As a black female, another popular offensive question we get is, “is your hair real?” When we grow our hair really long and leave it in its natural curls. It’s offensive because people assume all of us wear wigs, fake hair all the time and that our hair can’t grow out long and be beautiful just live someone with naturally straight hair.. When some of us literally don’t do anything to it but wash it, comb/brush it and style it.

    • @bellacortez

That's not racist. Its very rare to see a black woman wear her natural hair/texture so if they think it may actually be her hair they are asking out of curiosity. Nothing racist about it.

Not typing this in a argumentative way, just wanted to say something for this particular thing.
As a black person in Japan, I get that question often, but I think you're assuming a lot of additional context that certainly doesn't apply across the board here the way it usually does in the West. For instance a student will ask if my locks are my real hair, then I explain my hair is an afro and that if I twist it, it can become locks. Then they immediately try to do it on the spot (followed by me explaining that their hair texture has to be permed to do so while mine doesn't, which they didn't know) with "that's amazing/pretty/cool", "I wanna do it too!" comments, or maybe none at all. The question does come often, but doesn't immediately mean the person asking is looking down on us. They rarely see it here (especially small cities) AND can't do it naturally the way we can, so of course on first sight a person can be surprised and curious seeing something they only see in person if they see me. Also, most people I know here have very little knowledge of our wig use, too lol. Like, they super don't know about it at all since they don't really use them aesthetically like we do lol!

I know that all cultures have their beauty standards and history, but it did sadden me to see some of them worry about their skin being ''dark'' or ''black''. I know that in Korea skin color is a huge deal, but I would still like to say to these kids that there is no shame in being slightly tanner, tan, or lmao straight-up black bro. Tanning is a natural thing and should be considered nothing more than a natural thing. I find it interesting that some of these kids think they look dark when to me they look white/pale. Colorism is definitely a matter that needs to be talked about more seriously around the world. I wonder when will come the time that people stop complying with unrealistic and senseless beauty standards and start realizing that they are perfect the way they are...

Koreans especially have some issues in regards to looks and skin color. As do many Asian countries. Lighter skin versus darker skin. Double eyelids versus single eyelids. Then you have the issue of body size. height and weight. And those issues are all internal irrespective of any issues dealing with foreigners or sexual orientation. Prejudice, stereotypes, bigotry and discrimination are issues I think all countries have in some regards or another. It's something we all need to be aware of and handle on a daily basis. That isn't what some fools call "politically correct" but just doing the right thing. Denying its existence doesn't make it go away. Nor does it fix the problem. If your car's engine is sputtering can you just ignore it? Wish it to go away. No of course not. So you can't just wish racism away or ignore its existence. You can't just believe it is fixed already. Or think that talking about it is some offense to you. Not being honest and open won't fix racism or make everyone get along better. Only through understanding and empathy can we make the situation better.

To be honest white people with curly hair, usually had a black descent of some kind along the family line. But it then was neutralized as two white parents kept breeding. Therefore, those white people who do have curly hair had a black person in their family tree at one moment in time. Since white people usually have naturally straight hair and if something is different a POC( most likely a black person) probably had a child with one of her white ancestors. Then, somehow that one gene that carried curly hair ended up in your niece's gene pool. Resulting, in her curly hair.

    • @graciie77
      @graciie77 2 года назад

@@lilychoi1312 I advice you to look up some genetic studies and some world history. White people(europeans, north africans, west asians) have the most diverese native gene pool. Our hair is not natively "straight". We have the whole range of hair types and it's obvious. The most genetically straight have people from central, south, east asian countries. Idk how a "poc" (a already deemed racist term) who's not black would make out hair curlier and not the opposire-"straigher".
Also we did genetic testing, no african gentics present. And even if we didn't do testing it's scientifically proven that any race can have "afro" hair or also called 4a, 4b ,4c hair- the level of intensity of curls.

Sunscreen questions too, asking that bcz I’m dark so I don’t need uva protection or how I don’t get sunburn or if our skin get dark/tan in the sun. Yes we do get sunburn(complication: hyperpigmentation and photoaging) but not as much as pale/fair complexion, we also use sunscreen, our skin can get darker or redder under the sun but that doesn’t necessary means no sun tan, (melanocytes) we get more tanned again depending on skin complexion on how dark or fair you are.
If I’ve been living in Europe, I got diagnosed with anemia and vitamin d,iron deficiency. Dark-skinned people need six times more sun than white-skinned people to get enough Vitamin D.

The number of customers that have just said ni hao or arigato to me, or did that bow with the hands. During lunar new year, some of them would say the mando and canto phrase for "happy new year" while butchering them of course. While I understand what they're saying, that shit's still not ok.
One of our regulars (who is absolutely not asian in any way) kept saying he could related to me because he thinks of himself as bruce lee. I fuckin-
And then when I say my ehtnicity is none of their business, they get offended.
If someone DOES happen to find out I'm korean, they just assume I like kdramas and kpop (which I absolutely do not), and want me to teach them korean. If not that route, there's always the "omg are you north or south" question.
There was also this thing that happened in all my spanish classes where the students were surprised that I was bad at math but good at spanish (which I don't thnk I was. and I certainly have forgotten most of it now)
On top of that, there was another layer because while I am fully ethnically korean, my grandma knew japanese because of the era she was born into, so I picked that up from her. If I was caught speaking japanese (and these particular students knew quickly, because most of our school was made up of anime fans), then there'd be a whole thing about that, and some assholes even saying that I probably am a ninja or something. Shit was weird.

When I did tell they just told me to ignore it. It was so bad that I would go home crying. So I couldn't handle it anymore I finally fought back by punching the guy. The teacher couldn't do shyt because I did it on the last day of school. And mind you this was back in 1996 when everyone was still trying to say there's no racism 😒 😑 🙄 they just had it swept under the rug now it's out in the open.

I never understand why people can't be more polite or just not discuss my appearance so loudly. Even some of them really think that I don't understand basic English and try to laugh at me.

One of the problems with classifying these behaviours is that it makes no distinction between a KKK member and someone who doesn’t know much about a culture and innocently believes the stereotypes.
Also I don’t understand this whole thing about narrow eyes. On average Asians do have less rounded eyes than westerners. It’s not a good or bad thing but it’s definitely a thing.
What’s important part is where in the heart does a comment come from. Is it joking, hatred, fear, ignorance.
God only knows where we’ll end up with this current global generation of sensitive souls!

It doesn't matter where in the heart it's coming from...if it's offensive, it's offensive...no one is sensitive for being offended when it comes to racist comments...If it's racist, it's racist...just because their "innocently" believing these racial stereotypes doesn't make it any less harmful to a specific group of people...you need to educate yourself on racism and realize that it's something you'll never understand...please stop leaving comments in communities where you're opinion isn't wanted...please and thank you!😊👍 and mean this in the most respectful way possible...i am not coming for you

@@graciie77 that’s the least offensive thing compared to what actual POCs face. you’re not compared to animals or racist caricatures. especially coming from the same ppl who created the concept of race. you don’t face racism on institutionalised and systemic level. so don’t even try to compare having no lips to actual harmful stereotypes.

@@tayswur1d452 Are you here to say your narrative? Did you even read the conversation you're trying to participate in? So many holes in your sentence that idk how you actually thought it's true.
From your comment I assume you're american or migrant in some white country you're not indegenous to.
First: race is not a concept created by white people. Race is concept appearing in mixed societies, so people differentiate between themselves and find stability in their looks(race). This concept has been in since Egypt when black african people wanted to migrate to the river Neil due to droughts in the area and mixed with the arabs(white people) in Ancient Egypt(3000BCE).
Second: Black people do not have shared experience. So do not white people. Black person's place in society is one in black african country and another in white European one. Same for white person. White people do not have any privilege, systematic or any other in majority of countries in the world. We're minority in many countries and the system there does not work for us. It's time to get outta your bubble because it's concerning how dense you can be. Also idk where the system works for people based on race and not on ethnicity, accept maybe USA.
Third: You have absolutely no right to say what is harmful and what not to someone. We're talking about pointing out facial features that are generally not considered beautifull and how harmful, rude and bad it can be. There are groups with thousands of people for e.g named "Lipless monkeys at it again" that strictly doesn't accept white people. Inside full of racist posts, caricatures and more. Whole tiktok accounts with millions of followers that explain how white people should be sterilised and how they're monkeys. Videos with millions of views of person teaching poc how to be racist well towards whites as they deserve(keep in mind that half of Europe was under slavery the same time black slavery was happening, idk what exactly we deserve then, maybe people are just uneducated and blinded by their racism). If you haven't noticed the internet is not a good place for white people and so is the world right now (famous black actor fakes a hate crime and accuses white people, ain't that a harmful stereotype that poc are trying to push?).
I live in my country that I'm indegenous to and majority. Of course I should be privileged, my ancestors worked to build it and endured through slavery for centuries just so I can be free today. The same way is privileged a Kenyan in Kenya and a Chinese in China. Black African countries are even one of the richest in minerals. They can be a world super power. My country that is poor as fuck is doing better than them right now. Also they were colonized, we were enslaved in our own land. And we're still doing better 🙂. Maybe it's the lack of ability or desire to get a better place in the world. Waiting someone to give it to you. If african countries were advanced(as they can be light years ahead of everyone) maybe you could've been doing better.
Don't come in conversations you have no place in. Find the right place to act victim.

It goes back to this idea of how offended you get means that maybe you’re insecure about it. Different cultures can have different traits (whether genetics or environmental). If someone doesn’t know or makes an assumption I really don’t think these are things to be offended by, just correct them politely if they want to listen.
The idea that I’d be offended if someone from east Asia thought I was Irish or French instead of British is laughable.

Its not the same thing though. Its saying that all asians look alike and they don't. Its actually very easy to tell the difference. You wouldn't understand so maybe just don't speak on a situation you haven't gone through. Racism shows in many forms and usually a lot of people ask those questions to be rude and to get under their skin. Questions like "why is your skin so dark" isnt an insecurity among black people. In fact most of us love dark skin its just rude to ask why we are born a certain way. We aren't insecure about our skin and we embrace it a lot.
