I find it really interesting they gave Malcolm the Atla Palani reprint rather than, say, Dr. Henry Wu, an actual scientist who takes care of the dinosaurs. And shows up in the movies during the egg scenes.
I don’t see Pantlaza as much of a dinosaur commander like Gishath, but more of a Blink commander that uses Dinos. Since she triggers herself, you only need around 20 Dino’s with good etbs and then load up on white blink and red clone effects. It’ll be a lot stronger than Gishath because just repeatedly one sided wiping with Wakening Sun’s Avatar or casting 5 spells each turn blinking Etali, or even just the basic ramp and fight ETB Dinos to pull ahead. Seems absurd in power level.
Admiral Brass goes well with Breath of Fury since she can keep reanimating new pirates to keep the chain going. However, I do have a philosophical problem with her card text. Tribes in Magic are more than just their literal creature types, Tribes have associated mechanics. For example, Zombies care about the graveyard: they can mill and loot to fill your graveyard, use aristocrat and death triggers to benefit yourself, and of course reanimate themselves. Faeries are tricky: they can flash in during opponents turns and strike you opponents to tempo them. What are the pirate mechanics? Pirates care about attacking, stealing your opponents things, and creating treasures. The original Beckett Brass is a good example of this: attack with three pirates and gain control of an opponents permanent. The new Admiral Brass is not a pirate in terms of her mechanics. She's milling and reanimating which seems like some kind of Warlock magic or necromancy. If you blanked out the reference to the literal pirate creature type in the card text you would be hard pressed to guess the tribe she's leading. This isn't a big problem (I'm just complaining about tribal commanders that possibly make their tribes playable) but I am a little concerned about Wizards breaking the Tribal pie(?) -- it's like the color pie but for creature types -- in some of their new commanders. The recent Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir is another recent tribal commander that doesn't mechanically fit with the tribe it is supposedly leading. I feel like tribal commanders should work with their tribes mechanics instead of adding random effects. Perhaps this could work as flavor if the reanimator pirate commander was a skeleton pirate who brought pirates back as skeleton pirates as a reference to Davy Jones locker. I could be completely off and perhaps that is what they are going for with this card.
Graveyard theme makes some sense since its a grixis tribe but I agree that it makes 0 sense based on previous tribe identity. Maybe this set pirat gimmic will be milling or looting ? Wots like to swich tribe mechanics from set to set for example in shadow over innistrad block main vampire mechanic was madness and in crimson vow/midnight hunt it was blood tokens and spectacle.
I was kind of hoping a new Becket Brass would have some kind of on-theme accelerator effect to get your pirates out faster. Something she can trigger herself like "Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to an opponent, you may draw a card. If that creature was a pirate, create a treasure token." Don't get me wrong, I like the new Beckett Brass's recursion mechanic more than the lord and theft of the original. The big problem I had with the original Beckett Brass was that in commander it would often stall out whenever there was a board wipe...
Funny that Clavileño isn't the first of the blessed bot in lore and probably also in gameplay: -Vito is actually the first to recieve Aclazotz blessing -You are probably playing it when you already have a non summoning sick vampire, so that one will become a demon first and be "First of the blessed"
Yo! Admiral Brass is now Captain Barbosa! She makes "zombie pirates ". Pirate aggro could be decent. She lets you keep the pressure up or recover from a boardwipe. Plus theres some potential with Pirate Reanimator. Angrath's Mauraders can end games quickly with just a few pirates out.
Clavileño doesn't state that they have to be non-token creatures, so it'll also be fantastic in the 99 for Edgar Markov where you can trade up your 1/1 non-flying vampire tokens for 4/3 flying vampire demon tokens.
@Tomer I'd like to point out the Discover isn't strictly better then cascade, at least when you counter my cascade card, I still get the new card, discover doesn't benefit from that. Pretty huge in some metas.
Admiral Brass goes insane with Port Razer because you can reanimate him and reset his attacks, basically attacking 6 times. Reanimate 3 pirates, sac Port Razer, bring back and attack again 3 more times.
I think you're misreading Life Finds a Way - it only triggers on big *nontoken* creatures entering the battlefield. so you need a populate deck that also casts big nontoken creatures. probably not Ghired, but maybe Atla Palani?
My Ghired deck runs less than 20 creatures making life finds a way a flop for me. It used to run 25ish with more spells that made big token creatures but I changed it to focus more on Ghired himself. If the card didn't read nontoken creature but had a once per turn restriction, I would have been more excited
Im not sure if discover is a superior version of cascade. since spells with cascade trigger on cast you usually cant prevent the cascade from happening.
I believe it is overall an upgrade. Yes, you can counter the creature with discover etb, but you can also blink them/clone them, so you can abuse the mechanic more. Also you don't waste the card if you are unlucky.
Pantlaza is just a really fun card. I like the new kinda fixed cascade. Too bad it's not a mono color card... I hate multicolor decks lol almost certainly gonna be putting together a mono green timmy dino deck after this set comes out.
indoraptor seems like a pretty straight forward dragons approach, solphim/torbrand etc deck, if you can keep the board clear to remove the sac creature choice , pretty powerful, one approach and its a 12/10
wait.. what Clash episode did Tomer play Licia in? I can't remember it and cannot seem to find the episode on the channel either.. or is it a not-yet-released video? either way, the Orzhov Vampire deck could be interesting for me. I love Black/White already and vampires is a cool tribe, but I always was a bit disappointed by the commander options - this one seems strong (but not too strong) and brings a nice mix of sacrifice & aggro with those 4/3 flying tokens
It's such a shame! The single appearance, man-made dinosaurs from newer movies are legends, but the most iconic creature in the 9 movie whole series isn't? I really want to know who made that stupid choice...
I think in this case it's because in most play patterns you will cast her during your first main phase and then you'll enter combat where she'll reanimate a fellow pirate. Her stats are low because she's usually two creatures for the price of one.
Meh. Dino deck doesn’t really synergize with old Dino’s and I’ll just leave Atla as the commander of my enrage Dino deck. Vampires. Nother thing for Edgar markov vampire go wipe aristocrats. Merfolk. Doing merfolk. Pirates. Keep og becket as commander to steal all your stuff but it’s going in the 99

He does the chaos part of the ability.
Ellie would of been a better choice, judging Atla is a female
I'm guessing that it's due to marketting and Jeff Goldbloom being 800% more recognizable.
They just wanted to do a Jeff Goldbloom secret lair basically, which is what that’s part of if I remember correctly?
@@zacharyenglish2904 Nope, these are gonna be in booster packs.

Wakening Sun’s Avatar is a cast from hand trigger; blinking and cloning don’t work for it unless you copy it on the stack
@@matthewverma3291not even that works out says Cast From Hand :/
I just wanted to note that the plant we can see behind Tomer looks like it's doing great.
A Zamioculcas i guess? Thats a really robust one ;)

Wotc knows that people hate theft so they wanted to avoid it this time
Thanks for this, I couldn’t quite put into words what I didn’t like about her new card but this hit the nail on the head.

pirate reanimation has been a thing before theres that card that brings pirates back to hand from og ixalan block
Power Conduit is BIS for Admiral Brass

That is where I will put it. Also lilianas contract doesn't work imo because all the demon have the same name
@@Whitebot187 also non-token vampires become demons in addition so it works
@@Whitebot187When you make the non-token vampires demons, they will all have different names.

Ellie and alan commander works well with the Evoke cycle creatures too.

Jund seems equally plausible color combo as Naya for dino identity, and the Indoraptor looks like a prime example for what Jund Dinos do
