Nice job ! Please don’t take this as criticism as I only offer this advice to try and be helpful. I would suggest you encase your wire that runs from the rear of the truck, underneath the frame, in a wire loom. It won’t do much to protect from moisture but it will add a buffer from the wire rubbing over time from vibration and hopefully save it from possibly shorting out. The second suggestion is the rubber plug or grommet under the doors floor plate that you brought the wire through and into the cab. I didn’t notice you making a slit in it before reinstalling. I would definitely make a slit for the wire to run through otherwise you will have constant pressure against the sharp opening and most likely end up shorting your system out pretty quick. Just trying to save you from having to replace the setup due to a short in the future. Ingenious idea installing the monitor in the sunglass compartment ! Nice, clean install. Very impressed.

Thanks man! This video helped me with the running of the wire for my truck. I used a more detailed video by someone else who showed how to tap into reverse light, which was better for someone like me who is a total amateur at this. But your wire running instruction was great!

Thanks for the tip about going through the gasket at the door. 2 suggestions / words of advice though. 1) anytime you have a wire going through a metal hole you want a gasket / grommet there to protect the wire from being nicked by the metal. Over time the vibrations from your truck are going to cut that wire where it is going through your floor. 2) the a pillar has a curtain airbag in it. The way you routed the wire is NOT safe. If you completely remove the pillar there is a location specifically meant for wire routing up that pillar that avoids the airbag.

That monitor location is brilliant. I went with a new stereo with a display but only because I never thought of this. lol
I installed this camera (now $39) in my F150 today.. I set it up to get power from the cigarette lighter. That means that I have some coiled wire under the front seat. I used heat shrink tubing on the power lines (red/black) because I didn't like the red color. Setup works fine. I chose the setup because I thought it would be useful to use while driving, but it really isn't. Because it is wide angle, cars a car length away look tiny on the screen. Because of that, connecting it so it gets power from the backup lamp is probably the better choice. It would reduce the clutter of wires in the cab to just one wire going to the monitor with the excess looped an tie-wrapped in the back near the bumper. I purchased 20 ft of 3/8 in. loom cable at AutoZone to protect the wire under the truck and tie-wrapped it to existing cables and the frame and up through a grommet into the cab of the truck.

Thanks CluEngineer, your most important innovation was to use the free red wire to be the power line, starting at the back up light connection, for the video screen as well as the camera. This shortcut is not covered in the two kits that I installed. In fact, the instructions are for a separate power source up front for the video. They recommended a cigarette lighter or using a fuse panel circuit. My second install, I had no vehicle manual and the fuse locations were not identified. So which one did I pick? The one that I didn't know was on all the time and we soon experienced battery failure. Since the camera was never on, the screen was never on, so no indication that power was being used. Again, neither one of the instructions that came with two kits even acknowledged the free red wire dangling from the coaxial black jacket at both ends.

I want to put a front camera or sensors on front of my truck cause I live in the city for right now and parking is tight. However, I have a cattle guard so any ideas? Best video I've seen on installing an F150 Backup Camera. Biggest issue I needed help with was running the wire. Probably wont go through the trouble of hiding the screen, but nicely done.

I had just finished installing one of these unit yesterday one my SUV but why the rear view mirror is so dark when the camera not is use? Do you have to connect the a red wires coming out video concerto a power source? My unit wires also got one of these red wire but I did not connect it to any power sources and it still function, so it this correct hookup?
If you have not found out yet, the red wire is for a head unit. It connects so as to engage when reverse gear is selected. So as not to be on all the time...
Make sure to mute the volume before trying to watch...
The ideal music would be Sabre Dance, ...... ;-)
Any updates on this? Is the camera still dry (not fogged)? Screen still working?
Everything is still intact. Including my installation and the product. Keep in mind I am also in Colorado going skiing with freezing and snowy temperatures.
Best video of how NOT to wire your rear view camera. Those wires are not meant to withstand the weather outside. But i do like his attitude...

I am installing a wireless back up cam on my 2013 f150, but I still need power in the cab to power the monitor. Would I be able to splice into the plug doing nothing under the sunglass holder for that? Would cutting off the fat 12v plug switch I assume has a fuse in it give me problems?
I am not sure what plug you are referring to. But the power that draws from the monitor is pretty small. I wouldn't worry about a fuse burning out.

Could of just got the one that replaces the rear view mirror and its just built into that. Some even use the entire mirror not just a section
why didn't you use the Monitor that's built into your Factory Mirror the plug is already up there and the wiring is already at the back, that's what i did

where did you hook up the positve to in the cab for the monitor so it is not on all the time?
I only attached the positive to the backup lights. When the backup lights turns on the whole system turns on. The only wire I had to connect in the cab was a ground wire. Hope this helps!
Hey can you explain the 2 red wire coming off main cable any diagrams?
The red wire is attached to the rear brake light wiring, or any other 12v current that only provides power when in reverse. This signals the screen to turn on. Most systems work without it actually attached, but the rear parking assist will not be shown. Just the camera feed.
CluEngineer, have you had any interference from the license plate lights creating a white screen on the camera?

must be your 1st time doing this, nice attempt tho. 1st off you don't have to cut the wire at the tail light with that connector u use. just insert the wires and press tab down, auto splice. 2nd and important always use a wire loom running wires to prevent short circuit. and 3rd when u came up thru the door trim all u had to do was cut a hole in the rubber grommet and seal hole with silicone afterwards. other than that I liked where you installed the camera. also with that monitor you could have wired it pos n neg to that connector overhead. even if it has constant power it wont come on until the rear cam comes on when you put it in reverse. signal sensing turn on.

The constructive feedback is great though. In regards to your last tip, I am just hesitant on connecting it to a power source that’s always on Incase there is a draw.

I like the way he removed the grommet and then I assume you can just slit the bottom lip of the grommet to get the lip to pass the wire and get back under the hole and pop in place. No need to cut a large hole in grommet to feed the RCA connector through and no need to mess with silicone.

Everything is still working fine. I was worried about the hot glue falling off but it works flawlessly.

I did have to cut away some plastic on the sun glass holder and a bit on camera. It was very simple I used a dremel blade. Where I ran the wire out the back of the sunglasses holder I had to cut a channel because when it went to close the wire was getting rubbed so I just cut a channel out. I then used hot glue to secure it in. Also I didn’t see a drain hole in the front door step (might have been covered with factory wiring) but the rear step had one easy to see and use.
