      The sound on the video is amazing, on the VHS version especially (the DVD version has a remaster that spoiled it a bit, I've heard - I haven't made a side by side comparison, I know the DVD version didn't blow my mind like the VHS did long ago but I just put that down to the passage of time until someone told me that about the remaster).

    Tom Yorke said in an interview once that he was struggling to record the vocals for some of the songs on The Bends because he didn't think you were able to sing falsetto or soft notes without it sounding... Too soft, wanting to be a rebellious punk influenced rock band.
    It just so happened that Jeff Buckley was touring London and their producer took Tom to one of Jeff's shows and after the gig he went back to the studio with his producer and laid down the vocals to Fake Plastic Trees in only three takes. After he played back the song he was in tears because he only then realised what he and the band had the potential to be... Great Story!!!

    Black Star I find really cool because of how
    1) the intro riff is in 6/4 time signature
    2) there’s another 3rd verse in the song rather than a bridge section, and it just has drums and bass with the guitar omitted for most of it
    3) the chorus is really fun to sing along to

    • @stillaliveplus1forme

      Yet it has a lot to compete with. The first time I heard the bends the 4 songs I thought were the worst were Bones, Nice Dream, Black Star and Sulk and despite loving them all now I would still consider them the low point of the album. (But to me it is a perfect album so the low points are very high above other bands)
      PT is probably the most unique sounding radiohead song ever with nothing of theirs sounding like it and it has very good hooks and melodies so it stands out.
      The bends stands out for being a great 90s rock anthem that has lasting lyrical power.
      High and dry stands out as being 1 of radioheads tightest and most hook/ pop friendly sounding songs making it extremely pleasing like no suprises and also stand out.
      Fake Plastic trees stands out for being 1 of the best rock anthems ever written alongside Creep this is Radioheads closest to just being a normal rock band who wrote great songs an instant classic which makes it stand out.
      Just stands out because of it's insane chord progressions.
      My iron lung stands out for its drastic changes between the heavier and lighter parts with an aloe very unique guitsr opening.
      Bullet proof stands out as being the most melancholy and dream like track on the album (yes even more than nice dream) aswell as it's use of layering sonically.
      Street Spirit stands out as being 1 of the greatest and most haunting ballads ever released with an also iconic guitar riff.
      End of the day sulk, blackstar, bones and nice dream all just sound like 90s songs that almost any band could have written and have mostly not aged aswell because of that. Blackstar deffinetely stands high above the others and had definitely grown on me the most over the years but it still just sounds like some 90s song that could of had a better hook for the chorus.

    • @Tocaraca
      @Tocaraca 5 лет назад +4

      stillaliveplus1forme
      I totally disagree about (Nice Dream), it doesn’t sound that generic, having the unexpected changeup to brutal guitar work towards the end.
      I guess you’re right about Bones, Black Star, and Sulk though. Bones has a killer bassline and guitar layering and is in a 14/4 time signature though, and is incredibly short and sweet, the shortest on the album. Black Star has a different structure. Sulk has great bass and a key change and some of Thom’s highest notes. They all have something to offer. I love The Bends so much as an album

      Yes they were definitely big Pixies fans, and also REM. Ed's pull-off Rickenbacker part on Bulletproof sounds like it could be Peter Buck playing it. Jonny was also a HUGE Magazine fan (which never got very big here in the US). In fact when guitarist John McGeoch died they asked Jonny to fill in for the 2012 reunion show, but he felt overwhelmed and sadly declined.

  • @libelle156
    @libelle156 5 лет назад +20

    It's really interesting that the songs you've immediately grown attached to over all your reactions are also the ones that Radiohead keep consistently on their setlists. We don't see them making setlists based on popularity, or demand, but definitely on the songs they still feel are worth playing. You seem to be able to identify that hidden quality that makes those tracks really stand out.
    It's also so strange to see your point of view of the Bends as something new rather than something REALLY old. It's been a guitar classic for two decades. I like that you've acknowledged the influence it clearly had on Coldplay and Muse (listen to b-side The Trickster!) without falling into tired "they ripped Radiohead off" dismissal. I never thought it was fair that those two bands were (and still are) direct contemporaries of the band that came before them - kind of like going to work with your dad or something. What a shadow to operate under. Radiohead has had a long career and it's frankly nuts that they are still outputting relevant and interesting material.
    Watching you hear it like it's fresh music is such a turnabout and totally makes me re-evaluate some of those old songs.
    Also, please look up the isolated bass for My Iron Lung. Thank me later.

    Glad you liked and agreed with your assessments for the most part. Since you're a guitar player, on Just and My Iron Lung Jonny uses a Digitech Whammy pedal. On Just it's for the insanely high notes of the ascending scale in the intro to the solo that kind of warble, and on My Iron Lung he uses the "Plus octave" setting to give the electric 12-string sound on the intro and verses. Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit I think are the best but there are others that are really good too. There are definitely some great songs here, although I agree that since that have other albums that are just masterpieces that this ranks in the middle of their discography. Says something about them that an album this good is 'in the middle' for them. Also, do yourself a favor and check out 2 B-sides from The Bends sessions - they are as good as anything on the album, but you can see that they didn't 'fit' the album as well. The first is 'Bishop's Robes' and the second is 'Talk Show Host'.
    Thanks
    Peace from SF

    You mentioned (during My Iron Lung) that you see how Muse were influenced by Radiohead (in Showbiz) and just, not-at-all surprisingly enough, I've learnt that John Leckie who produced The Bends also produced Showbiz (and Origin of Symmetry).
    I like the story that Leckie took Radiohead on a concert when working on The Bends and I guess they were all very happy about their collaboration.
    By the way, thank you for your reactions. I am slowly revisiting Radiohead in full and currently listening to The Bends. Kid A and Amnesiac are up next!

    And this is why I love watching reaction videos. Living vicariously through someone experiencing one of my favorite albums for the first time is powerful; especially when that someone knows their stuff. I loved this album when it came out and I have to totally agree with you about how 90's it is; though it was so much more than that when it came out, especially considering the music of it's time. I also can distinguish the formative themes and musicianship that was a prelude to OK Computer, that I just attributed as being Radiohead at the time. Finally, I also agree that Street Spirit is my favorite song off the album: so haunting and ethereal and beautiful and potent. You should really seek out their video of Street Spirit- so beautiful and haunting; not only one my favorite Radiohead videos; one of my favorite videos of all time.
