    . Flying seaplanes in Alaska has been a lot of fun. It's been too long coming, 10 years almost, and now I'm just moments away from my checkride. But first, we need to do a mock checkride and see if I'm up to snuff on all the landings, takeoffs, taxi, docking, and so on. There's a lot to cover, and I'll be doing my checkride essentially right after this flight.
    Sarah takes me through many of the seaplane maneuvers for the checkride -- step taxi, step turns, normal takeoff and landing, glassy water landings, confined approach and landing, docking, and so on.
    There's a lot involved in this 3 day seaplane course. It's been a really great time at Alaska Floats and Skis in Talkeetna. I was also grateful to bring my family. Having them there made the experience extra special. Certainly didn't get to spend as much time as I would have wanted studying and things like that, but it worked out and enjoyed it.

    As a CFI, CFII, MEI, Gold Seal&NAFI master CFI with over 6,000 hours of dual given an 12K hours total time, one thing I can tell you for sure, when a CFI touches the controls on your first landing while doing a mock check ride, either you are not ready for you check ride (practical text) or you have a very inexperienced instructor. Best i can tell from this video is that the instructor needs to learn a few things. It doesn not convey confidence in a student if on a mock checkride an instructor puts their hands on the control without saying anything like "more back pressur". If I was flying that plane s her "student" and she touched the controls without giving verbal instructions, we would have taxied to a safe spot and have a talk.

    I am confused, is there a difference between private and commercial on the check ride? right now I am a private and soon to be commercial and I want to add on a sea plane rating but I want to end up with a commercial airplane single engine sea. Is it one check ride or two check rides?

    First rise, second rise … what are this? 🤔

    • @j3nn3s
      @j3nn3s 3 года назад +1

      These are callouts for the different stages when the plane is still behaving like a boat. I don't know the exact English terms, but before the first rise the plane plows through the water like a trawler, first rise is the transition to gliding (still in boat terms). In boat terms, this is when a gliding boat has actually the biggest drag, that's why you keep accelerating. After the second rise, the floats barely touch the surface of the water, drag reduces drastically. That's why in boating you can then reduce power. In a seaplane you have to reduce power if you don't want to accidentally lift off already. Nonetheless the whole process is explained in the video series, though more from an aviation point of view - which shouldn't be surprising as this is an aviation channel after all.

    • @ZeroThreeDelta
      @ZeroThreeDelta 3 года назад +1

      @@j3nn3s I had a feeling it was something like that. Thanks for the explanation.

    Four problems...1. large open mug of coffee. 2. Demonstrated by an "instructor". 3. PIC lets it slid. 4. Post video. Some viewers will come away with the impression that this is "OK". I've flown with many pilots who cut their teeth on back country flying. ALL were excellent aviators. None of them would do what she did.

    • @hattrick2219
      @hattrick2219 3 года назад

      @@angleofattack Interesting response. I take my flying seriously thanks to some incredible instructors who believed flying was serious business. NTSB files are full of "aviators" who thought differently.
