This is the first house in this series that has kept to a tight building schedule and come in under budget. It was designed by a homeowner who's a savvy architect with extensive commercial real estate design experience. Add in a wife who, even though it's a new experience for her, keeps everything running smoothly and is respectful to the people she interacts with and this episode is a breath of fresh air. (Some episodes have homeowners who are so contentious and obnoxious that it makes the episodes uncomfortable to watch.)
Most of the homes on this series are bogged down by too many change orders, huge cost overruns and arrogant or inept homeowners who butt heads with their architects and project managers. The builds take twice as long as they were supposed to. Add in suppliers who aren't keeping to schedules and annoyed laborers who are fed up with the owners and it's a miracle that any of the homes have actually been finished with designs that end up working.

This is by far my absolute favorite episode. The young couple never appeared to be stressed. I wonder if that had anything to do with the workers willing to do favors for them. Quite honestly, I can only imagine that level of competence and also confidence could be perceived by others as an enviable trait. They truly believed in themselves and didn’t 2nd guess their decisions.
The house is stunning. They deserve to win an award not only for their design but also they delivered on time.

I hope they have lots of beautiful children to anchor them into the space, make it a HOME, and grow memories for the next generation.

One of the best projects I have seen on this show. very nice design and a pleasure to watch a couple work together and get it done on time and budget instead of the usual nitwits one see fumbling around on this program

the areas rugs are not to scale, and the carpet in the bedrooms were not installed properly (not pulled tight so it isn't laying flat). Congrats to them on being able to acquire the side lot. Once they finished the landscaping, adding a safety rail for the front balcony, etc. and other finishing details, it will be a hugely successful project.

Almost twenty years on now. I wonder what it looks like and if they’re still there. It’s quite a place. I admire them for pulling it off at such a young age and for being so audacious in the best sense.

My wife and I design well together. When she has an idea and I don't like it, and when I have an idea and she doesn't like it, all it means is that we have to search more to find the third option. Avoids fights all the time!

Can’t imagine what this house is worth now if they built this thing for 350k. It’s got to be easily a million now, maybe more like 1.2.

I agree with you, that much concrete should be finded. But the organization and managing it like they did is admirable. Yet, IT IS a waste of space. You could build a comfortable home for a lot of people instead of only two. And that is a shame.

There's NO WAY. Maybe 350k for the excavation, even back in 2005. This episode screams BS.

    Its lovely yes,
They young and what an achievement,
But just for the two of them its rather huge,i think it was a dream which turned into an achievement,
Hope she has domestic help to clean,
On the up side if they battled financially they could sell and make a good profit or turn it into a B&B they have two dinning rooms and sitting rooms.
    Good luck.

pity about the environmental expense, which I imagine sits differently now. That's the problem with the grand modernist designs -- they have to be left in the 20th c.

They put the last window into the house yesterday it said. Didn’t notice that? They didn’t even have their real furniture in the house yet. They put a few pieces in to film the episode.
