Hi Everyone! Yes, an ingredient in Olaplex No. 3 (butylphenyl methylpropional, a.k.a. lilial) is getting banned in the EU because of its potential effects on reproductive health. Lilial is a compound found in chamomile essential oil and a synthetic version is used to give products (ex. perfumes, laundry detergents, etc.) a particular floral fragrance. This ingredient has been “flagged” for removal from products for over two years, and the deadline to eliminate this ingredient was in early 2022 (which is why it’s now coming to the forefront of beauty news). Note, the ban is based on animal studies in which this ingredient was FED in high amounts to rats. Drawing conclusions about the effects on human health from these types of studies is problematic, because it does not reflect how the ingredient is used in the real world (topically, on the hair of humans). Importantly, there’s no evidence that this ingredient has ever negatively impacted reproductive health in humans. Ultimately, this is an extremely precautionary ban. Although I was initially taken aback by the Olaplex headlines, I felt reassured after looking through the data myself. Regardless, if it makes you nervous to use products with lilial, certainly avoid them.
thank you for diving into this! These kind of detailed, research-based explanations are why I follow your channel so closely. :) Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Not sure if you have ever tried one of those hybrid between a dryer and a brush. It's basically a round brush blowing air (cold to hot), it dries and style at the same time, I love it! I only just use it on 90% dry hair, in 5 mins it gives me super smooth, voluminous hair. Got it from Amazon for like 30 quids. No damage, no need for heat protectant since I use it almost cold and still works. I believe this works if your hair is naturally straight or slightly wavy.
My gosh, you are freaking gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your routine. I, too, have a similar routine; however, I have head hair that behaves like....bikini hair, so I have to straighten before I curl. ;) Love your routine!
Thank you, I needed this! Dr Ellis, I would love if you could do a video on your 2nd and 3rd day maintenance, do you restyle your hair again? Love the videos as always 💜💜
@@DrSamEllis Could you also share please what you ask your stylist for at the salon in terms of your colour? Is it balayage or carefully done highlights? It's gorgeous either way!
Hello Dr. Sam, how should a extreme curly hair be detangled while wet. I have a lot of hair and it is very curly, using my fingers to detangle it wont work. Any suggestions?
Hummm.. what about tone neutralizing products? Do you ever use them on your blond hair, Dr.? I have bleached hair and struggle to find good and well formulated products to neutralize yellow tones... So, if you have any input on that woul very much appreciate to hear it 😊 thank you.
try purchasing and using a silk cap. they are supposed to reduce the "friction" of the hair against the pillow. And/or satin pillow case. Both would be good. Pillow case will help reduce morning face wrinkles. LOL
You can try using Living Proof "Perfect hair day dry shampoo" the first night of day 1 (it'll soak in as younsleep), and/or before a work out. It will prolong your style :)
I’ve always been curious about Olaplaex. I’m suffering hair loss and I have thin hair. Will the olaplaex line be too heavy for me? Some people said it made their hair fall out
New subscriber here 🤍 love your content! I do also use a bigger (1.5) iron curler to achieve a faux blowout- so fast and easy! I add in Verb’s texture spray for a little extra oomph since my hair is thinning. You look radiant, btw ✨ Can’t wait for more of your content! Wondering about your take on “fungal acne”. Many derms say this is the incorrect term but I used some of the recs of Simple Skincare Science and was able to get rid of those little forehead bumps. Now just trying to figure out the best moisturizer for me. I currently purchase theirs- a Urea base one but really don’t like to have to depend on ordering on line, I like products I can just pick up at a store.
I get them if I use something to occlusive..for me I can't use cerave and also mineral oil, squalane, caprylic trygliceride as comes from coconut oilI get those bumps...,so it could be an ingredient you cause use or if fringe a hairstyle product, some deems recommended something like noxeral shampoo where these bumps are...Dr dray has some content in this also
I went to salon they recommended oplapex she sold me no2 instead of no3 messed up my hair ? I’ve been trying get my hair back healthy I even used no8 hair mask .. I’m concerned to use no3 now ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks
🥰 Dr Sam!! And all I do is just apply hair moisturizer and let it air dry after Ive done my face care routine …. Of corse after combing it. I usually condition my hair every day and like once a week shampoo it… seems to work well for me. Sounds easy but man, curls are hard to maintain!! Pfff girl!! Having hyperhidrosis I can’t put things in my hair and work out or like do my skin care routine and work out, no no no… that’s disaster waiting to happen.
Would you say you have curly or straight hair I ask because I am wondering if my hair would behave like yours if it was king. I would love to see another hair video but the next time showing us different ways you wear your hair throughout the week
Not sure if any of this will be of benefit to you, you may already know these tips. As I have extremely hard water I sympathise completely. The advise I have received from hairdressers, dermatologists and chemists is - most importantly make sure your hair care has zero sulfates (shampoo, conditioner etc) and ensure your hair care doesn't "build up" on the hair strands (your salon should be able to advise you on that, alternatively professional stores/websites have great products at much better prices than standard retailers generally) and lastly, you can obtain a reasonably priced shower head with built in water filter that greatly helps reduce the water hardness as you shower.
Your hair is fantastic. You are fantastic. But I have a question: if you are using silicone base products, does olaplex 3 absorbs into the hair shaft? I think silicone forms a layer a protection, is a barrier and does not let any other product to absorb unless it is not washed with sls....
That’s a good question! Silicone is not completely impermeable so it shouldn’t be a problem. Now of course I wouldn’t put on a fresh coat of hair oil and then use Olaplex, but otherwise it hasn’t seemed to be an issue!
I just started using minoxidil every night. I used to wash my hair only twice a week, but with the minoxidil I find that doesn't work. How often should I be washing now? Daily? Please help a girl out. Thanks.
would you be able to recommend other heat protectant products that are not for blonde hair but darker like black please? If so, that would be greatly appreciated (:
Do you have any tips for how to go longer between washes for people that have dandruff or scalp psoriasis? For now at least I am stuck using dandruff shampoo at least every two days or my scalp psoriasis flares up, but that leaves my hair extra dry and it gets oily faster which just feeds the problem.
Hey ! I love your videos. I’m just curious since olaplex says to wash ur hair lightly before applying no 3, why don’t you do it before ? Is there a reason ? ☺️
Do you have any suggestions for people that get really bad eczema on the back of the scalp? I've been dealing with this for years where it can get so itchy and sometimes bleed. I can't use any fragrance shampoos and have noticed my hair becoming weaker :(
Hi, you may like to see an allergy specialist to find out if your eczema is an allergic reaction. It could even be your scalp reacting to washing detergent in your bed linen/pillow case. Avoid wearing your hair in a pony tail where your eczema is inflamed. I know they're not as fun because they're fragrance free, though hair and skin care products formulated for people with eczema have truly been game changers for me
Honestly, just dry shampoo and minimizing touching your hair. I usually wear my hair down for a couple days and then do some type of up-do once it starts getting oily. We unfortunately can’t train our scalps to produce less oil.
Have you tried Olaplex’s #0 liquid to prime the #3 treatment? Curious about your experience & if it’s necessary. 😊 This video was so thorough, focused, & fun! Great job & thank you so much!!
I saw zero difference or improvement between using number 0 vs plain water. I finished one whole bottle and decided it was a waste of money. Love the rest of line though.
So Doc. Sam, your natural hair texture is bleached/damaged, and wavy then or is it more straight with bends because of the cowlicks? This is the one thing that is confusing me about my haircare journey: the difference between truly straight caucasian hair and wavy types and the products to use for specific concerns. What is your hair porosity?
Hi Dr. Ellis! I’m wondering your thoughts on dimethicones in hair products and parabens in skin products? PS I’m starting medical school in the fall and am also curious about your medical journey! Thanks for being such a reliable source of information; I’m so glad you’re on the internet!
She posted on her IG stories a reel explaining this from labmuffinbeautyscience. I'd definitely check it out. Also it's now being formulated without the ingredient as it was only there for fragrance. If it's a major concern, check the ingredient list for the ingredient (butylphenyl methylpropional aka lilial) but new productions of it won't have the ingredient
Thank you for this video. Also, isnt your baby only a few weeks old? How do you find the time to be on RUclips and Instagram so much? Enjoy the newborn phase!! It goes by so quickly.
I was wondering the same thing. My husband could only be home for 3 week intervals when I had my kids and same with our upcoming one. I could barely go to the bathroom or shower 1x a week. Definitely didn’t have time to workout and then shower/style hair after.
I tend to wash my hair by washing my hair with a shampoo. I use a wide tooth comb. In winter I also blow dry it with a diffuser (curly) so that I don’t have to leave the house with wet hair and get a cold. Not including the Olaplex treatment or the fancy gadgets (a towel for 30$?) you just demonstrated using 200$ worth of product on a regular wash day. These products certainly last a long time. But they are a considerable investment. So, I have an honest question to you as a board certified dermatologist. How did mankind (the human animal) survive until now without all these products and routines? Does all this have anything to do with hair health or everything with society’s beauty standards?
