The chat's response to this instantly reminded me how white/segregated the Twitch community is. The reason why these gangs existed and were so violent were because of organized political affairs, and blatant racism. In the early 80s when poverty skyrocketed thanks to Reagan when he took away people's welfare and food stamps, black/brown neighborhoods started to suffer a lot more. The quality of life was rapidly declining for many. A lot more Housing Projects were being built, and many were moving into them. For a lot of kids or adults living in that situation, seeing others lifting themselves out of that by producing/selling drugs, it felt like the only option. Because so many legal options were against them.
The mid-80s is when the War on Drugs started, which was a heavily racialized political stance (and illegal scheme) by Reagan and H. W. Bush, especially used as a topic during the 1989 Election. The Reagan Admin. started to secretly and illegally sell weapons to Iraq throughout his entire presidential run. Then, they would take that money and fund guerilla groups in Nicaragua named 'Contras', who was undergoing a civil war throughout the 80s with a Cuban-influenced communist government (which during the Cold War meant big bad no no no! You must perish!). Reagan also sent Army reconnaissance which included aircraft, and Contras being guerillas and apparent drug dealers would place crates of crack onto Army aircraft, which was "miraculously" never officially reported. The CIA published a report in 1996 after word started to spread around black communities that the government might have had a hand in turning a blind eye to drug smuggling if it was for black people, and they were ultimately correct.
    H. W. Bush was responsible for beefing up police across the country in order to "stop" the crime, giving them more permissions (instead of actually helping people of color, of course not they're the bad guys), and increasing prison populations of specifically black men by the hundreds of thousands. These changes have permeated since, and are responsible for *some* of the cop attitudes we see today. Many cops were/still are racist, planting drugs and making up offenses, with very harsh federal prison sentences for small amounts of drug possession being placed at the time. Single mother out working to provide, which could easier lead to the situation of gang initiation in the 90s. All of this should be taught in high school. None of this is 'critical race theory', this is all very real history that has caused very real segregation and pain for tens of millions of Americans.

Yep it's so crazy how naiveté some of the chat is, I hear the story and I mentally have a checklist going of proper, engaging structure for kids growing up to meet whatever need that is expressed, but older now and trying to apply those things IRL so it comes easier I guess lol. People failing to understand it's not the words, it's the need for an environment that allows the child to nurture and grow, while being socially and communally heard, accepted and respected. This stuff is universal, people need to realize the simplicity there and understand where to go from there.

As a EMT I gotta say it’s both true and false, there are some people you can advise to get transport to hospital by family or friends, but there are some people that absolutely need it. It decreases the risk dying on the way, increasing your chance of survival in the ED. But yea the cost is fucking crazy which is why you should know you can refuse transport at any time if you’re conscious and aware. Just make sure you have a ride to the hospital.

He woke up in the ambulance hearing the ambulance driver ask if he should head to the morgue and asked "do you mind if we stop by the hospital first?" What crazy about l gang culture is that is permeates into every other subculture. I was a graffiti kid and after the 06 gang injunction in Long Beach where they arrested every known gang member on the same day. All hell literally broke loose we had no Og’s the most knowledgeable Street guys where the older graff homies. We ended up beefing with the new gen crips and southsiders. Our crews ended up having to be extremely knowledgeable on California prison politics. And a lot of our members where solidified in the system. Without ever becoming officially sanctioned by the Mexican mafia. It’s a weird gray area now that most gang members locked up during the gang injunction got back out. That power vacuum caused irreparable damage to our generation. Most of the artists from my generation managed to swerve gang banging but it’s still got them killed in the end. I'm definitely part of that 'obviously white' sect of Hasan's community. The first time I had a chance to mix with other races was in the Navy, but they never really talked about the details. One thing that was always a common denominator was the poor living conditions and hopelessness of their neighborhood.
I'm thankful for videos like this so I can understand things with more context. I'll never have that background growing up and will never really understand what it is like, but at least I can understand why it exists and who caused it. Maybe 2 people from my small white town would have ever bothered looking deeper into the issue, but they sure love doing the soldier boy dance and throwing up fake gang signs. Same people are posting racist Trump memes on Facebook these days. Hope we can do better than this someday.

I quickly realized it wasn't for me but saw most other folks getting into it, going to jail, or getting cut up. Some of them came from 2-parent homes and had money but wanted to gang bang. There's no point to it. It's just bravado and angst. I joined the military and asked some of them to come with me to Iraq. None of them wanted to do it. But they'd rather cut and shoot each other up for essentially minimum wage, lol.

he's focusing on the gangs and not the reason the "gangs" came about (and got worse than what they started as). the fact of the matter is the crips started out as a neighborhood watch that didn't have the luxury of calling the cops for aid(inspired by the black panthers). it spawned offshoots , one of which became the bloods, but most turned into other crip chapters. LAPD set other factions against the neighborhood watch rather than risk a direct fight (so the story goes). then Reagan came and because of his "influence" crack changed the rules of the hood. the money made from it and danger around it basically put the "gang" mentality on steroids. that's how we got the current crips and bloods, and the only difference between them and your local neighborhood watch is black folk can't call the police without risking someone in the neighborhood being randomly tortured/killed.

It's too ingrained in the culture, especially black westcoast culture. Plus there has been too much blood shed that either side will never forgive. The bloods and crips are like democrats and republicans. The name will be around but it will mean different things at different times and for different people.

Some kids might sell weed in middle school because their families don't have much they'd rather buy food then smoke weed.
Not saying it's right, but you asked.
I do know kids who did this and their lives were not good, sure they smoked sometimes but they'd rather sell what they had for $20 and get some food instead of smoking it.

@@Rejoice.They say that, but there were plenty of people in south central LA who got by not selling drugs. There has always been so many food banks in the area and a lot of the neighbors trade with each other. It's like anything else, they wanted the easy route straight from poverty to rich when there's no such thing.

@@violett874Your take seems to be "just work and/or constantly patronize charities as a child"
What if the parents don't allow their kid to work, if they're old enough to do so? What if the kid doesn't have a way to get around from food drive to food drive and home with cargo?
Compare all of those complications to the common situation where a kid from school says "hey carry this sack to here at this time and I'll pay you x" then escalating from there.

There's plenty of poor places that don't have community centers and they don't shoot each other or try to kill one another.

Plus this is bs. I'm from the area. They force kids into the gangs. There were so many community centers and activities in the area, I went to many of them for free to help with social anxiety. Plus they kill innocent people all the time.

I keep seeing this pop up in my recommended and read it as the "Crisps Gang" and think it's about some group of British potato chip hooligans.

I feel like it was more about the og leader dying and turning into a power struggle between different sects normally when that happens a lot of resentment is created and they all lose sight of the original reason they were made in the first place
