One of the few remaining relics of the Aztec civilization may be found inside the boundaries of Mexico City, which is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Xochimilco is comprised of a massive network of canals and little manmade islands known as chinampas. These chinampas are where the residents live and have their crops grown.
Located deep inside the heart of Xochimilco, there is a chinampa that contains a few modest cottages, but they are overwhelmed by hundreds of dolls that have been disfigured and are rotting.
The Island of the Dolls, also known as La Isla de las Muñecas, is the location where the greatest collection of haunted dolls available anywhere in the world can be found.
However, it is possible that the only item that is actually haunted in this tale is the guy who lived there, a recluse by the name of Don Julian Santana Barrera. According to the legend, he was purportedly haunted by the soul of a girl who had drowned.
Before Don Julian arrived there in the 1950s, it was not known as the Island of the Dolls; nevertheless, it became recognized as such shortly after, when dolls began to magically materialize on the island.
A little girl is said to have tragically perished in the canal's water lilies decades before his arrival, according to a legend that has been passed down through the generations.
It was Don Julian who said that he had heard the girl yelling from beyond the grave, "I want my doll." In point of fact, he discovered a doll close to the location where her corpse was said to have been discovered. He then proceeded to hang the doll on a tree, as if to make a sacrifice to the ghost of the little girl.
Don Julian developed a fixation on her and was plagued by her presence.
After that, he said that each time he walked outdoors, he found fresh dolls that were hung up from trees. Not all of them were totally whole however; some of them had their heads severed, while others had their bodies mutilated.
