I found out when my grandfather died that he kept a piece of jewelry I made for him for 20+ years. It nearly broke me. It would not have been the same if it was some random bought piece. It was the thought of keeping a child’s art project. That ad is horrendous.
i agree!! not to mention it objectively doesn't even apply for some people's values and style. personally, I'd much prefer to wear the handmade craft. (btw I am so sorry for your loss. it sounds like he was a kind man ♡)

Man that reminds me of my grandma. When my grandpa was in hospital all the grandchildren made a big drawing together, grandpa passed away soon after. 20+ years later my grandma passed, when walking into her bedroom there was the drawing. Honestly I don't even remember making it I was so young, but there was all of our names in kiddy handwriting wishing grandpa to get well. It wasn't stashed away somewhere, she hung it on her closet in full view. Even after she moved over 10 years after my grandpa's passing she decided she wanted it there.
The first ad lowkey broke me.. How can you ever say that something that was meticulously made by your own child isn’t priceless and can be replaced by a more “aesthetic” bracelet???

Just to share some trivia: the AirPods designed to only last a few years would be an example of obsolescence of quality (and maybe the change in aux ports could be considered obsolescence of functionality), while the Stanley trend moving towards different brands & styles of water bottles would be an example of obsolescence of desirability. The book The Waste Makers defined obsolescence of desirability as: A product that is still sound in terms of quality or performance becomes “worn out” in our minds because a styling or other change makes it seem less desirable.
yeah, I did a course in microeconomic and there was a section talking about advances in technology that "forces" others to become obsolete (disk flops vs CD, "Walkman" vs iPods vs iPhones, wired vs wireless, and so on).
I had a pair, was so upset when they eventually stopped working I now only use the wired headsets. And refuse to ever buy earbuds again.
@@Ali0natedi have the blue hive wireless ones and they are like 20$ if you get them on sale which they often are and look like the 2nd gen AirPods, I’ve had mine like 2 or 3 years now no problems
I'm going on three years with my airpods. I only had to get one replaced because I dropped the left one in the snow at night so I couldnt find it. not sure what I am doing not-wrong
I have airpods that i got probably 3 years ago and i still have them. They stopped working for a while so i put them away and used my raycons, and months later, they worked like they were brand new. But a hugee con is that they hurt my ears. They also die after like an hour of me using them.
I still have my macaroni bracelet tucked away safely. My son will be thirty next year 😅

Ex optician here, companies do the whole buying new glasses are cheaper, when in fact it IS cheaper to just change the lenses(I'm from Asia so it might differ from the US) and I do encourage that if ur frame is perfectly fine, I used to work for a Japanese brand which prides itself on flexibility and longevity of the frames and they have a big discount for just lens replacement... Hearing that it's cheaper to buy a new pair of glasses just breaks my heart
Changing the lenses only was what made me switch to Zenni. I thought I was being frugal reusing my frames...nope. Over $200 just for lenses! I asked the lady if I *had* to pay or could I refuse them. Thankfully I refused them and gor my new favorite pair for less than $25 shipped! I'm in the USA.
It's the same in the USA. We pay for both frames and lenses so just getting the lenses into old frames saves LOADS.

Is there an option to do the opposite of that? My frames often break while my lenses are still fine.
@@erikwest227 yes there is! Your local optician can refit the lenses into the same pair of glasses or edge them into a smaller pair. But do be warned your eye point may be a little bit off due to the shape cut from the lenses. You might experience some dizziness when you wear the lenses again but it shouldn't be too much off from your usual/current pair.
Rule of thumb is that you should generally buy bigger glasses, you can always go smaller but you can't resize it to fit a bigger pair of glasses.
My mom was an artist. She refused to wear the macaroni necklace made at school. Instead she spent time with me to teach me how to make cool beads out of clay. We both still own our ladybug beads bracelets, although mine obviously doesn't fit anymore 😂 now that you reminded me of this I might make myself a new one 😊
Public schools don’t encourage art. They encourage crafts. I would teach kids how to draw animals and administration didn’t like me doing that.

@wildmarjoramdieselpunk6396 i see the benefit in making pasta jewelry like that. It helps with hand-eye coordination. So does drawing, but both can be beneficial.
as a european, the tourists who buy seperate clothes to try to fit in, stick out like a sore thumb. most people you'll see in europe will be just wearing jeans and a shirt
not really, depends on where in Europe you are... I live in Berlin, the most popular attire here is to look like a glorified, comfy hobo. Extra points if you're wearing all black and have a weird haircut. No jeans in sight lol
@@mariogrenadine Yes, definitely depends. I lived in a small city in northern Italy and all the teens and young adults were wearing jeans. I can easily imagine that not being the case in fashion-forward Berlin, though.

This is a lowkey insane suggestion, but if you can find a fashion school nearby/in your city, there will be a lot of design students who want to make a bit of extra cash and would be willing to work with you to make a custom wardrobe for mostly affordable prices in my experience. I recently resorted to this because I cannot locate pants that fit me ever and if I'm going to get them tailored anyway, I might as well just go full custom.
Anyway, I ordered my first pair of long pants and was quoted the equivalent of 40USD, which isn't super cheap, but does come with the benefit of guaranteed quality and perfect fit as well as supporting small local creators. Ofc also pants use a lot of material, which is the main cost factor for comms in fashion, so shirts would probably be cheaper.

@@kittycatcrunchie I appreciate you supporting small local artists and craftspeople, but also, $40 is equivalent to four hours of work at a $10/hr rate. That's ridiculously low for skilled labor and does not include material prices, and as someone who sews, custom clothing takes a chunl of time to make. I'm not that good at sewing so there's a chance the person who made your pants is much more efficient and works faster than I could, but that's still a crazy low price and is probably not a living wage depending on the area you live in. Just something to keep in mind. I'm also not saying this to attack or call you out 🙏 I just want to join this conversation and spread awareness on how bad fast fashion truly is---- the cheap prices of the fast fashion industry have made it almost impossible for sewists and tailoring/alteration specialists to sustain themselves.

i have a hydro flask that i bought in 7th grade when the “vsco girl” trend was going on. I still would use it everyday throughout middle/highschool and this past school year (my senior year) my friend was like “why don’t you just buy a new water bottle” i was so confused i was like because this one still works? Just thought it was crazy how people think it’s weird to have the same thing for so many years, even if it’s still in good condition. I used the same backpack all 4 years of high school, and i’ve had my airpods for 5 years and they still work perfectly fine and are in good condition but for some reason people still feel the need to ask me why i don’t just buy new ones even though there’s nothing wrong with what i currently have😭
The "Europe wardrobe" is very strange to me, because you can buy the clothes in place, it would be more authentic and you don't have to take the luggage
right like i understand buying less stuff in our everyday lives but isn't part of travelling and vacation going shopping? do we not like to see what other people use in their daily lives? like i don't really go out when i'm home but i like to when i travel idk

Its so weird to me as a European in Canada, because people actually dress really similar in my two countries! I love getting a new item when I'm visiting because it's like a souvenir. Plus, I live in a smaller city, so visiting a physical store in a bigger city means I can try stuff on!! On a similar note, visiting cities like Vancouver and Toronto are opportunities to check out slow fashion brands that are headquartered there. Slow fashion is expensive, often you have to pay to return ship, so it can be really hard to bite the bullet on these purchases without trying them on. Its also a nice way to pass a day when you need a rest, people watch, feel like you're just blending in.
ironically, my consumption goes much more unchecked through reddit. the toxicity of that digital space always leads to feeling inadequate and falling for fantasy self consumption. even r/anticonsumption and /frugal, because it tends to glorify a specific kind of person (minimalist, not into "futile" interests, etc). as much as female-driven ads annoy me, as a woman, male dominated spaces always make me super sad and sadness leads to overconsumption
I agree there's a difference between places that just shit on what women like to buy, and actually promoting inclusive frugality or simplicity.

This is a really interesting take. If you listen to financial feminist, she has a similar take. In a lot of finance spaces, feminine interests such as salons, fitness classes, and even things like Starbucks are *always* seen as things that are useless and need to be cut from budgets. Meanwhile, golf outings, gym memberships and sometimes even bar trips are way more hesitant to be considered useless and cut because they’re considered “networking” or self care. I think it’s up to personal discretion but genuinely! Keep it in mind next time you see talks about overconsumption and frugal spending and see how it directly coincides with anti feminine aspects!
Not having too much does NOT mean having a complete minimal space. You also don't HAVE to consider yourself a minimalist to be someone who sort of practices the same sentiments. I value everything I have and my room looks like a color explosion. Nothing like those minimalist aesthetic people but I too have some empty shelves and know exactly what I have. It looks different for everyone, practice simply loving what you have over feeling that being content looks a certain way. We will always feel inadequate because online, everyone cares primarily how things look. It's more about evoking a vibe than actually helping most of the time. So take it from someone who used to have really toxic views of minimalism and having my life together: after finding out about my mood disorder, and covid happening, it's about being happy and practicing GENUINE self care. So clean up your space, go through your stuff, but don't feel pressured for a certain after. Reddit, pinterest, even google can make you feel bad. Sit down with some paper and DRAW what do YOU want your space to look like, with your own complete choice and intention. I felt this comment so hard so I had to drop my input lmao. We got this you guys, no more toxic communities, let's live intentionally and peacefully and respect that things look different for everyone

The one about the bought gift being better than the child’s gift really gets to me.
Context: My parents are divorced and my mom had full custody until I turned 18 and could move into my dad’s.
In 1st or 2nd grade I gifted my dad a paper flower I had made in class with a pipe cleaner and tissue paper. I am 21 and he still has it in his car on a lanyard with keychains my sister and I had made a few years later for Father’s Day. He still has the coasters I made for Father’s Day in 4th grade and uses them daily. He still has the loomed heat pads I made for him when I was 7 and uses them daily still. Almost every gift my siblings and I have made for my dad he has kept and uses regularly. It is means so so much to me. I got to see him twice a week, usually weekly or every other week. But when I was very little it wasn’t as often.
On the other hand, Mother’s Day, probably the same year as the Father’s Day coaster gift, I get in the car and excitedly give her my gift I made in class and she throws it in the back of the car smashing it against the back window and starts screaming at me for something I didn’t clean up before I left for school. The window was fine, the gift I made broke. She never apologized and I never once had seen her use or keep the things me and my siblings had made for her.

Thank you for sharing this. I hope you have healed or are healing and I hope if you ever have children that the love shown by your dad is the same you express to them. As f*cked up as it is I feel like these experiences show us what it means to be caring and how doing the opposite affects people and relationships. I feel for you. Though I never experienced divorce personally, I relate to elements of your story. I saw recently something like "people hate children as though they're not just little humans just trying to learn and navigate the world" and I feel that here, you didn't deserve that at all from your mom. But your dad totally got it, it's the signs of love and gratitude. Thank you for sharing, your comment healed me a little bit too.
as a person that has been to the many wild places in the US, national and state parks across the entire country, for *hours* because my husband is a landscape photographer.... not once, ONCE, has anyone questioned us for being dressed in tee shirts, jeans, and sweatshirts. No gear required. Nothing. The only barrier to entry is being able to get there, and perhaps a park fee. It's outdoors, you don't need fancy anything. People on the trail give 0 shits about what you're wearing. They'll nod, say "nice hike", and go about their business.
The only time you *might* need gear is to compress warm or cool gear for backpacking I’ve found. Or shoes with appropriate traction.
I’ve done similar and tbh have been worse and hiked in whatever I’m wearing including dresses if it’s not too strenuous.
The rubber seal round the front windscreen on my mums car is deteriorating, so, she rang up the garage about getting a replacement, she was told that once a car is ten years old, it is considered obsolete.
She is now trying various suggestions they have her in trying to get one. If none of these work out, she will have to her rid of her car that, despite being twenty-four years old, has absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than the rubber seal. She will then lose her independence because she isn't in a position to get another one. It's ridiculous.
Can she not find a different mechanic??
Have her call a windshield replacement company like Belron or Safelight
@catcat2607 she tried various mechanics and also rang the dealership, but, unfortunately, they all said the same thing. However, she did find a way round it in the end.
@FeralSpinster Thank you. She actually did try a local windshield repair place, but they wouldn't touch it. However, the guy gave her the name of the owner of a spray paint shop or something similar. When she rang up to talk to him, she explained the situation and about not wanting to lose her independence, etc, and could be help. He did no problem. She's taking it in next week. She's getting the use of a little car while they've got hers all for £35. She is absolutely ecstatic.
Which country is this in? I'm from one of the many parts of the world where only the richest 5-10% buy cars new, and everyone else is repairing old cars
So, my day job is in class action, I am a legal editor. Companies do get sued in Anti-trust cases, including Apple, for plan obsolesce. HOWEVER, when you are such a huge company making so much money, a lawsuit, even in the billions, is just a slap on the wrist. And as we have no 3 strike rules, they can keep doing it without any real punishment sadly.
We the consumers can choose other products
@@carrino15 We 100% can, but the systems of power will still not truly punish those companies, which is the point of my statement. Not enough people will be fiscally able or will be willing to shop differently, so the only way change can be 100% for sure for ever applied to companies if the political powers that be stop letting themselves be sold by campaign donations and make changes to laws that hinder companies from being able to stay in business if they keep breaking the same laws over and over again.
And who has the power is something, in the USA at least, that is fully in the control of people and a place where even a few people can make a difference, at least in state rep levels, who are the people making the most laws.
I remember seeing a post from Laurier University a couple years ago about how they opened a room on campus where they would give away things left in residences. I hope that stayed active!

Queen's University used to have organised swap days for furniture when I was there! Also Queen's allows students to buy mini-fridges, the appliance we were banned from was hotplates. I'd never heard of the fridge rental company Shawna talked about, I wonder if it's a mostly GTA-centric thing? Student housing in Kingston is often 6 or 7 people to a fridge, so it actually makes sense for a lot of students to get a mini-fridge for their dorm and then use it all four years for personal beverages and food you don't want stolen. I still have my mini-fridge 10 years later. When our apartment's fridge died this year we pulled it out of temporary storage and it saved us from having to throw out all our condiments while waiting for the landlord to replace it.
That first ad you mention! Ugh! I do agree that some people would think it's "cute" or "funny", but mostly because they are actually shallow and materialistic enough to relate to the message deep down. I'm sure I gave my mom macaroni art countless times (among other types of kid art) and I remember the look of absolute joy on her face when she'd say "I LOVE IT...this is my new favorite thing". She'd literally display it for years...our house was covered in kid art back in the day.
Honestly i thought the ad was clever. I would never down play the sentimentality of kids crafts but I also know that realistically if you want to give your parent a gift that they can wear all the time, in the shower, in public without getting weird looks, etc, it make sense to “upgrade” to traditional jewelry
My mom framed some of my kindergarten art 😅 I had to hide it away when we moved so she wouldn’t hang it up in the new house (I was not and am still not an artist). But she loves it so I made sure it’s safe but not visible to guests.
Whoever approved that diamond necklace ad sure doesn’t have kids. I will wear macaroni all day honey, if my kid made it, it’s freaking priceless!! 😂🎉
Literally. And the thing is if the kid made it for you, they are using the skills and resources they DO have at the time to show love. A purchase does not do that. When I make things for others I feel so much better than just getting them something, a lot more intention goes into something made for someone

I had to buy a new wardrobe for travel once. It was an international work trip post-Covid, I hadn’t been in the office for at least 2 years and none of my work clothes fit anymore. I spent three months prior shopping around and it was emotionally taxing, time consuming, and expensive. I can’t understand why anyone would do that intentionally?? And fortunately, all those clothes are still in my closet and I wear them regularly for conferences.
When I worked in an office, I only had SO MANY CLOTHES. And I remember my boss insulted me one particular day for “wearing the same clothes over and over!!” This same woman wouldn’t even give me a raise, and eventually fired me when I stood up to her nastiness. I am STILL not sorry I only had so many clothes. I only wore that stuff to work in, so why would I buy more, and just to please HER????
My 2012 iPad Air was no longer useable because the OS could not be updated anymore, and all my apps forced updates so were not compatible. Since I use GarageBand, I had to get an updated Apple product. Since I use a microphone with a cord, I needed the aux port. Luckily I was able to get a 2017 iPad Air. So hopefully I’m good for another 4 years…

I think a big reason why so much stuff is bought for dorms is because of how bad they are. I needed a fan to avoid getting sick because the window didn’t open. I needed containers to store things because otherwise there would be enough space. I was in one of the newer buildings and it made me so incredibly depressed because it was such a bad environment
Just a note that food packaging will likely be the last single use plastic to switch out. We don’t have a good alternative (I’m talking about vacuum sealed meat etc). Fruit and vegetables don’t need plastic except to force you to purchase in bulk which probably moves more product
1. I have one Stanley that my kids gave me, but im embarrassed to use it because its stanley has become so problematic.
2. I used to be the person who bought a new wardrobe to travel. You know what i wear? What im comfortable in. Also i have more money for traveling now.
3. Im on a challenge to use up and never buy single use again.

Cover the branding with a vinyl sticker. People might still recognise the shape, but at least you won't be representing them.
Make sure certain products are kept on hand though like cotton rounds for any wounds sorta things to keep things from building and transferring bad bacteria! Any what is being reused needs to be cleaned properly and sterilized correctly between uses for certain items so pls do ur research for what reusable options you chose to forgo single use items on 👍

i love that one too! i'm an autistic woman who has a spending problem and i peruse that subreddit for ideas of how to curb my emotional compulsive spending
If you want to adapt to the locals in Germany be sure to wear socks in your sandals and - if it raining or cold - a Jack Wolfskin coat. Visiting Europe is not really something you need special clothes for :) we have h&m, too.
But on a more serious level. A lot of people don’t know how to avoid buying anymore. Hemming is not a usual skill. But it’s more difficult than before. Economy is built around quick consumption. It’s on purpose: you teach for the economy to consume and support the economy. You’re able to make things yourself or reuse? Bad: Means less consumption, less reason to work so much that you don’t have time to repair, repurpose, research for better options.
My parents still had handwork (sewing, knitting, crocheting) in school and were - in theory - able to repair everything in their wardrobe but shoes. I had to learn it by myself as an adult. Al lot of people even had „Home economy“ with cooking from scratch, budgeting, homemaking skills. Boys and girls! I’m happy a lot of these life skills are coming back. My kids are learning weaving in kindergarten.
Just a small note: Zara and H&M are European companies. Zara's origin is in Spain and H&M's in Sweden. As long as American's dress something from those shops, there are basically dressing as an average European. Though, how they style their clothes and their behaviour is usually what marks them as Americans.

It's completely different here in Poland when it comes to dorms (I currently live in one haha). We are not kicked out immediately after exams (in most cases we can stay until end of holidays). Also the fridges - now after renovations every room has separate fridge included, but when i started studying they did not. Student from previous years were selling their fridges really cheap (maybe 10 - 50 dollars, sometimes for beer xD), nobody was throwing them away, I think some of them were in that cycle for around 20 years haha. I study in Toruń, other cities might be different. Also dorms are really affordable, few years ago i paid 100 dolars a month... :)
Mother's/father's day are not gift giving holidays. They're days to recognize them but it's best to keep it simple. Breakfast in bed, an outing to spend with the kids and a requested dinner. That's how we enjoy the "holiday"
The university furniture thing is crazy! When I was in out of state dorms I showed up with the minimum amount of items possible for me to get by and took all of it home with me and my brothers reused it when it was their turn (it was mostly pretty gender neutral). I don’t think my roommates tossed out anything either! I didn’t realize what a big issue it really was until I moved into a different college town more permanently, but at least here locals know that students dump all their stuff at the end of the school year and will go comb through it and take stuff home that they need. So hopefully a comfort that it doesn’t all go to landfill!
Stanley, Yeti to a lesser extent, Hydroflask, Nalgene bottles, Swell bottles, Sigg bottles, Starbucks cups (red cup day?)… You track it, it’s been going on many, many years; it’s nothing actually new. There’s a new one? There’ll be another new one. The permanent reusability of each is, at the end of the day, a marketing technique that allows us to justify a big initial spend mentally, financially, and perhaps most importantly, socially. But it’s not actually the driving force; the driving force is trendiness, status, and aesthetic.

i never understand the buy a new wardrobe for a trip, i literally wear the same two to three outfits on vacation bc im on VACATION lmaoooo, like to relax and enjoy the vacation not worry about my outfits
I like to do it for fun and because I can afford it. Plus it’s fun looking at an article of clothing and reminding yourself of your vacation.

This may be a ridiculous suggestion that is in no way feasible, but if it’s not a thing I think it should be. But maybe if you can find some trans people near you that are transitioning in the other direction, and that are similar in size… you could swap clothes?

One of my favorite RUclips channels from back in like 2007 got its start because they realized that students at their college were throwing away their perfectly good microwaves (Is It a Good Idea to Microwave This). I was lucky enough to go to a school where dorms came with a couch and kitchen with appliances, but every year I would still see mirrors, chairs, rugs, all perfectly functional go out to the dumpsters.
The plastic in the plastic frame glasses does get more brittle over time, unfortunately, so popping the frames out will damage it.a frame with metal around the lense is the way to go if you want to reuse

The college thing makes me think that it could be beneficial for resale shops in the area just take a moving truck to campus during move out time, park close to the dumpsters and buy the stuff that could be reused at a low price to resell in a resale store near campus and load it up right there. If someone abandons something good at the dumpster without bothering to try to sell it, they could still put it in the truck. It would also benefit the university because most places have to pay for trash service by volume.

At my work, I’ve had a few mums come in with their kids’ jewellery on, usually a necklace or bracelet- it’s so sweet to see it and the colours usually match their outfits too 😊 I also worked in daycare and I loved when the kids would draw me something. I’ve got drawings from my friends that are 10+ years old, and even if I’m not talking to them anymore it has good memories. One of those friends has sadly died by suicide a year ago and I still have a bookmark she gave me from one of her trips - don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it ❤
WOW, I got laser eye surgery many years ago and it has paid for itself in the amount of frames, lens, contacts and solutions that I no longer needed. That surgery has also spared the landfill of all of that stuff. In addition to all that plastic that contact solutions are packaged in that didn't go to the landfill.
I would highly recommend this surgery to those who are candidates, my prescription was pretty intense, I was functionally blind.

I was quoted $10K per eye. Haven’t spent near that on glasses etc., and my prescription changes over time. Also, I donate my old glasses at the optometrist’s office, for use in developing countries.
@@EvelynSaungikar I believe it depends on insurance. Most insurances don't cover it unless you're legally blind. Otherwise it's considered a cosmetic surgery. I was also quoted 10k because I only have moderate nearsightedness. I'm super annoyed at my optometrist for continuing to tell me I'm a good candidate for the surgery. I'm not made of money.

buying clothes to dress like the locals seems and feels like you are dressing up in a costumes 😂 😂 I just came back from vacay few weeks ago and I managed to get two swimsuits because it was a beach destination and I didnt own anything at all. Everything else was what I wear in the summer in TO.
In the USA it depends on the school. At the university of Wyoming, you could bring a mini-fridge but only in dorms that did not have a rug. At Portland State University, we had mini fridges built into our dorms at no extra cost. UWYO really pushed the dinning plan and dinning dollars, they made their money off the 3rd party kiosks and cafe group that sold the food at the dinning halls. Whereas PSU was in the dead of the city and knew students have options, so they just added hot plates and fridges in the doors to encourage renting a dorm over an apartment.
I am old enough to remember going with my Mom and my Grandfather to the repair place. We took everything portable from TVs and radios, toasters and blenders, clocks and lamps when they weren't doing their jobs quite right or a cord needed to be replaced. It was a normal errand. Then a day came when the replacement parts were twice as much as a whole new thing. I think it was deliberate. Why let people buy a new bit when you could get them to buy a whole new thing.
It seems absolutely insane, that a university just kicks out students after their finals. In most countries where I have lived in Europe, if you live in dormitories, there is a set date by which you have to move out. It may be 2-3 weeks after your last final, but a minimum of 5-7 days.
I’ve never had an issue getting new lenses put into old frames. Maybe it’s because yours are plastic? I’ve only ever had metal frames (the plastic ones look like they’re only for people with impeccably symmetrical heads and no eyelashes, lol) so you just unscrew, replace, screw. And they’ve never charged me for the replacing and fitting, just for the lenses themselves.
I guess maybe that's the reason. Because I got new lenses in my old frame and after a while, I noticed that the frame morphed so one of the lenses just fall out. I ended up getting new glasses after that 😢
I got a pair of 30ish dollar earbuds in 2020 i think. Still kicking. I’m an ADHDer who is known for losing things and I’ve never lost these. If you’re like me and you lose things easily, I’d get in the habit of designating a place for small, easily lost items. It’s helped me a lot. I also got a cheap zipper pouch from Daiso that’s brightly colored so I’m even less likely to lose it.
Same here. I’ve lost so many earbuds but I bought a pink pair online about a year ago that I still have. Lost a few times but found them lmao. They still work perfectly.

I’ve had my Stanley for well over a year and my husband has had his for around the same. They’re both chipped and imperfect but they still keep water cold. Sometimes I think about getting another one but it seems impractical for a multitude of reasons

I went on a two week trip around Europe, seven different countries, and I brought a capsule wardrobe made up of things I already owned. I got new water resistant boots and borrowed a large purse from my mom for my camera. It just struck me that I didn't even think to buy new stuff. This was Jan 2020

I’ve had my second gen AirPods for almost 4 years. I’ve accidentally washed and dried them in the washer a couple of times and they still work. For me they are pretty good quality

I worked in selling University textbooks and it's always recommended to buy them only if you really are going to use it and from other places such as the marketplace or libraries or bookshops not from the University store as University stores tend to higher the prices and at least where I worked higher the prices per semester only order what the professors order. I have heard many stories of professors not even using the textbooks so it's best to not be impulsive and think outside of the box on what materials you actually need.
Check your glasses, there should be small screws on the side of the frame. That’s how they insert the lenses. What a scam. I’m from France, I never heard of frames being so fragile you can’t change the lenses. When we need to update lenses, the optician shop orders custom made lenses and once they receive it, they cut it to fit your frames. You leave your glasses for 1h and it’s installed.
The older lenses and glasses are also collected for associations.
I don’t expect my daughter to afford a diamond bracelet or necklace…she doesn’t have a job after all…
I don't use headphones, I use £10 cheap headphones. My ears are too tiny for earbuds lol.The Stanley cup is an American thing, though I hear it's the ideal thug weapon. In England we are not allowed to carry knives or guns, only use what happens to be on our person....I heard in a RUclips story that a Stanley cup caused a head injury so I will be buying it for self defence. It sounds ideal.
As someone who went to a uk uni and lived in student halls 2/3 years, as well as worked in accom a few times, the US system is mad to me. I feel like i had maybe near a month after my last exam before move out so i had loads of time to plan. The furniture thing is crazy too, we weren't allowed to bring furniture but the uni put donation boxes in our flats for things like cookware, as well as offering discounted storage rates. Of course things still got chucked but i think that helped a lot

Our uni campus was shared between two universities and students shared the halls of residence.
As a student union, we set up two reuse/recycle stations towards the end of term - one at halls and one at the uni reception. Students could donate anything and we would then sort the items for reuse by students or donation to charity shops or for clothes swap.
The reuse items were displayed in the main common room at the start of term. As most students anf their parents explore the halls first before going to buy whats needed, it was a good way to get rid of pots, pans, plates, lamps and cutlery in the first few weeks. Also available at the freshers fair for those living off campus or returning after summer holidays.
The union then had open office on Wednesday lunchtime where people could drop buy to see what was still available throughout the year.
I don't know if this still runs, but it was pretty successful the 1st couple years.
This year I gave my mother for mother's day a second-hand silk scarf. I'm feeling kind of weird about it because I feel like I went cheap... But I packed it nicely and spent some time to choose one I think she'd like and is 100% silk. What do you think about it? Do you give second-hand gifts? I wouldn't do that if it was some official thing but my mum is long time second-hand user and can appreciate simple things in life.

This was our first year not traditionally celebrating Mother’s and Father’s Day. For Mother’s Day we went roller skating as a family and they made me dinner. Father’s Day we went on a “role play”bike ride (my husband loves DnD so each stop was part of the adventure where he was given a note from our kids). It was so nice to not have another thing I have to find a home for and not worry about the expense of a gift. It’s our new tradition.

I was also a college RA and my first year I watched everyone throw stuff away, my second year I advocated for an end of year swap meet of sorts and had goodwill pick up the rest, unfortunately my last year as an RA was when COVID hit and everyone threw everything away again. I wanted to cry.
How ridiculous things have gotten in terms of consumerism is beyond me. The number of problems we could solve if we thought more about everyone's well-being rather than profits is huge and humanity as a whole would truly progress (not talking about technology here).
I often lurk on this sub Reddit too. While I'm glad to find like-minded people, the way capitalism still rules our lives despite most people in power knowing we're going to crash and burn greatly saddens me. Great video by the way. I think the more we talk about these issues, the more the message can spread. So thank you!
My printer came from the dumpster in the college town I live in. Most of our furniture, too. Dressers, bookshelves, storage, desks.
I got my airpods as a christmas gift back in 2019 and I still have the same pair, going strong. I'm sure the battery life is shorter than it used to be, but each pod can last me about four hours, so eight hours between the two if I switch them out to charge in between, which I do if I need them for a full work day. no clue how long the case would last. I 'wore it down' only when I briefly didn't use them for a few months. really interesting to hear that they technically weren't designed to last until 2023

My AirPods have lasted me since 2020, and they are still in good condition. If you take care of your things they do last longer.

13:52 I’d prefer that level of coordination. It’s hard moving out during quiet hours with a physical disability and nobody but my mother, who is aging, to help me. I prefer having people available to help and the ability to drop things without guilt.

Tbh I think you can make a case for owning several water bottles as long as you really use them. I have three. One small one for smaller bags, one bigger one I used to take to school, work and on holidays and after 7 years I know got a third one that’s bigger and lighter for hiking.
I think the best way to go about purchasing multiple of the same thing is to get only one at first and then live with it for a couple of months until you have good arguments to get another one.
My university had areas set up on campus for you to leave the stuff you don't want at the end of the school year, and at the start of the next one students can "shop" those items for free. So essentially the "furniture libraries" mentioned in that reddit comment, and it was nice that it was set up by the school itself and not some third party so the dropoff areas were right outside the dorms and you didn't even have to think about it. I don't know why all schools don't do this!!
Also, my school offered rentals of a microwave and minifridge that was cheaper than you buying them new. Bonus, you didn't have to move these in or out of your dorm room, the cleaners or whoever at the school take care of them which is soo convenient for anyone who wouldn't need these appliances when they move back home. Only cons were that this was only available if you lived in dorms, so if you wanted to get off-campus housing you would have to buy your own, and if you rented every year it would be more expensive than if you just bought at the start. Personally I thought the convenience and environmental factor was a fair trade-off for the price.

It's frustrating when the weight of sustainability is put on individuals when corporations don't support those individuals trying to do their best. E.g. in the case of reusing frames.
young people/college students and furniture is so depressing by and large. more people shop second hand than every, but living by a college campus (and being young myself) the waste i see if demoralizing. rugs, shelving units, dressers, couches, mattresses, etc. just thrown out every year. i made the conscious choice entering adulthood to not buy new furniture if i could help it bc until you’re much older no housing is permanent enough to get something specially produced for you. all of my furniture is second hand and every two years re-donate most of it while moving. most other people ik buy it new, then throw it out to the landfill. i wish there were a “furniture library” for people in early adulthood in general. there’s enough furniture on this planet already :(
i just graduated and my college had a rental system for tech. the library had computers that were open to use for anyone (with some areas locked to students from specific classes - e.g. a whole section for maths/english, a whole section for third/fourth years, etc) but also laptops that could be rented out the entire year. i don't know how much they cost, but from what i gathered it seemed to be pretty cheap so long as you didn't break them, kept them relatively clean, and handed them back in at the end of the year so they could wipe the memory card. the more i think about this the more i wonder if it's a regional thing, since my high school did the same thing - i live in england, for reference.
I go to a college that has something like a furniture library; our rooms are pre-furnished so it’s mostly clothing/cookware etc., but it’s the same principle, and we do it on a donation system where there’s no deposit or anything to take an item for yourself. There is probably still some wastage because there’s just such a large quantity of items, but it’s so much better than having no system in place. I had no idea it was an unusual thing to have
My local college has pick up day where they place it outside and many people pick up furniture for free.

The USB-C ports can do a lot of stuff.
Like, I have a 7-in-1 swiss army knife of a thing, with USB ports, and a full size HDMI out, so I can plug my phone into any TV, Or use wired controllers or plug hard drives into the phone to move videos over without a PC.
So you kind of don't "need" a built in headphone jack these days.
As somebody with severe anxiety over losing luggage, I could honestly see buying new clothes for a trip. But I would probably just go to Walmart and still bring some of my less favorites i already have, and I would probably keep the clothes after or give them to someone or donate them or upcycle them or something. I get it but not in the "my new fits are costing more than the trip" way

Ohio State collected donations at move out and then in the fall had a huge garage sale! I’m sure there was still so much waste, but it was a good deal for everyone.

Hi, love the video, just want to comment on the liners, some people (like myself) use things like toast bags which prevent crumbs in the toaster because I have coeliac and mine are reusable but not all are, some people use things for good reasons, ik it's kinda mentioned in the video but I wanted to highlight it because these products can be put to good use
The glasses thing surprises me! I‘ve had glasses for 30 years now and the shop where I get them always offer to just change the lenses instead of selling me new frames. Unless I want something new. It‘s always much cheaper.
