I truly believe as years go on Dave Roberts will be widely recognized for the managerial masterclass he put on in the 2024 post season. He's gonna be studied.
Id wager on coaching being more important and impactful during the 5 game, 2024 world series, then in any other over the past 25 years; if not half a century. Baseball nowadays (especially with the DH implementation) is viewed as easy an easy sport to manage; over other team sports. So when we see a manager having to tactically master a whole goddamn series: We should appreciate the difficulty. And recognize that Doc put a beat down on this post season 👏
The resilience him and the organization showed even after getting cheated out of a World Series title back to back in 2017 and 2018 is insane. He’s def one of the goats
Having long relievers like Landon Knack and Brent Honeywell tank innings to preserve the high-leverage bullpen arms worked against the Mets and Yankees.
Dave Roberts finally has learned to delegate and trust his instincts as a manager. I think Roberts biggest issue before this season was his need to follow a strict guideline of how to manage his team and it doesn't change in any situation. This year he relied more on trusting his coaching staff, his players, and his gut during the situation. When he went up to Treinen and basically let him make the decision, it was the moment Dave Roberts went from a manager who couldn't adjust to one of the best managers in the game.
Let's be honest, though, if it hadn't worked, the strategy would have been laughed at for decades and held bitterly against him by Dodger fans for at least however long it took to win another Series. It's mostly called genius because it worked.
@@williamknudson8414 If Bart Starr slipped and fell instead of scoring in the Ice Bowl Lombardi would've been laughed at too. But that's the point, his gut instinct worked. And it defined a legacy, just as Roberts defined his.
@@fbistatmajor5918 I know, instincts and luck absolutely play a factor in sports! I'd say Roberts was basically in a tight spot and had to roll the dice, and it paid off. I still feel like it's worth remembering that it was still a guess and that success is often the real distinction between genius and idiot. Sometimes you get the Moneyball ending, though.
However I'm quite confident he would not have punted game 4 of the WS if they'd scored more than just a couple runs in the top of the first. If it looked like his bats were lively, he would have invested more. This is absolutely fine, and one of the advantages of being on the road. You can see their pitcher before they get to see yours.
@@mal2ksc Yeah, there was definitely a short window where he thought they could have still chased before he decided it was the more sensible strategy to punt and regroup. Kudos to Knack and Honeywell for eating all those innings, too.
@@arontotheleft i think what people might 'take issue with' is that this wasnt the first time with a bullpen game in the playoffs. They've seen big time success with it. So going into it, they were still hoping to actually get a win. And really, they weren't THAT far from pulling it off. They were down by just 1 run after 5. Things didnt really crumble until the 8th. I wouldnt call that a punt.
@@IRanOutOfPhrases I think they were hoping for win, but he threw out Casparius in Game 4. That's a strong argument for them trying to win, especially since the other victorious bullpen games he opened with his Dawgs: Brasier and Kopech.
The Dodgers didn’t want to use this strategy. We needed to. The organization constructed a gritty and unusually variety filled bullpen that gave them the ability to play match up effectively. Additionally, the three starting pitchers did their best, to greater and lesser effect, to minimize the need for the bullpen on those days. This Dodgers postseason was a picture in managerial strategy, teamwork, and fight. Go Dodgers 💙💙💙
The Dodgers have five guys who could arguably close for other teams (Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol, Alex Vesia, Micahel Kopech and Blake Treinen). Unfortunately, Phillips was injured during the NCLS... At any rate, having an high-leverage bullpen is an obvious luxury other teams don't have. So few teams could replicate this strategy over and over. Second, when a Dodger reliever was called in, Roberts wanted to make sure sure opposing batters never got too familiar with each pitcher. So Roberts inserted them so his pitchers never faced the same batter twice throughout the series. I believe Treinen was an exception in innings 7 thru 8 in Game 5 simply out of desperation.
Ironically this is a strategy I've seen in a baseball anime. Diamond No Ace. The coach of the Seido, high school baseball team in Tokyo rotated in games between 4 different pitchers. It's a risky move but it worked because it allowed the pitchers to gain experience and the work load didn't over take the pitchers because they shared the responsibility of passing the torch to the next pitcher. Of course another reason for this success was because the team prides itself on defense and that team had one of the best offense lineup you will see. This reminds me of this Dodgers team.
I’m gonna say this in the comments because I was an absolute a** hole to Dave Roberts prior to this season and postseason as well..I owe him an apology because with all the injuries to their starters and not to mention a hobbled Freeman, Betts, Muncy, etc missed time in the season..and Ohtani doing something we have never seen before…yeah it was a mind f**k but he did a MASTERFUL JOB..one of his finest jobs..he’s the reason we got that 2024 chip..hopefully you get that extension and we can win some more 🙏🏼🙏🏼🏆🏆🤝🏼🤝🏼
Great video!! Small thing I noticed in the script at 2:22 when a team needs 3 wins to win the series it’s a best of 5 because a best of 3 is when a team gets to 2 wins first. Amazing video tho thoroughly enjoyed it
Way back around the 60's, 70's my dad who play a couple of years in the minors said teams should do this. No pitcher should pitch more than 3 innings. Bullpen game is a great name for this.
Honestly Dave managed his ass off with what he got. Would’ve been easy to panic and throw a guy out there on short rest but he was very methodical with every decision.
It kinda backfired due to Graterol at game 5 though, got put in at 6th inning but instantly walked 3 batters and give up 1 run and Roberts was out of good/fresh relievers so he had no choice but to put in Treinen early with 2 outs at 6th, that left Treinen way overworked(42 pitch count by the end of 8th) and he couldnt close for the 9th inning 1 run game. If they lost that game, their best closer Treinen would have barely any rest next game. Yamamoto + Treinen at Game 6 wouldve been quite a good combo to win especially that Cole wasnt starting too. but maybe im being too complacent too because Yankees already saw a lot of Treinen's pitches, they wouldve been used to his pitches. If it was me I think I would've put Buehler first, because the score at 6th was Dodgers 5-6, I would only use Treinen if Dodgers took the lead which they did at 8th inning 7-6. But tbh does this really matter that much?? it all depends on the performance of the players. if everyone is bad, manager can barely do anything. like Judge was in a slump, everyone did errors. what could Yankees manager Boone possibly do?
I do think had they lost game 5, it would’ve been interesting to see their next move. Also I think as soon as Dave realized he had a quality chance to win game 5 with LA scoring 5 in that disastrous 5th inning for the Yankees, he was going for the win and to end the series that night. Which may be another reason why he burned Blake the way he did. Managers in baseball naturally get overlooked because at the end of the day, players are the ones that have to preform. This sport is different from most where coaching and strategies aren’t as prevalent every play or possession like in football or maybe basketball. So when a manager in baseball attempts to try something fairly new it’s always worth taking a look at in my opinion. Especially when it happens in October! Thanks for watching!!! Love the discussion 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The amount of time needed for a starting pitcher to recover has always been huge. Fewer pitches means less recovery time which means more pitches. I like the bullpen strategy.
Dave has lived by this strategy of leaning on his pen for a while, unfortunately it doesnt always work and gives him a bad look when someone doesnt perform to their standard. But in a decade when hes done, im sure ppl will look back and think "bro had a creative mind"
The Rays were the team that initiated bullpen games and the strategy has been spreading through the majors. Your video sounds like Roberts "invented" the idea. I give him credit, he did what he had to do given the circumstances and it proved effective.
Of course Roberts didn't invent the bullpen game, but he did develop a game plan against the Padres' and Mets' lineup that was the most effective possible way to take them out. The interesting thing is that the strategy really blew up badly against the Yankees - their bullpen game in the World Series was a disaster. They lost it, and gassed their arms to the point that Game 5 was pretty much lost. It took a historic tank job by the Yankees, stretching their relievers to the point of exhaustion, and bringing in a starter to close it out.
I consider the “Father…” of the reliever to be Clark Griffith. He was the first to use himself primarily to close games in 1905, a concept he learned his 1891 rookie year. When he became an owner, relievers in his pitching staffs stood prominent. The “bullpen game” is not new to Baseball. The Rays have been using it for years now. It’s just like the weather. Dave Roberts has a reputation of over managing and tiring wins into losses during the post season. This year, it worked out. The Yankees were a poor fundamental team.
Simplest strategy of spending a billion dollars a year for every star free agent and eventually you’ll find a way to win a championship. Crazy how that works

Ah yes, our favorite starter as a Dodger fan; TBD aka Them Bullpen Dawgs

You can say it gave teams false confidence too. Knowing what was lying in wait after the B bullpen ate up the slop
More than a "strategy" it was a "necessity" to do bullpen games. All his starting pitchers were injured, he had only 3 available.

Roberts did punt those games. I don't see how anyone can think otherwise. Yet, it was the right thing to do because his arms needed the day of rest.
