  • Hidden Side Of Luxury - This investigation reveals that behind the glamorous exterior, all that glitters is not gold.
    Hidden Side Of Luxury (2018)
    Director: Zoe de Bussierre
    Genre: Documentary
    Country: France
    Language: English
    Synopsis:
With their beautiful shopfronts and finely crafted goods, brands like Gucci, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton and Prada are seen as being the height of luxury, conjuring images of master craftsmen finely crafting each item. But - as this investigation reveals - behind the glamorous exterior, all that glitters is not gold.
In the world of luxury goods, leather means record-breaking profits. For brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, over 70% of their profits comes from leather goods. But where does this luxurious leather come from? Most of the raw material is tanned in a small region in Tuscany, where the heavy, difficult work is subcontracted out to immigrants. Temperatures in the factories can reach 45єC and the workers - many on short term contracts - are often exploited and mistreated. We hear from workers who were seriously injured at work and then attacked for daring to complain.
Then there’s fur, the other iconic luxury material. Nowadays, most fur comes from China, where 70 million animals are killed for their skins every year. Here animals have no rights or protection and conditions in the farms are atrocious. We managed to access one of these farms and what we found was a world away from the luxurious image the brands promote.
Animal suffering, deplorable hygiene conditions…discoveries to make your blood boil. From Haute-Couture at Paris Fashion Week to Chinese and Italian backroom boutiques, we investigate the hidden side of luxury.

The sad part is, this kind of crap isn't new. It's just that a lot of people have turned a blind eye. The Mariana Islands (Saipan) were doing similar kinds of things with employees in horrid conditions, making products for HUGE brands back in the 90's/early 2000s. We need to quit this narrative that bad working conditions only exist where shoddy items or counterfeits are made. Money speaks and some people have zero moral compass in how they treat others to make it.

I'd never buy anything from the "luxury goods" market and avoid where possible to buy anything made in China. There's a reason why they are so rich whilst the people who work in the supply chain are just one step away from severe poverty or death.
I can't stand the greed and cruelty so many are happy to dish out all for money.

But we still need to wear something. I came to conclusion that we are left with a very few ethical options - small local designers or thrift shopping.

A plastic bag is just the same as a bag that costs a mint! Will any of them make you happier for real no, if anything the plastic bag would actually be better & make you happier as you can laugh at the person who actually needs materialistic things to give them a quick fix which will leave them only "wanting more" which actually is the definition of a poor person!!

I used to work for a business/factory (in America) that made seats from both fabrics and leather. They use a huge amount of leather. I was always so shocked at how much, many amounts of cow hides a day (from different countries) and every now and then would have orders for camel hides. Because of the industry they were made for, also had chemicals for fire resistance. It can be a harmful environment to breathe in these chemicals and if you have allergies to them, it’s more difficult. Every country has business owners who need the job done and will take advantage of others. The one who owned the place I worked for was Christian and placed that as a label their business is associated with. Would give to the community and earn recognition for that with plaques on the walls and a Christian flag flying out front while they mistreated their employees by not paying well and demanding too many hours of work per week. Also very short amounts of break times. Not to mention the mentality of negative mental treatment that was unhealthy. They didn’t mind being discriminating and unfair. They stripped away your dignity in a heartbeat. Expected you to be fine with all this or go somewhere else. Yep. True.

Great and important documentary. So when will Alfonso Guerra be prosecuted? That needs to happen, maybe you can help. He needs to be in jail for so many things, especially for beating the 2 Senegalese men. All the worker abuse is terrible. I lived in Senegal for 2 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Overall the Senegalese people were so kind and great. However, at the time they also practiced female circumcision. (It's been abolished but still happens). It's mostly a muslim country and many men have 3 wives and 10-20 children. (although that's a bit different in the cities). Another issue is the desperation for money (especially when you have so many children). That predicament puts the Senegalese working in these unfortunate conditions in a vulnerable situation. If the Senegalese in this documentary weren't so desperate for money they may not be putting themselves in that situation. I've also lived and worked in China - it's pretty horrific in many ways. So sad how they are treating those poor animals. Obviously, these tanneries should - ideally - be abolished or at least be changed and offer fair working conditions for all. These products are far from necessary. Fur coats should be outlawed at this point. A cotton or non-animal made bag/purse/coat will do just fine. 🙂

Sadly it all revolves around money, profit & greed from the top down - the minion at the bottom of the heap tries to scrape a living, paid a pittance for their labour - heart breaking. As a side note - rabbit a soft fragile fur is the cheapest known material in the fur trade, the fact that Max Mara associates itself with such a cheap fur speaks volumes about the brand, cheap nasty & low quality. Of course the price it charges for the finished article defies gravity. Max Mara once had the reputation of quality in craftsmanship design, & product and now it's no better than a fast fashion brand except for the fact that it occupies more expensive real estate in shopping precincts.
Laughable statement from the saleswoman about the 'cheap' quality rabbit - Saga for those interested is a Scandinavian mink brand & one of 2 countries that farm mink the other is EMBA in the USA. There are probably farms in China as well.
Luxury is in the eye of the beholder and lucrative profit margin of the brand conglomerate. The Chinese consumer market with its infatuation with conspicuous display of status keeps these luxury brands flourishing.Little do consumers realize that the Emperor has no clothes.

Consumerism and the rate of modern business advertisements have lured us into falling prey to all the million brands of products. Neuromarketing has taken centre stage so much that now it's all over the internet and kids games as adverts to push it into our mind that it is a do or die must have item. We are doomed if we don't cut down our appetite for competition.

How can it be a 300 million dollar a year industry if a single tannery district is generating 1.1 billion? I think they messed up in the beginning with how big the global luxury brand market is.

This is so sickening! And to think fashion industry is fed to us all and especially kids is barbaric. Real values are not on the outside of a person, so why bother encouraging this industry by buying their products/leather…..???

luxury ain't for everybody and there's a price to everything, even if you choose to never own any of these, life is just unfair you just gotta understand it's survival for the fittest.

You have the ability to comment here. Humans can speak for themselves. Animals cannot do either. If we made handbags, shoes, etc from humans, you bet you'd be protesting over it, and it would only be heard because you have the privilege of language. If I'm wicked, then I'm perfectly happy for for you to call me so. Delighted, actually.

Why would anyone think luxury goods producers would provide safe working conditions? I refuse to buy anything from LVHM GROUP.
For one thing their products are gauche overpriced and garbage. I had Gucci in high school. I went for far superior brands mades of quality after school. Gucci was and still is cheap and they purposely allow their brand to be licensed by off brand manufacturers.

It makes me rage deeply how they treat innocent, helpless animals and workers. Employees can escape at least when they realise. The poor animals are stuck! Ugly people wear big brands! I seriously shake my head in disgust when I see ladies who vlog on RUclips it revolting Chanel, Vuitton, Balenziaga, Dior and all other high end bs! How and why would anyone pay big bucks for such hugely ugly stuff. Worse still ugly stuff that has been made on the suffering of innocents! 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬
