    Voldy's wand game: I've always assumed he holds it like that on purpose, because he's trying to project that he barely needs the wand because his magic is so powerful. It's like he's saying, "Oh, I guess I'll use this thing if I HAVE to, though I'm pretty amazing on my own... I'll barely hold on to it because I only barely need it!"

    • @Cora.T
      @Cora.T 3 года назад +46

      Maybe he just wants to be different, but it could be just a film choice. The actor specifically asked for the hook, partly to make it look scarier and partly so he could hold it this way. And honestly I find the way he holds it and gestures with it to be kind of creepy, like it's abnormal. And that of course is a really powerful cinematic tool, you set the stage and tell a lot about a character without having to say anything

  • @54raynor
    @54raynor 3 года назад +376

    JK Rowling has already answered this question: he got his want from Wormtail.
    But is there any reason why Pettigrew couldn't have recovered Voldemort's wand that very night? He still knew exactly where the house was before everyone else. I think it's likely that Voldemort brought Pettigrew along to Godric's Hollow, and Pettigrew immediately went in to check it out when he saw something went wrong. Realizing that Voldemort was gone, he took the wand and kept it by his side (or hidden away somewhere) until Voldemort's return. And even if Voldy never returned, possessing the wand of the Dark Lord would be a valuable card for Pettigrew to have in his back pocket. It would make perfect sense for someone with Pettigrew's survival instinct.
    This would also explain why neither Hagrid nor Sirius saw Voldemort's wand when they went to recover Harry from Godric's Hollow.

    • @MultiGroene
      @MultiGroene 3 года назад +43

      I feel like this explaination makes more sense. Also because it doesn't feel very wormtail like to think of something like that 13 years later.

    • @voodoo_on_u
      @voodoo_on_u 2 года назад +18

      I thought this too. Wormtail was there the night Voldemort killed the Potter's. Maybe even told him right outside their house and then just hid in the shadows till it was over but when it all went wrong went in to see what happened and once saw Voldemort gone he took the wand and ran away. Either hiding it somewhere safe or does it's magically transform too if it's in his pocket 🤔 but either way he took it that's night just incase Voldemort came back.

    • @modestysnooze6154
      @modestysnooze6154 2 года назад +30

      I agree - Pettigrew took it straight away and stashed it somewhere before his encounter with Sirius. Harry was the first person to survive the killing curse, there's no way authorities wouldn't have searched for the wand that cast it.

    • @bluebear0711
      @bluebear0711 2 года назад +9

      I agree. It would also be fitting for Voldemort to take Peter with him. Remember, Peter just recently switched sides and Voldemort could be expecting a trap.
      I also guess Peter couldn't be immediately shure what happened between Lily, Harry and Voldemort. Obviously something went wrong, but I don't know if Voldemorts body was left behind. If there was no body, Peter might as well thought Voldemort was still alive, so it would be the reasonable thing to take the wand.

    • @ForeverDegenerate
      @ForeverDegenerate 2 года назад +23

      @@voodoo_on_u I think Pettigrew did hide it and I think I know where. I think he hid it in the last place anyone would look for it: Either the Grave of Thomas Riddle Sr or The Riddle House. The reason I believe that? After Pettigrew flees at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, he knew to go to the Riddle House in Little Hangleton. And as we see at the beginning of The Goblet of Fire, Barty Crouch Jr knew to go there too. I would hazard a guess that Voldemort told all the Death Eaters about that location. Also, J was wrong because Voldemort's Resurrection was not the moment Voldemort got his wand back. The beginning of the book when he, Pettigrew, and Crouch are in the Riddle House is the first time we see that wand. Voldemort uses it to kill Frank Bryce, the Groundskeeper. The further proof that it was, in fact, Voldemort's own original wand that he used to kill Frank is the fact that Frank is the second spirit to be spit out of Voldemort's Wand when Harry engages Priori Inacantatem (the first, of course, being Cedric Diggory).

      I was thinking the same thing.
      I mean he could have gone back for the wand afraid someone else would find it first just in case someone used the revreas spell reveal thing and reveal his incrimination. not saying that would work but if he was afraid someone could or would reveal his involvement by having the want he most certainly would have it.
      second he could have gone back for it out of protection, ether to scare people away by having it. or by proxy of so long as he has it voldimort can't use it agenst him if he's still alive, and if necessary a bargening chip if voldimort wasn't killed just injured.
      heck the whole reason why wormy might have gone back could have been to see if vold-a-bor was still alive at all, and ether help or kill him himself to ether avoid the ministry's wrath if he kills him pretending to be a double agent or something, or avoid snor-da-morts angry if he was alright pretending to help him.
      and double here maybe the wand was what tipped black off that wormy did it and forced him to do his dissaeapring act for 12 years. black sees the want by accident and wormy cuts his finger off and vanishes with the wand to frame black cause no one would belive him. and at no point do we hear why black came after wormy from his prospective as far as I am aware so it's possible.

    I think Dumbledore must have known that the wand was still in the house so I guess he (or another member of the Order of the Phoenix) most likely took it. But I also guess that later Olivander informed him about the fact, that Harrys and Voldemorts wands share the same core. So in Dumbledores place (knowing about the prophecy and that it mostly likely will come to a duel between Harry and Voldemort) it might be even reasonable that he deliberately returned the wand into the house since he believed it would be an advantage for Harry.

    I saw a tiktok that reminds me of this. The girl says her head canon is that Peter went with Voldemort that night and was the one who knocked on the door. Peter is greeted by James who is unsuspecting and thinks his friend has come to see him. He says “Peter what is it? Is something the matter? You look awfully pale. Come inside?” And that’s why James is killed so easily as Voldemort appears and enters the house. James has just enough time to yell for Lily to take Harry upstairs as his childhood best friend watches him die. This allows for him to be at the scene and collect voldemorts wand as things go south. Also gives him time to possibly hide it before Sirius and him duel.

    Firstly, I think we shouldn't discount Quirrell. Because he wasn't in control of the body, I don't think Voldy would have let Quirrell use the wand and could have hid it away by that point. To be use once he regained a body of his own.
    Also there is the chance of Wormtail getting it sooner, though I am not sure that it would be in his character to go back to Godric's Hallow that soon. Though an odd thought did occur to me when I was thinking about this option. If Arthur was in the ministry at that point, he may have been with some ministry officials investigating or securing the scene and that is when Arthur found "Scabbers." I always thought that it was odd how quickly he supposedly made it into the Weasley family.

      Voldemort had people everywhere in the Ministry. Malfoy practically had VIP access as Fudge's "benefactor". If Bagnold, and then Fudge, chose not to destroy the wands but instead display them in a show of defiance or as a way of taunting the DEs in Azkaban (or as a matter of keeping evidence presented at their trials locked away), any one of Voldemort's people within the Ministry could have gotten their hands on them in the 14 years between their imprisonment and their breakout.

    I have a question about this theory that I don’t believe was adequately handled by the video(though I do very much enjoy the theory don’t get me wrong). Dumbledore was never one for… let’s say… respecting privacy. He was always watching Harry after the night Voldemort came to Godrics Hollow. He searched the Gaunt house when he found it. He explored an unknown but probably very large number of locations in his search for the horcruxes. He entered slughorns house when it had apparently been attacked, when his only purpose was to ask about a job. He even mentions to Slughorn that one odd aspect of the house was that there was no dark mark above, which piqued his interest to further investigate. A characteristic that both Slughorns house and Harry’s original home shared apart from being generally disturbed(blown up/ made to look violent). Another aspect of Dumbldore, at least in respect to dealing with Harry and Voldemort, was that he did his utmost to gather every speck of information he could. Going so far as to perform memory charms on Morfin Gaunt to extract information. It seems to me that it is at least possible that Dumbledore would have been interested to know or learn about the powerful and strange magic that occurred in the house that night. It would have been a powerful draw for him, as he is known to have a soft spot for powerful magical knowledge and also knowledge regarding Harry and Voldemort. We also know that he could enter unseen because, while we are not sure he is an animagus like Peter, he could definitely become invisible. At the time he had the ability to make himself invisible as well as possessing the cloak. We know he sent Hagrid to recover Harry, and we know that at least 3 people were in the house that night. I think it is at least worth considering that Dumbledore would visit the scene at some point to investigate for himself, because he trusts in his own investigative abilities especially in uncovering and understanding more abstract areas of magic. This must be at least taken into consideration I feel. Why didn’t Dumbledore visit? Because if he did, he would definitely have found the wand. Or is it that the wand was taken before he arrived to investigate? This also stirs another question in my brain. Lily and James’s bodies WERE there that night. We know this from Snapes memories. Who recovered their bodies? Surely they were not left to rot. They have graves. And those graves must contain their bodies. Or else there are two sets of bones still in the house to this day, which I feel is highly unlikely as it would be disrespectful to the dead. So someone had to recover the bodies. Who was it?

      Inside theory... : I used to work at the WB studio tour. It was AlfonsonCuaron who introduced the personalised wands in PoA, film 3. Films 1 and 2 everyone's wands were almost identical, then everyone had heavily individualised wands.
      To justify this, we used to suppose that the wand arrived plain, then grew and changed gradually over time being used :)
      In this theory, maybe Voldy's wand only turned bony and crooked when he started making horcruxes etc

    A bigger question I have is why did the Death Eaters who were imprisoned in Azkaban not have their wands snapped and were able to get them back after they escape? Considering how Hagrid had his wand snapped after he was expelled for something that was essentially an accident, why would the Ministry keep the wands of Bellatrix and other convicted Death Eaters who were serving life sentences in Azkaban in storage and not destroy them? It's not like any of them would have any further use for their wands as they are prisoners. Furthermore if they did get their wands back, it would be very bad for the Wizarding World.

    • @masterphoenixharp

      It could be possible those aren't their original wands and they stole/went in disguise to get new ones, or they had spare wands. They could have also hidden their wands (as I'm not sure it ever says the ministry took them) knowing they could be captured soon/use a house elf (like dobby) or something to take the wands and hide them since house elves are immune to anti-apparation jinxes and won't betray them, if they are captured in battle. Someone also mentioned it is possible Lucius Malfoy used his influence to take them back. There is also the chance they had someone in the ministry who was able to take them and was not found/got caught after the fact.
      If the ministry did keep them, I suppose they would do so only as incriminating evidence via priori incantatem or because of some other reason like wanting to keep them as a reminder of the horrors they committed or that they managed to defeat them. I mean, the fact they didn't give them the death sentence could also be considered strange.

      Voldemort treated his followers as extensions of his will. If he was physically unable to wield his wand, when he desired to kill, having the lackey attending him use the more powerful wand according to his wishes would make sense. I have another theory about how the wand could have been found by Wormtail. After Voldemort disappears Sirius finds it in the wreckage and takes it without thinking about it. When he tracks down Wormtail he goes a bit crazy after Wormtail blows up the street and the aurors find him with Voldemort's wand, which means more evidence against Sirius and why they think he did it. Then Wormtail who is still nearby as a rat steals the wand before it can offically be used as evidence which is why we would never hear about this.

    My theory is slightly different than yours: I think Peter went to the Potters house right after they died (or maybe even accompanied Voldemort there, waiting outside?) and searched the house right away for his master, finding only the wand and taking it somewhere else to hide it. Because I think the ministry would at least check the place to see if Voldemort ist really gone (and someone had to retrieve Lily and James' bodies so they could be buried 😭💔). If the wand had still been there at this point, I'm sure someone would have found it. But Peter did intend to join Voldemort as soon as he rose to power again, so I'm sure he was eager to present him with his wand, like you said. And I think he had time to do all this, because we know he was still free to run about by the time Harry was rescued, because Sirius met Hagrid in Godric's Hollow and hadn't been arrested yet. And it could've taken him a few days to find Peter, I don't think we know when exactly their duel happened. So Peter could have had enough time to hide the wand somewhere only he could find it and retrieve it 12 years later when he escaped from Hogwarts to go and look for Voldemort.
    If the wand HAD still been at the house 10 years later, Voldemort could've just ordered Quirrel to get it (maybe he even did but Quirrel came back empty handed?), and he would, as you have said, prefer to use his own wand over Quirrels.
    I really enjoyed this video, it's so much fun to think about the backstory of Harry Potter!

    There is also another possibility: Part of the house was still hidden by the charm.
    The part destroyed by the rebounding killing curse might have revealed a large part of it, but maybe not all of it.
    Sirius was in the secret for sure, so he could visit his best friend, even if Peter was the keeper.
    They could have gone in to retrieve Harry without issue.
    Harry was in the house, and one of the protected, so he could see the full house. We don't know how much Hermione could see.
    Everyone else probably saw part, or a portion, + the plaque, as a symbol or place of pilgrimage.
    Anyone else couldn't just walk in and search the place, as they would be blocked by the charm still. The secret keeper never died, so all those in the secret didn't become themselves secret keepers, and still couldn't reveal it fully. Voldy's wand may just have flown in a part still hidden.

    In half blood prince when Harry and dumbledore are getting the fake locket horcrux, why doesn’t Harry just use auguamenti to shoot water directly from his wand into dumbledore’s mouth instead of trying to scoop water from the lake with the ladle (?) that was already in the basin? Harry didn’t need to get attacked by the inferi, dumbledore could’ve gotten rehydrated and regained a decent amount of strength before going back to Hogwarts, and the entire rest of the book could’ve gone differently from then on out.

    • @queentroller2865
      @queentroller2865 3 года назад +1

      I had the same thought, but since it's my favorite book I like to think the basin had an aquatic magnetism charm on it so evwn if he had tried that, the stream would have rerouted away from his mouth. There would never have been a chance for Dumbledore to survive the potion, that's why he brought Harry.

    • @desmondgentle1474

      Because that much sense would have deprived us of that pure NIGHTMARE FUEL that was the Inferi attack.

    • @coolnerdlll6053

      Dumbledore was always going to die. That's why he tells Harry to find Snape when they get back to Hogwarts. Yeah, he didn't plan on Draco getting the Death Eaters into the castle, but he still would have had Snape kill him that night. As for Harry not using Aguamenti, it's a lame excuse, but he might have been panicking. Or there was a curse that would have made the water dissipate on contact with Dumbledore's mouth.

    • @robbevanooteghem7429
      @robbevanooteghem7429 3 года назад

      Dumbledore was already dying because off the curse, he planned his death. When they returned he specifically asked for Snape instead off madam Pomfrey because he wants Snape to end his suffering. He probably planned to die before the end off the schoolyear because he wanted Draco to “succeed” in his task, thats why he petrifies Harry and doesn’t defend himself when he hears someone approaching.

    Before watching, I see two possibilities:
    1. Pettigrew went back and got it and hid it somewhere
    2. It was turned into the Ministry as evidence and one of his servants there stole it (possibly Lucius, or Barty Crouch Sr. under the Imperius Curse).

  • @frantisekvrana3902

    Pettigrew probably stashed it somewhere when Voldemort blew himself up, then returned for it after the events of Prisoner of Azkaban.
    5:30 Remember, the exact location was protected by a Fidelius Charm. Only the secret keeper could reveal it. This was Peter Pettigrew. This does open a plot hole about how Hagrid got Harry without knowing Pettigrew was the secrt keeper. Perhaps Sirius handed Harry to him before he went after Pettgrew?
    8:59 Ah, here it is. Sirius was probably too angry to search for wands. As for Hagrid, we don't know that he got in.
    9:25 That is indeed weird. I did not remember the order of events, so I had to check. Harry was there before, so he would have been able to get there anyway, but he should not have been able to lead Hermione to the house, as Pettigrew was still alive at that point. Fidelius charm must have really been dead.
    10:50 Love this part

    • @maeganroberts2198
      @maeganroberts2198 Год назад

      Once the subject of the fidelius charm is dead, the charm stops working. Therefore James and Lily dying made the charm stop working. The reason everyone could see the house from that point on is because the charm was basically removed

    As far as Harry's defense against Voldemort's magic, we can't ignore the fact that a horcrux can and will defend itself, and Voldemort's horcruxes are extra powerful. In the Battle of the Five Potters (as the movie shows it) Harry seems to be almost unconscious with something else taking control. The horcrux was defending itself. It was essentially Voldemort versus Voldemort in that moment.

    I always thought, that despite the explanation of the twin cores and priori incantatem, what really made them connect is the horcrux inside Harry and that the twin core explanation was just to hide the secret that Harry was a horcrux. That also explains why the wands connected when Voldemort was using Lucius Malfoy's wand

    • @hardeslaper
      @hardeslaper 3 года назад

      I love this theory. It also explains why there wouldn't be more 'issues' of twin/triple/more core wands between duelling wizards, since many more wands are made from the same source.
