That was hilarious lol. Thanks. Racing quads are great fun, stressful and an adrenaline rush :). They typically do 150kph (90mph) and above, the speed is amazing especially if at about 3 feet off the ground. The Stabilize and Horizon modes take a lot of power from the motors so the speed is quite reduced. Acro (Rate) mode is really what you need to use for control. Acro is at first quite difficult. Highly recommend a few hours on a Simulator. I'd suggest LiftOff on Steam. The QX7 (or X9D+) will plug right into the computer for control.
@@KenHeron I do look forward to the videos. With a mate to fly with you're always sure to have a great time. Like pylon racing but with zero expense and safety risk. Like a video game - but in real life! lol. With FPV the camera angle is important. Everyone tends to fly with the video at a flat horizontal angle, i.e. straight and level view. So as you move the camera angle up, you're causing a steeper angle on the quad and thus a faster cruse speed. Start at 25 degrees or even less, perhaps as low as 15 degrees minimum. I'd suggest 25, many who are into very close proximity prefer 25. 35-45 gives a higher cruse speed and other effects which err become complicated. I currently fly 40. The other issue with FPV is that obviously you can't see behind the camera. So the effective technique is that you must always be traveling forward. Always maintain forward momentum at mostly moderate speed, so that you are always moving into space that you have already had a clear view of. Trying to hover around with a close to zero camera angle invariably leads to you hitting things that you never saw. Hope that helps. :) I'll shut up because a lot of the fun is in the learning. I think I need to calibrate the inputs a bit. Great video cheers to Mel for being a brave spotter standing next to the thing when you were taking of 👍
Ok, so first off your instincts are good. These things will cut you up, and badly, if you make a mistake. They will not help you out if you make a mistake like the DJI drones will. What you experienced is probably the most common question in the race drone world. If air mode is enabled, which it should be, then when you arm the motors they will continue to increase in speed. This is normal and you can just take off and fly. But take some time to research air mode and what it is doing. Simulator first so you know what you're doing. That was fun. I'm living vicariously through your antics Ken. It's much cheaper that way. BTW as an old RC pilot and trainer, I always recommend turning on the TX first then the Rx. It was very important when we were on 72mhz because of interference. Not so much these days on 2.4 but still best practice.
Yeah there were a huge number of safety issues demonstrated here that could have gone really, really badly. But Ken lucked out and didn't get hurt, that is good.
With Frsky it doesn't matter if u turn your reciever or transmitter on first it'll always connect. Dsmx or spectrum u do though have to turn on your transmitter first.
Man, i so want to try FPV. I've been told that once you cross over to the "DARK SIDE" of drones you never go back. I've tried on my sim, but I am really bad at it, LoL Happy flying.

@@gregoryhurst5982 very true. It's becaue most of us have been through the frustrations of building flying crashing. Over and over. Good and bad. Hours of building, flying for a minute, smoking something having to start all over. You progress like anything else through stages . So to help someone new get through that faster is important!
Hey ken! I been a DJI guys for a couple of years and like you just got involved in racing drones. Bought a $600 FatShark HDO with rapid fire module, tanaris x9d plus special edition $259 and a $300 TBS oblivion. Price sticker added up real quick! Still learning to fly acro on simulator, a lot of crashing but at least I’m not wrecking my $300 drone LOL. Flying acro is hard.
Hey ken. I’m Jeff’s cousin. You should video with me sometime and I’ll give you a walk through. There’s a few things you should change for a much better experience.
Hi Ken. I've been flying race drones for about a year. There's quite a few things that you're doing wrong here and I would be happy to point them all out but...I think a better suggestion is that you definitely, definitely need to get with somebody experienced to teach you what to do. There's some safety aspects here that you don't know about and you can get really hurt. Specifically arming while holding the drone in your hand. If you're in air mode the drone can just go crazy and those props will cut you up. But that's just the main thing, there's other stuff too. I think Evan Turner is in your area, he's one of the fastest pilots in the world. So is J Bardwell who works with Rotor Riot and makes his living teaching how to do this. You can also look up races on multigp.com. There should be some in your area that you can go hang out and watch. If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them. Let me know.
@@KenHeron absolutely be happy to help. I'll see if I can make some tutorials or maybe you have some ideas. Send me a email we'll chat fpvevilmunkey@gmail.com
Hey Ken - Josh Bardwell has a ton of great overviews and tutorials (and he’s over in Knoxville, TN) if you want to learn more about racing drones. You can plug that QX7 into a computer sim to get familiar with the different controls and also get those first hundred crashes out of your system without killing your drone. I practiced a ton in Liftoff, though there are many other options.
Ken Heron on the video transmitter, there should be a button. With that you can increase/ decrease the power aswell as tje channel and band of the 5.8ghz it transmits. You can probably look up instructions on the interwebs.
Another great video, Ken. Thank you. While we're on the topic of crashing.......What drone insurance would you recommend for commercial work and would you advise monthly or hourly?
It's a lizard 105s and this Morning I found out the supplied 550mah battery is actually just a 450mah battery with a different label. Tut, tut eachine.
To plug the battery before turning on the radio is the worst thing you can do.. after taking off so close to yourself.. I know it's all fun and giggles but that's only until you lose a finger!

More of this please.
nice one ken well done the pair of you lol
This was hilarious to me. I don't own a camera drone...yet, and only fly acro. You have so much more control with acro
With Frsky it doesn't matter if u turn your reciever or transmitter on first it'll always connect. Dsmx or spectrum u do though have to turn on your transmitter first.
Beardman got awasome voice. WOW. Realy radio voice.
Yay cigarettes!
Man, i so want to try FPV. I've been told that once you cross over to the "DARK SIDE" of drones you never go back. I've tried on my sim, but I am really bad at it, LoL Happy flying.
It's true I crossed over and sold all my dji stuff lol
The nicest, most welcoming people are in the FPV drone world. I've never seen a group more willing to welcome and help out a complete newbie and push them to improve.
@@gregoryhurst5982 Very true!! I've seen complete strangers give someone a $20 motor just so they can finish their race. Soldering irons appear out of nowhere heatshrink screws flying props jump out of bags onto new motor up it goes.
@@gregoryhurst5982 very true. It's becaue most of us have been through the frustrations of building flying crashing. Over and over. Good and bad. Hours of building, flying for a minute, smoking something having to start all over. You progress like anything else through stages . So to help someone new get through that faster is important!
I am sure this won't be true for everyone, but after getting my FPV freestyle drone my camera drone is just collecting dust.
Next👏 meme👏
super video guys ..
Long way to go before I try a race drone. Fly safe
You sound like Scott Manley he says that at the end of his videos
You can do it! Just a few weeks practice in a simulator and you got it.
i found this entertaining . i wanted to help you so bad . practice practice practice. i wanna see you on rotor riot next year. hahaha
Haaaa!!
I realize it must be frustrating for actual FPV pilots to watch me struggle.
@@KenHeron not frustrating at all. I just felt like you guys needed help.
It was entertaining. I wanna see more of this
Thanks! I'l keep trying. 😊
Fall like a rock.. You rock :) Damn
I’m a pilot and have a single engine instrument rating, flying race drones is the hardest thing I’ve ever done
Hi Ken, For my first drone I purchased the Mavic Pro Platinum and was wondering if I can fly without the I phone.
Yes!
The phone is there to offer info and the ability to interact with the drone, but it will take off and fly without the app running.
watching a 'drone operator' trying to fly a fpv quad... good times.
Hey Ken great start man. I would love to come and give you some lessons on racing and freestyle!! Everyone starts out that way.
I need help. I think I could be pretty good with a little guidance from people who know more about FPV.
Yeah! Get with Bardwell that would be an epic video.
COOL VIDEO GUYS...
Who's the negative Nancy that disliked this video! Great job guys 👍👍
Might i reccomend turning the video transmitter power up? You will get much better video range and link quality.
I have no idea how to do that.
I use Verifly on a per-job basis.
If you're flying for work more often than a few times per week,
you might consider something monthly.
Thanks Ken!
Ken u need to turn air mode on it and turn prop stop off
It's a lizard 105s and this Morning I found out the supplied 550mah battery is actually just a 450mah battery with a different label. Tut, tut eachine.
Tut Tut...
The sky is falling!

Love the vids. And! Puns
Thanks!
Like 2 school boys playing together :-)
Thanks to Ken I started my own Drone channel :) My wife thanks you too (not really)
Haa!
Tell the wife hello from me.
@@KenHeron she found no humor in that. I sure did!!!
First. Can’t wait till TNL
Hi Ken
Is it the same goggles you use on all the drones?
thanks for another good video with a little funny wording
For FPV race drones:
Fatshark Dominator V3 Goggles: amzn.to/2EYCwFW
For Photography drones:
amzn.to/2XNkNOe
For both:
amzn.to/2SjOoc5
You need to be ready for some acro . . . need a sim . i used freerider recharged ! Its awesome .
To plug the battery before turning on the radio is the worst thing you can do.. after taking off so close to yourself.. I know it's all fun and giggles but that's only until you lose a finger!
Ken awesome video but you should try acro in simulator, its easier once you learn it. Also try having a lanyard it helps if you pinch.
Thanks!
I actually do use a lanyard, but had it off because it was blocking the camera on my chest. 😊
@@KenHeron thats why i was surprized that you are not using i there. Also you could try without the stick ends, i found those anoying for me for pinching.
Your ready for the DRL. Keep practicing
Thanks!😀
