    I think showing your mistakes and how you learn from them and progress from that point is incredibly valuable and takes some guts in the "stormy sea" of the internet. Props to you James for your honesty and showing everything here in such clear and deliberate steps. Water bases aren't easy, but you adapted and pushed through, and I'm sure the next one you do will be so much better for what you learned along the way. Thanks for a great video and lovely build.

    Nice save in the end! And nice diorama. When you showed your blackish ocean, I figured you could've pretended it was oil from a nearby stricken vehicle or vessel... ;)

    I think you got a really good result in the end. Its only in really calm water in this part of the world that you can see through to the bottom. There is a guy on YT called Laser Creations who does a lot of diorama's and mixes resin by the bucket load but he only uses the very minimum of tints in the resin. It almost looks clear when he is pouring it.

    You did a great job saving this. I think I would have boxed the edges in with some balsa and just forgotten about everything under the surface, since the surface was already opaque. Its important to realize that the color of water comes from light interacting with its depth. This means it has to be an additive result of all the layers you intend to use - you cant just pour a dark layer on top if the sides will be visible. Lessons learned though, and I'm sure your next water dio will be ace. Thanks for sharing - I've always admired both your talent and your honesty with your audience. Cheers.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 месяца назад

      Thanks Vorpal. I would have loved to do something different to the base but I was under a bit of a time restriction, the show was upcoming and it needed to be posted with enough time to negate any post issues ! I thought about wood, I thought about cutting it to a thinner depth too.
      The additive depth thing wasn't something I considered. The coast here is very similar to normandy, and on top it's green grey, and under if you open your eyes it's murky green, and to my mind that was what I needed to do without thinking of the how's and whys behind things. It was a bit short sighted of me in retrospect. I'll have to bear these in mind for next time thankyou !

    Love the seaweed. Top tip for earth and small rocks - Go to your back garden, field or park. Crush it up and strain it through a tea strainer. Another source or materials is your pet shop. You’ll find chinchilla dust and aquarium gravel are very cheap and will have lots of uses on dioramas.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 месяца назад

    At 25:49 you used AK Water Gel Effects instead of AK Water foam (not the same thing). Water gel effects are used to imitate wave shapes and dry to a transparent finish while the Water foam remains white. Anyways I think you did an amazing job with water👌

    In my experience, top layer is clear to give water depth. Maybe a light tint best. I've painted the base with sponge and 5 colors if the river bed is seen and solid when not. Mainly water color is in second layer.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 месяца назад

      I was trying to replicate what you see in reality, sadly it doesn't work too good for model water due to the depth limitations

    • @contracostaexpert
      @contracostaexpert 2 месяца назад

      @lpjmodels I would advise trying as I think you'd be surprised. In one case, we were modeling a large area representing 50 to 100 ft of water depth but only had 1 inch of actual depth to fill with color and clear. We tested half a dozen methods and simply sponge painting the base with 1 light tint, and then clear was enough to create the effect in an important iconic structure.
      Even the better modelers on RUclips nail the textures but not the depth of water. I swear no one looks at large bodies of water. Real water, no matter what color, cleanliness, or depth, is always clear to 1 or 2 feet. The color comes from below in sediments or river bottom.
