Alternate reason Voldemort chose that first Halloween: it was the only day he wouldn't be noticed. By that time, he was very well-known, and most people knew what he looked like. If Lord Voldemort showed up just anywhere, everyone would run and hide, and James, Lily and Harry would certainly know to get away. But if he went on Halloween, he just has to wear a big dark cloak, and he'll blend right in. In fact, in a flashback in Deathly Hallows, one of the trick-or-treaters even compliments him on his costume.
my only question would be, tho a running joke, most wizards dont even know what a rubber duck is all about lol tho a global sort of holiday might be more understood, i feel like voldemort is so full to the brim with hubris he would never even consider learning anything bout muggles, being animals in his eyes.
but - but - they were literally protected by the Fidelius Charm, that no one knew where they were, unless the order knew, but even then, would they not keep it hidden from as many people as possible, just in case Peter (the secret keeper) died (naturally or in battle). They would obviously end up with all of the order walking around, knowing where the Potters are and Voldy could have his pick of who to torture it out of. So even if people knew he was around, they couldn't exactly pass a message to the Potters, unless they wrote to them, which would be too late anyway.

The Halloween history lesson is a fantastic explanation for why JK Rowling would have chosen Halloween, as for an in universe reasoning: Halloween was the first feast of the school year and the events in books 1-3 were attacks that the perpetrators needed to happen while they could be sure everyone would be out of the way, such as attending a feast. These couldn’t have happened at the welcome feast because Quirrel needed time to learn about the stone’s defenses, Riddle needed time to posses Ginny, and Sirius needed time to walk all the way to Hogwarts on foot as a dog. If we do want to go the curse route, however, there is a better explanation than Voldemort cursing Harry while he has no powers. What if there was a follower so intensely loyal to Voldemort that he’d do anything to get him back? This follower would likely be furious with Harry and with the day of Voldemort’s downfall. This follower could have been the one to curse Halloween, allowing each one to be a small day of victory for the Dark Lord to make up for his massive loss. This curse, then, would only end once this follower was utterly destroyed, just as with Voldemort’s curse on the DADA job. I have a theory of what Harry's patronus really should have been. He should have been a mongoose because they are reputed for being specifically skilled at killing snakes. They are also known as being very brave and courageous. Another thing is they are both very small and slim and fast moving and very hard to catch. They are also fairly intelligent and can be taught simple tricks. There is a story called "Rikki Tikki Tavi" and it about a short-tempered mongoose that is very clever and nimble and saves an entire family and garden from a family of snakes
I always thought it was dumb that Harry's patronus was a stag JUST because his dad was a stag. I get the meaning, but his patronus should've been a *dragon* why? According to mugglenet on the dragon patronus: One of the most powerful and formidable creatures of the magical world, dragons are ambitious and dominant. With the ability to breathe fire, they quickly assert themselves, garnering both fear and respect from those around them. They are unafraid to take risks and prefer to live by their own set of rules. They are quick to lead and do not back down from a challenge. Dragons are strong in their convictions and will stand for what they believe is right. Those with a dragon for a Patronus are sure to be fierce fighters, and the Dementors better be ready for a challenge! If that isn't Harry Potter to a T I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS.
I think the sword usually resides in the headmaster's office with the hat of the first headmaster... The sorting hat. And only when the hat travels from that place can it be used as a "port hole" for the sword. They are forever bound together in loyalty to the school and the headmaster which is why Snape can place the sword in the pool, thereby entrusting the sword to Harry in an act of loyalty to the school as it's headmaster.

As well we are accidentally ignoring the fourth celebration at this time: Samhain. Which is not only based in the Celtic lands (Which does include Scotland, London, Cornwall and others) Which is traditionally done by placing a carved turnip outside to ward off cruel and harmful spirits/beings. With this it's also known traditionally for 4 things with in that: it marked the passing of sumer to the cold winter (which was one the times that Harry and Voldemort were born and is known as time of harvests. (generally harvesting being seen as the plant form harvesting but is also associated with soul harvesting of hellhounds and the wild hunt)), children and adults would weare masks and costumes so no wicked being was able to attack them. As well this was the time that the VEIL between life, death, and the otherworldly (other worldly could very very easily be tapping at either death eaters being on the other side of war or generally witch and wizards) Which would later be cultivated into the church to make the tressing from paganism to Christianity less draining.
I think they didn't include that since JK is Christian and would base this stuff around Christian stuff and not pagan. Since she probably only learned about the Christian side of things
I've got a Harry Potter based challenge for you (I have suggested this before) Have you seen the film Yesterday, basically it's about a struggling musician finds that the Beatles (popular British band in 70's) never existed so releases thier songs as his own but also finds other things don't exist like cigarettes and Coca Cola (only Pepsi) and right at the end discovers Harry Potter doesn't exist so it got my thinking if you both woke up one morning to find you were the only 2 people on the planet who remember the Harry Potter books (JK Rowling never wrote them or maybe was never even born) so tried to sit down and rewrite them from memory how well you'd do! So I challenge you to with no internet or anything other than a blank document or even paper and pen write as much of the series as possible with no additional revision before and you can't read anything Harry Potter or anything while you are doing it (when you stop for lunch or something) then you have to compare it to the original, obviously I'm not saying litterally write the whole series but maybe write sections of the books or even try to write one book (an early shorter one)! Sorry I know this is long but it would be a great video!

The sword does not 'go' anywhere. It stays where it is until the next time it is summoned in need. Hence why it could stay on display anywhere for any amount of time, and the ministry could seriously consider it as part of Dumbledore's will (even if they do point out it was not his to give).

Well, it's always a chance to get back at Harry, like buying Dudley the most expensive and cool looking outfit and Harry gets like a bedsheet. But then again, the people on Privet Drive are rich and presumably sort of stuffy, so I doubt they'd hand out any candy.
I would like to point out that the "Dumbledore has to be the one to hire them" hypothesis doesn't hold water because... Umbridge
🤔 it wouldn't truly eliminate it though. She just was the one that was shoved in there when he was slow to hire someone for the next term. She didn't last either, but not necessarily because it was cursed, so much as because she was.... Umbridge. And then a replacement was necessary again.

I think Halloween has a special significance in the Wizarding World. Christmas is called Yule, so Haloween might be something like "All Hallow's Eve." It might have special magical properties, like the Summer and Winter Solstices in Last Airbender and Korra.
To be honest, Dumbledore just has a list of people to be DATDA teacher until Harry’s fifth year

@@andreailas3906 ooooh that's good too
I always thought it was dumb that Harry's patronus was a stag JUST because his dad was a stag.

Which is not only based in the Celtic lands (Which does include Scotland, London, Cornwall and others)
Which is traditionally done by placing a carved turnip outside to ward off cruel and harmful spirits/beings. As well this was the time that the VEIL between life, death, and the otherworldly (other worldly could very very easily be tapping at either death eaters being on the other side of war or generally witch and wizards)
Which would later be cultivated into the church to make the tressing from paganism to Christianity less draining.
I think they didn't include that since JK is Christian and would base this stuff around Christian stuff and not pagan. Since she probably only learned about the Christian side of things

@Madilyn Law You're doomed. We all are.

Martyrdom is not just an early church being. St. Maximilian Kolbe is a martyr from WW2 in auchwitz
Also, kinda sad to see they didn't mention Dia de los muertos, where in mexican tradition the dead return to the living to visit loved ones. And on Halloween in book 4 James and Lily came back through the wand thing I always forget the name of.
James and lily coming through the wand (priori incantatem) happened at the end of the term that year(Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts). It was probably May, definitely not during Halloween.
8:48 Fudge says in The Prisoner of Azkaban that the Fidelius charm was performed about a week before the betrayal (that is, Halloween), so if they were in hiding as early as 31 July, Pettigrew did not become secret keeper as soon as it happened.
