Paul, I caught one of Carlos' picks in 2007. It was a purple dunlop big stubby AND boy was it heavily used - there are literal chunks missing (I'm looking at it now). That is a testament to what you said about his "hard" playing style.
As an indie kid in the early 2000s, it goes without saying that Carlos D's basslines are now part of my genetic heritage I'm working on finishing my first album right now, and the bassline of my track "Afterglow" is 110% hero worship / homage to the man himself literally one of my goals on this track is that anyone familiar will hear it and instantly go "oh that's an Interpol bassline" IOW I'm just here to sound more like Carlos
If you want to understand why CD might have found Interpol a little limiting in the end, listen to 'Public Pervert' from Antics, and then listen to the Carlos D Remix of the same song, which was included on the Antics bonus disk. The remix picks up one bass riff from the original, brings it front and centre, and reconstructs the entire song around it as though it were a disco classic. it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most naggingly hypnotic bass riffs imaginable.
i always found his bass lines so vital to their sound. the guitar parts are sort of droning and monotonous indie/post-punk style (at least on their first) but the bass added much needed melodic detail on many of those tracks.
@@SlowDIIV evil and the beginning of the new. it’s weird because daniel does weird shit on his guitar and plays like an amateur. in hands away he plays one fret throughout the whole song, and in the new i have no clue wtf he does.

Funniest taunt yelled from a passing car: sometime around 2010 I was walking in Brooklyn and someone yelled "hey Interpol, got any coke?" Best genre-based insult EVER.
The baselines on Interpol’s early albums are so cool. The New is amazing and Untitled is totally carried by the bass as the guitars create droning textures. I wonder if it’s worth looking at the bass on Is This It? The early 00s was a great time for bass harmonies
Even though Interpol is more often tied to Joy Division with regards to the sound, and I do agree with that, I think they actually sound more like The Chameleons. Listen to the song Don't Fall from The Chameleons.
Yeah even Niege from Alcest has that opinion of them. The two guitars of Interpol have always sounded more influenced by the guitars of the chameleons.
@@soysaucehairdye7869 I thought the same thing about how the 2 guitars play off of each other. I also think Peter Hook is way more melodic and is less traditional bass than Carlos D.
@@erikjansen8597 yeah I agree. I think Interpol always got the Joy Division comparison, because Paul Banks and Ian Curtis are both low tenors that sing more in the style of a baritone and thus their voices have some similarity to each other and more people know of joy division than the chameleons, the sound, lowlife, and asylum party.
@@soysaucehairdye7869 BTW. What are your thoughts on the drums comparison? I am thinking Interpol's style of drumming is closer to Joy Division, because the Chameleon's drumming sounds more progressive. That aspect combined with the voice of Paul Banks is probably why many link the 2 bands. I am curious to read what you think.
To be honest interpol bass lines are not simple they are very intercate and very complex. The beautiful of Carlos bass lines is that they are so melodyc he was just brilliant bloody brilliant
quite possibly the best bassist to come out of the early 2000s. it’s a shame he didn’t stay in interpol, their music hasn’t been the same since the release of Our Love To Admire, he was definitely the biggest factor in Interpols sound.
Thank you, paul.I have seen many tributes to Interpol but none to it's anchor. That would be carlos.yes, the drummer is riding neck and neck with him but Dengler elevates every song he surveys.I'm sorry carlos felt the band he helped propel bored him but there's always tomorrow. He could rejoin.
Awesome! You have covered all my favorite bass players so far 😃 Carlos D Peter Hook Simon Gallup Justin Chancellor Gotta say, even though Carlos is no longer part of the band (once they finished the production of the self titled album) the latter records are still good specially El Pintor. Paul's basslines are far from being at the level of Carlos but the rest of the instrumental is still Interpol.
Yep, normally J bass sounds too bright for me but i think the production of first Interpol albums emphazise low frequencies a little bit , and turn down treble a little bit also. But recently i heard live sessions and he was sounding througt DI and with almost no EQ, and still soundig solid. Maybe he rolled down treble knob 30% or 50% and used old rounds in every session.
You're wrong. Carlos didn't leave because he didn't like playing bass, he left because it was he was tired of being a rock star. He went to go into acting after his departure from the band.
Thanks for sharing this insight. Just saw Interpol for the first time playing in Berlin. Great band and I immediately loved the baselines. So great to see where it came from. Very inspiring Bass Player though.
Interpol's first 2 albums were their best. TOTBL and Antics. The lyrics and bass are what made me enjoy them. After Carlos left, I couldn't listen anymore.

Probably my favourite bass player ever; no one serves a song as well as Carlos did in my opinion. Perfect balance of groove and drive.

I really haven’t gotten past the fact that he left the band because he didn’t like playing bass. How could someone not like playing bass? 😢
why did he even join the band as a bassist if he didnt like playing bass? thats the question
Maybe he wanted to play guitar and got "stuck" as the bassist. Old school rock band snobbery.
He originally was a guitar player. He joined the band on a whim to try something new and the band already had the guutar parts filled at the time.
Personally I love playing bass.😊
It's pretty weird, the weirdest part is that he is one of my favorite bassist and gave interpol the great bass lines of the first albums.
Absolutely one of my favorite bassists. I think he is awesome because his bass lines are always groovy, creative and add a lot to the songs.

Pick playing on a J-Bass usually sounds too scratchy for my taste, but Carlos D got a solid, not-annoying tone. He rolled his tone off a bit, maybe?
He probably just had minimal EQ on his amp he didn’t turn up to treble too much
His strings sound slightly old and worn in too

COuld you make a video of Chris Slorach (METZ) or Cameron Picton (black midi)?
Ma un video su una bassista? Georgia South delle Nova Twins, ad esempio, ha uno stile molto particolare.
You should try Amos Williams of TesseracT. He has some classical music training which gives him an interesting style :00
