I like how right before this Vinny was talking about how he could play DOS games for his whole life and never run out and then nearly every game is a repeat
It has very high quality animations and a star cast, but it flopped commercially, Virgin made a shit job publicizing it and it came out when the interest for Graphic Adventures was on decline. The worst part is that it isn't even finished. Virgin had the Galaxy Brain idea of forcing the studio to cut half of the content of the game and leave it for a sequel. SO the game ends in a cliffhanger, but because it bombed, the rest of the story is now pretty much lost forever, even if large parts of it were already finished.
Looking over Vinny's list (what I could see of it anyway), it would be neat to see some playthrough's of Dark Seed and Dark Seed 2 some day. Also, Harvester as well if it's there.
I've realized that at this point, the odds are actually higher that Vinny has seen every shitty strange game, making unique content harder and harder for him, in which he must rely on indie games to fuel Sunday.
Look, it doesn't matter if Vinny played a game before. If it's not on fullsauce it literally makes all the difference to those who couldn't possibly have seen it before.
Wow, I have the absolute vaguest memory of playing that camel game, however brief, exactly 26 years ago. I've always had a shit fucking memory and yet I instantly recognized that weird game. The human mind is quite something indeed.
That Dragon Quest knockoff puzzle game is truly that, lol. The hero art is a straight-up copy of the female hero from the DQIV package art, dood. The irony, as I'm also wrapping up DQIV while watching this, with my Toriyama DQ art book within distance. Truly a lifestyle.
90% of people start getting into DQ thinking it's just a generic swords and sorcery JRPG and before they've even finshed whatever game they're on end up obsessed with it. That's just how it do. Simple but effective game design to an insane degree, great artwork, and writing that nails the feel of oldschool fantasy adventure perfectly. There have been some slip-ups (DQII and imo VII) but the bar for quality is consistently high.
@@warbossgegguz679 Lol, I think we've actually had a discussion around this caliber before. I'm pretty sure we're already proper, well-established DQ fans. Have you played X yet? I started it around a month or two ago, dood.
@@Rave265 I haven't figured out all the fuckery necessary to get it up and running on my PC yet... In the meantime I've been playing the shit out of DQB2 since I was waiting for the PC release, and I'm running through DQVIII on my 3DS. I tried the VII remake just to see if it would click this time around and yeah... no. The localization is obviously in line with the post-DQ ones, which is always welcome, but the restrictive party composition is still fuckin bean, the hunting for tablet pieces is still annoying and tedious, and THERE'S SO MUCH DIALOG and segments of doing NOTHING for hours. I get the amount of storage CDs afforded was a huge game-changer for narrative in video games, but holy shit giant exposition dumps and walls of text aren't an engaging narrative. I mean, it's not like DQII where the game _actively pissed me off_ but it's still one of the only times where I got bored playing DQ. I can handle grinding because the game and combat system is built around it. Battles are fast and there's a sense of progression. I can't handle huge stretches of doing NOTHING or just running around for the sake of the plot. And it's even worse in VII because each island is a bunch of randos so my emotional investment in nonexistent. @@warbossgegguz679 Meh, I can relate, dood. It sucks not having anyone you can share opinions with. Take it from a hardcore DQ and Disgaea fan, lol. Speaking of, maybe it's because I have a high tolerance for most games, but the dialogue in VII 3DS I really wasn't too worried about. The beginning, sure, since it took roughly 2 hours at the least to reach your first battle- but I guess I just find it easy to get invested in the world and however long anyone has to talk, lol. Now, IMAGINE if they added voices, like for DQXI. I'd probably get annoyed, since I can't really pick up the speed of the dialogue without skipping lines. That's proper frustrating. As for X, I've been in-and-out of the Switch version, and it's easily the most accessible one, imo. @@Rave265 ironically as a dyslexic I kind of appreciate Voice Acting in RPGs, so that would have been a bit of an improvement for me. I can handle story heavy RPGs. Hell DQXI might me by favorite entry thus far aside from DQIII in part for it's narrative. I think the best narratives in the series are carried by their characters/cast. That's why narratively my favorite games are DQIV, VIII, IX, and XI. The narratives may not be super original, but the characters are a huge part of what's memorable about them. Just like in Tolkien and the other authors that influence it. Bit in addition to the party comp being kind of trash, Kiefer and Maribelle are annoying and/or boring, and you get basically no other major party members. This combined with the lack of gameplay synergy and weird disjointed narrative made it a chore to sit through. The visuals were great, but imo it's still among the weaker entries in the series. But I can't blame it that much because like I said, CD storage was kind of a novelty so it was just experimenting with what was the style at the time. It's a situation similar to my retrospective view of DQI. It's not like DQII where it has a ton of good ideas all implemented in LITERALLY THE WORST POSSIBLE WAYS. It's just a relic of a different time.
In case anyone was wondering what the story is for the puzzle game - a happy and beautiful kingdom lived peacefully, one night the princess went out to enjoy the full moon, suddenly a foul wind came over her and she let out a frightened scream, by the time nearby people came to see what was going on she had already disappeared, all that was left was a note from the Queen of the North Kingdom saying she kidnapped the princess and if the king wanted her back he had to renounce his throne, pissed off about it he made a plea to the brave warriors of the kingdom but nobody answered, finally Little Ke, a young blacksmithing child who was already in love with the princess answered the call, there was a legend of a magical bow that is the bane of the the Queen of the North, Little Ke went out to find the bow. So logically the next thing you see is a puzzle game with mice, cats, and cheese.
Whoever's compiling the gamelist for him should've doublechecked the games he's already played. maybe get Vinny to play Broken Sword, PowerSlave, Hexen, Rama, etc.
I saw a camel shooting lasers and instantly knew who was responsible for that insanity. Vinny should do a whole segment dedicated to Jeff Minter games. There is at least three decades' worth of material to cover on platforms ranging from Atari 8-bit and C64 all the way to iOS and PS4, nearly all of which somehow involve zoo animals shooting at things like toilets and Mandelbrot sets while neon lights flash and obnoxious sounds play nonstop.
