If you never have, I'd recommend watching the music video for Just.
Not as a reaction video. Just for yourself.
It was how I discovered Radiohead back in 95 and is still my favourite ever video of theirs.

The Bends may sound like a standard rock album from the 90s, but it’s always feels like a ‘home’ for us radiohead fans whenever we feel tired of listening so much music. it has its own place in our heart.

Taufiq Hidayat speak for yourself man. Love Radiohead but the bends, while being a great 90’s rock album and a good foreshadow of what will makes Radiohead amazing in the future is still a little dated and simple at times. 7 or 8 out of 10 for me

Like eating a simple, yet perfectly spiced dish that your mother cooked for you as a child. The Bends (getting sick as a result of rising too fast) is a thematic metaphor (or mostly British humour) for Radiohead's early success with Creep. After Pablo Honey they really wanted to prove they were more than just a one-hit-wonder and strove to create a markedly complete work where a higher standard ran throughout the entire CD. (plus, in those days, if your second album wasn't any good your label would drop you and your career was basically over)
A few interesting things happened on/with The Bends: 1. Stanley Donwood (Dan Rickwood), a friend of Thom's from art school, was asked to provide the packaging designs. He and Thom (Thom's artistic pseudonym is Tchock, Dr. Tchock, or together they're called The White Chocolate Farm) have created all the artwork together ever since. (The special edition Amnesiac booklet actually won a Grammy).
    2. Radiohead recorded one song with a young producer called Nigel Godrich, and he's been their George Martin ever since. (He was also part of Thom's side band called Atoms for Peace)
    3. They started their website, which didn't amount to much at the time but later iterations contained lyrical ramblings and lots of insight into their thought/creative process.
    4. They developed more of the underground/cult following that they preferred. The mainstream still knew them for Creep, but The Bends really started building the foundation of a secure fan base. (of course, with OK Computer they basically just blew up everywhere)
    5. There were strong videos released for this album. High and Dry had two videos made, one for the US market and one for the UK. The US version doesn't really capture the feeling of the song but it's a pretty cool Tarantino-esque short film nonetheless. No one knows what the man at the end of the Just video says. Street Spirit is greyscale and impactful and the Fake Plastic Trees video really does the trick.
    6. At this point they didn't have much time in studio, because they were still (mostly) controlled by their label, but they did manage to record enough songs to create a few interesting B-Sides. It's always fun to see what does or doesn't make it on the album.
Yeah, so this was definitely a more innocent time for Radiohead, however a few important things happened that set the stage and gave them the confidence to realize their full creative potential in the future.

Fake Plastic Trees was probably the most famous song from this album. Certainly got a ton of play on MTV back in the heyday of MTV. I totally agree with you on your observations. It is still really radiohead but just like you noticed the level of complexity is taken down a notch. Now that you are really pretty well exposed it is very interesting to listen to the albums in order to see the evolution and the elements that stay constant and things that change. One major difference that I see with the bends is the lyrics are a bit more narrative and earnest in their "emotion" . I think as the albums go along they get better and better in expressing the emotion of the song through the musicality and instrumentation rather than the lyrics.
Nice Dream is fantastic with every member of the band having their part really fleshed out and integrated with the other parts which is more like the best of the later work. I think you are right it is the clearest harbinger of how they approach things later on. Of all their other songs though I feel like it is so much like There There. Very similar in its structure and its tone, strong guitar work at the end, a kind of thickness to the sound although also gentle and a bit lulling. What do you think?

The bends is widely believed to be a metaphor for the shock to the system from their sudden rise to fame. Additionally My Iron Lung is thought to make reference to Creep and how they can't get away from it due to its popularity.

I feel like The Bends is my favourite nostalgic Radiohead album as pretty much most of the songs of the album give me so much nostalgia for my childhood and growing up. Also, I’d love to hear you react to “The Fragile” by Nine Inch Nails if you can, it’s a bit of a long album but it is definitely well worth the listen with some songs just being a religious experience from how complex and deep they get.

Spot on! Nice Dream is a song about a dream Thom had. And it does sound give Ok Computer vibes pre Ok Computer. The title track was a song that they played during their tour for their debut album so it does have those Nirvana/Pixies vibe with some of Radiohead's own intricacies.

03:30 I had exactly the same "oh!!!" when I heard this song for the first time. The bends is my definite number 1 album of the all time. Helped me in a lot of tough situations in life. I was at three RH gigs in my life, my fav song is Trees. And they didn't play it at first two concerts. But right at the end of my last (for now) gig in Stockholm Thom went out and start to play this A chord. It was magnificent.

Someone once said that the first and last tracks of the first few Radiohead albums kind of served as teasers for the general sound of their next album. I think this is pretty true for maybe the first 4 albums. Pablo Honey had "You" and "Blow Out," which sound a lot like The Bends. The Bends had "Planet Telex" and "Street Spirit", which wouldn't sound out of place on OK Computer. Lastly, OK Computer had Airbag and The Tourist, which approached Kid A territory. I think the pattern kind of fell apart for Amnesiac, considering that the album's tracks were taken from the same long sessions in which Kid A was made. I'm kind of rambling at this point, but I thought some people might find it neat.

Glad you like Radiohead - but with them you never get 'straight up' rock! By their standards 'The Bends' is fairly conventional, but that doesn't mean it IS conventional. Sometimes when you think they are getting 'conventional' they go and then remind you that you're listening to a Radiohead album! I think this is why people loved them as they did rock, but a different kind of rock to everyone else; and put in weird sounds, and unsettling tones - creating an overall feel like no other band. It was one of the biggest selling albums in the UK, back in 1997. Still sounds top notch in 2020!!
