    It's a weird irony that, as loathsome as Voldemort giving Lily to Snape would have been (and wouldn't SHE have just been in the frame of mind to fall for Snape after losing James and Harry!), it was still one of the few things ol' Voldy ever tried to do for someone other than himself. It was sick and evil, but it was intended as an unsolicited reward for Snape's loyalty. How ironic that the closest to kind Voldemort ever got was what destroyed him.

    • @gsiya4023
      @gsiya4023 3 года назад +80

      Not exactly it was more like let me reward my servant because he was loyal not some kindness

    • @13vatra
      @13vatra 3 года назад +46

      Unsolicited is inaccurate. That scene where in desperation Snape goes to Dumbledore for aid Snape specifically tells Dumbledore that he asked Voldemort to spare her. So he was asked, but actually attempting to fulfill that request was essentially Voldemort patting a loyal dog on the head.

    • @Cailus3542
      @Cailus3542 3 года назад +48

      It's less uncommon than you might think. Voldemort was no fool. He knew that he had to reward his followers and allies to retain their loyalty. Besides that, I think he gained a certain pleasure from bestowing gifts like a 'generous lord'. Those loyal to him (and actually competent...yes, looking at you, Lucius) were duly rewarded when they did well. Bellatrix's loyalty was so highly valued that she...er...gained the "greatest" of rewards, and sweet mercy, that is not something I ever want to imagine.
      The whole point of Voldemort's allure for the Death Eaters, besides the cult/racism stuff, is that by following him, the Death Eaters and their followers gain power. That could mean magical power, learning the Dark Arts from the greatest dark wizard of them all. That could mean wealth. That could mean status and influence. For Fenrir Greyback, that meant victims. Voldemort used those hooks to spur his followers on, to motivate them.
      Manipulating the greed of the Death Eaters was a far better way to control them than slavish devotion or fear. That's why so few Death Eaters defected over the course of the war, although as you say, ironically, that caused the most powerful Death Eater of them all to defect to the Order of the Phoenix.
      Voldemort understood greed and desire, but he never understood love, something far greater, more powerful and more terrible than any dark magic he wielded.

      I always wondered what had happened if Tom had used any other spell to get rid of Lilly. Like a full body bind or a simple yet strongwilled stunning curse. She was still willig to die, would that suffice to protect Harry? Or does she have to die in order for the spell to work?

      @@gamebreakers2535 I could see an advantage if you wanted to travel to a place like London, because it's so busy. What if you apparated right in front of some muggles? Then with floo powder you would have to know some one with a fire place in London to go to or some businesses might have a fireplace you could go through like the like the Leaky Cauldron. So I could see the train being a useful mode of transportation. In the 6th book Harry and Tonks have to jump off the train because it's headed back to London and the train seems deserted so Idk if that means that they just store the train at Kings Cross or if it does go back to be used for other things.

    THEORY: When Harry runs from the library using the invisibility cloak in PS, he happens to run into Snape and Filch RIGHT before finding the mirror of Erised. Are we supposed to think Snape just happened to be patrolling the halls in that specific place at that specific time? I think NOT! I think Snape knew about the mirror and would go to visit Lily every so often!

    • @TheTytoGaurdian
      @TheTytoGaurdian 3 года назад +61

      Mmm... I don't think so because remember what Dumbledore said about the danger of the mirror and how wizards have wasted away in front of it? Snape was just as clever as Dumbledore (or very close at least) and he'd know the dangers too. Also, I'm not sure if he'd want to see his greatest desire in the mirror because, in the end, it'd be impossible. Lily was already dead. I'd think that'd be more painful than anything else. Personally, I think Dumbledore had Snape and co patrolling around there because of how dangerous the mirror was. He didn't want Harry (or any other student) messing around with it so he set extra guards on it. I bet the other teachers were probably ordered to keep an eye on it too. Snape just happened to be the one on duty at that time in the book.

Especially these days where it's super easy to ask authors questions about their work on social media, we often like to treat their word as final, but I think there's value in not holding the creator of the work in such high regards that it precludes everyone else from being able to make their own interpretations just because "the author said X so now that's fact."

    I think the difference between Lilly and James's death is something like the difference between fighting off an intruder because they're in their home, or taking down a known criminal as a police officer would do (which James does), and literally taking a bullet explicitly meant for someone else (which Lily does for Harry).

    I think it is because the Abada Kedavra wasn't as strong when he used it against lily. Perhaps Snape's request made him hesitate for a millisecond. Perhaps not having second thought or regrets, but just a minuscule bit of distraction. That made his spell be just faulty enough for the sacrifice to be stronger

    There is one other factor here: the wizard or witch themselves. This is still magic, at the end of the day, and quite possibly the most powerful magic that exists. This is not something that any old wizard or witch can do, regardless of circumstance. Lily is noted to be extraordinarily gifted with charms and an exceptional witch in general. Moreover, her very nature leans into this sort of magic; she is naturally compassionate and loving, remaining friends with Snape far beyond the point anyone else would've. This is the sort of magic that she may even have a natural talent for.
    Harry doesn't have his mother's gift for charms, but he is a gifted wizard, and in the ways that count, he is much like his mother. Harry's nature means that his Patronus is very powerful, and I'm willing to bet that Lilly's patronus was pretty darn strong too. All of that combined means that Harry, much like his mother, is able to use that same terrible magic to protect the people he loves during the battle.
    And here's the best part: this is magic that, I think, not even Dumbledore could use. It's just not who he is, not in his nature. The same goes for James, arguably. It requires a very specific kind of person, a very rare kind of person. That's why, ultimately, only two people had magic stronger than Voldemort's; Lily and Harry, and why only they could beat him. Even sixteen years later, Lily's magic played a crucial role in saving Harry's life one more time and ensuring Voldemort's final defeat.

      @simluv.7483 3 года назад +6

      I agree with you except for the “Snape’s fault” because fault is putting the blame as if Snape was going to ever save him. Basically what I’m saying is Snape in no time line would have ever asked Voldemort to save him, so it’s less of “Snape’s fault” and more of Snape’s doing. Lily getting a chance was his doing, James not getting a chance wasn’t technically his fault because he didn’t specifically ask Voldemort to go after him (unless I’m remembering something wrong 🤷🏿‍♀️) so it can’t technically be his fault. Fault would be saying he was considering it, but we all know he would never consider helping James.

    Could you do a video on Lily herself? You guys always come up with the best insights, details from obsure Pottermore pages and theories. It always bothered me that Lily is a super important character, but that we know pretty much nothing about her.
    Her daughter was jealous, her parents were proud, she was muggle-born and a super crafted witch, Snape and James were found of her, she among Slugs favorite students, she married James, gave birth and her eyes to Harry, and died to save him. But did she had friends, hobbies, any personality traits beyond being nice, and not liking bullies nor racists, etc.
    I cannot get over the fact that we never see Harry looking for the people in the photo album Hagrid gave him, or asking Hagrid or anyone else to know his parents more intimately (except this one time when he asked Remus and Sirius about his father being a bully). What kind of orphan doesn't try to learn more about his parents when handed all the opportunities and resources to do so?!?!?

    I don't think Snape joined the Death Eaters because of their pure blood view point. I think it was, a least for Snape, all about learning more about the dark arts from a powerful wizard. It is said, time and to me again how fascinated Snape was about the dark arts. That he knew more curses in his first year that any of the 7th years. The chance to learn from Voldermort would have been an opportunity for Snape. I doubt it was ever about the pure blood mind set. Even though Snape was in Slytherin, I'm sure he noticed how none of the Slytherins came to his aid when he was getting bullied by James, and Sirius. Lily was the only one to come to his defense. I mean why join a group full of cowards? The only benefit to Snape would be to learn from Voldermort, and being able to protect himself from people like his father, James and Sirius.

    Considering the part in OotP where Voldemort says it's old magic and he should've considered it as a possibility. I remember learning the reason why Muggles and Wizards are segregated is because they warred and the wizards retreated and disappeared from history altogether. Maybe a lot of wizards back then created this spell to protect their children. Lily's squib ancestor (since Muggleborns have squib ancestors who marry Muggles) could've been one of their descendents so it just came more naturally to her. Though anyone can learn it regardless of their ancestry.

    In Harry Potter everyone's afraid of saying Voldemort's name because it makes people remember the killing and torture and the constant state of panic. Now, I haven't read the books yet but from what I heard, they use sympathetic magic as their magic system in the "Name of the Wind" so saying the bad guy's name would like... empower him or something.

    When he says it’s old magic, if it was used before that doesn’t necessarily mean it protected against the killing curse before. It could be protecting against a plethora of things the book doesn’t spill the details on

    So does this mean Neville could never be the chosen one? If Voldemort only gave Lily a chance to live because of Snape then he probably won’t give the same to Neville’s mom, therefore no sacrificial magic?

      Neville's parents were tortured into insanity after Voldemort's first demise.
      Circumstances might have played out differently, but similarly enough.

    What turn of events would have happened if Lupin took his wolfsbane potion the night of the shreaking shack? Why couldn't harry and hermione have gone back maybe an hour more and fixed that as well?

    • @13vatra
      @13vatra 3 года назад +1

      Well the main issue is that time travel for the Harry Potter series (at least in the original books) doesn't actually change anything. It's stuff you already did just simultaneously before and now. Lupin transforming meant it was already too late.
      Examples of this include Harry's patronus that he was convinced was his dad until he realized it must have actually been himself. And Hermione breaking the pots with rocks. Both happened the first time, it just wasn't clear how or why until we saw those two on their past adventure.

    How about theories like
    -why did lily change her mind about James? She seemed to honestly dislike him in the 5th year. Did the lost friendship between her and Snape impact the decision? Was she just hollow and decided to give him a try since he was popular and rich (that would deeply hurt her saint like portrait in the books) did James safe lily from the death eater pals of Snape and showed her he had the right values? Did she simply loose a bet to James who wagered a date and then showed her that he was worthy of her love? And how would he be able to do that... I like to theorise about that with my nerd friends and there are quite a lot possibilities :D would love to hear your ideas

    I’m going to predict the answer before I watch the video, the reason Lily’s sacrifice saved Harry but James’s sacrifice didn’t was because Lily was given the choice to stay alive but sacrificed herself for Harry and James wasn’t given a chance to stay alive meaning that he couldn’t save Lily or Harry

    • @ba-cl8ji
      @ba-cl8ji 3 года назад +3

      They're not alive. It's just a spell to make the portraits think and speak like the person on the painting.

    Perhaps the reason that this particular time that this particular protection worked was due to the fact that Voldemort's soul was already used to being torn and easily attached itself to Harry which may have never happened in previous attacks of the same kind. Dumbledore did say that V's soul needed something to attach too but maybe this is the first time this brand of this magic has ever happened, keeping Voldy from dying himself from the rebounding curse.
