Sam Darnold reportedly becomes ‘place holder’ for Minnesota Vikings | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc - Спорт
Kirk will never let his wife talk to florios ever again
Prolly his last contract, so wont matter
Why is she even talking to him to begin with?
@@artdent6899 why not?
Chris called kwesi “KWEDEFFI” 😂
Its short for Kwesi 😅
Kweefy
I see no difference
When Florio talks about Vikings franchise QBs he never seems to remember Tommy Krammer. Krammer was the unquestioned starting QB for eight straight seasons from 1979-1986.
Two minute Tommy, my favorite vikings qb ever. When he put the packer urinal in his house, he became a viking legend forever.
Tommy Kramer the Miracle at The Met👍
Whenever I hear Tommy Kramer I envision him been crushed by Jack Hamm at the Old Metropolitan Stadium
Why don't you spell Kramers name correctly
Florio, you KNOW HOW THIS PLAYS OUT....JJ LEAVES, DARNOLD SUX, AND GOING AFTER MCCARTHY IS A HUGE FLOP....ANOTHER 5 BAD SEASONS!!!!!!!!!!!
How many times will Florio name drop Julie Cousins about that convo she had with his wife. Geez we get it, enough already
You're a Colts fan. You have bigger problems to worry about than Florio name dropping! 😂
Well aren't you a fragile little hothouse orchid
😂😂 bruh cmon
I don’t know what it is,
But whenever I see a thumbnail of Florio I immediately feel like Rob Riggle’s character in Step Brothers
POW
..POW POW
It was Tom Pelissero that linked Sam Darnold to Minnesota for those wondering. Dude called that a month ago.
The man's got connections, that's for sure.
I'm cool with Darnold but PLEASE draft a franchise QB
Easier said than done
@@tavius88 true. But it's time to try again.
Florio wondering why Minnesota didn’t call for Russel Wilson just shows how clueless he is when it comes to actual football. I knew how Simms would respond, I knew the answer, and I sure as hell don’t do this for a living
Florio is looking at it from the viewpoint that Wilson's contract is literally the cheapest veteran contract you can get, which allows for other players to get signed (and extend Jefferson). But I agree with Simms that it's wiser to go with a younger guy who still could have a decade of good football ahead, assuming Darnold finally blossoms.
Florio isn't clueless. You're just not allowing yourself to see all aspects of a player's signing.
Saving $9M wouldn't be worth the freak show that would come with Wilson. Darnold has the possibility of being a lower tier starter, a bridge, or a capable back up. I don't see Wilson being either of the last two even if he might have a higher ceiling (which is debatable at this point).
We welcome him and he gets a shot just like everyone who comes to the Vikings. Annoying comments and based on nonsense. He'll determine if he becomes a place holder or not. He needs to focus from this point on about what he will do to prepare physically. The injuries up to this point stopped him from completing a season and/or playing to his true potential. Can't play for the Vikings if you fumble and throw interceptions so he needs to figure it out. I've rarely seen him play since the Rose Bowl. I'm rooting for Sam
This is the perfect situation to see if Darnold has what it takes. The Jets and Panthers are dumpster fires on offense. No QBs would excel in those environments. Didn't look too bad the limited playing time he had with the 9ers. Rooting for him big time.
It isn’t a contingency plan, the Vikings have been planning this for a year. So excited they are finally going after their rookie QB. Darnold is the best fit for KOC’s offense and had horrible opportunities previously until SF. The Vikings have been making great moves to build full team.
Dude, don't spill that Kwesi Kool-Aid your chugging there.
Someone said that Darnold chose to go to SF last year to "rehab himself" because he had been on some terrible teams with bad coaching staffs. Hopefully that pays off.
What the hell are you inhaling?
Mike is getting his USC QB just not the one he wanted
CUT IT OUT!
haha Florio deserves Darnold
He got one the he deserves 😂
It's fascinating watching these 2 guys talk themselves into liking a guy who has up untill thus point been 🗑as a starting QB
It's his shot, now or never for Sam. I guess we will see how much he wants it. Geno 2.0 maybe?
As a Vikings fan, what else is he supposed to do? Just the nature of being a fan
Fair-ish, but Jets/Panthers are pros at sucking on their own terms. Good luck to Sam though, he's been a pro through it all and I hope that pays off at some point.
I've never seen him with a good coach, good offensive line and throwing to one of the best receiving corps in the league before, have you? I have only seen him surrounded by trash.
It's fascinating to reading comments like yours that prove your inability to do proper research or use common sense.
Simms: Everyone already the league was talking about Darnold to Minnesota.
Simms and Florio: Didn’t report any of this prior to the announcement that Darnold signed with Minnesota.
I'd say Darnold finally has a chance at a Baker Mayfield redemption arc. If he can't succeed in Minnesota with those receivers and what appears to be a good HC, he isn't going to succeed anywhere. And if he turns out to be good, the Vikings can look for other talent in next year's draft. I think it's a great gamble that could have a nice upside.
I am a little surprised that Darnold got over twice what Mayfield got for his redemption year. Both did about the same with the Panthers (lousy just like the QBs before them and the QBs after them). Mayfield had that end of season performance with the Rams. All Darnold did was sit behind Purdy for a year. Mayfield also had more success with his first team than Darnold (of course the Browns were a playoff team and the Jets were a basket case with back up QBs).
Darnold had 3 games with a healthy McCaffrey he averaged 300 yds passing , he wad never given a supporting cast @exhaustguy
If darnold's your best option you're screwed
@@bigfootwalker5399 Why?
@@exhaustguyinflation
The Vikings couldn't afford Kirk and still have the rest of the team around him. Darnold will be a good bridge and now go out and get "the guy" for the future. SKOL Vikes!
I think Darnold could have a Goff like turnaround in Minn. I wouldn't reach for a QB this season before seeing what O'Connell can do with him.
@luke7834 Goff went to a superbowl on LA he was never bad
I never said anything about anybody being bad, but actually Goff was historically bad in his rookie season, when the team around him was terrible, just like Darnold. Enter McVay, and Todd Gurley (and in the playoffs CJ Anderson) got them to the Superbowl and McVay jettisoned him as a makeweight in the Stafford trade because he was not good enough. I don't believe Sam Darnold is bad, in fact his first few games for the Panthers were promising. Then CMC and some other offensive players got injured and he was asked to do too much with too little. He's in a much better situation in Minnesota.@@SunShine-xc6dh
Good luck Sam. This is your best shot and as a Viking homer I'm rooting for you.
NBC should show CFL May thru August 2024.
Sam has a rocket for an arm and he’s a pretty good athlete. With KOC as his coach, he’s got a great opportunity to realize his potential.
Lol
He was a 3rd overall draft pick…so he clearly has physical talents. I am more concerned we are going to lose a boatload of picks to move up this year. And probably pick JJ M who, a month ago, was speculated to go late first early second round.
Shanahan in San Francisco is a pretty good coach too... we can only hope, probably the best weapons he ever had
I wouldn't say he has a rocket but he has a good live arm. People also don't remember that he was a converted LB his senior year of high school and only played 1 1/2 seasons at USC. Just 2 1/2 years of playing QB and he gets thrust into the NFL at age 20 playing for Adam Gase. A 20 year old rookie QB starting out with no OL, no run game, subpar WR's, (Robbie was only decent), a bad defense, and Adam Gase as their HC. No one would've shined there. Rhule in Carolina was just as bad. Finally in a good place to do some damage in this league.
@@MoMoMyPup10 people think this guy is in his 30’s… he’s 26. He’s going to learn more from KOC then he’s ever learned in his life. I think Darnold is going to play shockingly well and improve over the season
I like Sam with the offense
I think Sam Darnold is finally in a pretty good position. I think he’s waited his whole short career for this opportunity. He just might surprise the whole league. I do think the Vikings draft a quarterback in the first round. Either at #11 or trading up into the end of the first round. I’m quite optimistic.
I like the move for Atlanta, they won 7 games with Ridder and Heinecke. I have to believe they'll be better the next couple of years. I don't see them contending for a Super Bowl, but they can get a home playoff game, and who knows what happens. I like Darnold for Minnesota, but I wonder what Justin Jefferson thinks about their future. They might be rebuilding the next few years.
Rebuilding around great tackles, 1 generational WR, 1 young solid WR, and a top TE. This isn’t a panthers or bears rebuild.
curious....can't they use their Franchise Tag on JJ after this next season?
@samkersten9539 If you don't have a franchise qb or an elite defense, you're rebuilding. Every team has some nice pieces, with the exception of a few. I'm just saying it might be worth it for Minnesota to explore a trade as opposed to a qb type extension. That's the type of move that can expedite a rebuild and put them in a position to get a nice haul in return. It's always tough because he's a great player. I'm not saying they should or shouldn't do it, but they should seriously think about it if the price is right. Look at Cincy, they had Chase, Higgins, Mixon, Boyd and a decent defense, but aren't even a playoff team without Joe Burrow.
@@oel734 Yeah, they can tag him. I'm not sure if he would play on the tag, but they can always use it on him.
Vikings have been rebuilding since KOC & Kwesi came to MN. They got rid of aging players with large contracts and still managed to have two decent seasons, the only one left of the old guard is Harrison Smith. This team went from bottom of the league in cap space to possibly over a $100 million available next year. Sam Darnold is okay but move up for QB. Continue building the defense and offensive line.
People never talk about how he was running Peyton Mannings offense in NY. Check downs all over the place. That’s super hard for ANYONE not to mention a 19 year old rookie. Accompany that with Adam Gase. He’s a really talented QB. He played well on another garbage team in the Panthers once he finally got a QB friendly OC to close out the season. He took a pay cut to learn the game in SF. A lot of Minnesota fans are sleeping on him.
I say draft a top lineman for both sides of the ball in the first round, that's what we need, Darnold can be coached to be way better then what he has shown.
Darnold has been through nearly the same amount of shitshows as Baker. Maybe it’s his time
It IS his time.
But is it to shine?
Or is it to prove his detractors correct?
We're gonna find out one way or the other this upcoming season.
Welcome Sam Darnold to the Minnesota Vikings and Welcome Jones.. to a very high powered offense
Let’s go Sam Darnold !!! 😎
TRADE JJ for 2 number ones. Use those combined with our #1 this yr and next yr to trade up to get Harrison Jr and Jayden Daniels.
You are set for 5 years of two awesome receivers and a franchise QB for cheap!!!
Do it now!
It's a one year deal, so it makes me think they still draft a QB and JJ might be in talks as a trade resource as well. Idk, the best thing the Vikings have is their defense, a lot of new and younger faces for those hungry to prove people wrong.
Sam the Man! Let’s go 🎉
I used to watch I think “Soul and Science” with Trent Dilfer. Great show. He used real science to gauge at least QB measurables. Anyways Trent’s favorite stat is Load-to-Arrival (LTA) which is basically: how long does it take for a ball to be delivered from a QB when he starts his throwing motion until it hits the receiver’s hands, usually on a set route, like a quick out. The receiver just stood there removing that variable, e.g. running. But you can calculate LTA by adding LTR and add the simple math equation using ball speed and distance, up to say 40 yards. I did it once for comparisons. But Trent also has a Load-to-Release (LTR) which is just how many milliseconds for a QB to go through his throwing motion. Tua’s LTR is just over 0.3 as an example. Marino was about the same. But Darnold’s ball speed from memory was mid-50s tops - Josh Allen is 62 but 59 running to his left, which is insanely good! - which shows the difference. I mean, Josh does have a killer arm but he was four MPH faster than Darnold where Darnold was in the pocket and Josh was making the most difficult throw a QB can expect to make. And I believe Sam’s LTR was over 0.4 which is pretty bad for an NFL QB., maybe 0.44 from memory. But all these numbers matter because NFL corners are really good now and, if a QB has a lousy arm, he has to throw much earlier to a spot to avoid a pick. In my opinion Darnold doesn’t have the basic throwing ability to play NFL football, not even really as backup. And it’s probably why he’s been on several teams now as their coaches end up having buyer’s remorse.
That's all well and good, but it's all mental. If you can process fast, read the d, and make the correct read, you'll be a great qb.
Not sure what Simms is looking at. Darnold wasn't even willing to throw at the 2018 combine and Soul and Science timed his passing velocity at 52 MPH, which is well below the 55 MPH average and way below Cousins 59 MPH at the 2012 Combine. His passes have no velocity on them, he can't drive the football outside of the numbers and has to put air under his passes, when he throws out routes over 10-15 yards. Contrast that with Cousins, whose arm has gotten even stronger since entering the league. Simms needs to go back and watch the pass that Cousins threw in overtime, against the Bills in 2022, on an out route that traveled 23 yards on a frozen rope, with him falling backwards and not being able to step into the throw. It's a throw that maybe two other quarterbacks in the league (Mahomes and Allen), have both the arm strength and accuracy to complete. Simms keeps pushing this bizarre narrative, that Cousins doesn't have a strong arm and it's provably false.
Good job Chris
Haha Mike is genuinely so depressed about the Vikings QB situation - never heard him so flat and resigned before
He should be excited for Flores reloading. Vikings will draft a rookie and rely on KOC to develop him.
Sam Darnold should have the most positive motivation of his career. Good team, QB friendly coaches and system, good skill players. If Darnold plays better than expected, then all the news is good. He could start for a longer time, or become a more valuable backup. Vikings will be perfectly willing to sit their rookie for a year or longer if Darnold plays really well.
I thought the vikes were planning on a superbowl run when they signed darnold thanks clearing up this florio
I think KOC can help this kid unlock his potential
Vikings have never had but 3 franchise Quarterbacks Fran the man Tommy Kramer and dante culpepper
I was a huge Kirk fan since Washington but I am not a falcons fan
The Cousins experience didn't work for the Vikings, one playoff win in six season. Darnold has a one year contract, he is bridge QB and that is all. The Vikings are actually doing a real rebuild rather than tinkering and giving huge contracts to the same two or three guys with no playoff results. The Vikings are following more of the same plan that the Lions and the Packers have done and both those teams rebuilt and made the playoffs in 2023. I am excited to see what the next couple of seasons bring for the Vikings.
Told my brother a vikings fan sam was coming during the season, then draft off his record or he floats
You know, I didn't realize Randy Moss was such a great player until AFTER he left the Vikings. Just kidding; I know you people don't the cold parts of the midwest. It's not always so bad and we do have heated blankets.
Kwedeffi lmaooo
Falcons got a definite upgrade @qb position while Vikes got a downgrade
He is probably better than the 4th or 5th QB picked, but he is a 60% thrower, I expect him to start out looking good. Unless you can get one of your top 3 QBs dropping or trading up, I would go with Darnold and maybe get a better pick next year. I think there are 0 cases of someone with over 4 seasons of starts, below 80 rating, 60% thrower, below 500, who has gotten good enough to get the Contract Cousins just got. He could flash in the pan this year and get some fool to give him a Mayfield contract, who has more starts, 62% thrower, almost 500 football with a near 90 rating. Mayfield is on the edge and there is a lot of distance between the 2 players.
Darnold was clearly better than baker in the same situation on the Panthers
He took a team that basically threw in the towel for the season, went 4-2 and almost dragged that carcass into the Playoffs. He's CLEARLY a better QB than Baker was on the Panthers. It's all about where you land as an NFL QB. @@5david
Sam Darnold is a mix of Kirk Cousins and Josh Allen... good in the pocket but can run too... like for a 40 yard Touch Down! As a die hard Viking supporter l liked Kirk Cousins... but last year was the year he was going to take us deep in the payoffs but he got injured and his injury will have an affect on his mobility... so now I would prefer Darnold who is younger and can both throw and run!
Sam Darnold to me, being just 26 (going on 27) is a free NFL Draft pick that just happens to be NFL ready with plenty of experience so there won't be any growing pains.
I hope Sam excels here to the point where he remains the Starter.
Simms was short sighted thinking they could "build" around kirk with no cap and being low in the draft
Chris was not a Darnald fan at all coming out. That was when he was still at bleacher report but he was Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield guy.
You're right but I think over time and seeing what Sam has gone through (all the BS with the Jets and Panthers) made him a fan of his in rooting for him to turn things around since he (Sam) WAS dealt a very poor hand for the first 6 years of his NFL career.
I don't wanna believe the Vikings will enter season having Sam as their starter.
You don' t need to believe anything.

They won 7 games with Ridder and Heinecke, gotta believe they'll be better the next few years, probably not contending for a Super Bowl, but still better than they were. Meanwhile the Vikings, 😬.

I lost all respect for Florio when he trashed Cousins for the last 4 years. He was wrong about everything on Cousins.
I’d argue Darnold’s most memorable moment was throwing a pick 6 on his first ever NFL pass attempt. Paying that guy more than 50k a year is an overpay
Well thank god you don’t make any major decisions for NFL teams 😂
Have you looked at the other bridge QB contracts? 😂

@@johnchedsey1306i think it applies in this instance
They are going to draft one of the top-5 guys. Will they hit on it?? Who the hell knows. But it's WAY past time to take that swing. Whether Darnold succeeds or not means nothing.
I actually like Nick Mullens more than Darnold. Now, neither guy is a starter but at least Mullens has a good release and decent arm. I think that Mullens maybe has a poor TD-2-INT ratio - 1 although I haven’t looked in two years? - but part of Mullens problem is lack of consistency. Now Darnold has played for what? Four teams too so Sam has been booted around too. But if I were a coach and I had to choose between Mullens and Darnold, outside of resigning on the spot, I’d begrudgingly take Mullens. Mullens makes mistakes but he kind of makes up for it with sone decent plays. I mean, I’m 60 with RA and I’m pretty sure I can still throw harder than Darnold. (In my twenties I could throw a true NFL ball from the 50 to the back of the end zone - out the back if I ate my Wheaties - so I had a decent arm. But my release was really good, way better than either.). (I just looked at both guys. Each is just better than one on a TD-2-INT ratio. Rodgers is what? 4? Brady was 3. Good is 2. 1 is, “The Iowa Barnstormers called. They want to try you out.”)
Thank you for that wall-of-text. I'll send you my Optometrist bill.
So you're a Mullens booster, I see.
You know....if they had the same attitude as you in regards to him, they wouldn't have signed Sam Darnold.
And umm...I tend to trust actual Football people more than some randos on the internet. Just throwing that out there.
Florio can’t be this naive. There was zero chance the Vikings were gonna do business with Russ and vise versa. This is a full on youth movement. The Vikings are looking for a long term answer at QB, not another retread. Darnold is a placeholder and he likely knows it. The Vikings are clearly looking to draft their future at the position. Hard to see Russ wanting to play placeholder, given his career resume. He thinks he’s got more in the tank.
Unless KOC is some sort of quarterback development savant, Darnold will remain as a career backup; much like Marcus Mariotta. Serviceable when called upon. He won't lose games for you, but he won't be the guy to lead a team to the promised land. The only way this makes sense is if the Vikings trade up to the 3 spot and take Drake Maye or the 5 spot and take JJ McCarthy. Anything less than that is a give up slide.
"Unless KOC is some sort of quarterback development savant"

No way the Vikings just placehold with Darnold when they have Jefferson and Addison. Even if they can land one of the top six QBs in this draft, there's no way they can afford to waste the last year of Jefferson's rookie contract.
