily got through the paint. Looks like they put a very thin layer of primer on. Maybe 1 coat. Pathetic. So sick of these assholes who want all this money and do a crappy job. They think that fake smile is what we are really buying. I have not taken my car in for repair in 20 years and will not. The last time I did was to get electrical work done 17 years ago. When "I" went under a few years later I noticed they had crimped other wires that go to the ECM. So they corroded and I ended up having to replace them. This was a Good Year shop to. Just goes to show you they put the big name on to trick you into thinking they are better then the gas station mom and pop places. But they are not.
My Accord is going into the insurance bodyshop next week.. Its Albaster silver.. With a carpark dent and scuff to my wing. I just hope to God they do a good a job as you do and I get it back all matching and not mismatched.. I love the car and if it comes back poorly done I will be gutted to say the least.. My car had hardly a mark on it before some old lady bumped it with her 2020 BMW convertible.. At least she gave me her details for the insurance.. Great work by the way. 😎👍👏
Yo PS, I know its a old video but you explain everything so well. Been following all your videos and was able to get the knowledge to knock out a silver paint job. Your videos and teaching given the confidence to do an RV next. Thank you for the knowledge transfer. Have a pleasant day. Cheers.
I've found with metallic colors, if you look closely you can see the droplet size and how much they flow together. This translates to your air pressure and how wet/ dry you spray. Metallic colors that seem to dance in the light as you walk around are usually sprayed with large droplets that sit independently instead of flowing into a sheet. I try to replicate what I see on the car. Also the intercoat for your pearls (well reduced) makes a descent wet bed for blending. You also want to make sure you don't have issues with your door handles matching. Sometimes I use the features of the vehicle to help with the transition of color. That's a complecated idea to try to explain here though. I like how well you break down the lessons here. I wish this channel was around when I was getting started.
@@PaintSociety I can't say it's really a good idea to spray metallic dry or you're going to get a Halo. I like to spray with an iwata lph400 or lph80. If I can get away with using it the light weight of the lph80 makes spraying a piece of cake.
@@PaintSociety that's what I like about what you're doing. The only people who really get good at this actually love it and soak up as much knowledge as possible. This is a great way to share it with like minded people.
A blend to me is a optical illusion.I never liked using a blending clear because I felt that it was just another substrate to break down long term wise.Sometimes my blends turned out great but some times they would show maybe the paint didn’t match had good bad I thought it looked beforehand. I have always felt more confident using a slower reducer doing blends and allowing proper flash times. The other guys in the shop thought it was stupid (they would turn the heat up in the booth and get the fastest thinner in the shop on blends.I tried their way and didn’t like it the paint was almost dry coming out of the gun) I have also liked getting the new parts covered as close as possible before hanging on the vehicle and doing a blend.Keep up the good work and positive attitude.
Hey Brian repairs to a metallic bonnet would you do 1 full coat of clear base coat then let it flash off. Then apply base coat blender to blend areas before each coat of base coat? Regards Gary (Australia)
Awesome video.. love the anti-static gun part lol. Ur blends are on point! Even for a painter with over 20yrs experience I still enjoy ur videos. Thanks for sharing
negative is a new word for loser,,,i always try to be positive,,,but im positive when i make a mistake, no one can beat it,im positive of it,,,,but putting all of that behind me ,the internet is a learning network for me,,,ive been playing around cars most of my life, i am self train, but since i have been watching your videos ,damm my paint jobs are starting to exstight me,,,i have learned a few things from you ,and i havent watched all your videos yet,,and im still learning from ya,,,yes keep the videos comeing,,,,,short cuts no, doing it the right way is always the way, and the right way im getting it from you, thank you,,,,,thank you for shareing your wisedom. i believe even alittle bet of knowledge can go along way....i know because your helping me alot
Would you do the same if you had repaired a truck bed above the wheel well and blend the whole side of the bed or blend it into the door ? This paint is also an older 96 Chevy silver metallic. Also I’m doing this all USC Spray Max products. Again thanks. Steve
So you are a good painter, that's super obvious, but you also have a major gift when it comes to teaching and presentation! Super blessed gift - not many have it. I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. I'm just getting into painting and its super uncomfortable for me. feel like i'll learn a lot from you
Brian love your content on blending silver I've always dreaded silver or any light Metallic to do a blend . I have one coming in that is silver and it's a blend .
I amazingly admire and respect your courageous, determined, humble, fun excellent work, and am sure your coworkers do the same as well, thank you sir🎩✌❤
Awesome video, thank you for taking time and explaining every little step your doing, especially with the clear base that was used for blending because I had heard that method before but wasnt confident about doing it the way it was quickly explained. Now i feel like I can do it. You couldnt be more right about having confidence that you can do it, i was scared to do my first paint job on hood of my "new to me 2016 audi a6" the rest of it is in pristine condition. Thanks to your videos i was able to base and clear my hood. Didnt come out like your paint jobs but i am very happy for my 1st time and with some wet sanding and compound to get rid of orange peel its gonna look really good for a beginner. Your videos are the best on here.
Great video Brian. Great explanation on the clear base. You do a great job! Love watching your videos. Keep them coming. Again thanks for taking the time to teach us.
Great channel. Very Informatine. Question. On this video it looked like after blowing the dust off with the fan, you first spraying the entire area with the blender and only then, with the 2nd coat spraying the narrowed area?
Nice!! I'm assuming much the same for a Metallic gold? I have a Mercedes 1983 with some clear coat issues on the hood. The fenders on this design are flat on the top and drop off at approx 90 degrees down the side where there's a pin strip. Would you think I can blend to that drop off point or hold back further? The fender paint is in good shape. Great channel! Thank you John.
You painters are artists. Nicely done. I have done some rust cutout and bondo repair on vehicles with metalic paint and I used matching spray can (I know it's not as good as using a gun) paint to paint the patch. I never seem to get the same gloss depth. Where does the reflective property come from, the base coat smoothness or the top clear coat?
I've been having real problems with getting metallic silver looking right. I think clear base is what I need. I think I got a nice substrate ready for metallic, but no turns out looking real bad. Seems like I got imperfections in the primer layer or deeper. Despite trying my best on the prep. So far they've all been cars I don't care about but soon I will be doing some rust repairs on a car I do care abot and it has to look good!
Painted wing.. from looking at door along wing and looking at it straight on....looks great.. but looking back from front of car towards door. The painted wing looks darker.. any ideas how to fix . Is it a blend into the door?..
Nice video. What do I do if the luster of the new clear is more shiny vs the existing factory clear. I thought about polishing the rest to match. It would seem im a better painter than the factory. Anyways, thank for this video as it helped me blend but now I need to blend the clear?
Beautiful, every blend job you have done is just amazing, great video, thanks again , and as always with these videos i am always learning, so glad i found your channel

You’re right! When using faster the paint is just about dry before it hits the panel. Makes no sense at all! Thanks for your positive comment !
Hey Brian repairs to a metallic bonnet would you do 1 full coat of clear base coat then let it flash off. Then apply base coat blender to blend areas before each coat of base coat?
Regards
Gary (Australia)

Cant thank u enough for all your videos! So much knowledge.
I'm just getting into painting and its super uncomfortable for me. feel like i'll learn a lot from you
Thank you so much !!!
So do we have to tack rag at all? Seems like you never tack rag idk?
Excellent explanation of blending process 👍
Awesome job great explaining on the coverage of it all ...Thank you .
Brian love your content on blending silver I've always dreaded silver or any light Metallic to do a blend . I have one coming in that is silver and it's a blend .
Hope you use this video to help!

Y’all going to have something nice to wake up to!
Paint Society sorry Brian.it was 14.52 in the UK. 👌
best paint channel... period!!
Welcome Dave!
Thanks for teaching me I’m getting better on my cars now , keep up with the good job
Where does the reflective property come from, the base coat smoothness or the top clear coat?
thanks great show it would be nice if you could show on a drip test or tell us paint, thinner ratio s
I love your videos. Great help. Please explain the third coat which you refer to as a half coat. Is this half clear base and half base silver mixed?
Painted wing.. from looking at door along wing and looking at it straight on....looks great.. but looking back from front of car towards door. The painted wing looks darker.. any ideas how to fix . Is it a blend into the door?..
Thanks for all these advices!! Especially on metallic Colours. I’ve been improving on my paint jobs . Thanks once again. 🤓👍
For less-than-perfect DIY rattlecan jobs, can we just use regular clear coat as the 'clear base'???
Nice video. What do I do if the luster of the new clear is more shiny vs the existing factory clear. I thought about polishing the rest to match. It would seem im a better painter than the factory. Anyways, thank for this video as it helped me blend but now I need to blend the clear?
Would you have blended the whole rear quarter panel if you were only doing a repair on the lower half of the back door?
Thanks so much for trying to simplify things and for transferring knowledge with ease. I'm looking forward to the new video
Really great, I have part of a BMW motorbike fairing to paint.. so great guidance
You are doing a very cool job worth watching and applying
What's your thought on with the front door having 2 more coats of clear than the front fender it will have a different look.
Beautiful, every blend job you have done is just amazing, great video, thanks again , and as always with these videos i am always learning, so glad i found your channel
Glad you are here!
Thank Brian for your help as well i will be buying a Eastwood Concourse pro 2 gun kit
Have a great week end .
this is your most informative video
If you’re doing a bumper ding, would you base and clear the entire bumper?
Very much helped out & thank you for explaining the clear base for me better, tried to understand but now I do, thank you so much again & keep up the awesome work brother! Amazing job with the videos🙌🏼
Kurtis I’m glad the video helped you!
