It's been a long process, but he built his family home all while sticking to his budget. It's admirable, and I hope his family gets to enjoy it it for a long, long time.

    I like it. As he said, he's working class, so a $12000 church drops in your lap!!!!!! Please, that alone is a miracle! His in swerving faith was richly rewarded and that his wife stood behind him made it all the more glorious! Congrats Sir and well done. And I bet the valuation is gonna be much much more than 120,0000

    The dome could be a greenhouse for the family to grow herbs and other vegetables year-round. - interesting they chose to wall off the dining room instead of using a case opening to allow the light into the middle of the building, etc. The kids rooms turned out really well. Master bedroom is very spacious, as is their bathroom, so much respect for what they were able to accomplish.

    To me the best way to convert these buildings into homes is to keep them as original as possible and carve out open floor plans for everything. Let it be a church, that a family lives in, not a home that looks like it was once were a church lived.

    I just don't understand why people would vandalize such beautiful stain glassed windows. The kids (most likely not adults) who did it were never taught to respect other's property.
    There's no way I'd cover over that beautiful balcony front with cinderblock. I'd incorporate it in the design of the house. A wall could have been built behind it instead of in front of it.

    What a snob McCloud is!!! Week-on-week I have watched him champion 'posh' developers rip the heart out of ancient buildings AND this inspiring self-taught Renaissance Man kept most of it or concealed historic features for later generations!And there's the 'rub, he is a working class man who took on every job and showed the superfluity of having most architects as builders know more!!! Good luck to them: they have a better house than McCloud himself!!!

    • @nix123ism
      @nix123ism Год назад +6

      Yes, I know what you are saying, have watched most episodes of grand designs and he seems to always advise people to employ architects, site managers, quantity surveyors etc and blames all cost,time overruns on the fact they didn't. So what if Kevin doesn't like the pool, it's easily removed and converted into a formal dining by future owners, the builder wanted a pool for his son for a good reason and that's what's important. I think this guy deserves an award for what he has done, he has converted a historic church into a great house for his family, managed to do it for a pittance and I think it really is a great achievement. Hell, anyone can build a house if they have loads of $ and pay experts to design,cost, build a mansion ..... There aren't many problems that can't be solved with $. Hats off to this man and his wife, it's a pity Kevin seems to love other church conversions done with the help of "experts" that end up costing 10x what this job cost but he can't seem to grasp the realities of most people's finances and looks down on projects not completed by so-called experts.....

    This is a remarkable preservation / conversion result. It's done with passion and careful thought. Every interior space is spacious, beautiful, and very livable. It was a unique building to begin with and the builder has not only saved but improved on its uniqueness. (McCloud. on the other hand, comes across throughout as a condescending prat. Periodically he waltzes to offer discouragement and facile "advice". I hope this family was paid tp participate in the show,)

    45:30 She says it was worth it but apparently they had separated even before the last visit from Kevin and she divorced him just after that. I disagree with some of the design choices he made, but the amount of dedication, hard work and also some great spaces should have deserved a better ending. He spent 2 years working without a break, had 2 heart attack, and after completion she just moved on.

    I dunno but am not a fan of this grand design. I mean no windows looking outside, it is tad dark, the pool is inconvenient and the low ceilings. There are a ton of ways to preserve the charactestic of this old church without the feeling of you are actually living in a church. I like the big bed rooms upstairs though and the outside.. If it was me, I would've taken advantage of the double height ceilings and that in the kitchen made it open plan with access to the outside garden so that light floods in the middle..

  • @trudyanderson5289

    Kevin McCloud is a prat-- he represents the architectural prescriptive "should" and therefore is firmly entrenched in the past and lacks imagination.
    Frank Lloyd Wright and all truly great architects broke rules and boundaries. That's what made them great. Kevin's idea that a white-collar classically trained architect would have done a better job is pure class snobbery. A working class guy achieved what Kevin never could even dream of, let alone do. Kudos to the family for keeping their own vision and for their fantastic achievement. Maybe some of the features don't tally with what Kevin finds 'proper' architecture-- but it was built for FUNCTION and on an incredibly tight budget. Kevin comes off as a whining child, while the family, particularly the builder father, come off as patient, and ultimately realistic builders. Congratulations to them for their fortitude, and following their own dream.
