I was a Boy Scout back in the 70's and just hit 60 last year. My dad was a Scout back in the 30's and used to engage me with stories of how they were sent out each kid with half a shelter and they would team up much like the Army would and two scouts would work together to make an improvised A-frame shelter. I also remember my dad teaching me how to tie my standard knots like the square and bowline as a kid. and YES, I learned infinitely more from my dad than I did from my troop leaders. Thanks Pop! Thanks again Shawn! Bill Doyle
I prefer your updated method for securing the truckers knot on a ridgeline. The method you demonstrated recently where the cordage is wrapped twice inside the loop so it bites down on itself and allows an easily addition of a quick release. Super secure ridgeline system! My favorite knot videos on RUclips. One million subs lets go!
I keep comin' back to your style of presentation, Corporal... this is a good earlier take on some basic concepts I had previously missed when I first discovered your YT channel 18 months or so back. It's kind of a shame the 'Boy Scout' leaders I had in the later 80s as I approached my 'tweenage' years were pretty poor; considering my Dad died when was 7. Whilst I didn't learn that much from the local Scout troop; the curiosity for better bush & camp craft still remains.. as my personal 50 year milestone approaches.
On behalf of Scouting I apologize. I have learned so much in four months on virus lockdown and with Scouts on hold. With Corp's videos I will do better.
When ever I want to know how to do something in survival or bushcraft I search it in your channel first because I know that after watching just one of your vids on the subject I will be able to do the task, simply the best survival bushcraft instruction available in my opinion, thankyou and keep up the good work and saving us all from wasting our time watching 10 videos of others on the same subject because none of them put the time or effort in to properly explain the steps in clear methodical way 👍🏻
Love your videos. With two half hitches-it was invaluable to know each end comes out facing a different direction. Best knot instruction shows how to tell it is done right or wrong. I never even got the square knot until someone taught me how to tell if knot was done right.
I have seen "how to" pictures with arrows and step one, two, three etc. of these knots but your description, words along with actual hands making the knots makes learning them much easier. Once I made the knots several times my hands remembered the process. Thanks!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. During COVID19 shut down. I decided to use my time to learn things, I’ve always wanted to do. Knots for camping is one of them. There are a lot of knot instructors on YT. Yours are the easiest to see & follow. I made what call a knot tree and sometimes have to stop, rewatch etc. Us gals appreciate it!😁
Learnt all my knots in no time at all with your help I actually enjoy setting aside n hour in the house practicing them all God bless you my freind ❤️🙏
Sir, this was very helpful. Great video for an absolute beginner like me. I've been looking at tons of videos to learn and yours has been the clearest and most concise. Thank you!
Very cool video. I’ve been a fan for a while but I just stumbled on this one. I just seen a video of a Swiss dude doing a similar one recently. But yours is much better as you show more ways to use them. And with that your obviously a Toggle Mac from way back. Thanks!
Did a wild and woolly storm camp. (On purpose) Knew 5 knots thanks to you guys. Now will practice these 3. Getting there! Ps i have 4wd and tent. Not alpha like you guys. Haha
Great presentation of skills as always, but personally I'm a Truckerhitch addict. I don't get to do Camping a lot, but there's always plenty of stuff to fix somewhere at work :)
Interesting that you tie your taught line differently than I do. I tried your way, and the result was the same but faster with less fiddling at the end to get it snug. Thanks for that. Also, to avoid a potentially damaging cinching effect to the tarp, I just tie a bowline to it, rather than further cinching that bowline down on the tarp grommet /material.
I'm an amatuer I just use the plastic tensioners that came with my rain fly 😆 I want to learn all the different types of knots tho, would be really usefull
Some good information and some great knots to know. One thing to consider, I put my fixed knots at my stakes and my adjustable knots at my grommet. This way if the cordage relaxes and needs tightening, I can just reach my arms out from under my tarp and adjust without having to walk to my stake to adjust. This will keep you dryer if it's raining out.
Sempre volto aqui pra relembrar os meus conhecimentos com você. Obrigada por me ajudar a fazer os nós com cordas. Aprendi muito com você. Deus abençoe sua vida 🙏🇧🇷🙏
Thanks for another Great video. Any thoughts on using a double (or triple) fisherman's knot to tension around the stake instead of the taught line hitch?
Thank you so dog on much for this video. It showed exactly what I needed. A few options for a very simple and effective way to tighten down a tarp to an anchor point. 10/10 video. Again, thank you sir
Hello Cpl Kelly. I recently found your channel and after watching many of your videos I have come to believe that you are a trustworthy source for good information. I am hoping you can help me. I need to make a quick deploy lean-to type structure that has some height inside. It does not need to reach the ground and I have limited space considering the height needed. Around 9 feet from the structure out is what I have to work with but I need at least 6 feet in height at the short end. I don't need all of that space (the 9 feet out) but I do need most of it. I already have the top figured out (it will be against a building, ridgeline attached to eye bolts). I don't have anything to attach it to on the other end or space to run long guy lines. The only thing I can come up with is to put in poles to attach to at the lower end. Don't want to do anything permanent so I was thinking poles in concrete buckets with guy lines at an extreme downward angle but I don't think physics would be my friend there. They would only make it out a couple feet before hitting the property line. The lean-to idea was the best I could come up with as I have NO way to run guy lines in the other direction towards the building if I made a shelter with a center ridgeline. This does need to be something I can put up and take down when the rain starts and stops. There's just no getting around that part. I am planning on snake skins for the top where the ridgeline is for fast storage and deloyment as this will be used over and over in the same spot this fall. This is my partial working plan, do you have any suggestions for it or better ideas? Thank you for your time and any help you can give! *edit* I have not watched all of your videos so if you have covered something similar already will you point me in that direction? Thanks. ~Matt
Do you have a suggested length of cordage for the guy lines. I know this might sound like a dumb question, just wanted to know your thoughts. Just wondering if I should go ahead and make them prior to going into the field or if the situation will dictate.
Okay, maybe you’ve addressed this, but what makes one of your skills videos “outstanding” vs “good to go”? I have watched all of them, and can not determine a pattern. Asking for myself. Thanks, I’ll hang up and take your answer off the air.
I know this is an old video so you might not see this, but due to Bankline being much lighter I'm thinking about using No 12 Bankline to replace the guy-lines on my tent/shelter in the future. Do these knots and techniques work with No 12 Bankline? (as in, sliding and reusing) Thanks!
Great vids! It's great to see real survival stuff as opposed to some of these that even take stoves with them! But how did you get that ridge line so straight? There was no sag in it at all yet the anchors of the ridge lines were above the level of the tarp.
I only love knot because of you. Never been able to remember any. Now I use all your hitch and knot for something every week and teaching them to kids

That short part about the trucker's hitch is the best tute on youtube IMO! The truckers hitch is my personal favorite !

Your demonstration style is second to none
EXCELLANT!! For some reason I love the look of canvas. Maybe it's the old school in me. Thanks Corporal.
Superb instruction, sir.
I really appreciate your no-nonesense style. Thankyou.

Knots and hitches allowing tension to be applied are god's greatest gift to mankind
that WAS outstanding. thanks Corporal. my shelter system has mirrored yours and evolves with each new video. thank you!!!
Ive used these knots many times, like your instruction and your videos! I'm subscribing, I'm a fan. Thanks for your service.

Another fine video .
failed for years trying to invent on the job knots like you successfully have now taught so simple...

Brought me back to Scouts.
Very instructional vid

Thank you
Thank you.
Thanks Amigo
That's the video I was looking for.
Will it work in a plastic tarp or the grommet will tear when it is windy? Please suggest!
lo siento no hablo inglés que tarp es Ese? donde se puede Comprar? gracias

Any tips on a quick connect guy line system? Average length of cordage to use for use with a hammock?
Gutes Video
Guy-lines imply the existence of girl-lines

Yes Sir.......
Thank you........Sir.
Looks like a full on canvas TARP tarp. Do you carry that one on trips , or is it just for videos
👍👍👍 👏 .. Alan in 🇨🇱

The tension from the guy lines straightens out the ridgeline.
👍
Hey Corporal, what was your M.O.S.? Were you a grunt?
So who ithe person named "guy" and why was it named afterr him?
