My right hand to God, I was hired in 1993 as Director of Projects, working directly for Mr. Trump. Over ten years, we converted the estate into the private club it is today. Many conditions had to be met as part of the conversion. I then supervised the addition of the spa, tennis courts and beach cabana construction. Also secured the approval for the large ballroom on the property that opened in 2005. Took care a permitting and supervised construction of Trump International Golf Club as well. This video is a very accurate, concise overview of the property. I would give hour-long tours for various groups talking about the property's history. It was an other-worldly experience for a number of reasons. Story of a lifetime. I left simply because there was nothing left for me to do there - after ten years.
Thank you for your first-hand account! What an incredible experience that must have been, cheers!
Thanks for sharing that Wes! Fascinating. How much of the original did Trump keep?
There were hardly any changes to the exterior of the main house. The same can be said for the historic interior rooms. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has an easement which protects specific features of the estate. We needed permission for most of the additions to the property, like the tennis courts/building and ballroom, etc.
I hope you got paid?
@@ingvarhallstrom2306 I was salaried, with benefits and made sure that everyone who worked through me got paid.
It’s a miracle the place even survived that long in limbo. Most buildings fall victim to the wrecking ball after being neglected that long. The resilient terra cotta roof tiles helped protect the buildings from deteriorating thankfully.
Apparently, it was close to being demolished when Trump bought it.
Such a stunning property. I'm glad it's being cared for.
My step grandfather was an audiologist and had Marjorie Merriweather Post as a client and was at her residence several times. Later in life I knew the person in charge of security there in the middle 80s and I got to go in to do an estimate for an electrical job the place is truly amazing
I acknowledge your skillful diplomacy with this temporarily sensitive subject. I am amused that you chose this home at this moment. Good call! The house has a long history and it's recent high profile warrants a quick biography for people unfamiliar with it. Thank you. I love your channel and have been subscribed for a while now.
"warrants"....well done! (I put a comma after "high profile" so that the word makes the sense I think you intended)
Now everyone can see just how vindictive he can be. He was going to build a spite call to block access to the beach. LOL, reminds me of the story with 2 hotels in Miami, one built a spite wall to block the others sun to the pool.
@@robbroberts , it was a mean way of acquiring the house. But ask yourself the question, what happens to buildings like this if Trump like persons don’t buy them?
The fed and the state really don’t want them . They want someone owning them and paying taxes .

As others have stated, I respect and applaud the tactful manner with which you covered the subject matter.
Why cover it at all? Not fooling anyone.
Great story of fact and no leaning bias. I hope the comments can stay this way. Architecture and its beauty will stand the test of time. This House will continue to grow followers for the way her presents architecture and design.
Thank you for your kind words, cheers!
No bias? It was clear to me This House is no fan of Donald Trump. I am happy it was not a hate-fest.

You are.
I am frequently blown away by the beauty and the excess displayed in these homes. Possibly, even more so by Mar-a-logo. Thanks for the thoughtful and interesting presentation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a mansion in my Father’s kingdom! Shame people want there riches now instead of Immanuel!
Excellent overview of this fantastic creation. Ms. Post appreciated fine architecture and created a treasure. Thanks for your continued fine work.
Always great to see pics of these amazing homes interiors. Thanks for sharing.
Here's to hoping all wonderful homes outlast their owners/builders. We are all just stewards for a little while.
So true!
It's going to remain where it is as it is and that's the best thing for it. Properties last longer when they are operated as profitable businesses to maintain the upkeep and keep people interested in staying there. That's why so many family properties in England are now bed and breakfasts. Interesting tidbit about the UK banning the cart of arms lol. It affects nobody anywhere lol.
I remember when he bought this in 1985, but according to the Miami Herald the Feds could not afford to keep it from being vandalized, fell into disrepair, asking price was 20 million. He paid 5 million for the house, 3 million for the furniture and 2 million for the beachfront with a 12.5 million loan added afterwards. When he hit hard times in 90's due to casino closings he wanted to build "8 mansions" on the beachfront as an investment. City said no, he sued then dropped lawsuit when they both agreed on country club theme and he recouped his millions on memberships.
Trump is a gifted administrator. He was President and took no salary--he served for his love of the USA.
Sharp business guy
He was also the only club in the city that allowed Jews and blacks membership at the time.

I have seen LOADS of videos of the chateaus and palaces in Europe, and not many even are as lavish as this. That place is stunning!
2:46 that humongous painting of the ship on the wall to the left is AMAZING. I cant believe how cool that is!
WOW. What an estate! Thank you so much sharing all thee stunning details and where all the materials came from . I can’t imagine the undertaking of those jobs by the craftsmen. Wish yo had left the pictures up longer so we all could have absorbed much more details. Great job!
Really interesting history and very timely, as well. Good job, Ken, on your diplomacy as you share this information.
Wow. A definitely refined sensibility, taste, and Class went into the making of this Estate. Marjorie Post must have been quite the Lady! Also a business magnate for her time in a male dominated world. I never knew the house was so Beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
American Empress - The Life and Times of Marjorie Merriweather Post by Nancy Ruben Stuart is a great read and still available. "Mrs. Post was a woman ahead of her era, whose natural business acumen created the frozen foods industry and transformed the Postum Cereal Company into The General Foods Corporation."
Mrs. Post understood "the art of the deal" long before Donald Trump.

Well done. I've always wondered about the history of the place, and how it came to be the home of the former president. Well presented. I had no idea that its architecture was so striking and impressive. Amazing construction, to be sure. Keep the videos coming, I'm subscribed and very much enjoy your channel. Cheers!
I remember seeing a documentary which interviewed the late actress, Dina Merrill, talking about her experiences growing up in this 'house'. She loved it very much, as I recall.
She learned her ABCs from the nursery rhyme tiles in her bathroom.
As always, a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to learn! Thank You!
Great story and video, I love old houses just wish I had one of them! :)
This video was factual and informative. So many journalists and news casters could take lessons from you, sir!!!
Yeah from back then, not current. Current its a social club.
A marvelous story and house!

It is a Beautiful House and I love all of the history .
If Donald sells it I hope it will be preserved as a national

Thank you for this great video,

I love your channel and your art of beautifully telling the rich stories of not only these homes but their owners as well. Your words literally speak life into the objects and give us vivid ideas of what it was like. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to details.
It was designed by Zigfelds Scenic designer Joseph Urban, who also designed the Zigfeld Theater in New York.
Perhaps the interiors but the building is one of many Addison Mizner's projects throughout Palm Beach and South Florida. He pretty much started the "Old Florida" look.

Great Video! Was slightly concerned with it bein about Mar-a-lago. But professional and unbiased as always!! Not everything has to go political! Thank you for doing it about the architecture as always. I started watching your channel when you had 3k subs, so happy how much it has grown, it is always a delight to watch.. One of my architectural history professors said it was Post’s intent to contrast her house with that of Wm. Randolph Hearst’s. It’s an interesting notion.
Yes THAT IS INTERESTING!
I've read that Ms Post had a 2 drink limit at her parties and had everyone square dance after dinner.
I have a 8 drink minimum and twerking after arrival, and that's most likely why I live in a dump instead of something like Mar-A-Lago.
Sounds like Hearst

Thank you Ken for your videos! I love history and enjoy your videos very much 💖
Well done, thank you.
Pretty amazing this place is still standing in it's original grandeur & has been useful. Not many people could make it work, you have to admit. Look at the former grand mansions in Detroit which costs a pittance to run compared w Mar A Lago.

I have a love-hate relationship with pilasters, especially really ornate ones; but holy moly, that one is so beautiful and tastefully-arranged.
Very insightful video. Greatly enjoyed being educated on the interesting history of Mar-a-Lago without any tainted bias. Knew absolutely nothing about its previous owner. There are aspects of Mar-a-Lago that remind me of William Randolph Hearst's Castle, San Simeon, which I believe was built a few years before Mar-a-Lago. Would love to see a video on that place.
Hearst's San Simeon is an E state that larger than THE state of Rhode Island. Hearst's biggest problem was finding something else to spend his money on.
Good report Ken, very typical to your other vlogs and not political, much appreciated!
The fact he posted this Now is political. Grow up.
@@jalanj2053 This is the third of your snide and snotty posts that I've seen utilizing your unfounded hate. I can't imagine why you bothered watching this episode other than creating opportunity for an attempt at ruining the video for those having architectural interest.

I had the priviledge of being employed there as a dining room captain from 2002-2004. Thank you for a great overview of the history of the Estate. Every day I was there, I would see something new and wonderful in the craftsmanship from the builders in 1922. Great memories!

Love your videos. do you know if the property was air conditioned from the beginning
Why is the future of the estate in question?
Clickbait.
HE MADE THAT PART UP TO SHOW HIS POLITICS
What a joke, the future of the estate is uncertain, what kind of bullshit is this.
SHOWING POLITICAL BIAS THAT HE SAID NOT FOR US TO DO. I JUST SUBSCRIBED & WILL UNSUBSCRIBED.
I appreciate anybody who is willing to save a Grand historic property and especially not gut the place and modernize it. I especially appreciate someone who recognizes that one's political opinion should have nothing to do with their feelings on saving historic architecture. Although the current politics of today has seeped into architectural academic lectures and professors are trying to claim that racism and colonialism is seeped into the history of American architecture. I don't think it is a relevant connection and I appreciate that politics is left out of this channel.
yet, you just spewed a lot of political bs.
@@David49305 except I noticed quite a few people who liked my comment and didn't say anything about a "chosen political side"..I think most people appreciate someone willing to point out things we all see.
"professors are trying to claim that racism and colonialism is seeped into the history of American architecture"
Really?
If the Blacks don't like living in a country with the white folks I'm sure they could find Americans who will undo what some other white people did to their ancestors did back in the 1700s and buy them a one way-ticket back to Africa.

Good timely and unbiased report, Ken. Could I see myself living there? Ha, ha, ha. No, but I could see myself getting lost there just looking for milk and Post Toasties.
Funny how the place has such an emphasis on fireplaces. Seems like the last thing you'd need, in that sweltering heat.
Excellent job on informing on the history of this clearly historic house. It is truly a home of its age and it is something that hopefully will be able to be enjoyed for a long time be it in the current owners possession or in another's. Deftly handled.
I'd love to live there!
With the call for civility at the end I feel the comment trolls will not even start the video before they type their comment. Sadly.
But the question posed in the video title was not answered - a bit of a tease, I'd say.
I think these beautiful homes are worth Keeping, thank you President Trump. I’m sure it needed updates and repairs but it is wonderful to see it still with us. Sad in a way that our culture is a throwaway culture.

Wow... interesting
Such a great, non-judgmental history of an incredible property. It's sad to think of it sitting vacant again, since it will probably be seized.
I love looking at these types of homes they're WAY TO BIG for me to live in but how cool would it be to have the means to buy something like this or even being able to rent one.
Look at all the even larger homes that have been built in Beverly Hills. Some up to and over 100,000 square feet.
Thanks for bringing us up to date on the history of the Post family. You mentioned something about tunnels, that’s intriguing. Removing integrity was a fait accompli. Sad!
Trump loves Mar a Lago. He put his stamp on it. He owns it. He's proud of it. It thrives today thanks to him.
So cool
I dont know why people would hate a stunning house, or have anything bad to say towards you for showing us such an amazing place, just because of who owns it! Trump didnt even build it lol. Do those same people hate Cadillacs because he drives in one? So silly to hate an object or place because of a person.
European craftsman, ancient tiles, historic brickwork.....my only complaint is that you didnt show more color pictures! The ship painting on the wall in the dining room! OMG, so many cool, intricate, and beautiful details that I havent seen anywhere else! A lot of European palaces, villas and manor houses tend to have a uniform look.....not this place!
I had seen pictures of the inside, but this video BLEW MY MIND! The fireplaces carved to look like they had canopies? When people imagine living in a castle or palace, this is what they imagine....I think anyway, even more so than if you were in an actual castle. What a warm and comfortable space, but still so opulent! I am blown away, you need to do another video on this place!
It might be silly, but that's human nature. It's impossible to look at Mar-a-Lago and not think of DJT, and directly associate one with the other, Hitlers former residences were destroyed following WW2, but I suspect Mar-a-Lago will survive post-DJT incarceration/death.
@@jlvandat69 lol, its not the same as Hitlers former residences, but Hitlers Munich residence is still there. Yeah, the others got destroyed, but they were also built for him.
Trumps place was built decades before his birth and the imported treasures alone would keep it from getting destroyed. Its just simply not the same.
Incarceration lol. Thats funny.
@@tommywolfe2706 Agree that "it's not the same"- but there's some lessons to be learned none-the-less. In the case of Mar-a-Lago, I see considerable commercial interest after DJT sells or vacates if for no other reason the epic notoriety of the DJT. And I would not be so quick to dismiss incarceration. Besides the other dozen or so criminal investigations, this latest theft of Classified docs is rather important. Very few people have stolen Classified docs and not done time behind bars. The DOJ is under the microscope to ensure DJT isn't given special treatment. He'll do time, eventually.

I believe that this was the second or third largest private residence in the USA , when it was built, it was the tail end of the gilded age and what an age it was , Marjorie Meriweather Post was a fascinating character, she lived big, she had the largest private yacht in the world, married three times, I think and one of her daughter's was the actress, Dina Merrill.
The largest private residence in the U.S. is Vanderbilt's Biltmore in N.Carolina
The 2nd largest is the Otto Kahn estate on Long Island.

Perhaps the channel should be "This Old Palace" ... IMO: The best long-term end-use for these old palaces is as hotels ... But 'resort club' is also a reasonable end-use ... as long as you can find a group of millionaire members who can afford it, and also get along with each other.
That might be the problems in the future. I believe it will go the way of historic landmark, at this point-
