    FILM DESCRIPTION:
When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minnesota from a Hong Kong business trip, she attributes the malaise she feels to jet lag. However, two days later, Beth is dead, and doctors tell her shocked husband (Matt Damon) that they have no idea what killed her. Soon, many others start to exhibit the same symptoms, and a global pandemic explodes. Doctors try to contain the lethal microbe, but society begins to collapse as a blogger (Jude Law) fans the flames of paranoia.

This scene, specifically, is such a good scene, from the eerie weird music, to the realistic events which play out in the span of a few minutes...the director did an amazing job showing the process of contamination and how the virus spreads.

What’s absolutely terrifying about this is the people in the background being infected without you noticing unless you look for it. The flight attendant had contact when passing the drink. The airplane bathroom is contaminated especially the handle. The model was sitting next to other models and left her pictures in the table to be touched. The girlfriend worries about her boyfriend not looking well. The old woman and children in the elevator were in close contact with him coughing. The bus passengers touching the man that fainted. The food market being contaminated. It goes on and on.

What do you mean that you wouldn't notice unless you look for it? Someone would have to be pretty dumb not to notice as it's obvious the whole point of this scene is to show how the infected are spreading it to the people around them.

I was haunted by this movie from the first time I saw it in 2012. Never forgot it and when I first heard of a mysterious virus in China in December 2019, I immediately watched this again. Went out and bought masks, Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, and a bunch of other supplies most people weren’t even thinking about. Sometimes a Hollywood movie really can teach you something valuable.

only very naive people thought that (it's entire impossible). like, there's the over-the-top docu-drama called "End Day" (produced by the BBC, iirc) from the 2000's that presents 5 "doomsday" scenarios.
one of which is a global pandemic caused by a "Far East Influenza" (remember, that the Sars outbreak in Asia had only happened recently at that time).
I would agree that most people wouldn't have considered it to be very likely.

Pandemics and the social effects around them have long been studied. By 2015 I recall WHO CDC and other orgs basically yelling at govts to prep for another pandemic as changes in china and other places seemed to be going bad in terms of viruses. Respiratory illnesses have happened 3x before COVID after 2000. The mis- and disinformation social effects, like clockwork, happen every time. Social media was a superpower to them now though.
Govts though, as usual for most, but not all, didnt listen to a word said.

This is brilliant! In the future they will use this scene to showcase how stupid we were regarding the routes of infections. We were not smarter in 2011, or 2020 for that matter, regarding the issue of fomite vs. airborne infection than a doctor in the 17th century was. Imagine a pandemic fuelled by infected buttons and not by people heavily breathing aerosols into tiny spaces. It would be quite a herculean feat of nose picking on an international scale that would be involved :)
