My brother in law just sent me this link and those were my words exactly...the quickest 11 minutes ever...Todd Moen you're the best!!!! I like to make fishing videos...yours are of the quality that everyone should strive for!!!
First off, I just want to say thank you. I am deployed right now and will be away from home for 7 months. Your videos are providing me a great deal of comfort and retreat. Very well done. The best fishing videos on the web.
Todd can't imagine the hours of hard work that go into these films but they definitely touch on the feelings and emotions of every hardcore steelhead fishermen, especially OP fishermen! This place and these fish are for sure the reasons many of us grind it out every week at work so we can spend our free time doing what you so vividly show in your films. Having Jack bowing to the fish gods at one point in this video shows how much even he feels when he loses one of these fish, this is a guy who hooks a lot of fish and guides year round and still feels that hollow emptiness when his line goes slack. Thanks so much for making this video, now I have another video fix to watch when I'm trapped at home waiting to get out for a weekend fishing adventure! Trevor...Trevor Covich likes this!!! The legend lives on!! Trevor you and Ben leave a few for us working stiffs will ya, and tell Mike to get back to work!
So many great videos but this might be my favorite! I can't help but watching it over and over. Really captures the essence of Winter Steelheading. The scenery, the music and the grizzled steelhead junkie. Once again Todd nails it!
Thanks Michael. Really appreciate the comments. It's just not easy being out there, but it sure looks like fun. Putting a camera in your hand... well thats another story!
I so enjoy all your videos....so informative and truly interesting....only wish they were longer. You put so much into your site. Thank you for always keeping us up on the latest!!! Keep up the great work guys!!!
Awesome video as always! I always look forward to watching your stuff, it's always beautifully shot and really showcases some neat fishing. Can't wait for more! -Liam
Hey Todd, cathmag! Year after year every winter where i live, in argentina your videos inspire me to the core. The equipments, fisheries, videoshots, and the beautifull music make me dream on!! Totally thanks!!
I have a little tip for anyone out there in the winter (or early spring if you live in the really cold states as I do) - activate a couple hand warmers and put them in a small heavy duty ziplock bag. When your guides get too frozen to move the line and your leader gets encased in ice, wrap the hand warmers around the ice. Keeps the ice off pretty well, and you have an excuse to warm your hands in the progress. If you use really light tippet keep the hand warmers moving on the line so you don't melt through.
Hi from New Zealand Todd. Great video and bright back wonderful memories for me of fishing the peninsula in a drift boat ably guided by "The Great Gus Garcia" from Seattle. Oh. how I wish I could do again!
I watch this video atleast 3 times a day, Well done... Love that reaction when his line goes slack and then he says "dude you tell me what I should have done" priceless ;)
Within the context of River Fishing for Steelhead you're absolutely Correct. Hopfully the Fish takes the Fly on the Swing and pretty much hooks itself when it turns. If one keeps their hooks sharp and checks them frequently a Steelhead on the Swing pretty much Hooks itself. This is not Trout Fishing with Dries or Nymphs and a 5 weight Rod. However, if it's very Cold Water conditions and the Fish takes at the end of the swing when the fly is Hanging Straight Down Stream you're kind of screwed. A hookup in that situation is a Crapshoot at Best. The author does mention Stinger Hooks for hang down Fish which is probably one's Best Chance. For Saltwater Flyfishing for Bones and Tarpon the Rod is pointed directly at the Fish while stripping. If the Fish takes the last thing one should do is attempt to set the hook by lifting or sweeping the Rod. It's called a Strip Set with you're Line Hand as I'm sure you're aware. Once the Strip Set has been accomplished there's certainly no harm in driving the hook home with the Rod - sweeping to the side. Especially with a Tarpon and provided they stop long enough to give you that opportunity.
A very nice film of the true life at the river ! I'm agree whit fly must swing above the bottom not on the bottom! And I'm fish micro tubeflies or ed hooks they tend to hook the fish much better! There points are bit outgoing and they digging in different way. I'm use those on float line and from intermediate to sink 3 my goal is present those whit speed . You might try those treble hooks ED that calls from England and I'm use Partridge 4-2# hooks for big salmon in low water in Sweden Norway. I'm enjoying your work nice and good performance sad for lose those fish ! Best regards Bjorn from Sweden 🇸🇪
Thank you so much for publicing another awesome video that shows the essence of flyfishing, it is really great to do but also requires a lot of commitment especially in winter. I also like those voice overs it seems easy to do but I know it isn't.
Aart Hennekes Thanks for the great comments Aart! You are right about taking time and commitment during winter. Winter run fish are tough... that's an understatement!
You have Scotland why? What I would give to throw mid and long belly spey lines with light tackle to Atlantics, and I live in the heart of steelhead country
Todd, you sir are a master at your craft! well done AGAIN! i could watch your films for hours (well unless i am out fishing myself) Heading down state from my home here in Bend to work the coastal rivers next weekend :) ~Darrin
Outstanding as always...I've noted that on a number of your videos that I like the music...but am not familiar with the artists...anyway to tap into who they are so I can find/purchase their music? Thanks
Awesome video! I keep coming back to this one. Been fishing the OP hard for the last several months (and in years previously - when it hasn’t been closed). Which river is this? Asking for a friend ;) - cheers
Great stuff. I wish we had steelhead over here in the UK. It just looks so good. I'll have to get over there and have a crack at them. I think If I lived in the USA I'd definitely be a Steelhead fisherman! Them rivers you are fishing just look amazing. Keep up the great videos. I'm trying my best over here too!
And I wish we had Atlantic salmon and sea trout man, you guys invented this we merely adopted it for our rivers, and you guys get to fish mid and long belly lines which is the ultimate treat
Awesome video Todd, you know the fishing was tough when a Todd Moen film doesn't show a fish or a take until 6:45! I recently caught my first steelhead and got my buddy on his first! this was in Ohio though and the production quality isn't up to your standards but the videos are up on my other channel Life Outdoors if you want to compare fish! keep it up love all of your stuff!
Thanks Jacob! Yeah, it took a few trips to the Olympic Peninsula and hours and hours of work to capture the shots in thisvideo. It was HARD word and I really appreciate that you appreciate this type of work. Chasing steelhead in the rainforest with camera gear isn't easy. Thanks so much for watching sharing with friends!!! I'll check out your channel today!
CatchMagazine anytime! Thanks so much for taking a look, recently got a new camera so I'm trying to up the quality and editing. My friends and I actually did a road trip on the west coast last summer (also on RUclips) and Olympic was one of our favorite stops we hiked the Hoh river trail out and back in 2 days so I understand the area you were shooting in somewhat. Hope the new year brings you the explosion your channel deserves!
Well, it's fishing, and when it comes to steelhead, you get few hook ups and even fewer landed fish! It's just part and parcel of the game! It a way its much like Deer hunting, when you have been looking for that old buck you been seeing all summer and come the season, you hunt hard and long and you might get a shot! Been there on both! It cost you both in time and effort and most of the time you are cold and wet to boot! But there is nothing like a fresh steelhead on the end of your line!
Hi Tony! The conditions were all over the board. Only thing that was consistent was the rain!!!! Thanks for watching as always! Appreciate the continued support!
Im new to spey steehead, fishing is pretty new in general. Can you explain why he is fishing where he is at 2:35? Is it because they are holding before the rapid water there? Love everything about this video, just subscribed, keep'em coming!!!
So this section is what most would consider textbook swinging water, slightly faster than walking pace about waist deep and very little current seams, this means when he casts, all he has to do is aim slight upstream from quartering and make maybe one mend and now that fly can make a big long presentation over as many fish as possible
Steelhead are not everyone's cup of tea, for there are so many hours and days without a strike, let alone bringing one to the hand. Still, that moment when your rod is nearly wrenched from your hand, that moment when adrenaline is pumped into your system and the heart rate goes through the roof, it is one of the great rushes in fishing. And it is that moment, that makes it all the hours and days worth while.
LOST FISH AT 9:10 >>>> Your rod tip / top 2/3rd's oscillates - flexes too much so much so that it induces a slack - taught - slack - taught series of oscillations thus allowing the fish who is head shaking / rolling to get loose ..... Rods like this need a high angle of attack pointing above about 50+ degrees to keep the osculations to a minimum ....I only know this but loosing a LOT of fish ans then adjusting accordingly......cheers
Amazing video! So much emotion in your shots.and production - this coming from a fellow photographer/fly fisherman. Question: what is your favorite glove for fishing in the winter and why? Thanks!
Great video as always, I l appreciate your work. Really enjoyed the angler and his perspective on fishing. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to use a proper tailing glove to prevent slime loss. As I said though, great portrayal of one of my favourite places on the planet to swing a fly or just sit on the beach .
Before the steelhead runs were wiped out by the dams I use to catch them on one cast into a good looking hole , and that is how steelhead use to bite when there were a lot more of them they were very aggressive !!! In the 60's to mid 70's !!
Many times you do everything right and the fish still comes off. I think one must apply some "Occam's Razor" principles, and just say to yourself if was random bad hook placement...
Another amazing video but one question, if the narrator was the same guy tying the fly, why was he tying a dumbbell eye fly when he said he despises them so much, just a curiosity. LOL
dude both fish took felt tension and came straight at him. He says ""He came right at me again''. He wasn't trout setting he was lifting to negate slack on the barbless ... thats Jack Mitchell, who has lived in the Pacific Northwest his entire life and has been guiding and chasing steelhead for most of his years.... If you know about steelhead with two handed rods you should know this. The guy lives off steelhead fishing its like a person on youtube telling a pro hockey player how to shoot
Where's the challenge if the gears so heavy duty you can horse them Upstream. In Ontario we use 6 lb test with 3-pound leads and still get 15 pound steelhead in. That way at least they have a Fighting Chance
Come on Todd stop pointing your level rod at the fish. You're killing me bro lol. At least that's what I've learned the best way to lose a fish is to point a level rod to the fish. Great video as always man!
Rob you're right; it rains all the time on the OP, especially during the winter steelhead season. I live in Seattle so I have the misfortune of having to go there a lot. I don't recommend the place to anyone, and especially not during the season; bonefish, sounds like a great idea. ;-)
That was fantastic. Wonderful production. Quickest eleven mins of video I've watched in sometime. Very enjoyable, thank you Todd. ATB.
My brother in law just sent me this link and those were my words exactly...the quickest 11 minutes ever...Todd Moen you're the best!!!! I like to make fishing videos...yours are of the quality that everyone should strive for!!!

10:18 OH YA! That's what it's all about, and to actually capture it on film...Amazing! Great job Todd!
That fish flashing before the hook set around 10:20 was fire
Dang good catch Jacob! I didn't notice!
I 100% believe u need confidence to fish I see to many ppl give up without even trying. Tight lines and beautiful video.

Enjoying your videos so much. The sceneries are awesome. And the fishing is spectacular
Hey Todd, cathmag! Year after year every winter where i live, in argentina your videos inspire me to the core. The equipments, fisheries, videoshots, and the beautifull music make me dream on!! Totally thanks!!

Im from the peninsula. So spiritual there. My dad fished bogachiel Dungeness elwha steelhead was a easy catch then. Still love fishing there
Well done sir. Beautiful videography, music, and content. Thank you
'Lost that lovin' feeling'. I often sing the same song when swinging flies. LOL.
Congratulations! Another masterpiece in fishing-videos! SALUT!

The angler sounds like Jack Mitchell...some great fishing tips! Yep, confidence in your equipment and fly are huge contributors to fishing success.
Just fished this river today. I could spend a lifetime there. Obsessed!
Barefoot Jake Hikes Olympic Awesome Jake. How was it?
Amazing! Cold and not as wet, as in this video. Today would be another story. It's blown out for sure!
A very nice film of the true life at the river ! I'm agree whit fly must swing above the bottom not on the bottom! And I'm fish micro tubeflies or ed hooks they tend to hook the fish much better! Great, great video. Can you tell me the song/artist at about 10:20. Thanks

Esther Frasher Hi Esther! Thanks for watching. Very cool you fly fish for steelhead!
Awesome video! I keep coming back to this one. Been fishing the OP hard for the last several months (and in years previously - when it hasn’t been closed). Which river is this? Asking for a friend ;)

I'm new to this channel and I already love the content. You can't get this from any other channel. Thanks.
Great video as always ! Why doesn't he set the hook ? Could be part of the problem. I dont know ?
Beautifully done!
Beautiful cinematography. but you do need to tighten those loops and increase line speed.
Great stuff. I wish we had steelhead over here in the UK. It just looks so good. I'll have to get over there and have a crack at them. Awesome video .... Thanks !!!Can you just tell me who is the singer of the song "Say Goodbye " from 10:00 to the end ?
Great video! Please, what is the name and model of this bright orange line used in this video?
Tallys Dias Thanks for watching! That's a Scientific Angler brand line.
great video! it looks amazing there :D
Jack is the first guy i,v seen not striking hard into a fish.He does it the way we use over here for Atlantic Salmon, just letting the fish tighten up.
You can't trout strike with a spey rod, you will lose 90 percent of your fish
The scenery is worth watching this video. Seeing Gods hands in everything.
Thank you!
Awesome video Todd, you know the fishing was tough when a Todd Moen film doesn't show a fish or a take until 6:45! that's a real world! sometimes fish doesn't bite for many hours or even days
great great great!!! 10 .... whats that song say god bye?? cant find...
Good stuff.
Less drag, more backing and a good chase help me loose less fish in those long fast runs.
Great vid Todd! As usual :-)
Thanks for the continued support! Really appreciate it! Please get some of your friends to subscribe!!! Have a great day buddy.
great videos man I appreciate your hard work
Arkadiusz Sykula Thanks Arkadiusz! I appreciate that you appreciate the hard work factor... it really is HARD work.
I was out there in 1988 love the country fishing looks great too!
Well, it's fishing, and when it comes to steelhead, you get few hook ups and even fewer landed fish! It's just part and parcel of the game! Awesome Todd Happy new year dude"" River looks Pretty High and rapid Northwest pacific warmer ?? or. looks melted cheers best wishes Tc uk
Hi Tony! The conditions were all over the board. Only thing that was consistent was the rain!!!! Thanks for watching as always! Appreciate the continued support!
aaahhaaa I guess its real Random ..UK Hit right now Cold and Gales High Tides Due too at this time of year My plessure always Love the footage dude
Given it's such a big river why so long between strikes? Are there very few fish in the river or are they just not feeding?
Steelhead are insanely hard to catch. So many different topics on why, but one reason is not too many are still around.
didnt set the hook it seemed like on both those fish. :D
It's a tough call to make. Do ya wait for the fish to grab and set itself or lift as soon as you feel the take...
Im new to spey steehead, fishing is pretty new in general. Can you explain why he is fishing where he is at 2:35? Is it because they are holding before the rapid water there? Love everything about this video, just subscribed, keep'em coming!!!

Jack your awesome
Lol'ed so hard. I call those "freight trains" 😂😂😂😂
Steelhead are not everyone's cup of tea, for there are so many hours and days without a strike, let alone bringing one to the hand. Hey dude. Whats the name of the song which played in 10:20?
LOST FISH AT 9:10 >>>> Your rod tip / top 2/3rd's oscillates - flexes too much so much so that it induces a slack - taught - slack - taught series of oscillations thus allowing the fish who is head shaking / rolling to get loose ..... Amazing video! So much emotion in your shots.and production - this coming from a fellow photographer/fly fisherman. Question: what is your favorite glove for fishing in the winter and why? Thanks!
For me fingerless and 100 percent wool are the only two important factors. Lots of guys up here like the glacier gloves though
I hear the calling. I feel their fear. Here I come fishies. I can’t wait it’s my first destination. Gonna go it alone at first.
Love the video great as always What's the name of the song at the end
Splendid as always!
What drone are you using here? It seemed partly a bit blurry.
cheers Tom
5 people are idiots. Another great one Todd, perfect way to unwind after a long night shift at the hospital.
Awsome video!
Great video as always, I l appreciate your work. Really enjoyed the angler and his perspective on fishing. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to use a proper tailing glove to prevent slime loss. I've grown up with the stories of pre I 5 Washington state, it truly was special
What Music is??muy bien video
Dude your videos.. 🤙🔥🤯
What materials are those used in the tying of that fly?
Ostrich herl Rhea Marabou, big long fibers that breathe well
Many times you do everything right and the fish still comes off. I think one must apply some "Occam's Razor" principles, and just say to yourself if was random bad hook placement...
Ryley Fee Hi Ryley! You are right... bad luck is part of it! Ya never know...
Nice video Todd
Trevor Covich Trevor! Hey Hey... thanks for watching and hope all is well out on the water... take care out there and Happy New Year!
Todd, this video is very good!!!!
Great stuff
Thank you for watching!
👍👏🎣🐟🛶🤝 Thx!
What is that cast called can use that in albama small rivers
spey
Another amazing video but one question, if the narrator was the same guy tying the fly, why was he tying a dumbbell eye fly when he said he despises them so much, just a curiosity. LOL
Tie a mustard saltwater circle hook. No more lost fish.
Nice clip
Awesome release...others should watch how it's done properly..cheers
Great channel
Thanks Rick!
When the fish takes the fly and takes line, sweep the rod low and to the bank, not up in the air. You'll lose less and land more fish.
dude both fish took felt tension and came straight at him. He says ""He came right at me again''. He wasn't trout setting he was lifting to negate slack on the barbless ... thats Jack Mitchell, who has lived in the Pacific Northwest his entire life and has been guiding and chasing steelhead for most of his years.... Varios queremos saber como se llama el tema del final del video, q-leao!
Buen video, cabezas de termo.
Saludos.
Where's the challenge if the gears so heavy duty you can horse them Upstream. In Ontario we use 6 lb test with 3-pound leads and still get 15 pound steelhead in. That way at least they have a Fighting Chance
i just went fishing today and ran similar gear but not as heavy duty but i agree
Come on Todd stop pointing your level rod at the fish. You're killing me bro lol. At least that's what I've learned the best way to lose a fish is to point a level rod to the fish. Great video as always man!
also no bend in the rod either
Thank you for watching!
Great flies, great spey casting but don't bother it's horrible. 40 F raining all day long. Go take 2 weeks and bonefish in the warm weather.
Rob you're right; it rains all the time on the OP, especially during the winter steelhead season. I live in Seattle so I have the misfortune of having to go there a lot. I don't recommend the place to anyone, and especially not during the season; bonefish, sounds like a great idea. ;-)
winging that spey line. whopper rod.
hunkin gigantic rainbow trout.
