correct call. you cant just leave the batters box before the pitch is barely out of the pitchers hands. Ortiz know this as well. Anyone whos played in any sort of organized baseball league kows this
The pitch wasn't a strike, but by rule, the umpire can call a strike if the batter backs out of the batter box without a timeout being called and the umpire did that. Ortiz should know this. The umpire was right to do it.
Douglas Sopak It doesn't matter if he was still in the box. As soon as he backed off as if time has been called, nothing Ortiz can do. The pitch wouldn't even have to be thrown and the umpire can call it a strike.
No time was called..umpire is supposed to call a strike only if it's in the 'zone' ..ya Ortiz is a dumbass for stepping away, but that doesn't automatically mean it's a strike if the pitch is thrown in the dirt
The Silent Troll Defuser HD even if that ball was a ball, the ump would just call it a strike cause ortiz just disrespected the game of baseball by walking out the box before the pitcher released the ball. To me that is a dick move
imnotgaybut20is20 I wouldn't go so far as to say that, he was heading out pretty much on a gamble that the fourth pitch being a ball which it was. The umpire didn't like the fact that he gambled and called it a strike. How would you feel having the winning hand at poker then being told that because the hand you went in on was crappy that you don't win. Bad call by ump poor attitude by Ortiz.

This is the beauty of the game. I hope they never allow "replay" for balls and strikes. Because Ortiz here deserved for that pitch to be called a strike. He was making a mockery of his at bat. The ump did the right thing, and I applaud him for it.
Ree J Matt caught it above his head, not a Red Sox fan but how the fuck is that a strike in anyone's mind? It was caught at the same height as Ortiz's shoulders.
ortiz always does that bullshit where he steps out before the pitcher releases the ball... i mean yeah, they were clearly trying to pitch around him, but dont be a hot dog like that, just stand in there and take the pitch. how hard is that. also isn't there some rule that states when the batter steps out without being granted time and the ball is pitched, the ump can just call it a strike if he wants??
I would have to check my MLB rule book on that one. But at the very least, there should be a rule that states, once a pitcher goes into his windup, the batter CANT step out of the batters box, cos the ball is in play. That's like calling a time out in football, after the ball is snapped. So why should baseball be an exception from that rule? Ortiz is nothing but a crybaby. He whined here, & he's already starting to whine about that new time clock rule that MLB is putting in place. I'm no fan of the clock, but if MLB is really serious about speeding the game along, why not make it a rule that states, when a pitcher goes into his windup, the batter cant call time? And once a batter steps into the box, he cant step out, till his at bat is over? But this crap of stepping in & stepping out is getting ridiculous. They step in & out more times than what you would do, at a square dance. As a batter, if your that whipped, maybe its cos you suck. But Jesus Christ son, step in & swing the damn bat. But that's just me.
The first pitch was a little high, but when you're walking out of the box before anything is even called like that... Plus he swung at ball four at the end anyways haha
+Temple Philly If you start to leave the box before the pitch is delivered by rules the Umpire can call whatever he wants. The Umpire was standing up to Ortiz's BS.
Ortiz stepped out of the box LONG before the pitch ever got there, taking away any point of reference the umpire had to make a call, so as he SHOULD do, if it's close, call it a strike. Then Ortiz starts to show up the umpire - BAD move. No one will remember the ump, but they will certainly remember Ortiz' childish prima dona rant.
LegoPhoenixGames Watch a little closer...The right foot is still very much in the batter's box, it was the left foot that came out of the batters box, but at this point the catcher had already caught the ball--it's actually pretty easy to tell cause you can hear ball hit the glove before Ortiz stepped out. So it went like this: (1)Ortiz Right foot Step back (still in box), (2)Pitcher Delivery, (3)Catcher caught pitch, (4)Ortiz Left foot steps out of batter box.
J Gallegos Yeah But the left foot was still out and besides the strike zone was your chest to your knees. and it was outside corner. and when the Pitcher was it his motion the LEFT Foot went but it was still in the box, then his right foot came out but it was still in air before he Touched Ground
At the very least this umpire let Ortiz have his say for a while before ejecting him. The umpire did a good job in that aspect. Umpires of today have thin skin when a player gets upset with the call and take it too personally. The worst umpire by far is Vic Carapazza.
I... I... I do. I play baseball so I know hot the strike zone works.. And plus if you use your eyes you can clearly tell it would still be a ball even if the "strike zone is altered"
Before the pitch was even thrown he stepped out of the box and threw his bat to the side and the umpire called the right call I would have called the same
Yep. More than any other sport, baseball (whether it be the players on the opposing team or the umpires) punishes you for showboat. Humility is praised and is often the norm in America's pastime. I have always found it quite interesting the different traditions that go along with each sport
Terrible call, but he BADLY overreacted. I have no idea why he has such a good reputation in baseball when he's exploded like this several times (as well as charged the mound).
He charged the mound against the Orioles when Gregg told him something offensive. He overreacted a couple of times. For being Dominican and hit so many times this guy has a really good patience. You seem to hate him for no reason.
Ortiz is a bitch...ump prolly knew he made the wrong call, but the reason he made that call is because Ortiz step out of the box early, Ortiz has little humility and thinks he runs the show that's why I don't like him
Ryan Hardison , I didn't ask you.... :3, JK HAHAHA, I couldn't care less if other people didn't like him, there he is making millions playing the sport he likes, while I'm here looking for getting into an University where I might play one of the two sports I like the most, but I'm undecided, which means I got a dilemma and Ortiz isn't going to help me out. David Ortiz is quite humble I believe, at least for being a celebrity, if justin Bieber was like ortiz he wouldn't have any problems. Ortiz left the box early, he is a veteran, and has a really good eye, an Umpire is supposed to call the game for the plays that are made, not personal problems or opinions. As soon as an Ump gets in the field he stops being a human, he becomes an Umpire, and I respect good umpires and hate any bad referee, I can take mistakes, but if he did it on purpose then he clearly is an asshole to the eyes of most people. If you were the Ump what would you have done?
Yuuto Aizawa I would of called the strike if the ball hit the ground, Ortiz is playing in the bigs, he's a professional and he needs to understand that balls and strikes aren't called into the ball hits the mit, throwing his bat early was a selfish gesture to Baltimore and anyone else that was watching that game, saying that "I'm the man and I can do whatever I want", same goes for when he hits a homerun and just stands at the plate sometimes after doing it...Yasiel Puig is the same way right now
Ryan Hardison He didnt throw the bat early. the only reason he stepped out of the box early was he thought they werent gonna pitch to him. listen to the announcer he says the same thing
Before the release of the pitch, Ortiz stands up making his strike zone a little bigger than usual. The ball never gets above the bottom of his letters.
yeah, i do. also, what's to know? you don't have to (and usually should not) swing on 3-0, but you've gotta at least feign interest. the strike zone is not set in stone, at any point (sorry!). it is a conceptual zone based specifically on your ability to hit (b/c this isn't a game of keep-away). if you rise (as a motion separate from what's required to swing the bat), then so does the zone. esp. if you turn your back to the pitch. damn. don't let that little strike zone diagram fool you.
The umpire made the right call. the strike zone is defined by the letters on the jersey to the kneecap. by standing up, he expanded the strike zone, and that box that was on the screen is the strike zone when he is in his hitting stance, not the one the umpire referenced in making the call. pause it at :24, and you will see that Wieters' glove is below the lettering on Ortiz' jersey, and it was over the plate, therefore it was a strike.
Shits hilarious man everybody hating on ortiz but his the best postseason hitter ever lol and everybody gives him shit because his a veteran and a guaranteed hall of famer
Baseball is a game of class and unwritten rules. Ortiz showing up the pitcher like that is bushleauge. The pitch was obviously a ball but i believe the ump was in the right. Its either a ball or Ortiz get plunked on his next ab
To clarify something, bye rule the strike zone to the letters. The umps rarely call it and MLB doesn't enforce it (really pisses me off). Despite this, the ball crossed over the plate and between his belt and letters as he was standing. Therefore the pitched ball WAS strike one.
Even as an Oriole fan who hates the Red Sox I always under the impression Ortiz was a decent guy but I guess I was wrong. He's not playing for Boston anymore, he's playing for himself and only cares about his own record, that became even more clear this year.
The last pitch was a good pitch to get a batter to swing but the first two were clearly balls and I thought it was awesome to see him smash that bat haha
i dont mean to be rude or anything, but the rule is the stance you are in when you step into the batters box is how the strike zone will be determined through out the pitch. you can stand up and it would have still been a ball.
DH is the best thing that has happend: the pitcher doesnt have to wear out by swing and people like ortiz or even Griffey (if he came back) gave them longer careers
This is not an argument you're going to win. From the rule book: "The STRIKE ZONE is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants". Let's play a game. Pause the video when the 3-1 pitch crosses the plate. Look where it is in relation to Ortiz. Is it below the midpoint between his shoulders and belt? (Hint: yes) If so, the pitch is a strike.
The umpire should have called that first pitch a ball because it was and everyone in the stadium knew it was a ball. Umpire let Ortiz slide as he was walking away talkin smack because he knew he made the wrong call. I'm not an Ortiz fan by any means but I understand his frsutration with the call. Always been a part of baseball.
I thought he admitted it, didn't he? That's what my dad told me awhile back. I am a Twins fan so I remember when Ortiz started his career, and I like him a lot.
that pitch touched the border of the strike zone. Ump still give pitcher strike call for that plenty of time. And the thing that Ortis stepped out of the box too early just made the ump don't have the measure (ortis body) to make the best call
The fourth pitch did clip the top of the zone. "Strike" is the correct call. By not asking for time before stepping away, Ortiz placed himself in that situation. orioles1901 is right. Ortiz's ego is more important than his team.
The other way to look it at it is to "sacrifice" the purity of the sport for the sake of making it more entertaining, which is, at its core, the purpose of all sport.
Just asking but if you step out of the batters box during a pitch, doesn't the strike zone get bigger? One of my teammates stepped out of the box a couple times and had a strike or two called against him. I don't agree with the call but I don't disagree with it either. Just want someone else's opinion.
David Ortiz doesn´t need any therapy at all; he is one of the most disciplaned players of MLB; a hole gentleman. He got a very bad call, and simply Blows Up. If you know about baseball, basketball or any physical Sport, you should know that those things happen some times. But if you want to quit for been a Red Sox fan for this simplicity, maybe you should see your own anger and go on therapy, or maybe you are not a real Red Sox Fan. One last thing, respect is no anger, he just deserved.
Ortiz isn't a bad guy, but first, he backed out before the ball left the mound, and the ball was below the midpoint of his shoulders and belt. It was a strike no question. The second one was close. It was his own fault for striking out. I don't blame him for thinking it was a bad call, but it wasn't.
Granted, Ortiz shouldn't have walked out before the ball was pitched, and he shouldn't have tossed his bat before the call was made. But the ump still didn't make a good call. And keep in mind that this is coming form an Ortiz superfan. Even I admit that this was a cocky move.
in this situation i can think of no better person then Dustin pedroia to calm David Ortiz down they have been playing ball together for years...that's why Dustin forgave David for almost hitting with pieces of bat..god bless Dustin pedroia
Not that I'm a lip reader or anything, but Pedroia says (after papi almost killed him): "Hey! What's the matter? Look at me. What's the matter?" PEDROIA CALMING THE BEAST
"David Ortiz" is the true definition of the word Scumbag. I can tolerate a lot of assholes, but this guy is at such a high level on the scumbag gauge, it's scary.
That's what we call passion, that is the reason he just added a third world series ring to his finger last October. Maybe if the Orioles had some they wouldn't be perennial basement dwellers..... .
Wow, and people say Yankees fans are bad. Every Boston fan i've seen on this video has spit out the most nonsensical bullshit. They've ignored the fact that there star slugger completely overreacted to a minor call, when his team was up comfortably. You all say that's, "passion," but that term is no juxtiposition to the term, "class." Just accept the fact that he was out of line, and should've batted like a veteran, instead of a celebrity.
Joe DeRosa Everyone is an individual... how do you know how you would act? There are only two things in life you can guarantee... You may not do what he did personally, maybe hit a water cooler? What is the difference between hitting the phone or a water cooler? That has been done NUMEROUS times and not one of those players were as heavily scrutinized as he was in this situation.
I didn't get to see the at bat but from the footage here, there was no time out called. If it was, it is at the umpire's discretion as to grant it or not. The ball was up but close enough to where an umpire that didn't like Papi's move could call it a strike. The second strike was a tailing fastball. Any pitch with movement is going to leave more up to the umpire to decide. It was borderline and an ump that would call the previous pitch a strike is not going to let an even closer one go.
He should have been ejected for slinging the bat after the first strike call. And if I was the ump, I'd call anything a strike just to spite the batter for stepping out of the box during the pitchers windup.
MLB rules: 6.02(c) If the batter refuses to take his position in the batters box during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the batter. He left the box, so it was automatically a strike. Only in baseball.
correct call. you cant just leave the batters box before the pitch is barely out of the pitchers hands. Ortiz know this as well. Anyone whos played in any sort of organized baseball league kows this
you're pretty much right... the only time they would call it a ball if it's heading towards you

He got struck out due to the Umpire's first 2 bad calls of strike. I feel Ortiz's anger...
Ortiz is the MVP if they win.
DH is the best thing that has happend: the pitcher doesnt have to wear out by swing and people like ortiz or even Griffey (if he came back) gave them longer careers
Timmons is IMO one of the worst umpires in the game, he's blown so many calls, you can't keep count, but I think he made the right here.
Nah Joe West Is Way Worse Than Timmons
What a great guy.
1:56 Pedroia is like, "DUDE! CALM THE HELL DOWN!"
Even though I'm a yankees fan, this is excellent. I fucking love big papi
David Ortiz needs a hug
that pitch touched the border of the strike zone. Ump still give pitcher strike call for that plenty of time. And the thing that Ortis stepped out of the box too early just made the ump don't have the measure (ortis body) to make the best call
If you step completely out of the box without calling time, the ball is called a strike. Thats the rule.
The fourth pitch did clip the top of the zone. "Strike" is the correct call. By not asking for time before stepping away, Ortiz placed himself in that situation. orioles1901 is right. Ortiz's ego is more important than his team.
im an os fan i give props to pedroia for being the better man
Real class act.
he must have had a 24 ounce coffee, a few energy drinks and energy shots with his mountain dew and steroid juice lunch.
In baseball, a "clear strike" for BIG Papi is differently called than a "clear strike" on me, based on stance.
this is fucking hilarious coming from an orioles fan.. you would take Ortiz on your team in a heartbeat
The other way to look it at it is to "sacrifice" the purity of the sport for the sake of making it more entertaining, which is, at its core, the purpose of all sport.
Also, Tim Timmons has one of the smaller strike zones in the MLB, and an even smaller high strike zone than most other umpires.
Just asking but if you step out of the batters box during a pitch, doesn't the strike zone get bigger? One of my teammates stepped out of the box a couple times and had a strike or two called against him. I don't agree with the call but I don't disagree with it either. Just want someone else's opinion.
Miss him
David Ortiz doesn´t need any therapy at all; he is one of the most disciplaned players of MLB; a hole gentleman.
+RundownOyster check the kzone
Well the tv kzone isn't accurate, but it does catch the top of the zone.
+Redsoxking check the rule book dude rundownoster is correct
+Christopher C I did it was only being he was not in his batting stance
true
Granted, Ortiz shouldn't have walked out before the ball was pitched, and he shouldn't have tossed his bat before the call was made. But the ump still didn't make a good call. And keep in mind that this is coming form an Ortiz superfan. Even I admit that this was a cocky move.
Ortiz = *
Can't fail a PEDS test and waltz into Cooperstown, Papi.
in this situation i can think of no better person then Dustin pedroia to calm David Ortiz down they have been playing ball together for years...that's why Dustin forgave David for almost hitting with pieces of bat..god bless Dustin pedroia
KBP120 YOU JUST MAD BECAUSE HE GOT 3 WORLD SERIES RINGS AND YOUR PUNKASS TEAM COULD ONLY DREAM OF THAT.
Doctor Spencer You are deranged. You should be locked up to protect the civilized people of your community.
kinda shows what kind of a person Ortiz is after smashing a wall when he's up by 5 runs.
That's what we call passion, that is the reason he just added a third world series ring to his finger last October. Maybe if the Orioles had some they wouldn't be perennial basement dwellers..... .
RedSoxNation92 That "passion" almost took your franchise player's head off. Literally.
Three rings... wish you had a guy like him on the horribles roster.
Joe DeRosa
Everyone is an individual... how do you know how you would act?
+Clarence Aaron Jones that was a bullshit call and you know it ejection was garbage and you know it more discrimination against Boston Sports.
+Clarence Aaron Jones He slinged the bat because he thought he had a walk at that point, which is probably why the umpire didn't eject him.
and that's why you aren't an umpire
MLB rules:
6.02(c) If the batter refuses to take his position in the batters box during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the batter.
He left the box, so it was automatically a strike. Only in baseball.
The best part is the cans-hooked-with-string phone they had rigged up for the game the next evening
I love how all two was a strike and he didn't swing and the third was a ball and he swung
