      I love bird baths. I had two out in my yard and filled them every morning. One year a large blue jay discovered them and commandeered one for his morning dip. He'd chase any other bird away and flop into the bowl for a long bath. I swear he was practicing for a Channel swim. He had an excellent backstroke that he worked on until all the water was gone from that bowl. Then he shook his wings and flew away. I went out and refilled the bowl. This lasted all summer long.

    • @shadowhund
      @shadowhund Год назад

      @@dulcilass there seems to be a problem with alges, even when we change water daily. My brother told me they found several birds dead (in German we say Grünfink) in their garden so they called NABU in Germany (it's a nature foundation for birds and their surroundings) and they said the green/black alges did kill them😞

    • @dulcilass
      @dulcilass Год назад

      @@shadowhund Fortunately I never had problems with algae in my birdbaths. I changed the water daily. Since the bowls were very easy to clean they got scrubbed regularly. No algae but but the birds sat along the rims and frequently left deposits there.

      @@dulcilass I will have to change the place of the water because of the bird feeder above some food falls into the water too. I cleaned the water bowl with vinegar, it should help to get rid of bacteria and alges. What are you doing in winter temperatures?

      If you’re talking about the ones in the bath, I *think* the first one was a parent. Since these owlets are out of the nest and flying around, they’d be close to the same size as a full grown adult. And the first one seems a bit larger and looks to have less downy feathers. The second one still looks very fluffy. Sure, an argument can be made that the first is an elder sibling as there can be a significant difference between siblings due to the way the eggs are laid and how they are fed (eldest usually eats the most), but I’m still guessing that’s the parent.

But I'll never forget the night I went back in the woods, and something swooped down at my head. I went back with a flashlight, and there was a screech owl looking down at me from the trees! They must have had a nest up there, and she was flying down to protect her babies! After that, I'd go back to check on them every evening and she'd always fly down near me, staring at me from the trees. It was cool hearing their song all summer that year.

I couldn't help laughing when one of the owlets sat on the sun-powered lamp and caused it to switch on. It seemed from the footage that another owlet tried to provoke the same result when it sat on another one in the background but didn't quite manage it until the moment it opened its wings to flutter away. Nice also to watch the young one pondering by the side of the bath and watching its Mum to figure out what to do, then gathering its courage and finally enjoying the experience. He's a big fella, isn't he? Our local owls don't get anywhere near that big but they're just as amazing & fun to watch.

      Yes, these owlets are all siblings that fledged from an owl house just above the birdbath.

    Oh thank you for this video, it's an absolute delight! I lived in a suburban area, but large yards and across from a wooded stream, off Lake Ontario. Each year, for a while, a family of these Eastern Screech owls would appear, mid summer. It so lovely listening to them call for hours. Caught glimpse of them all sitting in a row along a limb, like 4 inch building bricks lol. My very first encounter was of a flightless young owlet in between my two composters... surprised me as I approached to unload my bucket and I took a few steps back having no clue what creature was oogling me with its big intent eyes, my first thought was gremlin lol.
