I never realized until literally just now that the entire plotline of the kid with his album and a "distracted mother leading to crisis" was a way of telling parents that it's their responsibility if they don't want their kids listening to his music, not his to change it.

Originally said 25 years ago cuz I mistakenly mixed up the releases of "without me" and "the real slim shady" and just remembered that song from high school which was 21-24 years ago.
Problem is "Without me" was actually released in 2002.
Someone decided the exact date was of more importance than the point I was actually making so Ive now looked up the date and corrected my statement.
I hope this very long paragraph made a massive difference on your opinion of my original post... otherwise it would mean that both making this edit *and* complaining about the original statment was a massive waste of time.

Those were some hard times my guy. Rap was mainstream in the 90s, and the Congress and Bill Clinton were freaking out with the idea that kids loved it. But they couldn't go after black rappers, because the inner-city drug wars already had black people pissed at them. So fresh, talented white rapper Em hits the scene late 90s, and politicians use him to try to drag down all of rap.
And now you know why Eminem talks smack about politics in a lot of his 00s songs and beyond.

I remember being a kid in the 90s and early 2000's. Eminem was everywhere suddenly. I hardly heard anything from adults about rap even though it had been out for awhile. Then Eminem popped up and suddenly rap was a borderline national security threat. At least the news made it seem like that. It made kids love it more, like always.
My mom didn't care. She said he was no different than when metal music popped up in her childhood so she didn't mind me listening. I had my metal cd's and rap all burned onto my xbox and would play them in game. Brought my xbox to a friends house. As soon as my friends mom heard the music she got pissed off so we pretended the radio was on and stopped the music lol

What was so good about his music back then was he was reacting in real time to the current media outcry about him and the opinions of parents. He used every bit of fuel they gave him. Parents piss n moan about him giving his music to their children and he simply pointed out that it was their job as parents to adhere to the parental advisory warnings his music comes with
Eminem has that line about kids eating up his albums like Valiums and it’s true, he was insanely popular with everyone but that included young children who were attracted to the crazy catchy beats and funny lyrics but couldn’t really understand how fucked up a lot of the lyrics were. Born in 1994, I was one of those children they had pta meetings, press conferences, endless debates on tv/radio about kids who were obsessed with Eminem. You had to be around like 1999-2005 to really know how massive Eminem was. I remember writing in my 2nd grade journal that my favorite artists were Eminem, 50 cent, & Nelly 💀💀 if that doesn’t SCREAM 2003 idk what does
