to respond to your question about her writing, Taylor writes the vast majority of her music and she’s involved in the writing of every song she puts out. in most cases, she has most of the lyrics done when she walks in the studio and then her co-writers and her will make tweaks here and there. when she put out her first 2 albums, people in the industry speculated about her involvement in the writing of her music and claimed there was no way she, at such a young age, could write that much and that well. so with her 3rd album ‘Speak Now’ she wrote every single song on her own without any co-writers.

Didn't most rock stars of the past write music at a young age though? I don't think "she writes her own music" is enough for all the accolades that she gets. What am I missing about her music? I love great songwriting. I love Patty Griffin, Maria Mckee, Karen Peris, Shawn Colvin and I am not against good pop music. I love George Michael, early Madonna, Janet Jackson. I just haven't been convinced yet that Taylor Swift is that great or even good of an artist. Name me one of her songs that blows your mind?

@@igloozoo3771 Preferences in writing are hugely different between person to person, and depend on everything from personal taste to experiences to character, but for me 'epiphany' from folklore is the best-written song I've ever heard from any artist, other highlights are Anti-Hero, Mastermind and You're on your own Kid (although I'd recommend listening to Midnights as a whole as it's necessary to do so to understand these songs), as others have said, all of folklore and evermore have fantastic writing, some highlights for me beside epiphany are, champagne problems, dorothea, ivy, tolerate it, happiness.

Taylor has always had prolific and diaristic songwriting. Her first job was a staff writer (maybe 13 or 14) for a Nashville record label after school and that’s where she was able to get even better at songwriting before she released her debut. They even offered her a deal, but they wouldn’t let her write her own songs, so she declined. (I don’t remember the exact details, so I might have gotten something slightly wrong) As others have said, Speak Now is a perfect example of her fighting back when people said there was no way she was pulling enough weight in the studio. She solo wrote every song and you can tell with how long the songs are and how honest and detailed the writing is (which didn’t help the public’s perception of her since she didn’t censor anything)
There are tons of videos and voice memos of her explaining her writing process and how she comes up with ideas and then goes into the studio to polish them off. Her reputation making of a song on RUclips is a good video series if you’re interested. And there are other videos available too and her 1989 session explaining the whole album.
For your last point, I do agree that they both have contributed and shaped the industry. From what I’ve seen, Taylor has done more while Kanye talks without actually taking action. Because of how long Taylor has wanted to own her music (years behind the scenes from around 1989 we think), she also has championed for artists to own their own work. She withheld her music, which was the most popular at that time, from both Apple and Spotify since they were not compensating artists fairly. And her deal with republic and umg stipulated for artists to get a stake in Spotify shares nonrecuperable. They tried to be friends twice, but both Kanye and Kim decided to burn bridges and tarnish her public image in order to raise theirs instead of them working together to make it even bigger. It would have been cool, and we saw that Taylor really wanted that, but she wouldn’t ever trust them again. (Which is fair, I wouldn’t either)

As someone who was only familiar with two tracks from this album "Love Story" and "You Belong With Me" when they were initially released ("Lover" was the first Swift album I listened to from start to finish and the first one I knew more than four songs from) I got a brief taste of what "Fearless (Taylor's Version") really is; a nostalgia trip for the fans who grew up with Taylor (albeit with far better vocal performances and production; the term "polished juvenilia" is therefore entirely spot on and accurate). After the lyrical masterpieces that are "evermore" and "folklore" (in terms of maturity; even "Lover" and "reputation" to a certain extent) the lyrics of her sophomore album appear so juvenile in comparison. AND WHY SHOULDN'T THEY? THEY WERE LITERALLY WRITTEN BY A FRIGGIN' TEENAGER (however still pretty good for a teenager)! It's also interesting to see how much the culture has shifted (along with Swift) regarding some of the content since 2008; specifically on the tracks :Fifteen" and "You Belong with Me" (which along with P!nk's "Stupid Girls" and even Taylor's 2010 song "Better Than Revenge") which (although good musically), had they been released now, people would have accused Swift of a self-righteous prudishness at best, or slut-shaming at worst (whereas Taylor's now writing about "illicit affairs" and "wanting to know that body like it's mine"). I think it also offers a great glimpse in Swift's transformation from being marketed as a wholesome, clean-cut, Christian, southern (though she's from Pennsylvania), teenage country music singer to who she is today. Still it's not fair to judge Swift today from what she wrote as a teenager. This album is fundamentally an interesting time capsule, much like Lorde's 2013 "Pure Heroine" and Billie Eilish's 2019 "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" which are also great examples that show the progression of the female teenager experience over time. And I feel a lot of her younger fans who are teenagers will also gravitate to that material.
As an aside, it's crazy to note that Swift and Drake are the only two artists who were big in the 2000s who seem to still be pop culturally relevant (on the massive scale that they are) into the 2020s (Taylor literally has an AOTY Grammy in the straight decades). And I agree, whereas most artists chase trends, Kanye and Taylor are the only artists who are not afraid to take risks and re-invent themselves every record (see Taylor's transition to pop, "reputation," and "folkore" and "evermore;). Yes, you could argue that "Lover" was Taylor trying to hard to get back in the Grammys good books (after the panning of "reputation"; hinted at in the Netflix doc "Miss Americana") but with "folklore" and "evermore" hopefully she's proven to herself that she can get the accolades without consciously trying to (interesting to note Kanye also won a Grammy for Gospel alum this year despite publicly urinating on one of his previous awards which was symbolic; them both winning in the same year after making music that were huge departures from what people were used to).
Edit: in regards to the co-writes, in terms of "folkmore" (as you put it) she wrote the lyrics but the music was written for her by her producers. I think for most of her co-writes, it's her co-writers adding subtle lyrical suggestions to words she's already written (which for the 21st century) is as close to single authorship of pop music as you're as close to getting (as opposed to the six-plus co-writers on songs on the recent Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato albums).

Nice, I do like your reviews. Her Vault songs of course are juvenile, she wrote them when she was a teenager (most likely way before 18, but some at age 18) and produced by Jack and Aaron. I love it. I didn’t know this album. Obviously I knew Love Story and You Belong With Me, but I hadn’t heard any other song on this album. I listened to it once during this past year. But, I don’t have that attachment to this album like many people do, and to the songs. I didn’t listen to her then. But. It was my least favorite, even her first album I like better. But I listened to this new version with open ears and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her vocals are more mature, her voice has deepened and has a fullness to it, and control that she didn’t have at age 18. I like this version and this older Taylor.
She writes almost all herself. Back then she was a teenager and the label had her a co-writer. But, they are her songs, her words and emotions and melodies. With folklore in quarantine she wrote differently than usual. She toplined most of it. She had done that before, but it’s not her usual way of writing. That’s why Aaron is so predominant on the record. Evermore was a combination of topline and working in the studio. The reason why those 6 songs feel like 2008 instead of now is because they are supposed to, written back then, she wanted them to sound like they should fit in the album of 2008. The word about being a movie, or the line about buying a farm, she writes this before she was superstar. That’s where her mind was age 16-18.
As for Kanye. Yes, I have to appreciate art and the artists that produce it even if I don’t care for it, I can appreciate the art that is /or has been created. And I do believe they these two artists use their platform to help the industry and the future of artists’ work. Although, Kanye has been such a insincere and destructive person towards Taylor, not even the song, but the edited tape, the list goes on. Knowing the things he has done to her, I cannot think that any tweet or interview about helping others is any way sincere. I’m sure there are people who see that he has actually done some good for others, and I hope that is true, but he hadn’t done anything but try to ruin Taylor. I appreciate his art and hope he makes some strides to help the industry, but making tweets really isn’t helping anyone except to promote himself, unless he takes action in a positive way. I have my own theories behind why Kanye did what he did to her (edited tape) but that’s another discussion. I hope he continues to make music and art, but he needs to stay away from her. If I were her, I’d definitely have a restraining order.

i guess i don't agree with Kanye doing something for other artists since being mad on the internet doesn't do much. But I absolutely agree with everything else on your hot takes, i think they are many of us who didn't saw the greatness of her music back then, but happy to be doing this now with folkmore opening our eyes to see what she has been doing all these years.

I run in circles that scoff at me being a "Swiftie" but they just don't understand how it was being a young woman, one year younger than her, realizing okay the chorus is cheesy but these verses are truly worth the listen as a former emo kid who found indie and never looked back. I would not say that it is quite imperceptibly similar. I can definitely point to some specific things (it especially shows up in the vocal technique, on some of the things she couldn't quite nail the first time (like the high notes on Untouchable, which were okay then, but are much better supported now)). But it is extremely similar, yeah. When I listened to it, right after its release, I was just laying on the floor, delighting in all the small technical improvements that really did breathe new life into it, like watching one of those videos where an art conservator removes the old, yellowed varnish from a Renaissance painting. I was so happy that I fully deleted the original version from my phone.

For clarity- Including Keith Urban on this album was NOT about putting someone on for attn/marketing (this is where Taylor’s history is impt); Fearless was Taylor’s second album and Keith asked Taylor to be his opening act on tour to help her promote Fearless. The have a lot of great memories together about that time in her life. So bringing Keith onto the album is nostalgic (just like she was being re-recording it). Also, this is a huge power move but not for why you mentioned (or thought), but because her old label had a pretty big thumb on Nashville music and most country artists wanted to stay out of the whole Taylor/Scott-Scooter/rerecord mess ‘on record’ even if they quietly were supporting her. Keith, coming out on not just one but two songs, as one of the biggest country artists, he goes on record where he sits on this issue. I like Keith and became a fan of his on his 2nd album (he really is best guitarist in country, he really is rock with a hint of country), so I was thrilled to see him on there from both the nostalgic aspect as well as the political power standpoint.

Hello Professor, just want you to know that Taylor DID write all of her songs on her album (featuring except one cover song on Fearless: Untouchable). PLUS, her third album, Speak Now, was written all by herself without any co-writers. She wrote it during her Fearless tour (circa 2009-2010). Amazing, don’t u think? It’s so funny that there are still some people think that Taylor didn’t write her own musics/songs while there’s a fact that she rejected to do songs/album project from one big record label in Nashville back when she was 14 just because some people in that record label wanted her to sing other people’s song, not her own song. She refused to do that and left that label. She wanted to write her own songs & creating her own musics that’s why she chose that goddamn BMR as her first record label to deal with. Keep it in ur memory, Professor. So whenever you listen to her albums next time, you’re gonna tell ur self that “Taylor wrote this!” & it’s gonna spin around ur mind.

I appreciated your perspective. A couple of comments though. 1. Taylor will never speak to Kanye again, I feel that is a certainty. 2. I believe that Taylor writes most of her songs, and she has said in interviews that the way the compensation system in music is that many producers will not work with you unless they get a co-writing credit on a song, so there's that. 3. Unfortunately even though Taylor is sticking it to the master rights holders of her old music, its not Scooter Braun anymore, he made out like a bandit buying Big Machine label, and then selling Taylor's catalogue alone for a hefty profit to Shamrock Holdings, they are the ones who will be losing big time. But i do enjoy the positive things you say about Taylor.

I can take my personal feelings of Kanye out and say that. I also agree with you when you say Taylor didnt just talk, she did it. Such a brave thing to do and thats where Kanye loses me. Is he really this great influence, he talks yeah and he yells, yeah now is the time to put up or shut up. Taylor has blown the doors off, does Kanye burst through with her. Maybe not as a friendly ally (I dont think Taylor has it in her to forgive him for what he and Kim did) but as a ally going against a common enemy, a sort of enemy of my enemy thing. Who knows if that would come to pass but I do know as a swiftie I am 110% proud and respect Taylor for what she is doing here.

Taylor and Kanye will never work together because he doesn’t respect her. He’s proved that several times. Even when they publicly made up he did it just to use her for clout because he immediately backstabbed her. The full video of their phone call shows that, he calls to ask her to promote a song where he says she owes him sex. She also says she was afraid the lyric would be him calling her a “dumb bitch” and then he proceeds to add “I made that bitch famous” after she shared that concern. The lack of respect is absolutely wild. I’m not gonna talk about his talent or artistry but two people can’t work well together if there isn’t mutual respect and he’s absolutely destroyed any possibility of that when she was willing to bury the hatchet.

You're lucky you don't know about the Taylor-Kanye situation. I love Taylor but I know too much, I wish I could forget

I believe he considers the suggestions that people give, though he's said he only reviews music that he likes, so there's of course no guarantee he'll take the suggestion.

Kayne needs to get help before I can take anything he says serious but in that fact that he talks about it sure the only mainstream artist talking about it.

Fun fact: Taylor’s fans, Swifties, gave the idea to re-record all of her six older albums and swifties voted for it. Taylor listened to what her fans wanted. That was the power of artist & fandom. 💪 I feel so proud to be one of the swifties. 🥲💖✨
