ok, names: L to R Cesar de la Rosa, newest member of the group. Jose Rosario Jnr, guest performer (also featured in My Mother Told Me), Eli (say it elly) Jacobson, bald tenor, at the front is Layne Stein, beatbox/vocal percussion, and Geoff Castellucci, bass, who has his own channel of low bass covers. I agree with your reaction. It does that to me too. They are more often known for beautiful harmonies such as Tennessee Whisky, or Can't Help Falling in Love, but then they do this kind of thing, try also Warriors. Queen in 5 Minutes is another great theatrical piece. A mini musical if you will. Good luck. Once you start with VoicePlay there's no looking back. :)

Each vocalist had their own character, and acted the STUFFING out of them. Ceasar was semi-tragic: I was pretty, once; Eli was manic; Lane was quietly dangerous, while Geoff and Jose were clasic pirate captains (They have GOT to offer Jose a permanent place in the group!). Meanwhile, their singing is on POINT! Eli is hitting C5s like he bought them on sale, while Geoff is mining F1s (Then there was the two-octave upward glissando he pulled off mid-song!).

And another reaction video bites the dust. I don't think I've watched a reaction video to this song by Voiceplay that hasn't left them totally speechless :)
    Vocalists are:
Geoff Castelucci The low bass singer. Has a 4.5 octave range - Try the song 'Oogie Boogie' to see him belt out around e4 and then drop to an e1 with no effort.
Eli (pronounced Ellie) is the tenor with the powerful rock voice who appears to belt out with no effort at all.
Cesar (as in Julius Ceasar), was the soft high voice at the beginning, he can do an almost childlike voice sometimes and has a great belting tenor too.
Layne is the beatboxer and can also stand in for Geoff with the bass when needed, also a great tenor.
And of course Jose Rosario who started the song as a feature singer with the group.
The group has changed over the past year or so, but I really hope the ones in it now remain, they are so perfectly matched and can adapt their voices and style to almost any featured singer they sing with. Watch the Moana medley, the Little Mermaid medley and others with featured singers to see how easily they adapt.
In addition, the group always dresses up and play the parts in the video as well as singing, unlike many other a capella groups, they are true performers and not just a singing group.
Also, if you get the chance, try Geoff Castelucci on his own who does all the 4 parts to a load of different songs. "Misty Mountains Cold" has to be his best so far though. If you want bass that will resonate right through your bones, he's the one to listen to.

  • @Juilene1965

"The bald guy" is Eli (pronounced Elly) he's the little rockstar tenor of the group and so talented!. Geoff Castellucci is the human subwoofer bass...he has a 5 octave range! Amazing! Cesar (the one in white with the milky eye) is their newest member...the perfect addition to an already perfect group. Layne is the vocal percussion, and nobody beatboxes like Layne. Jose Rosario Jr. is the one in the middle with the beard...he's collaborated with them before and I wish they would just make him a full member because he fits in so well with them. They are the Theater Kids of acapella. Enjoy your journey down the Voiceplay rabbit hole!

Wonderful response, it's going to be fun watching you discover them. Mostly either Geoff (bass) or Layne (beatbox) do the arrangements. Who ever does the arrangement usually does EVERYTHING. On this one, Eli took the lead role on lighting, but the arranger and the vision were Geoff's. Layne and Geoff are both founding members (1997) and have been singing together since middle school.
One of the things that blows me away about them is the way they seamlessly incorporate featured singers (and new members as necessary.) Geoff commented in one of the vids that "it's important to arrange for the voices you have, not the ones you wish you had" and they must follow that rule fanatically. Everyone that joins them sounds amazing.

  • @LunaKat9

Besides their talent, VoicePlay are remarkable to me, just like Home Free, because they are independent artists. Neither group fits in a “mainstream box” and they are both gaining notoriety without the support of the musical “industry.” (By the way the same can be said about Peter Hollens.) I don’t always like VP’s arrangements, sometimes the use of sub harmonics feels forced to me, but their originality keeps my curiosity alive. Moreover, I don’t know of many other groups, especially a cappella, that have survived so many changes in line-up. Geoff, Layne, and Eli are such a strong core group that they can welcome guest singers seamlessly in their midst. Some of VP’s less theatrical covers, like “Can’t help falling in love”or some of their Christmas songs are outstanding :)

Ones I love well apart from all of them are my mother told me, butter, warriors and all the Disney melodies that they do.

Welcome to VoicePlay! You're in for *such* a fun ride. And if you love theatricality, you have definitely stumbled upon the right group. It is well worth mentioning that besides being capable of amazing performances such as this one, VoicePlay does nearly all the rest of the work as well. Layne Stein (vocal percussion and baritone) and Geoff Castellucci (bass vocalist, and sometimes baritone, and occasionally tenor) create about 99% of their arrangements (this was one of Geoff's). Eli Jacobson (pronounced Ellie) is the bald tenor with the rock-and-roll rasp does the lighting. Whoever does the arrangement also conceives and directs the video (makeup- if it's extreme- and camerawork are the two things most consistently subbed out), as well as the video editing. Layne also co-owns (along with Tony Wakim, a former VoicePlay member) Pattycake Productions, a video studio where VoicePlay sometimes shoots their videos. Kathy Castellucci, Geoff's wife, is their production manager, and pretty much handles everything behind the scenes, including basic makeup from time to time (and occasionally for more artistic stuff, for Geoff's solo channel, which is also worth checking out. Geoff is his own quartet, quite literally.).
If you look back through their videos, you'll notice that their lineup changes a few times, and that they often have featured artists performing with them. Learning the lineup can be a bit confusing, but I'm sure people will point out who everyone is as you watch more videos. There was a bit of a joke recently about how new VoicePlay fans need to be offered a pamphlet explaining all the changes. Luckily, Layne, Geoff and Eli remain the core of the group in the videos available on RUclips (although Eli isn't a founding member; that was Earl, who left in 2020, and see how it's already getting confusing?), so if you learn them first the others will fall into place eventually. Tony Wakim (baritone), Earl Elkins Jr. (tenor 1), J. None (baritone) and Cesar De La Rosa (baritone) are the other members you'll see.

Anyone seen Bollywood Jingle Bells? Very early effort, and one that tells quite a story within the song. Took a couple of times watching it to believe ALL the characters were Voice Play members, or relatives.

Not sure if this was mentioned or not but Geoff, the base, also arranged this piece and many of the other ones performed via voice play. If you ever were a Halo fan, I strongly recommend that video, Geoff at the time broke the record for the lowest not sang in a professional video.

This is one of their best ever. Please consider a set of over the ear can style headphones. You'll get a lot more of the base than those earbuds can possibly deliver. Voiceplay does a lot of theatrical production along with their songs which just adds to them.

Okay so Voiceplays lineup has changed a bunch in the past few years.
    **Long comment warning**
So Voiceplays lineup when they got famous was
    Earl Elkins Jr.:Tenor
    Eli Jacobson: Tenor 2
    Tony Wakim: Baritone/Tenor
    Geoff Castellucci: Bass
    Layne Stein: Vocal Percussion/Beatbox
In 2016, their baritone, Tony left the group and they were looking for a new one. They brought in J.None who who eventually left the group as well earlier this year to join the Navy. Their tenor, Earl, also left the group in mid-2020. They recently replaced J.None with Cesar De La Rosa. So in this video
Top left: Cesar De La Rosa, Tenor 2/High baritone
Middle: Jose Rosario Jr., Special guest
Top right: Eli Jacobson, I think he moved up to Tenor 1 when Earl left
    Bottom left: Layne Stein, Beatboxer
    Bottom Right: Geoff Castellucci, Bass
If that was confusing I apologize, I’m not the best at explaining things, but quick sidenote, Geoff, the bass, had a vocal range of B0-A5, amazing right? I enjoyed the reaction and can’t wait to see more from you :)

VoicePlay is often very theatrical. They have had the most change of members over the course of their videos so there are some other names yet to learn. For theatrical try “My Mother Told Me”, “Oogie Boogie Song” or “Little Mermaid Medley”. For non-theatrical try “You’ve My Best Friend” “Bang” or my favorite “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. Please don’t miss reactions to their bass, Geoff Castellucci’s channel “Sixteen Tons” and “House of the Rising Sun” plus more…not to be missed

Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci has a vocal range of B0-A5 he also has his own channel that he has some great videos with him and (3-7 copies of him) and he also has a teaching video of how he learned to do sub-harmonics and such... Voiceplay has been around for 10 years and had changed a few members over the time
Back row left to right Cesar de la Rosa (newest member) Jose Rosario Jr (guest has been in a few of there videos) abd Eli (pronounced elly) front row Layne Stein Beatbox and sometimes sings as well and Geoff (pronounced Jeff) one of the 3 or 4 lowest bass singers, You may enjoy there "Halo Theme" video (be sure to watch the dedication) there are so many good videos they have and they are releasing a new one on thanksgivings (with 2 guest singers) they also have a few Christmas themed videos (and so dose Geoff on his channel)

Saw VoicePlay and had the subscribe!!! My favorite group out there. I haven't found anything of theirs that I didn't love, and I do mean love. My acapella play list is basically them with a few Home Free and a couple PTX. My suggestions are, Halo Theme, Moana Medley, Little Mermaid Medley, and Oogie Boogie Song. For theatricality definitely check out Queen in 5 Minutes. For everyday songs Carry On My Wayward Son, Daddy Sang Bass, Boy Bands in 5 Minutes and Panic in 4 Minutes PT 1 and 2. Then go to Geoff Castellucci's solo channel for Take Me Home Country Roads, House of the Rising Sun, and I know Halloween is over but he did the Monster Mash this year and it is phenomenal!!!
Also don't know where The Nightmare Before Christmas stands for seasonal, some do it for Halloween and some do it for Christmas, but VP has 4 covers from that. Oogie Boogie Song, What's This, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, and This is Halloween.

I recommend their cover of Justin Timberlake's "Just Sing," which was done during the depth of the pandemic (May, 2020), and all the people were recording their own parts individually, then blended. It's a fundraising video for a musicians' relief fund, and they pulled in *all* their former members (up to that point), and colleagues they've met through performing. If you play it with captions on, you can read who all the guest singers are.

Tim Foust made an appearance and the captions compared his and Geoff's hair -- they have the same grey patch. So funny. A wonderful video I can listen to over and over.
