    “Cut the kids in half” = divorce

    • @Mrfuzzypants26
      @Mrfuzzypants26 5 лет назад +34

      I don't doubt the lyric could be referring to that but it also seems to be a reference to a biblical story about 2 women claiming motherhood over a child and the king suggests cutting the child in half so they can share it.

    • @emmamorris6577
      @emmamorris6577 5 лет назад +17

      yup, iirc the where song in about divorce and the lyrics are meant to be snapshots of parents arguing, hence "you can keep the furniture" and "where'd you park the car"
      also surprised Dakota didn't notice these lyrics on the Kid A version, maybe it's just easier to hear Thom's voice on the Amnesiac version? I still prefer the Kid A version anyhow, although I prefer Amnesiac as an album

    Forgot one thing: did you know that Exit Music and Life In A Glasshouse were originally one song? One of the recently leaked (and then officially released by Radiohead themselves on their Bandcamp account for 18 days) Minidisks that featured a healthy amount of the actual OK Computer sessions (the very first one) has a song called Poison on it, which is basically Exit Music with different lyrics and a section of Life In a Glasshouse after a verse.

    So, The King Of Limbs is very experimental and electronic, but in a completely different way than something like Kid A or Amnesiac. I would describe it as being really funky and playful. It is consistently ranked as one of their least-sad records, with A Moon Shaped Pool being the saddest, of course. It took me a while to get into it though. You should watch the live basement version only after having heard the studio versions of the songs. It will definitely give you an appreciation and better understanding for what they were going for with that record.

    You touched on something I appreciate a lot about “Like Spinning Plates”. That song could have easily just been a big gimmick-experiment, and yet in true Radiohead fashion, they clearly put a lot of thought and care into the real meat of the song and to make it emotionally resonant and substantive. No matter how brainy they get, they never forget about the heart. Very rare for a band.

It's one of those albums that a lot of people I've played it too have really hated. It's a beautiful masterpiece to the people who love it but it might be a bit too lo-fi and strange for people who haven't grown up listening to similarly obscure and eccentric stuff. I feel like it’s a misconception to call The King of Limbs an electronic album, because even tho it uses electronics, it isn’t a Kid A. Instead, I think of it as an album that heavily uses live recorded loops to build the songs up. And in my honest opinion, I like it over The Bends for sure and maybe Hail to the Thief on some days.
    Also no one can deny the last 4 tracks on the King of Limbs are absolutely incredible, and gotta love Bloom.

    TKOL is a forgotten gem.
    It's a very good album, it's so consistent and pure, yeah the electronics might sound repetitive at first but I guarantee there's like a "spirituality" to them, they're gentle and hypnotizing, almost sensual. I think their live versions are even better, but the studio album has more of that dazing feeling, I think they purposefully went with a more synthetic sound to accentuate it.

  • @officialpierluk
    @officialpierluk 5 лет назад +2

    Hey I hope you read my comment cos I want to answer your question about King of Limbs. I think this album is quite underrated probably for many different reasons, but the concept behind the music of this album was to jam in the studio and then play with these recorded jams to make songs out of loops and write melodies over them. One of the most interesting thing about these songs is that they are driven by complex weird rhythm sections, most of the time with two or three drums at the same time. The bigest downside for me is that yes the idea is cool, but after a while it becomes really repetitive..
    But after the album came out, they also did another live in the basement session for it, and it's cool how these songs have so much more energy live, so I think you might enjoy the basement session of this album more, like a lot of people. It worth a listen for sure, at least for the songs Bloom and Codex, among others :).. And I agree with others that to trully enjoy the live session, you should hear the album first, so you know the process behind those songs
    cheers :), can't wait for your ranking of their albums and keep up the good work, your original songs are really good to :)

    The King of Limbs is an amazing album. I think a lot of people don’t appreciate it as much because of the heavy electronics and loopy feel. But the songs are undeniable, the live from the basement session proves that. Bloom is one of the most masterfully crafted songs I have ever heard, little by little is one of their most interesting songs on any album, feral has a ridiculous groove as well as lotus flower. Finally Codex and Give Up The Ghost are fantastically beautiful and impactful. Not my favourite Radiohead album but it’s still amazing.

    To be honest, I really enjoy Tkol and its album version. In my opinion it REALLY dont deserves the hate it gets because once you get into it a little bit its such a great experience, you are in this groovy world of electronic sounds and dreamy melodies of thom. It is one of my favorite radiohead albums. I LOVE lotus flower, everything in this song just fits so perfect, Codex is a beautifully sad piano ballad and bloom is such an orchestral overwhelming experience. However I really recomend to anyone reading this to eventually just take 40 minutes of time, close your eyes and listen to the king of limbs once again and maybe then you will see what I mean :)

    Alright here's my comment reaction...
    Knives Out - okay so the video for this one might be my favourite music video of all time. Watch it and think about how it was filmed. Incredible. Also interesting how the riffs and ideas in this follow on from things like Paranoid Android. Yeah you definitely can lose yourself in that one.
    Morning Bell/Amnesiac - Oh this is gonna be weird. Yep, you're making a weird face. I think this version may have been the earlier one timeline-wise which is interesting.
    Dollars and Cents - this one took years for me to like. Saw it live in 2008 and blew my mind. Cant believe I slept on how good that ending is. Ebbing and flowing! Great way to describe the whole album actually.
    I love the perpetually confused look on your face. So great.
    Oh jeez Hunting Bears. Long build up for a 2 minute song! Ahaha!
    Like Spinning Plates. Okay this one is gonna freak you out for sure. And everyone will be demanding you hear the live version! Oh I'm so excited waiting to see you react to Thom's backward vocals kicking in. YES. NOT DISAPPOINTED. People have reversed it - on RUclips. I think Thom intentionally messed up a few of the sounds to really make the backwardsness stand out. There's a great page on the Citizen Insane website about this.
    And the creepy jazzy closer! Here we go. Ahaha, this is funny to watch you hear. Is someone listening in?
    I think everyone takes a long time to really digest Kid A and Amnesiac. I'd love to see you come back to these in like a year. Both of them totally changed the way I hear music.
    Re: King of Limbs. It's electronic in its production. The actual sounds on the album are all organic - the band went out of their way to find ways to make typically electronic sounding things with real instruments, and then looped/treated/sampled that. It's an album that was heavily about the process, and the songwriting took a backseat. It's beautiful, weird, very obtuse and a lot like Amnesiac in its experimentation.

    Like Spinning Plates was constructed from components of another song, I Will, which the band had tried to record in the same sessions. Unsatisfied with the results, which Thom Yorke described as "dodgy Kraftwerk", the band reversed the recording and used it to create a new track. Yorke said:
    "We'd turned the tape around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody."
    Yorke was recorded singing the melody backwards; this recording was in turn reversed to create "backwards-sounding" vocals. I Will was later released in a different arrangement on Radiohead's subsequent album Hail To the Thief (2003).

    While Like Spinning Plates is absolutely beautiful and up there with the very best of Radiohead, I do feel like people over-hype the novelty/innovative aspect of the reversed arrangement a little bit. The Beatles were doing that shit back in the 60's on songs like Tomorrow Never Knows and Strawberry Fields Forever (though definitely not with such a large element of the instrumentation being reversed). Another great song that everyone is completely sleeping on that employs the technique of having the majority of the arrangement being reversed and that came out just a few years before Amnesiac is Neely O'hara by Bright Eyes. Obviously much more rough-around-the-edges and lo-fi than Radiohead but a really interesting and emotional piece of music.
    Not taking anything away from Spinning Plates though. It is hauntingly wonderful and Thom's approach of learning the vocal melody in reverse definitely takes things a step further experimentation wise.
    Anyone else know any other great songs that employ this technique? I think My Bloody Valentine might have used it a bit as well?
