  • So this is my wifes 1946 Ford 2N tractor that she bought for $250. We where told that it was originally equipped with a street sweeper attachment for the state. We made a will it start video on this tractor a year ago and it has been our most popular video so far with 1,000,000 views as of now. With the upgrades we do in this video it should work much better for us on the farm.

It definitely matters when installing a hoop that you do it in a star pattern. Otherwise, the torque will be unevenly distributed, which will lead to distortion of the surfaces, plus the hoops won't seat properly. The information is in service manuals.

@@PlasmaStorm73-N5EVV a car is not a tractor. there is a weight diference, and a tractor is pulling equipment, while a car is extremely light, has a smaller axel, goes faster, and the tires wear out faster, so it won't matter too much.

Working across the face of the component is always the best practice for install. For removal, it doesn't make a difference for wheels, in particular. If it was a valve cover, intake or cylinder head, yes, Id be looking to a removal pattern. In this application, for wheels, Ralphie is right, it doesn't matter,

Great job, i think you should be ok with 10-15 psi. In those rears though, the tractor will have a much smoother ride than if you run 25-30 psi in them and may actually get a bit more traction. Its kind of a catch putting new rubber on old tractors as you often spend more than the equipment is worth on the tires/rims/tubes. But at least you don't have a tractor payment and you still got a good little workhorse to use on your property. You can get/fabricate many useful attachments for that three point and these little fords seem to be tough as nails and last a long time with little maintenance. Regards from Western IL, Zach B.

  • @mountainfarmer8766
    @mountainfarmer8766 2 года назад +17

16 psi is plenty for a small tractor tire. Higher air pressure just tears up the ground. And yes they are called self clearing because they push the mud to the side to get down to fresh earth. If you run them backwards it piles the mud under tire. Great content!

Dad is always right Ralphie... always.
P.S. If you want to add weight back into the new tubes/tires, you can use RV anti-freeze instead of the more expensive options. It can usually be found cheap at the end of winter (I got some recently for $2 gallon at Menards). It also provides some rust protection too. I've had it in one of my old Cub Cadet garden tractors for over 30 years.
P.S.S. You can use talcum powder on the tube/tire to help the tube slip in and align easier.

RV antifreeze works great. You can mix it about 30% with water and it will be good. You can buy a fitting to go from a water hose to the tube on Amazon or eBay. I used a barrel and sump pump to fill the ones on mine.

I don’t know if it would work the same, but on a bicycle tube you put a little bit of air in the tube just to give it some shape before installing second side of the tire.
    Helps avoid pinching the tube.

Doing wheelies is something you want to avoid on a tractor :) We welded a large piece of angle iron and some thick plate steel to the nose of our old John Deere A and then chained and bolted a steel nail keg barrel to the nose and filled it with plate steel, sand and even some oil to weigh it down good as it's very hilly here. Even then I often found myself riding on the nose of the tractor sitting astraddle of the radiator cap with my feet in that barrel for my extra weight when we'd be baling hay on these hills and still occasionally felt the front end leave the ground. I sure don't miss changing out those big tires though and beating the wheels off and then back onto the cogged axles but, when it's gotta be done it's gotta be done. We used to use two sledges as well, but on the same wheel, one hitting the back side the other matching blows on the front side of the wheel. Clearance might be an issue on yours for doing that though. If you can patch up those old tubes they make fun sleds on the hills in the winter time, or for floating around on in the lake. I sure do like how much easier it looks like Ford made changing the tires out as opposed to the old JD's :) It's funny you mentioned the model A engines as folks used to build their own tractors in WWII out of old Ford model A's. Some day if you can, I'd suggest getting a corded Kobalt impact gun. I have yet to run across a nut one of those can't break loose! We used to fill our tractor tubes with what we called "brine" instead of air for the added weight. It was some sort of solution that wouldn't freeze in the Winter, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was in it...but it wasn't actual brine, lol. I put a small drop of it on my tongue once and it set my tongue to burning like crazy, LOL! Good job on that soap! We never thought of that back in the day. Then again, it was always us kids changing tires and no one really ever did show us how, we were just told to do it. Live and learn :)

    SAFETY - SAFETY - SAFETY:
I don't know if anyone has pointed it out but this tractor has a "non-live PTO". I have decades of experience with them. a non-live PTO means that the output shaft (PTO) is directly connected through the transmission to the engine. What does that mean ? It means that if you are using an implement such as a Bush Hog, which has the capacity to store enormous energy in the rotating mower blades, you may encounter (as i did "only once") a situation where you are mowing and come to the end of a field then apply your brakes to stop at a fence line. Thing is, when you apply the clutch, then the brake, the stored energy in the bush hog will continue to rotate the transmission and engine and you have "no control". I had mine push me completely through the fence before the bush hog blades finally stalled. The answer ? There are two (but really only one). There is a PTO release lever just below the seat on the right side, however in most cases when there is a load on the PTO shaft the release won't work. #2, Go to Tractor Supply and ask for an "over-running PTO clutch". This mechanism #1 is not expensive, and #2 allows any torque in excess of the PTO shaft to simply free-wheel ... end of problem and keeps your family safe.

What's important is that you remove the top lug nut last... I always tighten diagonally and incrementally just because it's the sad nerdy way to do it... But let's face it, you're not going to get wheel vibration on a tractor... So, Ralphie, in this instance it doesn't matter... (Listen to your dad, though, and humour him. It's the easiest way)...

Most restored tractors just sit around looking pretty. I think you should leave it as-is and use it! The water in the casings is salt water, to keep it from freezing.... thats why the hoops rotted out, the bladders must have been leaking to cause all that rot. You might end up with a dead spot in your grass where you drained the brine out.

But you should keep your eye out for an 8N to have for a restoration project and keep your 2N for the dirty work, and keep your eye out for 3PTH implements they can do anything with the right implement! And you couldn’t be more right Jesus Christ does save and people need to hear that! Good for you young man for having the courage to tell the folks watching what is important 👍

yes it does matter with going criss cross when torquing WHEELS.... Tightening the lug nuts in a criss-cross fashion makes sure that every side of wheel face is evenly stuck to the wheel hub throughout the process of tightening. This reduces the likelihood of things shifting and flexing, which means that the nuts will stay tight even after you torque them. I do have to say, I love your channel but the whole "hoops" and "casings" just drives me nuts which I'm sure that's why you do it lol.

Just an idea... Find a local machine shop with a media blaster (sand blaster). Pop in with a couple of pizza's one night and say hello. I think that they would be more than willing to run things like those rusty wheel plates through. I worked in a machine shop and used to run cast iron pans through when they were rusty. They had a huge "Blaster" that would clean an old pan to new cast iron in a pass or two. In your case a couple coats of rust resistant primer will keep them from further damage. Love your channel, lucky kids. Give Granny a special scratch, she is a looker...

It doesn't matter what pattern you tighten or loosen the bolts. Since it's not a cylinder head, apart of the transmission, or engine that can crack or Warp if not tightened evenly. Especially when they're made of steel, and you're using sledgehammers to knock them off.

Be careful, popping wheels may be fun, tell you flip the tractor, farm accidents do happen. Put some weight in front of the tractor . Personally I had one death and one with a brain injury from farm accidents.

Were made by Ford then when war broke out they contracted it out to a small company and I can't remember now due to old age. Only the ones that had money to buy extra luxuries had them mostly. Only have seen two FOMOCO ones and 3 to 5 after market ones. Want to say that catalog company is the ones that got the contract for the aftermarket parts. Used to be able to get anything from the catalog then it trimmed down to the car and truck market. Something Whitney. LMK sorry the memory isn't what it was.

Henry gouged for ever dollar he could as he paid the most for his employees, gave them housing, and made sure every child went to school. The long and short is that if he had not stood up for the working man, how long would it of been before a eight hour day came? A dollar a hour till trained at chevrolet and then ten cents a hour more when they considered you trained...highest paid were getting a dollar sixty five and you worked ten to twelve hour days where at ford, you had a eight hour day and if they asked you to work longer, time and a half... you started at five an got more as time went by... Saturdays were always time an a half so ford was not all that bad.... makes for some excellent reading material. now AS for loosening or tightening nuts or bolts... its absolutely important, I personally didn't think it was so important till no warning, the supervisor fired me on the spot! I have watched different good mechanics an they all demand the same

I've only seen roofs like that on Ford tractors used by State D.O.T. road crews. Not sure if it is O.E.M. or aftermarket.

Need pattern to where it'll push mud out and keep clean tire for traction. Other direction it'll fill with mud and just be slick. Just try pulling something on wet ground in forward then in reverse and you will see the difference.

The love of family, working together getting things done. This is what has been lost in this day and time. The children cannot wait to get as far away from their parents as they can as soon as they can .why!! Because their parents want to be the child's friends, not parents. Or they just don't have time for the children, They need their me time.

Maybe you should inflate the tube somewhat before inserting it inside the tire, it would be easier and prevent it from being pinched between the tire and the rim. Oops, sorry, hoops and casings...

I busted a lot of tractor tires when I worked for a Goodyear truck tire center. Order only really matters when installing them. When removing them it don’t matter.
