@@Farrister Any chance of an update? To me that is the selling point. Leaving the ability to haul a Roc aside, when cargo elevators are in and the tractor beam has been completely worked through; once the bed is down the pilot can move it all aboard from the comfort of the cockpit fuel up and be on the way to the next stop with 2 -3 times the cargo of some of the other starters with the better capacity.

I have quite a different impression of the nomad, which I fell in love with as soon as I got my hands on it. Its versatility makes it useful far beyond starter range, and it definitely punches above its class in pretty much every category. No other starter ship has 24SCU of cargo space or can carry a small vehicle. If one is especially into Roc mining, this is a great way to grind up from the get-go if you have both vehicles. I find the Roc easier to drive into the bed of the Nomad than the back of a cutty. It's zippy, handles amazingly well and swapping out the S2 guns for fixed S3 gives it a lot more firepower too. 3 S1 shield generators also makes it much more tanky and forgiving. You may not win many dogfights against tougher opponents, but you stand a good chance of getting away from one. It's a unique ship and a great offering for the price. Oh - and you forgot to mention it now has a vehicle mounted tractor beam. (at least I think you forgot, or I missed your mention of it). It is the only starter ship (I think) to have one.

a few things from a seasoned nomad enjoyer ( i ccu`ed from my titan when the nomad was released). I agree that the price is a little steep but thats the reason why it often gets overlooked. I would spend the aeuc on an atlas qt drive tho, it significantly cuts down on traveltimes while also being the most efficient small qt drive, i recommend any s1 pilot get that qt drive.
I got my nomad to kickstart my in game progression after a wipe, the cargo capacity and the ability to haul a roc will get me enough auec to buy a dedicated industry-type ship to increase my eranings.
You overlooked one crucial feature of the nomad in 3.21, it gets a small tractorbeam mounted over the cargobay. this is a significant advantage for loading cargo, you dont even have to leave your ship to pick up reclaimed salvage from a friend who is hullscraping.

My most recommended starter ship if you only want to buy one especially if it's on sale, recently it was in the low $70s. That ability to rent a ROC is such a game changer. You could very easily save for bigger, better ships with that as your starting point. It's also got a tractor beam on the back that should be quite handy.

    • @Cjorss
      @Cjorss 11 месяцев назад

@PlayerSlotAvailable Yeah, probably not the best thing as your only ship. It's super cool though. But where it really shines is in one shotting extreme risk bounty targets. Your first problem is that it's not a good dog fighter, so it will be a long and profitless journey as you build reputation. Your second problem is that we don't know if it will be viable at soloing those extreme bounties at release. You might have to team up with others to be viable. Your third issue is that the insurance claim timer is pretty slow if it's your only option. Assuming you can melt the Eclipse for $300 you might want to get a few ships with that money that will give you more options.

Quicker and easier to load ROC on and off (especially with Tractor beam. It’s a good ship and will last you longer than most other starters gameplay loop wise. But everyone has their preferences. The Nomad is the best ship for ROC mining because It's easy to maneuver, has great visibility, and it is super easy to land in hard uneven areas. These advantages make it even better than the Cuttie for ROC mining. This means you will still have a use for the Nomad even after you outgrown it in your fleet. Finally. A streamer who does the Nomad some justice.
Just a few notes. The components are in the roof of the ship. That rear section is presumably the engineering access of some kind. Also, as soon as you enter the doors, there are weapon racks, one on the left, another on the right under the red lights JUST as you enter the door. There is also another plant currently bugged. That white capsule on the shelf to the rear was a BEAUTIFUL blue Bonsai looking alien tree. I miss it dearly.
Lastly, as mentioned by others, the Tractor beam REALLY puts the Nomad far above other ships above and below its price point. This ship is very much well-rounded and has an arguably better entry for more gameplay loops than any other ship sub 100$. The value of that tractor beam cannot be understated, allowing self-loading of cargo without the necessity of moving seats or needing a co-pilot (a feature no other ship at this time has.)
While the game package price is to be considered as a starter, I would argue that the overall breadth of introduction to Star Citizen as a whole is a value that no other ship can offer at this level. While you mentioned that you wouldn't change much about the ship loadout, it's important to also note that the ship has much greater potential when fully kitted out as knowledge of gameplay mechanics improve, another valuable asset to new citizen.
Overall, thank you for reviewing the Nomad, it receives a lot of undue hate for its hover gear and its uncommon looks. But the only ships with better value IMO are the Reliant series, simply due to their "mini-modularity."

I really love the Nomad, it's the best all rounder of all the starter ships. As you said, you can do everything with it.
If you're ROC mining, you can land virtually anywhere thanks to the hover landing gear.
The gun racks on either side of the entry door are perfectly placed for when we can no longer have weapons equipped in the pilot seat.

Straight off the bat, Consolidated Outland is my favorite manufacturer, so I'm going to be bias. lol. I think the Nomad is the best STARTER ship in the game (so far). Is it AMAZING at any one task? Not particularly. It's a classic "Jack of All Trades", it does most things, relatively well, but no one game loop amazingly well. As you've said, it's a great ship for people who want to test the different game loops and work out what things they like doing, because the Nomad can do pretty everything (with vehicle support). If I remember correctly the Nomad also is another example of alien/human hybrid tech. Silas Koerner (the CEO of the company) likes experimenting with different tech, when he's designing the ships. We DEFINITELY need more CO ships/vehicles. Alien tech or human tech. The more the better. Cheers for the review, Farrister, another solid video. Peace.

Strictly as a *starter*, I think the vehicle transport capability (particularly that little miner) is the feature that gives the Nomad value. I can see it being popular though; I suspect the Avenger and Nomad will make up the bulk of game package recommendations under $100 and these two ships will most likely be over-represented in the wider game compared to everything under $100 except maybe Auroras (and I think these will be the first ships people step up from Auroras into). For someone that has a few ships or more, I don't think it has much value. As part of a single-ship or two-ship game start, I think it'll pull its weight as well as anyone could expect a starter ship to.

My regret and forlorn lament is that i cannot, at current, upgrade its components so that it can become viable among the next teir All-Arounders and grow with me enough to continue using it as my needs grow just a tiny bit.
This does not however, prevent me from always returning to using it when I get that unmistakable twinge in my gut for something cozy, comfortable, fun, and familiar.

I CCU'd to Nomad last year from an Origin 135c and only just CCU'd the Nomad to a C1. Speaking from personal experience with this ship, you can't go wrong with the Nomad. It can do almost anything you need it to and then some. I highly recommend upgrading all components except QD to class A military. Nomad only has 770 units of quantum fuel so a class C military QD will be best so you don't have to stop to refuel while traveling across the system. Upgrade the guns to S3 Panthers and switch missiles out for Rattler 2's and you will have yourself a pretty formidable ship. The Nomad can carry small ground vehicles like the PTV, STV, ROC, Cyclone and Mule as well, so you can mine and explore to your hearts content. The Nomad also has a bed for those extended missions as well as a kitchenette, bathroom and closet so you can pretty much "live" in it and land at cities only to sell or resupply. All in all, a very good ship and one that will continue to be useful for the foreseeable future.

This video makes me happy 😁 By lore or store page, it's supposed to have a special armor, so that is yet to come. And it's heavy for it's size, so it seems that the weight of the armor is already taken into account? Speculations! But what it is, is a little plucky jack of all trades that punches above it's paygrade. It has charisma and soul and character. And It's illogical to buy one, I agree. You want one, you don't need one. But what the hell were they thinking with the toilet? There is so much dead room in the back, why not but in a shower and a sink? Where do I rinse my toothbrush? The toilet? But the nomad gives off a vibe, that you can rework the cabins etc, like a Camper.

I think there's a lot to like about the Nomad, especially when you consider its potential for exploration, and FPS bunker, box, salvage, and medical operations, on top of hauling a Roc and having fair firepower. In particular, its weapons are mounted closely enough together that you could probably get away with using fixed s3's instead of gimbaled s2's for a significant firepower boost, and the potential to carry something small and speedy like an STV or utilitarian like a mule. There's also plenty of room inside for extra gear, and a tractor beam attachment means you can move mission boxes to the interior if you don't feel like relying on the pickup bed. When you think about the Nomad being not just the ship you used to accomplish things but the storage unit for the gear you'll use to accomplish things, it stands out a bit more.
What ultimately turned me off of the Nomad, though, was the HUD. Specifically, there are two vertical bars of near-white orange glare at the edges of it which, in dark conditions, are both bright enough and central enough to the view out of the cockpit that they can pretty significantly hinder your ability to pick up details when flying in darkness. There was so much else about the Nomad that I liked that I struggled with this for a couple of months, but it made night flights and night landings annoying enough that threw in the towel. This very minor update to the hud system would probably make me use it again. Hopefully that day eventually comes.

The Nomad is a solid starter ship. Perhaps a little hydrogen hungry and it could use a door straight to the cargo ramp but a good ship nevertheless.
But like you said, there are perhaps better ships to start with. The trusty old Aurora is half the price for roughly the same functionality minus the ROC carrying capacity. The Cutter is roughly the same and the Penguin if you're thinking of more combat. Hull A for those who know they're going to haul a lot and for a little more money you'd get a Cutlass Black that is a bigger jump in capability than Aurora to Nomad.
If you're looking for a starter ship I'd say you can't go wrong with the Aurora. It gets you in game for the least amount of money and you can upgrade it later if you feel like it, at which point you probably know which direction you want to go and can pick a specialized ship. Or just buy stuff with the in-game money you've earned.

I agree that it is a comfortable and useful ship, especially as an entry level cargo and vehicle transporter. But I couldn't justify recommending it to new players, unless they really feel at home in the ship.
With the jump point stations, the are quantum drive distances of up to 120 Mkm in Stanton now. If you are the kind of player that wants to be able to respond to rescue or transport beacons all over the system, you need a bigger quantum fuel drive to equip the Spectre (faster for distances below 38 Mkm) or the VK-00.
The maximum range of the Nomad is 78 Mkm with the relatively slow Expedition drive.
The Cutter can do 90 Mkm with the fastest drive, the Syulen 134 Mkm.
Great video as always, love the visuals and the calm tone.

The Nomad is a great starter. It's a bit of a tough sell with its fairly high price point, but the flexibility it offers in terms of overall performance, amenities, cargo capacity, vehicle carrying ability is just excellent, and it's only gotten better with its tractor beam finally coming online. Especially since it's arguably the best tractor beam other than the Taurus for self-loading. The versatility at its size makes it one of a few starter ships that I think is really worth keeping around. It's great for a bit of ROC mining which is always a nice thing to do just to change things up.

The nomad is a wonderful ship and the interior design feels more premium and elegant to me than that of most origin ships. Also love the external cargo bay that doesn't allow for ship access. Makes me feel a tad less paranoid cos even if someone sneaks in there they can't get in the ship. There's only 2 things I'd change in the nomad: the hud color cos that almost red sucks for qt navigation and the poor fuel capacity which cig will hopefully bump up a bit to bring it more in line with the more recent starters like the cutter and syulen which have massive fuel capacities.

The Nomad seems nice, only thing i got against it is the hover landinggear and no ramp for easy access.
Edit: Also, the "save your money on components for your upgrade ship" is kinda a argument against a ship, a starter should also be usefull across the game even if it might not be the best.
For example, the C8R and Cutter are still very good ships for bunker missions.

I do not find the price particularly too high, but I can imagine an alternate history where this was the same price as the Titan and was everyone's favourite advanced starter.
The nomad flies so well. It is easy to handle and zippy, easy to park while still having so much utility. I honestly think it is a good alternative to the Cutlass, unless you have friends all the time. It is just so much more pleasant to fly while only having marginally less cargo.
I feel like the Nomad is despised by a lot of the community. I have always loved the Nomad. It is a competent multirole and the true entry point for ground vehicles. The Syulen is a better combat focused multirole advanced starter (still not a pvper), but only marginally. The Nomad is surprisingly competent in PvE and more comfy to fly than the Cutlass while still being generally useful. It is a very good alternative to the cutlass even if it was the same price in my opinion, especially for solo pilots.

The Reason being that the stock Nomad likes to overheat if you keep the quantum drive on for an extended ammount of time aka. flying down to an Outpost from Orbit. That causes the ship to shut of completly and in Atmo cause it and its occupants to fall to a very unpleasant death.

I love the Nomad, while it's a Jack of all trades it's certainly not a slouch in any of it's fields. It's a shame this wasn't when the tractor beam was implemented because with this, the Nomad is also one of the safer ships to run solo. You don't even really need to leave the ship nearly as much with the ability to tractor up items.
The Cutter really is the cheap alternative in nearly every respect. With so few components, not nearly as much cargo space, and combat performance that makes even VLRT missions tough, I do feel it's actually a harder sell for a new player. It can introduce the player into a bit of everything, but it'll also leave you feeling lacking. I actually have both with the Cutter specifically as the throw-away-runner that I don't bother upgrading, and the Nomad getting a full suite of upgrades. The Cutter almost requires a replacement, and won't be as good to make money with, but the Nomad can really give you a lot of mileage in the lower end of any gameplay loop.

Apart from my fondness for the ship, and in hindsight the adeptness of the design team in building a charmingly janky, half-assed attempt at Xi'an utility, the thing that keeps me coming back to the Nomad is that it's got a larger cargo bay than anything else that fits on an XS landing pad. The Nomad has 24 SCU of cargo space and lands on a Liberator. The only other ship that can remotely claim that is the SRV, but the SRV still needs a place to stash that cargo.
What makes the Nomad compelling is its service to the sandbox. You could put a fabricated turret and a generator in that cargo bay, if you wanted to. You could put basic basebuilding supplies. The Nomad is ideal for deploying boarding parties, or mines, or drones, just about anything by hand or by tractor beam. Its design doesn't just invite utility, it invites innovation and jury-rigging.

Hard disagree on the final verdict. After owning the Avenger Titan, Syulin, 315i, 135c, and cutter, the Nomad is worth every penny if as a starter ship, especially if you don't have alot of time to play. The Cutter has VERY little cargo space, the guns are useless, it's incredibly slow, can't hold a vehicle. The Nomad is by far the best starting ship in the game if you want to try a little of everything AND NOT SUCK at everything. Plus if you end up enjoying mining, you can purchase a Roc in game for very little and start making decent money suuuper early on. It's also MUCH faster, has great missiles for its size, just as nimble, and can actually carry enough cargo to make it at least more than just practicing driving around. Plus the tractor beam is in a great spot and... it has one, which most starter ships lack. It's basically a 315 but better in nearly every way except speed.

One thing is missing for it to be completely versatile - mining or salvage ability. Cargo hauling was not part of gaming loop, since those boxes weren't in the implementation yet or I couldn't find any.

@@Farrister But have one hour survivability and finding that rock for your power output level is not so easy task.

@cyvan1750 in another video mentioned that there were two weapon racks near the entrance to the ladder. I have been considering this as an upgrade to my Mustang, and the extra racks do seem like a nice feature & both of the demo videos I watched seem to have overlooked them. They must be tucked away quite nicely.

Question for all that would like to interact.
What is your favorite ship and why?
Can include more than one 👍

The only thing i luv about this ships is that innovative Gravlev Landing Plates and its aesthetics and angle architecture.
While the Xi'an is undoubtedly have mastered Gravlev technology and are sophisticated enough that i doesn't need protruding and over exposed Gravlev systems like the Humans and Tevarin side, they still needed Landing Gears/Legs to land their ships which so completely unnecessarily for a race that uses Gravlev as a standard in their Empire.
Having Landing Gears will just only over-complicate maintaining ships with that many complex moving part, using Gravlev u don't need moving parts that would definitely add to more weight of the ship but also ease of maintenance as the only problem is maintaining the Gravlev system which in the Xi'an case are integrated into the ship hull without exposing that vital system unlike the Human and Tevarin Gravlev.
I hope that Cargo Access would become a Cargo Bay Door in the near future because what's the point of that so called "Cargo Access' when u can't access that so called " CARGO ACCESS".

Hey, as always enjoy the review, but out of curiously, why did you redo this review?

    • @Farrister

I re-do them to update as time goes along, based on changes or requests from people. eg this one is already out of date, since it doesn't have the tractor beam on!

Suggestion! Do an updated 600i review since so many people are picking it up for the IAE paint this year

The Nomad is in a weird place of being understated-fancy and downright gaudy for me, what with things like the nice engineered stone table being right next to bright orange struts. It's quite weird.
