it would have been less embarrassing to have been swept than what happened in game 5. And yes you're right, they would have lost to either the Mets or Padres as well.
As a Dodgers' fan. The 2024 WS reminded me of the 2018 WS. Back then the Red Sox were super dominant, and the Dodgers made it that far cause the NL as a whole was a bunch of bad teams. Us LA fans thought we had a shot of winning in 7, ended up losing 4-1. 2024 was the mirror of that, with the Dodgers being the big dog and the Yankees making it that far cause they were the best out of the worst AL bunch
You are right… the 2018 Sox were just that much better. They barely scrapped by against the Brewers in 7 games in the NLCS… and All the momentum LA had after the game 3 extra innings win went out the window when they blew that huge lead in game 4. Two years in a row watching the visiting team celebrate the WS on your home field.
The 2024 World Series was much closer than the 2018 World Series. Games 1 and 2 were much closer in 2024 than games 1 and 2 in 2018. Also the 2018 Brewers were a pretty good team. So were the Dodgers. They just weren’t on the same level as the Red Sox who played in a better league.
Yankees did crush the dodgers in game 4 who only played their rookie relievers for the majority of the game. They basically punted that game. So the Yankees number were definitely inflated in that game

They won that game only b/c the Dodgers needed to do a bullpen game to give their starters and best relievers some rest. The Yankees were not facing the Dodgers' best pitchers in that game. The Dodgers did the same thing to the Mets in Game 5 of the NLCS. They did a bullpen game, lost it, and then came back in Game 6 with their best pitchers and closed out the series. The only difference with the Yankees was that in Game 5, the game after the bullpen game, Flaherty didn't have his stuff, and so the Yankees jumped on him. But once they took him out in the 2nd inning, you notice the Yankees only scored 2 runs after that inning. B/C the Dodgers brought in their best relievers, now fully rested, and shut them down.
Game 1 wasn’t Boone’s fault. Cortes was the best option against Ohtani who was the first hitter Boone had to deal with. Freeman was not the main concern. If Ohtani grounds into a double play, the game is over. Ohtani was 2 for 12 against Cortes.
It's worth noting, too, that Freeman didn't need to hit a homerun for the Dodgers to win; a solid single would done the trick, and I doubt anyone would be second-guessing Cortes or Boone if that had happened.
