@@brenthooton3412 That’s exactly what I was gonna say!
That catcher was robbed. That was INCREDIBLE footwork.
The catcher was slow to tag. If it wasn't for his feet preventing the runner from touching home base, the runner would have made it. Watch 1:14 at x.25 speed.
@@arthurneddysmith obviously, but what’s your point? That’s part of the “incredible footwork” the commenter is talking about… he blocked the plate with his legs, which was legal since he had the ball.
@@arthurneddysmith he only was there bc that's where the throw took him. Which is permitted by the rule. Like explicitly permitted. You don't need to slow it down. Bc it's allowed.
@@FighteroftheNightmantechnically he could have fielded the ball from his original spot. Because he moved a step over (when he could have caught it) is the reason it was over turned.
@@FighteroftheNightman The throw didn't take him there, though. His need for perfect positioning did. He could have made the catch from his original position, but it would have allowed the runner to score. The movement wasn't to field, it was to prepare for the tag, which the rule does not protect.
Twins fan here… Rocco never gets upset like this in front of cameras. The best part that Bally Sports edited out of the postgame interview is when he said the call was “chickenshit” 😂
Gardy is probably proud of this one.

Can't say chickenshit, though. You can't say that. You gotta say horseshit.
Some baseball players need to start saying “pigshit” or “hogshit” to complete the barnyard trilogy.

The best part about this is that Rocco never flips out like this😂 he always is so calm and collected
It was such a shock that he was actually watching the game for a change and wasn’t just buried in his spreadsheets and charts.
Rocco is actually, shockingly, only one ejection away from the second most ejections in Twins history. But his ejections are usually fairly tame. This ejection would make Gardy blush.
i laughed so hard when the first thing he did when he came out of the dugout was to throw his hat.. i was like, this is going to be good
Which is probably why the umps didn't toss him. They were just like, yeah man, we get it.
@Tejesh Patel I’m anti managers using them as literally the only tactic for strategy. Baldelli is one of the absolute _worst_ managers in the league for this. He manages his team like it’s one of those shitty mobile “games “ that plays itself for you and all you have to do is just equip better gear than the enemy and you automatically win. He completely neglects that baseball is actually played by humans whose statistics and effectiveness are fluid

Hey Mr. Wick, I just wanted to say I have major respect for you and I hope your doing well after the last time I saw you and you were double crossed by the hotel concierge and owner. Can’t wait to see you in #4.
As a former catcher, this is an excellent breakdown. If I got ran during this play or called for obstruction then I’d be butthurt af because this is 100% legal. This same rule exists in most leagues for younger players and I would’ve handled this the exact same way as Sanchez at every point during my playing time.
Stop blocking the plate. Simple.
A 1b does not block the bag. 2b and 3b do not block the bag on steals.
I would coach my runners, if he appears to being prepared to block, clock him.
Elbows up, head high. Catchers have LEARN. Do not block the plate.
The only reason they do is because they have armor on their lower body. I guarantee you they wouldn’t do it they didn’t have it.
@@fw8465 This isn't about who's got more guts. The point being made is that the catcher's positioning should have been regarded as legal. I don't think he should either risk injury from a player someone like you is coaching, or else move to the side just so your runner can have an open lane to the plate.
Furthermore, coaching your players (if you're in the majors) to "clock" the catcher may lead to a determination that 7.13 (Buster Posey rule) was violated. Plus it's just effing dangerous. You're just going to invite retaliation (either by the catcher on the next runner who tries it, or by the pitcher). That sort of BS is why hockey changed the icing call. Even with people trying to play clean without coaches try to instigate mayhem, injuries happen.
@BLT1967too except he was dropping to block the plate prior to actually having possession of the ball, which is flat out by the books a rule break.

There might be a good breakdown in Sunday's Yankees @ Cardinals game. The home plate umpire had a pretty strange strike zone, and I think the Yankees manager got ejected for arguing about it. It was quite a exciting game between two very good teams!
Lol. yankees manager gets tossed for arguing strikes all the time
Jomboy spent so many years making breakdowns with the intention of convincing us Gary Sanchez was a good catcher, that he’s still doing it even when he’s not a Yankee.
He’s made multiple videos talking about how bad Gary is like the “worst tag attempt you’ll ever see” and another where he talks about all the passed balls Gary gave up.
He’s the worst defensive catcher in baseball, and it’s not close. Shitty framer, awful blocker, all around bad catcher.
However, that was textbook and should have stayed as an OUT call. And that’s coming from a Jays fan. I mean, I’ll take it, I like that the Jays won, but the ball was in the catchers possession long before runner got to the plate. He made a good tag. He’s out. Bottom line.

That is a ridiculous call. The catcher had the ball. The catcher gambled he’d have it before the runner got there and he was right. I did the same move as catch since little league!
He blocked the plate, it's clear as day.
You don't understand the rule. Sanchez blocked the plate long before he had the ball. The fact that Merrifield wasn't at the plate yet is irrelevant. Sanchez was blocking the plate when Merrifield was halfway to home, meaning he didn't give the runner a path to the plate, meaning that NO MATTER what happens when the ball and/or Merrifield reach home, the runner must be called safe. He violated the rule long before he had the ball, and he has a history of doing that.
@@puckerings doesn’t the rule say if the player needs to adjust to make a play he can? Was he just supposed to let the ball fly by? He had to adjust a bit. You need overwhelming evidence to over turn a call. Some random person who prob never played ball over turned that umps correct call from NYC.

There's three different ways this could've gone:
1. Call is confirmed. That's the correct answer, per the play and the rulebook. This is what should've been called.
2. Call stands. That means that they're not sure either way, so the original call is accepted. This is a wrong answer, because the call should've been confirmed, but hey, the rule is confusingly worded and messy, so I'd get it and understand the confusion. Plus, the outcome is the same, so that helps.
3. Call is overturned. This means that they're certain enough to bet their families on it. That's how sure they must be to overturn. Without a shadow of a doubt. Somehow, despite video evidence to the contrary, some person(s) in the booth were so confidently incorrect that they reversed the correct ruling and embarrassed themselves and the league. Either that or they didn't understand/remember that they can use "Call stands" if it's 50/50.

@@extremebeastreaction6245 We just got two managers ejected, not a big deal.
@@shadowind30 I meant because the Yankees pitching sucked
I see lots of people asking so I’ll try to explain what ik. I believe the justification was that Sanchez moving from in front of the plate, to straddling it was not necessary to make a play on the ball as he could reach it from the normal position with a clear lane still available and that he dropped his leg too early before he had the ball leaving merrifield with no where to choose to slide.
Not saying I agree with it but I see what they’re saying. I thought the call on the field as per the rules was correct
That is exactly MLB's interpretation. That big step left prior to catching the ball with that step back to the right was the issue. Stupid rule. This is when the letter of the rule goes beyond the spirit of the rule(See Brady Tuck Rule).
Every time I see this replay, the more I think the booth got it right. Gary could have caught the ball without repositioning himself. That's what cost them the out. But if this went against the Jays, I would have been pissed.
I agree with the final decision. To be fair, catchers are a bit handcuffed, but similarly so is a first basemen if the throw takes them into the lane. You're in danger of being trucked, but that isn't allowed anymore (which I also agree with). Gary set up properly, but the throw took him into the lane. My question is, what is the baserunner supposed to do once the catcher steps in front of the plate before they have the ball? If he slides around the plate it gives the catcher more time to make a tag. Sliding right into the plate is the quickest option but he ran into the catcher's leg before the tag was applied because the catcher's leg was in front of the plate before he even had the ball. It's lose-lose for the runner because they can't bulldoze the catcher anymore but runners consequently need a path to the plate. It doesn't matter if the throw beats them if the tag doesn't. The catcher can't have their leg there before the ball arrives and he did. We don't know if the tag would've beaten them because the leg of the catcher prevented the runner from reaching the bag and that leg was in place before the ball was in the glove of the catcher.
Congratulations on the win jomboy.

I watched this game with my dad. When this happened, he asked me “is your John-boy guy going to do a video on this?” and has asked me every day since if the video is out.
"Absolutely blocked the plate." Jomboy is a treasure.
he went to get the ball, he had it and then “blocked the plate” and at that level it should be known to slide on the outside of the baseline to avoid this stuff
Merrifield admitted after the game that he intentionally slid into Sanchez to try and draw a call. So now we have flopping in the MLB...
@@flip9118 The runner is not compelled to hook slide. He has a right to the baseline, unless the catcher has no alternative except to field the ball ON the baseline. He can't CHOOSE to field the ball on the baseline if he could have fielded it OFF the baseline.
So if Merrifield wants to slide down the middle of the basepath, that's his prerogative to do so.
@@chad1755 I said in a different comment that I can't get mad at him for gaming the system, it's the umps who called him safe that suck

As a jays fan, I’m glad it was overturned. As a Jomboy fan, I knew as soon as I seen this play it should’ve been an out.
This rule is too difficult, it was made to protect the players but the only way for Merrifield to be safe was to run over Sanchez which the league is trying to prevent from happening
"Hat on, kinda young, got the beard, full of energy. Hat off, tired dad." 😆
To overturn the play that was already called out, is just mind blowing.
I am a Jays fan , but baseball needs to be fair and consistent.
It was a horrible call.
Awesome narration, "He was out!" 🤣 🤣 🤣
The rule is VERY flawed, and very confusing, because what exactly does "blocking the pathway of the runner" mean? Does this mean on contact? Or does it mean simply standing in the runner's lane?
Because if it's on contact, there is a MAJOR flaw in this rule. You see, the runner has to avoid contact at all cost. You cant steamroll a catcher anymore. So if the catcher is blocking the plate before he gets the ball, there is no lane for the runner to score at all. The catcher can basically sit on home plate, and just hope that he catches the ball before the runner makes contact. Essentially, this means that runners cant avoid tags. They simply cant score, unless they beat the throw itself.
This is why I feel that "blocking the pathway of the runner" is not about contact. Its about not providing a lane in general. Which brings me to this play.
At exactly 3:00 in the video, you can see Sanchez has his leg in front of the plate. He then motions to block before he has the ball. This makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE for Merrifield to score in the scenario unless he does some crazy, otherworldly acrobatics. What can Merrifield do? Sanchez is already blocking the plate, so all Sanchez has to do is GET the ball before contact is made, block Merrifield with the leg that was already blocking anyway, and make a simple tag. Merrifield could not dodge a tag. He was dead to rights before Sanchez got the ball.
The booth likely deemed that Sanchez did not provide a running lane aka "blocked the pathway of the runner" before he received the ball.
Now, some might say "Sanchez shuffled over because he needed to receive the throw." And I would say that's very false. Sanchez caught the ball with a tucked arm. If Sanchez provided a lane and was in front of homeplate, he would've still been able to field the throw.
A similar play happened in 2014 with Marlins vs Reds. Here was MLB's statement :
"The Replay Official judged that the catcher did not provide a lane to the runner and hindered his path to the plate without possession of the ball," the statement read. "The throw also did not force the catcher into the runner's pathway. As a result, in accordance with Rule 7.13, the ruling on the field was overturned and the run was allowed to score."
So according to MLB, you HAVE to provide a lane in order to avoid this scenario altogether. MLB likely saw that Sanchez's foot was already blocking the pathway before he got the ball, and determined that he did not provide a lane for Merrifield. They also deemed that the throw didnt force Sanchez into the pathway either.
It's a flawed rule. It needs revision. But if "providing a lane" is necessary, then Merrifield is safe. Sucks, but true.
“Don’t ever doubt us again”😂
Watching this makes me give Gary hella props for his catcher skills
🤣😂🤣Sanchez and catcher skills🤣😂🤣
When will baseball learn? The replay rule should be a tremendous asset. But when in doubt, even the tiniest sliver of doubt, never overturn a call. I'd love to hear them explain this one.
From what I’ve heard the two replay officials had different opinions. One thought the call should stand, the other thought it should be overturned. Apparently they went to a third guy for assistance who wasn’t even supposed to be on the replay crew that day, and it was his decision to overturn the call. Most likely a biased Blue Jays fan

He stepped in before he had the ball and the ball would have went to him if he was a step back. He definitely blocked the plate and didnt need to be where he was in order to catch the ball. He could have caught the ball while still giving a lane and giving himself a chance to tag the runner. They made the right call.
Ahhhh. No. But, thanks for sharing.
As a Jays fan, even I thought it was a terrible call 😂 I was questioning why we were even reviewing it as he was 100% out
Just the other day the Padres catcher got called for blocking the plate even though he moved out of the way before the runner started sliding. I had no idea that was illegal. "The more you know..."
I still remember when Rocco played for the Rays, shame injuries screwed over his career
Would have been a great career. I loved him as a player.
Tons of respect to the umps (and I hate that I’m saying that) to not throw Rocco outta there. He was mad and they umps knew he was mad at the booth, not them and this was his like appeal to the MLB.
Yes! I was writing in other threads that we NEED a Jomboy breakdown of this and lip reading. (Huge Twins fan here, full disclosure)
anyone who likes baseball and understands the rule should agree here.
@@boerhae Agree with what exactly, you're unclear.
@@MarkJoseph81 with the fact that the replay officials messed up this call. anyone should agree, fan of the Twins or not
Not a good look for MLB to start overturning these kind of calls. What are the catchers supposed to make of this from now on? If they're making a fielding motion, do they try to leave a lane open and lose an advantage even though the rule clearly states that they're allowed to field a ball regardless?
This makes no sense. Someone f'd up on a whim and didn't understand the rule at all.
Catchers don't need to do anything different. It's just that the timing of the tag was obviously later than the runner would have touched home plate. The catcher didn't do anything wrong; the runner just beat the throw/tag. The officials made the correct call to overturn it as safe.
"Hat off...
...Tired dad" lol
when I first heard about this, my first though was that Rocco should just get over it and move on. Now that I have actually seen the play and this breakdown, I gotta agree that Merrifield should have been out. Rocco was right to flip out the way he did. That should not have been overturned. No sense dwelling on it though. Let the past stay in the past. Put it out of your mind and move on to the next game.
"Hat off Tired Dad" lmfao
The rule should be amended so you can't block the plate period. You can tag a runner without standing in his trajectory. If the throw is off too bad, field it without blocking the lane or the runner is safe
Whata beautiful play by the catcher holyy
Rocco’s slow clap was so weird lol
You are right JB that was textbook play by the catcher. If the rule was a painting that was the Mona Lisa!
I love watching a game in real time and realizing you’re watching a future Jomboy video, that being said, as a Jays fan I don’t think this was the right call.
Rhetorical question: how often do sports fans feel that the "wrong call" was made when it favors their team!?
How often does a fan feel a call to be wrong, even though the result favored their team ?
That's definitely one of the worst over turns I have ever seen. Everything Sanchez ( catcher ) did was perfect.
That man at 5:07 is really involved
I'm honestly confused as to how that could have possibly been overturned. The umps on the field even looked baffled. It's like the umps in NY were pranking the umps on the field knowing they were gonna get screamed at by the manager lol
I’m an umpire. I usually defend the umpires. That was a terrible call. Coaches never understand the blocking rule. I had a coach in softball go ballistic on me because she wanted blocking on a steal at second. The ball beat the runner by about 5 steps and the shortstop was standing in the base path with the ball lol.
You only need the opening footage. Sanchez blocks the plate without the ball and he didn’t need to do so to catch the ball. He moves left but catches back to the middle/right even though he needs to tag to the left. He was blocking the plate the entire time after he stepped left.
The catcher should ALWAYS have to stay at of or behind or to the side of the plate to make a catch. Think about it, you can run way up the line "to catch a throw" from left field. Especially if the fielder is by the foul line when he makes the throw. If this was a legal move say the ball was late but up the line and the catcher goes up the line to catch ball the runner could literally run right threw the catcher trying to kill or end catchers career just before the ball even gets to him. No one wants that to happen all over the place. So the catcher needs to stay out of the path until he has the ball. If you think about safety it's really common sense.
lol as soon as I saw this on TV, I knew you were doing a video. I'm only surprised it "took so long" (Sarcastic in quotes, it was actually pretty quick)
