I remember some comment on a different video on this game mentioned something along the lines of like "this game sucks, only play if you want a turn off steam vent valves simulator" and guess what I ACTUALLY LOVED USING VALVED IN METRO AWAKENING, THEY FELT IMMERSIVE how you have to use both hands or else it's heavy, and I thought it was fun turning those valves!
@FrontwaysLarry I was watching a streamer play through thr whole game, and this guy wouldn't stop talking and NOT paying attention to diologue or story, it was really annoying had to stop after he didn't know what the plot even was anymore and was thinking the plot was something else completely
The three BIG things that killed it for me were 1-cutscenes in a VR game(cannot let become he norm) 2-not being able to drop weapons and then instantly disappearing when you let go of them 3-that wierd thing where if you walk into geometry by moving IRL or move away from a cutscene or scripted event y it get sent to a black void that muffles sound and is disorienting to get out of and sucks and is extremely frustrating when it happens in combat
Cutscenes better become to norm. VR story games suffer so massively from a lack of cutscenes that it feels like every game is just a run and gun, it doesn't feel like I'm actually playing within a story. The cutscenes in this game are what make it so great to me
I'm actually having a lot of fun with this game. I'm able to max the settings out completely on a 4070ti. I know a lot of people are having issues with it for some reason.
I was definitely having issues prior to release, but the recent update actually solved a lot of optimization issues for myself. Seriously such a fun game, though.
@@Harvester88 I've tried it with both and it's better to play wired into your PC with the link cable. Also, I'm running a custom build PC so it won't be a one to one comparison unfortunately. I have a I9 13900K overclocked and water cooled for my cpu and my 4070ti is overclocked as well. Also, I have an 850W power supply to be able to push all that power.
Just once I'd like to see Half Life Alyx subjected to the same nit-picking every other game gets subjected to. Apparently having your guns go back to your holster is not immersive, yet picking your weapons from a magic weapons wheel that pops up in front of your face IS immersive. At least this game HAS weapons holsters. I wish I could have bonked people in Half Life Alyx, but alas, the game couldn't be bothered to include melee combat at all. Clicking on a ladder and instantly teleporting to the top is immersive too, I wish more games would copy that one (I think that one's been fixed, but it took a while, and it's not like climbing mechanics didn't exist when it was released). As for puzzles, I'd rather see no puzzle than have to do the same boring ass thing a million times. Honestly, the only game that's ever had puzzles that I actually LIKED and thought were cool was Boneworks. I'm not saying Half Life Alyx isn't a great game, it is. The voice acting is the best I've ever heard, the graphics are among the best, the detail is incredible, and it had some cool innovations like the gravity gloves. It's far, FAR from perfect though, and I know I'm in the minority but I just don't think it's the be-all end-all VR game everybody touts it as. Flame away.
I'm actually in the same camp! Half Life Alyx is actually still not perfect either, I'd say. Gets a little too much praise in some departments. No melee, no body, no sprint, and no jumping. I'm not a fan of either floating holsters or the weapon wheel for immersion, personally. Part of why I brought up Paradox of Hope is because I really prefer a full-body inventory system with IK arms. I had initially planned to talk in detail about POH and CONVRGENCE, but my usual runtime for these videos was already getting too long, this video would have been 20 minutes long if I rambled on fully. lol What HLA totally nailed was consistent graphics, though. Your hands, your gun, the environments, and even a bottle of beer are all the same fidelity. Part of the reason I bring up HLA at all for this video is because people keep comparing it to HLA, and barely anyone is mentioning the inconsistencies between assets in this game. I just want Vertigo Games to have an uncontested visual hit here instead of one that needs to make compromises due to standalone optimization, even if it's only a potential update down the line. Other than that, though, many of my issues simply come down to personal preference. Virtual Bro said it pretty well in their review, mentioning how the way they handled the inventory system here is actually much more welcoming to new VR users, which I totally agree is a good way to go. I just wish I had an Into the Radius style toggle to have a visible body and the ability to lose my gun for those of us that like some more in-depth mechanics. Appreciate the in depth comment by the way my dude
@@FrontwaysLarry Fair enough, and like I said I'm not saying in any way that HLA isn't great. I just think people tend to give it a pass on things that other games get nailed on. To continue the comparison, while I haven't played Metro yet from what I've seen it seems to do some things better, some things worse, and some things about the same as HLA. I tend to agree that dropping your guns and having them magically snap back to your holster is a bit cringe, that should be a setting like in Arizona Sunshine. As for the graphics, I'm an old dude that remembers playing games at 320x200 with 64 colors at 12 FPS, so to me anything looks awesome :)
Keep in mind that Alyx was released March 2020. It doesn't include innovations to VR gaming that came after its time. And it's not really fair to ding it for that. Heck, Alyx itself established many of the innovations that became standard in VR games. But really when you're comparing the "greatness" of a game, it does need to be relative to the time period it was released in. And that's a big part of where these comparisons to Alyx are coming from. Because it's not 2020 anymore, and the still very young VR industry as a whole has advanced significantly since those early days. Yet modern VR games are still eclipsed by this old VR game even when accounting for budget. And this is the case in large part because of the Questification of VR gaming which has dragged it backwards.
It is not half life alyx, because its called Metro Awakening. People need to stop comparing every fckng game to half life alyx. Especially to lower budget productions.
Outside elements as in the surface? If so I totally agree. I was really hoping for some more winter scenes outside, personally. Also wish they'd done some kind of weapon customization for scopes, lasers, etc., but oh well. lol
@@FrontwaysLarry in metro 2033 (non redux) different weapon variations would have different attachments (like the ones you highlighted with the different stocks, one of those was actually better than the other lmao)
Thanks for the fair review, this is the only content I've watched for Awakening besides the trailer. You did a good job pointing out the same things I'd typically notice but not kick the game out of bed for. Hope they add in weapon drop. Subbed and buying Awakening. Cheers P.S. Someone else recommended Lone Echo series, if you haven't played them, it's a VR must and deserves attention
Its a shame that everybody mentions about the indie game meyro like vr game being delisted but not that the same dev released a new VR game this year that people should check out
I was honestly surprised by the amount of praise I saw about Metro VR on RUclips. Every video I've seen until yours was absolute praise. This caught me off guard because, since even during the paid early access, the game has been toting an ~68% review score.
Yeah, part of why I angled the video this way was to mildly call out people not mentioning the inconsistencies. People have been buying it and leaving bad reviews, and even a lot of the positive reviews seem reluctant to do so like myself, talking about how they wish it had better aspects here and there. That said, being negative I always try to toe the line on for videos, since it usually attracts people who are really eager to get negative right back. Some comments on this video already reflecting that. lol This video is still mostly positive, but I believe in honest purchasing, and especially with the wide angle spectator cam, the textures are never truly easily visible until you get in-game.
@FrontwaysLarry honestly, i'm probably gonna end up buying it this holiday, mainly due to your review giving me a balanced expectation of the game. Rather than hyping or trashing it.
Good point, some tubers just overhyped this game, it is very good, maybe best in 2024 on Steam (Alien RI still coming up) but there where saying it's "next HL:A" to often and some folks expected too much. There is no way near of collision and interactivity with non essential for gameplay objects but worth to play for moments like going between hanging bodies and pushing them by AK47.
Yeah, we need to set expectations realistically. I was genuinely surprised that barely anyone mentioned the low res textures/low poly models. It's on par with like 80% of Alyx, but it's importan to still show where it falls short. I have high expectations from Vertigo Games, and I want them to have a no-compromises hit, not just "oh well it was on standalone so oh well"
I hate the nintendo-length tutorials, but I suppose it makes sense for a game's first entry on a totally new platform - they're probably banking on this being some metro fans' first times in VR. speaking of, hoping some of those superfans come 'round and just build an upscaled texture pack ✨
Modders I could definitely see turning this thing around visually for sure! But yeah, it's definitely structured to be a good VR entry point, which I'm totally okay with. I saw some reviews saying the game is boring, so I felt like mentioning things relating to that a few times so that people looking for only action don't go looking here and getting disappointed. lol
My biggest problem and why I can’t enjoy this game or half-life Alyx is the fact that I can’t turn on physical arms and a body. I hate floating hands because it crushes all immersion.
The only fair argument I hear from floating hand diehards is that they get taken out of the immersion if the fullbody IK doesn't line up with their actual arms, or it's janky. That I can get, but more games just need to do the Into the Radius mechanics of choosing for yourself.
in my opinion there is never anything Perfect and there will always be someone to criticize. this game is fantastic and involves a lot of super interesting things. not without flaws but it is so good that it is very easily forgotten. let's appreciate the good and be indulgent for the small less pleasant details. otherwise the vr will never be able to reach another level. excellent work metro. don't give up
Perfection shouldn't be chased, of course, but we'll never see positive change unless we're vocal about shortcomings. This video is overall positive about the game, but more so calling out how many other creators failed to point out the inconsistencies of the graphics in order to push people to buy the game, leading people into buying it and being let down. The game was initially majorly review-bombed on Steam, and many of the positive reviews are still wishing for better graphics. You can love something and still wish it was better.
Does'nt alyx also do the same thing with the guns? Whats the issue if Alyx is that good in your eyes? IMO this game is better than Alyx because Valve was so terrified of making even a single person motion sick that they removed any kind of movement that wasn't walking, I mean there isn't even sprinting. The game is great but man, it could have easily been 2x better if they just ignored the very small percent of people that would get motion sick
HLA does that opposite, actually, with the gun continuously floating regardless of grabbing or not. I feel the same way about that not being immersive either. Entirely agree with your other statements there. If you watch the video, you'll see my points come down to this regarding Half Life Alyx: - The game is getting a little too much praise, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. But it's not the new "Half Life Alyx" as people have been praising. - The textures are are inconsistent and models are low polygon in the environments, and the lighting looks so good that it actually is somewhat hidden in flatscreen recordings/trailers. My overall thoughts on the game are that it's a borderline masterpiece, but that I'm frustrated that no one else is mentioning the setbacks, which led to the game getting review bombed its first few days, and many leaving reviews that are reluctantly positive because of similar sentiments.
PCVR deserves better and less stuck up gamers. That's the true thing holding back PCVR adoption. You demand perfection in a genre just getting started and then crap on the devs that try. PCVR will continue to die if you don't stop behaving like this.

The thing is that PCVR _has_ games that make full use of its capabilities to great effect. But these are mostly things like sims and VRChat.
