Now that's how u make a repair video, that's why I like guy ,he shows u everything from start to finish, unlike other guys,u never know if they really fixed the problem, way to go hommie, maybe I should start doing my own repair videos ,just did a head job on my 94 Jeep Cherokee 4.0
Bleepin Jeep is GREAT. I don't even waste time searching the main youtube search bar for Jeep fixes, I just come to the Bleepin Jeep page. having schmoozed, I have to say, who doesn't clean bolts with a wire wheel/brush WD40 before installing them?
This was a great video. I've never done repairs more complex than changing a tail light or relay before but this video made this repair very simple. Thank you!
Hey Matt, Thanks for posting the video. I have to change my pump this weekend. Helpful guys like yourself who take the time to post videos are awesome!!
Thank you for showing me how to change my power steering pump. I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport (4.0 straight 6). My pump is starting to whine when I drive. I love my Jeep so I'm going to learn how to fix it myself. Thanks again.
My 95 Cherokee Sport thanks you.Your video far exceeds anything else in its class. I really could not find any other that shows the detail from removing and reinstalling power steering pump. Really didn't need my Haynes Service Manual.
bleepinjeep thanks so much for all the videos you put up! Im 17 and got an xj as my first car. Ive since lifted it and made many other aftermarket additions and your how-to videos have been extrememly helpful! Thanks again!
Matt, thanks for your video. I followed to the T. My only problem is that you should have the viewers pull off the fan and air box first giving me all the room I needed to work. On to changing the lines now.
no prob, glad I could help! Good for you! DIY is always great cause a shop would probably charge $400 to do this while it will only cost you $50 to do it yourself!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Please subscribe and or pass on my channel to anyone else you might know. Also, I'm always on the lookout for more how-to video ideas if you have any suggestions. Thanks,
Thanks to your video, I was able to change my Power Steering Pump within 2 hours. Finish to end. Only had to watch the part about pulling the pulley a few extra times. Other than that, the video was very well put together and I would love to see more Jeep videos in the future, like how to get rid of annoying "rear lamp failure" lights on the on board computer. I have changed all of the bulbs, they work and have the correct voltage and the fuses, but no luck. Still there. Tha
I know this is an old video but you had enough detail where I could figure out what bolts go where on my XJ!! I was thinking i lost a extremely long bolt but i had the matching shorter one that your video so clearly demonstrated! Again Thank you for this great video. My new engine is in, transmission is in and I am doing the fuel system in tomorrow. Hopefully have it running by 4th of July! The rebirth of this 29 year old XJ.
We cut the EGR tube that goes between the manifolds and then welded the fittings shut. I just pulled the vacuum lines and capped them off at the intake manifold, and left the valve on the intake. Some people make a blockoff plate and get rid of the valve on the intake. Took the solenoid off the fender and taped the harness to the loom that runs right next to it.
I fucking love your videos. So informational. You’ve helped me when I’ve been stuck on repairs so many times. You make owning a Jeep easy thanks my dude
somehow missed this one... yes I had that problem and it was the TCM. There is also a resistor or fuse or something close to the TCM, you might check that.
Thank you! I starting working on my 2.5 steering pump this morning. One thing I noticed is if you take the serpentine belt off you can rotate the pulley and use a socket wrench through the pulley holes.
You were right when you said the setup would be similar for other jeeps. We did encounter a FEW differences while takin the pump off my grand cherokee. But nothing that looked much different than your setup. That adjusting screw is not there at all, so to get the belt we turned the tension pulley. We used a crowbar for leverage. Secondly at 3:29, We had to soak that connection with some rust penetration over dinner before it would break loose. Would have collapsed the line if we didn't use lube, giggidy. 7:26 No bracket to worry about. Installing new pump tomorrow, expecting it to be easier than removing the old one. I hope this info is useful to any WJ owners.
It can if you run low on fluid. When the fluid gets low you will get air in the system and or the fluid will boil. This can cause excess wear on the pump. You also may need to purge air from the system. Just leave off the cap and turn wheel from lock to lock several times. If you never ran low on fluid then it is probably unrelated and just needs to be changed anyway.
Just did this today. Thanks for the guide. I don't know if its just mine or not but mine is a 96 Cherokee sport, some of the bolts are in different Places, the tensioner is pointed the opposite way, and the bolt that goes thru that is in the middle of a tensioner pully right below the PS pump pulley... Same basic idea tho. Really helped to take the air box and fan out. Simple to do and makes it a breeze.
I learned a lot Joel... The pump wasn't even on the list. I did the track bar a tie rod u joints wheel bearings and the steering gear box. I put it all back together and found that the PS pump was too weak...
well if you can, get a wrench on the nut below it. if not you could pull the pump and turn the pump in circles to get it off. Or cut the hardline if you have to. I think they are about 15-20$.
Did you mention flushing the system first before installing the new one? I don't know if that is required, but I believe it is recommended. Thanks for the video. Why the heck did Jeep put so many bolts on that pump... :/
probably the 8.25 as the 44 is very rare and only on a 87 2wd. You can tell by the shape. I have the TSL bias ply and love em. The boggers are pretty much for mud only.
in order to just change the pulley, do I need to take the whole assembly out? or can I just use the pulley puller to pull the old one and put the new one in? Thanks in advance
What brand of pump is that? I am having a hard time figuring out what ot put on there. All I here is bad reviews from every manufacturer. Got any real info? HELP!!
Question: So i have a awful squealing when i start up my jeep. It does not squeal when belt is off. Changed the harmonic balancer. Do to it being broke and the belt stopped moving. It still starts but its squealing still.. Any ideas?
I like that you show most of your stuff on a renix, every other video you see is 91+. Since yours is just a wheeler why dont you work on getting rid of some of the vacuum stuff? I have gotten rid of the EGR and am working on the cruise control (doesnt work) and vacuum disconnect stuff now. Mine is a DD. That power steering setup is the 87-95 style, in 96 they changed it a little, but its still pretty close. I run Dexron in the power steering system, same as trans. One less fluid to carry around.
Matt, you F***ing crack me up! Entertainment aside, you're vids are great help. I have a small leak on 90 YJ and will be changing the pump soon. Love the 20' fluid geyser across the garage!
You guys know of any way to increase the output pressure of a stock XJ power steering pump? I'm thinking about going up a size or two on the hole for the pressure relief valve
Any advice for getting a stubborn pressure hose off the pump? The bolt should spin around the hard line but it won't budge. In fact the nut that its threaded into on the pump itself came loose first. I could probably cut the hard line and unscrew both of them together and try to separate them later. Tried a lubricant but now that the lower nut is loose the whole thing keeps turning.
Woule it work if you put the cap on when turning the wheels to get the bubbles out? Broke down in dryden ontario coming fron calgary heading to collingwood ont. Parts coming in at 4pm. Bearing gone on my pulley and I guess melted the seal. Atf4 and metal flakes everywhere uggggg
Yes, make sure to press the pulley on about the same on the new pump as it was on the old pump. If it's out of alignment you'll have to take it off and push or pull the pulley in or out a bit.
Bleepin need your insight bud. I was listening to you on xjtalk. I have 2000 xj and the high pressure p/s hose leaks when you turn wheel all the way. It's been that way for 2 months. Now when I start engine in colder weather pump sounds bad until it warms up. Can a leak in a hose ruin a pump?
What kind of fluid are you using? I've read that some say to use ATF and others say to use parts store brand power steering fluid. Also, any thoughts on upgrading to a wk pump over a stock replacement?
next time one goes out I will. you can watch this vid to see how to take off the belt then the alternator is easy, just remove and reinstall. make sure to disconnect your battery first.
I have a question on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4L I6. The other day I replaced the alternator and when got it all out back together it started making that squealing noise like it has a pulley alignment issue. I went ahead and replaced the tension pulley. That worked for a day or so but then it was right back at it. It squeels real bad when I turn on the A/C but the sound is coming from the area around the tension pulley and the power steering pulley. I did the water test on ribbed side and the sound goes away. have any suggestions?
It has a dana 30.and either the 8.25 rear our the 44 how do you tell my question i live in buffalo NY mostly mud plan to rock crawl a little should i get the ssr tires like you have our go for boogers thanks bud
have a question want to change front and rear axles on my 93 cherokee for 01 wjs that will include the suspension any sugetion as to difficulty level thanks for any help
The WJ has a coil spring rear suspension whereas the XJ has leaf spring, so that would require major modification. Also the WJ front axle is a low pinion whereas the xj is high pinion. You are creating a lot of work for yourself.
It would have helped if you showed us the reason why you changed the pump? have 2000 jeep Cherokee Sport never made any type pump noise until i had a garage swap a leaking line, returned the jeep to me and as soon as i started it i could hear pump noise.have taken it back to the clown who changed the hose and he tells me someone hand to run the pump dry,yes him, this never happened to me. So he tells me that what im hearing is the bering in the pump then tells me to leave it alone it's not really bad.So i took it a jeep dealer and had him listen too it, A tech listened to it and tells me what he hears is normal, well ive put 40 thousand miles on this jeep and never had to listen to the power steering pump at idle.(If you have any idea's drop me a line). To me it sounds like a worn bering. To me the pump makes some small belt noise when you first start it up then that turns into berin noise.Never made this noise until the hacker swapped out the power steering line.
Although your video was SUPER HELPFUL, you put the pulley tool on wrong and it really confused me as you didn’t show the correct method and I’ve never used those damn things before. Anyway thanks!
you've made my last 2+ years as a Jeep owner the best experience ever. Thanks so much for all the videos.
+Stephane Daury well thanks for watching man!
By far the best go-to source of jeep info I've found period. Simple, to the point, and honest. Great job.

just changed mine on the 01. watched your video 5 or 6 times pausing it to make sure on a few things. thanks for making this video. I'm subscribed!
Hey, Great job. Not sure how much you just saved me in labor, but, appreciate it.
About $400
We cut the EGR tube that goes between the manifolds and then welded the fittings shut.

Funny stuff , when you described the fluid shooting all over the garage :) thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
somehow missed this one... yes I had that problem and it was the TCM. There is also a resistor or fuse or something close to the TCM, you might check that.
most of the vacuum stuff on my green jeep is gone. how do you get rid of the egr?
Thank you! I starting working on my 2.5 steering pump this morning. One thing I noticed is if you take the serpentine belt off you can rotate the pulley and use a socket wrench through the pulley holes.

Babe, thanks so much for fixing my car. It really means so much to me that I have to to help me like this. You mean so much to me, I love you!
Thank you so much for this!, I have no one to rely on an I don't wanna pay someone when I can do it myself!, No more bad part steering
well if you can, get a wrench on the nut below it. if not you could pull the pump and turn the pump in circles to get it off. Or cut the hardline if you have to. I think they are about 15-20$.

If I remember right, if the NSS switch is out it wont crank at all. also, something about not having reverse lights when that is bad.
Thanks for making these videos Matt!
So I'm doing the same as you are, but my new pump has no threads in the holes for me to mount my old bracket screws into?
so when you turned on the jeep and it turned on was the ignition coil connected from the spark plugs. ?
What brand of pump is that? I am having a hard time figuring out what ot put on there. All I here is bad reviews from every manufacturer. Got any real info? HELP!!

Hey Matt,
Replacing my leaking hoses, I broke the elbow off the reservoir. Can I replace the reservoir without taking the whole pump out?
Thanks!
Did the same today, you'll need to remove the whole thing

did you ever have belt misalignment issues after replacing your pump/pulley?
Yes, make sure to press the pulley on about the same on the new pump as it was on the old pump. If it's out of alignment you'll have to take it off and push or pull the pulley in or out a bit.
Thank you so much . From FRANCE .
Thanks! I'll be replacing it this weekend as well as my master cylinder. watched your video on that too. very helpful!

I've been thinking of upgrading to the WJ pump as well.
OK thank you also thinking it could be nss need to take it apart and clean it and all the grounds by the oil dipstick and change back ground on motor

Matt where did you get yours at I cant find the pump or pulley I need to replace the whole thing and the hoses too I have 87 XJ
Autozone probably
Matt i have a 97 xj it won't down shift ever herd that problem before thinking of making it an ax15 i changed the tcm all ready one more question
I have a question on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4L I6. bleepinjeep It's a manual tensioner, how do I decide how much tension should be on it. Just mess around with it tell it stops?
Thanks. Good video... Was wondering about changing the pulley. Now i know. 😀
Information was Very Helpful,THANKS!!!
It has a dana 30.and either the 8.25 rear our the 44 how do you tell my question i live in buffalo NY mostly mud plan to rock crawl a little should i get the ssr tires like you have our go for boogers thanks bud
gives it character
How did you remove the power steering return hose please?
Can you do a video on how to chamge the 4.0 alternator. Mine went out on my comanche and i dont want to dive into it without knowing what im doing
Would it be a bad idea to use the old resovior for the new pump?
Michael Cancino if it's still good then why not...
Where are common areas on the power steering pump that can cause leaks? my pump has a little fluid on the bottom but I can't tell where it's from.
The mating surface, and the weep hole
It probably would but it'd be easier with the cap off.
Mine came with a little Teflon ring too. Anyone know what that is for?
have a question want to change front and rear axles on my 93 cherokee for 01 wjs that will include the suspension any sugetion as to difficulty level thanks for any help
The WJ has a coil spring rear suspension whereas the XJ has leaf spring, so that would require major modification. Also the WJ front axle is a low pinion whereas the xj is high pinion. You are creating a lot of work for yourself.
is that hydraulic ?
So just pour fluid all over the shop floor then? Is kitty litter on your supply list? ;) just kidding, thanks for the great work and video.
Anybody know the size of the bolts that mount the PS pump bracket to the Water Pump? One of mine is missing :/
Thanks for the vid.
Ive been planning to but I need 875 hours in a day...
I'm digging the goggles.
Thank you
Ive never had problems with mine so if it aint broke, dont fix it.
I must have 12 hours of sleep daily
No Prob!
thanks bro.

make sure you start with a clean engine before you show the world how to work on a motor, that is nasty
