I’m with you Ken! Matt, A.K.A “the Surgeon” His diagrams were very helpful. He just doesn’t understand his talent is unrivaled, and we can only hope to get past a steeple let alone an entire forest of trees. His best advise is to practice with toy drones first and not to mess with the yaw. I’ve never been good at scratching my head and stomach at the same time, but he’s made me determined!! Great video! You both inspire me. Thanks
great video, i'm 2 years from retirement and training with filming drones for a side job of aerial filming and this reverse flight just gave me a hole new idea of how to push the product while bringing in the personal in one sweeping flight.
This is some really good info. . Thank you and Mattias so much for taking the time to shear in a very entertaining way. And yes please give Mattias some more time to finish up with 4 and 5. Love it.
I love your videos Ken (and the live show), but this one might just be my favourite. Thank you for giving other talented pilots the spotlight of your channel to show off their skills and maybe teach us all something new too. I would love to see more of this type of content. Mattias you are an inspiration - thanks to Ken, I am now subscribed to your channel.
Wow, I’m in total awe with Mattais flight and teaching ability! Ken, That’s one hell of an opening flight passing that steeple in this video! Great instructional video for everyone to learn and practice, that was very gracious of him to take the time to share his knowledge! Much better with your head out of the line of sight; LOL! Thanks for the great video Ken, Well Done!
Ken, Its pronounced 'Matt hi as' and what a wonderful man he is taking the time to share with us how how flies. We are going to do level 5 & 6 in Pt 2 aren't we. Thank you Ken. We all love you.
Great video (and training) Mattias and Ken. It looks "simple". I guess you could "cheat" and duct tape your session 5 onto the back of your phantom and create the video flying straight away. But that's not the same thing at all. The hardest thing to learn is the counter-intuitive control inputs when flying in reverse. It's sorta' like flying fixed wing towards you versus flying away from you....roll axis is reversed and it takes training to overcome the "intuition". And yes, let's get to "level 5 & 6" training soon. You're a great teacher Mattias. Thank you.
That was very informative and he put a lot of work in explaining his talent. I will try flying backwards after I get more comfortable with forward n turning and sideways. Still new w the Phantom 4 adv.
That was awesome Ken and Mattias! When I first saw Mattias' videos I thought he was flying forward and just reversed them in post (that's what I do...LOL), but wow the amazing technical skill it takes to fly this way is just incredible. I'll have to pick up a little Hubsan to practice these levels. Thanks for sharing Ken and a big thanks to Mattias for sharing his expertise! Well done gentlemen!
Mattias is a cool dude!...He sure inspired me since you first featured him Ken!..My last 3 flights i been flying backwards and seeing how close i can come to stuff...Im not flying full speed tho thats for sure!..lol.. But yeah the slingshot thinking in your head is is definitely key to this..In that first video when he mentioned slingshot i got it real quick..I had to go straight outside to try it, and it really does work!... I have 2 phantom 3's so if i booger one up i'll have the other while im repairing the other, hopefully not but i sure have been getting way too brave lately!!...But oh well if a crash happens it happens, only good experience and some amazing shots will come out of it!..Thanks Ken for turning me on to Mattias!...And thanks Mattias man!, your right on!!
Thanks Ken and Mattias for all the good information You did well for the first time Ken was that your first flight without the brace for your back. Thanks Again
Great strategic tutorial, gents! Last spring I made a video where I was flying through a thick forest full of branches and twigs. The hardest part, though, was to fly through a walking gate with side poles and a roof. The drone was always gravitating towards either of the side poles even if there was plenty of room on both sides. Mattias’ note about the yaw control and the sensors made me relize why it was almost impossible to fly straight through. I should have used S-Mode on my Mavic. However, just to let you know, my Mavic survived. 😁🇫🇮
Oh I am gonna love watching this over and over and over.... Yes I want to do this and this will be even easier with the P3S because it has NO sensors....Its perfect for this.
This was a really good video excellent content thanks for bringing Matt on here to explain this new way of flying. Just flying backwards past the church steeple IT looked super close. Definitely gonna have to practice with my Hubsan FIRST. And then I'll try it with my dji Spark. Keep up the good work Ken!!
Great video Ken. How about a Part 2 - like theone2be33 - I would like to hear more about Levels 5 & 6 and more about the Preparation that was listed on the wall. Can't say we don't pay attention to your videos... Keep up the good work, much appreciated
This is awesome! I grew up pre-minivans and our mode of transportation was often a station wagon. The last seat in the back faced the "wrong way" and the world looked much like this....well.....except we didn't leave the ground. ;-)
Great video Ken. Always entertaining 👏 and also loved the sound effect past the steeple. Like your ear is on the drone when passing (of course no brushless motor sound) by it. Great job both of you on the backwards flying skills!
Every time I see a video like this I want to go out and do it. Winter now so not today. The slingshot is a very good tip to use. Mr. Mattoisering is very good at it 😁
Very good information, and Matthias is a really cool dude, waaaay too much info for such a short video. Get a series going on this Matthias! Thanks Ken, from another Ken(neth) in Denmark, right next to Sweden.
Awesome backwards flying! As a Mavic Pro owner, on a small budget, I hate taking any risky flight paths, so I always have a minimum 2000 feet between the Mavic and the nearest obstacle.... Of course, my videos are boring as hell too !! :)
Nice, a video with a Swedish person. I know that the Swedish make the best TV series (by the Lumiere Studios). And this one didn't disappoint me at all. Thanks!
Excellent video! Thanks Ken and Mattias. Or maybe I should say "curse you" because now I am constantly looking for spots to practice the Slingshot control. I think a viewer compilation of successes (and failures) would be a great teaching tool. I've already had a couple small crashes... hahaha
This was amazing. Tried the ol Level 1 with my Spark today with great results! As my comfort level increases so will my daring! Keep up the awesome videos in and around Nashville! Maybe I'll run into you one day!
Great info - well worth the price of admission! Eagerly awaiting Part 2 - Levels 5 and 6. Is level 5 flight through solid matter and 6 might be time travel??? I guess we have to wait and see!
Some great tips for the rookie. Matt did a great job teaching, the visual aid/drawings helped to clarify his points. Clearly he is an excellent drone pilot, but he is a great teacher too. Thanks for the lesson
Hi Ken. Can you imagine the skills that you could acquire if you spent the day with this guy? Heck, I’d be happy to get to L3! Shame he didn’t get to explain 5 &6 though. Take care. Peter
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial...! I am a big fan of learning, so I'm glad to see you going 'Joshua Bardwell' on your channel...! That 'slingshot' concept is obviously helpful, and those last two back-up clips were outstanding! Thanks for ANOTHER interesting video! :))
Great instructional video, and thank you Ken for introducing a “flying safely in adverse conditions” video, but unfortunately, Ken, your interruptions are distracting for us that are trying to focus on the message being presented ... just my thoughts ...
Wuau! Very good video. Matthias is professional. I definitely won’t try it with my Mavic Pro first. I’m going to buy a cheap Hubsan. Once my confidence is high, I’ll give a try with my Mavic .
Well that happened! I did my first level 2 pullaway with my platinum yesterday! Not as good as yours but I buzzed my daughter’s car and a tree. Nice video. I’ll post mine tomorrow.
I've learned a lot on this video Ken Heron ... NewBie on Drones here... I hope you can have a review of JJRC X12 drone 😊😊😊😊 im from Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭.. 😊😊😊
Ken Heron Absolutely and to me it makes it particularly awesome in such cases as in the video at 16:26 where Matt is quite far away and his drone passes close to some trees or in another video (can’t remember where I saw it) where the drone passes through between branches. I could only dream of doing that.

Lol, my phantom's on the operating table now for trying that move and not knowing what the heck I was doing. But she's expected to pull through, ☺. All in all, it's great to see someone actually pull it off successfully. 😊
Hey Ken my Hubsan IS my best (and only) drone. So what do I practise with? Great interview. Glad Matteus wasn't asking me those questions , you were really on the spot there.
I have a plan. Level 0. Backwards controlling pitch and roll with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the way and accessible ground below. I imagine preventing any accidental yaw is going to be hard.
Yes, that's a keeper Ken. Well done. I might try with my el-chepo drone, but I can't see me doing it with the P4P. Well not for a long time anyway ...............
I only have 1 drone the phantom 3P and I baby it for now. I enjoy your videos and puns . One day when I can buy another drone I might try this but living near the beaches in Florida it's not the trees I have to worry about but the dang seagull that like to attack. My first drone was the size of my hand and had no GPS so when you let go of the controls it dropped like a rock, in fact I'm still looking for it in the trees lol. Keep your videos coming.
I have to say one more thing, Out of all the other channels on Drones like your you'll the only one that lets your viewers know you are listening and respond back. You are a kid at heart so keep flying high and never look back unless there is a tree involved. . . O, ya, hows your back doing?
I fly in at I mode. I let the wind take control. I just let it drift at 400 feet 300 feet. You can measure how fast the wind goes by how fast the Drone is moving without touching the controls. And then when it gets far enough away I have it come back automatically. When it is getting ready to land, I cancel return to home. Then I let it drift again. It saves on the battery, you can look around without worrying about flying and you can also check the wind speed. Plus it's just a different way to fly if you're bored of flying at some point in time just something new
I’m with you Ken! Matt, A.K.A “the Surgeon” His diagrams were very helpful. Wow, Mattias does have a genius for spatial awareness and he is able to teach his flight patterns well. Glad to see you're feeling better Ken!
Inspiring, for sure!
I just wish I was practicing this four years ago…
Oh well, better now than never!
Such a cool video. Big contribution to the Drone community, Ken! Appreciate it!
Great Ken!!!!!!!!!!!! I really think we all thank you for discovering Mattias for all of us! Thanks! Cheers from Argentina!!!
Great video Ken and Mattias. Loved the sound effect as you whooshed past the steeple. I'm in AWE. Very informative, Thank You Both ;-)
Wow. One of the best training videos ever
great video, i'm 2 years from retirement and training with filming drones for a side job of aerial filming and this reverse flight just gave me a hole new idea of how to push the product while bringing in the personal in one sweeping flight.
Excellent!
So glad you found it helpful.
This is some really good info. . Thank you and Mattias so much for taking the time to shear in a very entertaining way. And yes please give Mattias some more time to finish up with 4 and 5. Love it.
You bet!
That was an excellent video. Mattias did a great job of explaining it. Thanks to you both for a fun and informative 23 minutes.
You bet!
Mattias is an excellent teacher.
I love your videos Ken (and the live show), but this one might just be my favourite. Jim Bolland I agree, it would be great to see more of this type of video here. Maybe it could become a regular slot on the live show? 👍
Absolutely great video. PLEASE do more of these. Thanks Ken & Mattias!
That's really nice of you to say. It took a long time to put this particular video together. It's nice to know it is appreciated!
Spectacular collaboration. And those ending shots are just SICK!
Ken, Its pronounced 'Matt hi as' and what a wonderful man he is taking the time to share with us how how flies. We are going to do level 5 & 6 in Pt 2 aren't we. Thank you Ken. We all love you.
Yes, part 2 coming soon.

Yes, please go at your own speed.
Ken Heron Oh for sure.. waiting for the weather to get better here in Washington State. It’s been wet n cloudy. So ready for spring.
Great teaching moment Ken. Now we need to get you trained to go through those trees like Mattis’s did. Happy Flying.
Thank you Ken for one more really good video. I enjoyed that video so much, cause of that little course to better fly the drone ! Go ahead like this!
Thanks for the very nice comment!
Great tips and illustrations! Yes, agree that Hubsan makes for a good trainer drone for learning new techniques.
Mattias is a cool dude!...He sure inspired me since you first featured him Ken!..My last 3 flights i been flying backwards and seeing how close i can come to stuff...Im not flying full speed tho thats for sure!..lol.. Fast forward a month from now, DJI is inundated with repair requests. But worth it! Thanks Ken and Matt
Hahahahaha! That might be a possibility indeed!
Thinking of a controller as a slingshot is a genius idea and makes flying backwards much more intuitive. Thanks for this tip Mattias!
Thanks Ken and Mattias for all the good information You did well for the first time Ken was that your first flight without the brace for your back. Thanks Again
Educational video at no extra charge, haha lots of great info Ken & Mattias thumbs up
Oh my god! I loved it when you crouched at the end.."like Mattias"
Great strategic tutorial, gents! Last spring I made a video where I was flying through a thick forest full of branches and twigs. Ari Voutilainen exactly how my mavic acted when i tried this through a long narrow boat launch. It had fence and trees on both sides.
Oh I am gonna love watching this over and over and over....
Yes I want to do this and this will be even easier with the P3S because it has NO sensors....Its perfect for this.
YAAAAY!!!
Thanks Ken and Matthias, looks like the phantom 3 pro is going to get some backwards treatment😎
Good luck!
What an awesome pilot, thanks for sharing his skill ken.....absolutely brilliant👍👍
Glad to do it Owen!

That's a great idea! Thank you for watching and supporting my channel.
This is an awesome technique! Very pleased you shared this tid bit. I'm going to try it myself.
This is awesome! I grew up pre-minivans and our mode of transportation was often a station wagon. The last seat in the back faced the "wrong way" and the world looked much like this....well.....except we didn't leave the ground. ;-)
Most excellent! And my binge ends now... the movers will be upon us in a week!
Awesome.
Now it's time to...
Start all over again!!!
Really good Mattias and Ken 👍🏻
Great video Ken. Always entertaining 👏 and also loved the sound effect past the steeple. Like your ear is on the drone when passing (of course no brushless motor sound) by it. Great job both of you on the backwards flying skills!
Amazing skill! Fearless!

I'm glad you found the video helpful. One day I would like to get my passport and come visit your part of the world. I love that area!
Awesome backwards flying! As a Mavic Pro owner, on a small budget, I hate taking any risky flight paths, so I always have a minimum 2000 feet between the Mavic and the nearest obstacle.... Of course, my videos are boring as hell too !! :)
I checked out your Channel just Bc you said they were boring. And I like them
Nice, a video with a Swedish person. I know that the Swedish make the best TV series (by the Lumiere Studios). And this one didn't disappoint me at all. Thanks!
Nice👍. This definitely goes on my “things to do with drones list”
Good deal.
Headed to Nashville for spring break hope the weather is good to do some droning!
Excellent video! Thanks Ken and Mattias. Or maybe I should say "curse you" because now I am constantly looking for spots to practice the Slingshot control. I think a viewer compilation of successes (and failures) would be a great teaching tool. I've already had a couple small crashes... hahaha
Excellent
Great hookup. Thanks. Top video.
This was amazing. Tried the ol Level 1 with my Spark today with great results! As my comfort level increases so will my daring! Keep up the awesome videos in and around Nashville! Maybe I'll run into you one day!
Wonderful!
I'm happy you found this video helpful.
Awesome video guys. Very well explained and very much look forward to seeing more.
Thanks so much Steve!
Thank you Ken and Mattais for the great info.
Great info - well worth the price of admission! Eagerly awaiting Part 2 - Levels 5 and 6. Is level 5 flight through solid matter and 6 might be time travel??? I guess we have to wait and see!
Haaaaa!! Unfortunately the drone can't go 88 miles an hour.
Very skilful flying but think I will try and master forward flying before I try that :-) Thanks Ken.
Good plan.
I'll just stick with flying my drone forward and reversing the video during editing...safer for my investment.
He has truly amazing talent in backwards flying omg....
Some great tips for the rookie. Matt did a great job teaching, the visual aid/drawings helped to clarify his points. Clearly he is an excellent drone pilot, but he is a great teacher too. Thanks for the lesson
Great exercise to practice, creates amazing video. On a side note, nice to see to replaced the Mazda RX8.
Ken Heron,l
Thank you a ton! for bringing this to all of us! Amazing work! Just Freaking Amazing skills! Thank you!!
Just started flying and love the slingshot diagram!
That was a great interview Ken, I really enjoyed it
Wonderful!
Best video you have done mate. Thoroughly enjoyed the walkthrough
Thanks so much!
Hi Ken. Can you imagine the skills that you could acquire if you spent the day with this guy? Heck, I’d be happy to get to L3! Shame he didn’t get to explain 5 &6 though. Take care. Peter
The other levels will be in an upcoming video.
So I'm gonna try this..yup. looks like fun. The slingshot actually makes sense.
Thanks Ken and Justin, very informative and fun👍
Great instructional video, and thank you Ken for introducing a “flying safely in adverse conditions” video, but unfortunately, Ken, your interruptions are distracting for us that are trying to focus on the message being presented ... just my thoughts ...
Wuau! Very good video. Matthias is professional. I definitely won’t try it with my Mavic Pro first. I’m going to buy a cheap Hubsan. Once my confidence is high, I’ll give a try with my Mavic .
Very interesting video. Thanks Ken and Mattias
Wow, I wish I watched this two days ago. :-( Keep these educational videos coming ken, luv it!
Well that happened! I did my first level 2 pullaway with my platinum yesterday! Not as good as yours but I buzzed my daughter’s car and a tree. Nice video. I’ll post mine tomorrow.
Thanks Ken ! And Mattias too! I tryed it with my phantom 4...and i impressed myself LOL!
With practice i ´ll get cool video
Great!
I'm about to post another Mattias video. 👍
I've learned a lot on this video Ken Heron ... NewBie on Drones here... I hope you can have a review of JJRC X12 drone 😊😊😊😊 im from Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭.. 😊😊😊
This was a fun video to watch, Allring is the Red Baron incarnated.
He's really good!
thanks for that, his sling shot analogy was genius!!
EXCELLENT! Great job Guys!
Thanks!
That first shot from Matt through those trees 😳😳😳
Very interesting. I always thought those shots were done forwards and then reversed when in editing.
Some do it that way, but it takes away from it somehow.
Ken Heron Absolutely and to me it makes it particularly awesome in such cases as in the video at 16:26 where Matt is quite far away and his drone passes close to some trees or in another video (can’t remember where I saw it) where the drone passes through between branches. I could only dream of doing that.
Here we are into real dronening Ken. And seeing the comments, there are quite a few who like that high level. Would have liked to see the video up to the last level. The video of the two of you was technically much better than Thursday night show, have you got more bandwidth? 👍🎯🇩🇰
Thanks Peter! We were just talking on Skype and I was doing a screen record. It isn't as bandwidth intensive as having a conversation on Skype and streaming at the same time.
That was a good lesson! Good job!
Thanks!
Also the genius Swede was so humble! Gotta love those Swedish Geniuses!
He's a great guy.
Super cool. Love watching your videos for new ideas.
Much appreciated!
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!! And who knew the P4 rises up when you let go of the sticks...how did you not know that? Confucius say “aah student become-ah teacher, teacher become-ah student”. What about levels 5 and 6...we want more!!!
Glad you liked it!
Atti mode is a very useful mode to learn how to fly under. It can come in handy to have those skills if you should send lien come first a compass error and the Drone leaves the GPS mode and suddenly you have to fly in atti mode.
Yes indeed.
Boy is he GOOD.............You both are Ken........
I'll start doing this with my Hubsan today! :D
Flying LOS with planes I learned that flying gaps was all about being able to see something from beyond (like sky) on all sides then if your flying straight away then your on a clean flight path.
That is cool. It looks like it takes a lot of practice. But that guy can fly! I wish I could that good forward. LOL
that was good information and fun to watch.. thanks guys
Have to add this comment - Great Level 2 pass Ken, that was well done. Will you try a level 3?
That's the burning question Lol!
Lol, my phantom's on the operating table now for trying that move and not knowing what the heck I was doing. But she's expected to pull through, ☺. All in all, it's great to see someone actually pull it off successfully. 😊
I'm glad your drone will make a full recovery.
Ken Heron just waiting for that carbon fiber gimbal support to get here and we're good again. ☺
SCROLLERS UNITE!!! Still a fun video to watch. So long ago....
Great video, Ken! Matt knows what he's doing, obviously. Where do you find those "whooshing" sound effects?
Hey Ken my Hubsan IS my best (and only) drone. So what do I practise with? Great interview. Glad Matteus wasn't asking me those questions , you were really on the spot there.
Buy some extra propellers and have at it!
I have a plan. Level 0. Backwards controlling pitch and roll with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the way and accessible ground below. I imagine preventing any accidental yaw is going to be hard.
Not forgetting throttle
Yes, that's a keeper Ken. Well done.
I might try with my el-chepo drone, but I can't see me doing it with the P4P.
Well not for a long time anyway ...............
Mattais is amazing
Very informative, what about level 5 and 6 ?
I only have 1 drone the phantom 3P and I baby it for now. I enjoy your videos and puns . One day when I can buy another drone I might try this but living near the beaches in Florida it's not the trees I have to worry about but the dang seagull that like to attack. My first drone was the size of my hand and had no GPS so when you let go of the controls it dropped like a rock, in fact I'm still looking for it in the trees lol. Keep your videos coming.
Hey Joseph! Yes I remember flying in ocean city New Jersey and being attacked by the seagulls too!
I have to say one more thing, Out of all the other channels on Drones like your you'll the only one that lets your viewers know you are listening and respond back. You are a kid at heart so keep flying high and never look back unless there is a tree involved. . . O, ya, hows your back doing?
Maaaan, this guy is in a league of his own!
I fly in at I mode. I let the wind take control. I just let it drift at 400 feet 300 feet. You can measure how fast the wind goes by how fast the Drone is moving without touching the controls. Very informative video, Ken is funny. Good job Ken and Matt.. "Don't fly in ATTI mode, there is no reason!". lol
Lol 😅 Be careful Ken you’re hanging around danger .. don’t crash your phantom .. That guy is very talented
Amazing what he could do Drone
