My right hand to God, I was hired in 1993 as Director of Projects, working directly for Mr. Trump. Over ten years, we converted the estate into the private club it is today. Many conditions had to be met as part of the conversion. I then supervised the addition of the spa, tennis courts and beach cabana construction. Also secured the approval for the large ballroom on the property that opened in 2005. Took care a permitting and supervised construction of Trump International Golf Club as well. This video is a very accurate, concise overview of the property. I would give hour-long tours for various groups talking about the property's history. It was an other-worldly experience for a number of reasons. Story of a lifetime. I left simply because there was nothing left for me to do there - after ten years.

    • @WesBlackman

There were hardly any changes to the exterior of the main house. The same can be said for the historic interior rooms. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has an easement which protects specific features of the estate. We needed permission for most of the additions to the property, like the tennis courts/building and ballroom, etc.

I remember when he bought this in 1985, but according to the Miami Herald the Feds could not afford to keep it from being vandalized, fell into disrepair, asking price was 20 million. He paid 5 million for the house, 3 million for the furniture and 2 million for the beachfront with a 12.5 million loan added afterwards. When he hit hard times in 90's due to casino closings he wanted to build "8 mansions" on the beachfront as an investment. City said no, he sued then dropped lawsuit when they both agreed on country club theme and he recouped his millions on memberships.

My favorite Trump story about the property was when he put in a 50 foot flag poll and the city sued him to lower the poll to the 35 feet allowed. He racked up millions in fines then negotiated a deal with the city. He agreed to pay the fine but he wanted the city to donate the money to military charities and they agreed. He then had a 15 foot mound putt in on the property and put a 35 foot poll on it.

Do those same people hate Cadillacs because he drives in one? So silly to hate an object or place because of a person.

OMG, so many cool, intricate, and beautiful details that I havent seen anywhere else! A lot of European palaces, villas and manor houses tend to have a uniform look.....not this place!
I had seen pictures of the inside, but this video BLEW MY MIND! The fireplaces carved to look like they had canopies? It might be silly, but that's human nature. It's impossible to look at Mar-a-Lago and not think of DJT, and directly associate one with the other, Hitlers former residences were destroyed following WW2, but I suspect Mar-a-Lago will survive post-DJT incarceration/death.

And I would not be so quick to dismiss incarceration. Besides the other dozen or so criminal investigations, this latest theft of Classified docs is rather important. Very few people have stolen Classified docs and not done time behind bars. The DOJ is under the microscope to ensure DJT isn't given special treatment. He'll do time, eventually.

Very insightful video. Greatly enjoyed being educated on the interesting history of Mar-a-Lago without any tainted bias. Knew absolutely nothing about its previous owner. There are aspects of Mar-a-Lago that remind me of William Randolph Hearst's Castle, San Simeon, which I believe was built a few years before Mar-a-Lago. Would love to see a video on that place.

Hearst's San Simeon is an E state that larger than THE state of Rhode Island. Hearst's biggest problem was finding something else to spend his money on.

I had the priviledge of being employed there as a dining room captain from 2002-2004. Thank you for a great overview of the history of the Estate. Every day I was there, I would see something new and wonderful in the craftsmanship from the builders in 1922. Great memories!

If Trumps decides to sell, the county of Palm Beach should buy the property and turn it into a museum, just like Miami-Dade County did with James Deering's home, in Miami, Florida called today Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.

Bought the adjoining land and threatened to build so high as to block views??Wow? Some things never change? I have many books on Mar A Largo and always find it disturbing that Donald Trump added so much gold leaf...especially in the Moorish and Spanish sections of the home. I would love to see it opened to the public eventually and restored to the original look. Biltmore pays for itself and I'm sure Mas A Lago can do the same.

I believe that this was the second or third largest private residence in the USA , when it was built, it was the tail end of the gilded age and what an age it was , Marjorie Meriweather Post was a fascinating character, she lived big, she had the largest private yacht in the world, married three times, I think and one of her daughter's was the actress, Dina Merrill.
