I genuinely love this series of videos. They are informative, quick, & do a great job of comparing & contrasting a great deal of vehicles n a manner which matters most for the enthusiast consumer, while displaying superlative driving skills. Cheers on the refreshing, educational & lithe series!
This is what smoking tyre is all bout. I love these clips. So informative and short. Unlike some channels, he's test driving car's the average person can buy.
These are really great videos, Matt. I love the one take format so we get the whole uncut experience, I love hearing your realtime feedback and experiences of the car and relative to other cars, and how they're released one day at a time so it keeps the fun going over a longer period of time. Thanks for doing these. It's a lot of fun to watch and enjoy. :)
i already know some person is going to be mad because you mentioned the ford. it's not even that big of a deal, i don't know why it bothers people. good review anyhow, matt.
It's the first time I've heard a "reviewer" knock the ATS's steering over any BMW, too. Maybe this Caddy was used very heavily in this event - kinda like the CTS-V sport in his other video. He just comes off a bit negative and bias in this review. Love his channel and podcast nonetheless.
this is the same motor that was in my cobalt ss but just the 3rd generation with better flowing and cooling heads....... this motor is bulletproof...i was tuned on e47 since 22k miles and was still running strong a 90k miles. i was fully bolted and made 360whp and 430 trq ......and Matt is entitled to his own opinion but everyone i knew loved the sound of mine but of coarse i had an exhaust..... atleast ur hearing the real motor not some sound application that ford uses. all i can say is Matt needs to drive a simple bolted one and then give his opinion, because my car was faster then the ms3,srt4,st and sti around a track and definately in a straight line.
y'all should tape a black card to the top right of the camera for the inside dash cam, it would get rid of all the nasty lens flare and not confuse the camera's auto exposer. It would take 30 extra seconds to set up but would help lots...great videos, keep them coming!
boostang1 I think the Fiesta is more fun than the Focus dynamically, but the Focus is the bigger, more comfortable, more luxurious car. Depends on your priorities, but I like both.
For 20k these cars are a steel. Solid platform with a good after market. I'd buy one of these with 6mt and AWD over a 18-19 Civic si. Shop around the sedans usually got for 18-24k with around 20k miles.
+Matt Farah, I know you won't see this now that it's been out a while, but did you get a chance to review the mazda 3? I think it's an excellent car and wanted to know your opinion
Great video and great car. But the ATS doesn't directly compete with the 228i, it's meant to compete with the 3-series. Supposedly Cadillac is bringing in a smaller car to tackle the 228i and the MB CLA
Tyler McGowan That may be totally true, but they are about the same price, and I had driven the 228i earlier in the day so it seemed a more apt comparison.
I believe my man is biased at the ats for a reason? Just about every other review ever has way more good than bad! Not him! In fact i have one n pretty awesome!!! 2.0t sound? What do you expect, a v8 growl? Come on dude....
Saw an article about the ATS V. Its not confirmed but it will probably have a 3.6 liter twin turbocharged V6. My question is why. If they'd put the same LSA V8 in it as the CTS V has, it would be a killer. As for the new CTS V, they should give it an even more powerful engine.
DesertStateInEu In many ways, they can be. Turbo engines have greater efficiency, suffer less from altitude, and are more emissions friendly. There's a reason many car makers are going to turbos in there cars. The downsides of turbo engines are there: increased cost, decreased lifespan, and for the tuners out there, there's only so far you can push a turbo'd motor without getting into some exotic solutions (quite literally, in some cases like meth injection).
DesertStateInEu not necessarily. The reason it seems that turbocharged cars"wear out"or have a seemingly shorter life is because people drive them like...well turbocharged performance vehicles. Alot of times they're built and driven at their limits. Add water/meth and keep your foot outta it and they'll last like any other car...easier said than done though...
Love your videos and your channel mr fara. Willow springs is somewhere I would love to drive one day. With a tire shredding rwd car. What would be your ideal car for that track?
Drove the car for a few days recently. Very good balance and composure. Good brakes. Numb steering. Really bad noise (cheap and soulless both engine and exhaust). Does not feel like 270bhp. Less lag than either the Audi 2.0T or MERCEDES 2.0T engines. Top end feels weaker than either of those two also but it may be just my perception. Manual transmission is a great option but the shifter is worse than either Audi or BMW. Clutch engagement is on par with BMW but not as good as Audi in my opinion.
+Tim Tursonoff Car & Driver recently ran a 14.1 @ 101 mph through the 1/4 mile in the 272 HP / 295 TQ, 2015 ATS 2.0T Coupe 6 speed manual. It did 0-130 mph in only 25.4 seconds. C&D got a 2012 328i 6 speed manual from 0-130 mph in 26.4 seconds... That same 328i ran a 14.3 @ 99 mph in the 1/4 mile for reference. That 101 mph trap speed by the ATS is what matters the most as it indicates the kind of power the car is making regardless of traction. I don't know if you drove the 2013-2014 ATS 2.0T, but the revised 2015 2.0T is definitely making over 270 HP running those kind of numbers.
how much would a track day at big willow or streets cost? All i found so far is $10 admission, but i don't think that includes the actual driving. I need to stretch the legs of my ST lol.
Josh Sollitto Most track days in SoCal go through trackday companies. Shift S3ctor (not a typo), Speed District, and others will rent the track and then charge between $150-$300 for a day of track time.
Josh Sollitto depends on how often you'd use the track. If you really want to get into proper racing and you're going to be out there every weekend with a race car, SCCA or NASA have lots of options. If you just want to go out and run your street car at the track for fun and practice, try a few of the trackday companies. They are generally small companies so you'll see a lot of the same people at their events.
Josh Sollitto if you check our calendar on our website, you can come drive with the organization's track day that weekend. There are other options of course depending on what you want to do. Call our office at (661) 256-6666 and we can help you get set up!
+itsjr516 windows down so if you crash and the door is jammed they can reach in and pull you out. Nothing like having a journalist trapped in a burning car to ruin a track day.
TheSmokingTire Hmm I think the Caddy has more life in it with a tune since it has the bigger turbo and Ford is going to stick with baby snails. But they should be a good comparison if you can find a decent low mileage ats with the performance bits.
Matt showing his age... dropping an Adam Sandler reference that _maybe_ 20% of the people watching this will get. EDIT: But apparently 100% of the people who got it commented on it. Sheesh. Just scrolled down, my bad!
Asterisk *A/C on full blast. Also, why don't you like the info-tainment system? I think this is one part of interiors GM and Chrysler do really well. I hate the joystick input on the German cars, and their graphics looked dated too. The Cadillac touch screens almost feel like tablets.
The last thing I want to do while driving is have to precision point at things on the dashboard like a tablet. It's much easier to lay my hand on a controller and do inputs from there. Probably explains the huge amount of front-end collisions i see involving Teslas on a daily basis.
Matt Farah maybe it takes some getting used to, but I never felt like the joystick thing on BMW/Benz was as intuitive/quick as just touching "radio" or just dialing by pushing the actual numbers. It's like a rotary phone vs touch-tone dialing.
AR 15s My favorite is a combination of touch screen and scroll knobs, like ford's first-generation SYNC and the Volt's MyTouch use. They have scrolling for the key features you need and the touch screen for the more advanced stuff you wouldn't really do while driving anyway.
That engine was not a pleasant singer. If you were not giving your opinion in words I would have muted the video. How does a car company send out a final product with flaws that are so obvious at first glance? 2014, get a tech person to make the interface not suck and spend a bit more time on tuning the exhaust to make it sound better than, idk, a fiesta. Seems simple but in big companies we know it is not.
They are catering to their customer base. it is a Cadillac and it is design to be quiet and comfortable, but have the performance factor so it's 60 year old driver can be fooled into thinking he is cool.
The weird thing is that it's essentially the same engine from the turbo Cobalt which sounds good. I'm sure the Cadillac is more muffled so you hear more engine noise.
You've made it clear that the Fiesta ST is a great car, there is no need to mention it in every video. The ATS and the Fiesta are in completely different categories and price ranges, I don't think anyone is cross shopping them. There is no reason to compare them, even if you're just talking about exhaust note. It's getting a little annoying how often the Fiesta is talked about now.
Matt it almost sounds like they're paying you to talk this thing up. On the track that thing looks like a TOTAL HOG. What a sad excuse of a "sports" car, if only the Americans still made a nice coupe. Nice interior though! They understand their market.
This entire series is a Fiesta ST drinking game. I love it.
I like the direction Cadillac is going.
I genuinely love this series of videos. They are informative, quick, & do a great job of comparing & contrasting a great deal of vehicles n a manner which matters most for the enthusiast consumer, while displaying superlative driving skills. Cheers on the refreshing, educational & lithe series!
I really appreciate that Matt picked up on the quality of the electric seat motors.
This is what smoking tyre is all bout. I love these clips. So informative and short. Unlike some channels, he's test driving car's the average person can buy.

I almost choked on my sandwhich when you said "at a medium pace" hahaha. Oh man, good one :D
I immediately got the reference too xD
That Ecotec should wake up nicely once you throw a tune on it
i already know some person is going to be mad because you mentioned the ford. it's not even that big of a deal, i don't know why it bothers people.
good review anyhow, matt.
First time I've ever heard someone knock the ATS' steering vs any BMW
The 228's steering was really really good. We did like the ATS's steering more than the 328 we had last year though.
ah, 228. I think when I heard it I was processing 428.
ATS is a bad ass car :)
TheMARTINFCC is ggg

Congrats on the 300K+ subs tst

Only 1 more vjdeo to make the 11th :( I really liked these kinds of videos you should continue doing one takes.
HAHA, holy fuck. Did you just start singing Adam Sandler's Medium Pace there for a second?
At a medium pace....Holy shit, I haven't thought of that in 15 years.
Really had to stop myself from singing the next few lines of that.
Matt Farah
shampoo bottle comes to mind
I don't know if I would have been able to restrain myself. I would have sang it the rest of the time. Lol
I was waiting for this one!
Nice video! Which car surprised you most on the track of the ones you tested on the day?
the 228i M-Sport was the biggest surprise of the day.
You mention the fiesta st alot , is that car really that good ?
Yes it really is that good.
Do you prefer it to the focus , I'm interested in getting one of the two
boostang1 I think the Fiesta is more fun than the Focus dynamically, but the Focus is the bigger, more comfortable, more luxurious car. Depends on your priorities, but I like both.
Thanks for the replies you guys rock
I love the t coupe ats

Do you think there is gonna be more hope in the 3.6L and/or the rumored twin turbo v6?
+Matt Farah, I know you won't see this now that it's been out a while, but did you get a chance to review the mazda 3? I think it's an excellent car and wanted to know your opinion

Tyler McGowan That may be totally true, but they are about the same price, and I had driven the 228i earlier in the day so it seemed a more apt comparison.
TheSmokingTire That's what I figured. Guess it wouldn't have been fair to compare the ATS to the M4.
Tyler McGowan ATS compete with the BMW 320i/420i
I believe my man is biased at the ats for a reason? Just about every other review ever has way more good than bad! Not him! In fact i have one n pretty awesome!!! 2.0t sound? What do you expect, a v8 growl? Come on dude....

***** Uhh what?
DesertStateInEu because downsizing and turbocharging increases efficiency and better power.
DesertStateInEu

Why do you have to have the windows down?
Love your videos and your channel mr fara. Willow springs is somewhere I would love to drive one day. With a tire shredding rwd car. What would be your ideal car for that track?
matt: im lovin these vids man. how many more cars are you testing???
Just one more tomorrow but we'll keep making more as many as we can.
Matt Farah Yeah this format is great; don't want to take away from the main videos but I really enjoy the casual nature and variety of these.
He is a imposter guys.
Are you gonna drive a z71? I think i saw one in the background of one of these videos.
Lol.. Nice Adam Sandler reference, Matt.
I've watched his other vids on the ats. He didn't like this one before he even sat in it, obviously biased!!!
Might be a stupid question but why do they insist on having the windows down?
How does it compare to the ecoboost mustang
Drove the car for a few days recently. Very good balance and composure. Good brakes. Numb steering. Really bad noise (cheap and soulless both engine and exhaust). Does not feel like 270bhp. Wished I found this vid before purchasing one :/.... but hey, it's waaay better than a Kia optima
Hey Matt can you drive the 2011 genesis coupe 2.0t 6mt on the track ?It's my daily driver and I wanna know what you think.
love the video. More so the Adam Sandler reference (Well done fellow Jew crew)
I can't help but think this engine needs to be in a Cruze
pontiacGXPfan tf
The 228 feels sportier and looks it to
Didn't the 228 have the m package? Does this car have a comparable package? If not, why are you comparing the two?
HDaviator This car had the "sport" package, but I'm comparing the two because I drove them both on the same day and they are roughly the same price.
TheSmokingTire Alright. Fair enough.
Will u do a one take on the mazda3?
Mazdaspeed L no, I didn't get to drive it that day. I'll try to get one down the road though.
thanks for replying. would you like to give opinions about how it compares to CLA and A3 kinda entry level luxury cars these days?
how much would a track day at big willow or streets cost? All i found so far is $10 admission, but i don't think that includes the actual driving. I need to stretch the legs of my ST lol.

Josh Sollitto depends on how often you'd use the track. If you really want to get into proper racing and you're going to be out there every weekend with a race car, SCCA or NASA have lots of options. Whats the point of wanting the windows open?
+itsjr516 windows down so if you crash and the door is jammed they can reach in and pull you out. Nothing like having a journalist trapped in a burning car to ruin a track day.
How does this rank against the EB Mustang on the track?
stevlagrantbulldogs Similar, actually. I think the Mustang may be a bit quicker?
TheSmokingTire

Why would they want you to keep the window down?
Cur8or88 so if you crash they can pull you out without having to smash it.
TheSmokingTire
One imagines if you crash hard enough that you have to be extracted, the windows will be broken already.
DroverChicago yes, but if they are lowered ,they will break inside the doors rather than all over the cabin.
"At a medium pace"
Like, strictly for the medium pace reference.
touche on the sandler reference
AT A MEDIUM PACE
Cmon TheSmokingTire don't just go saying "que still sucks, I assume." I believe it is much improved and totally acceptable.
Unless there have been major changes since the 2014 version I used, which there do not appear to be, it still sucks.
Matt Farah Yep still sucks as well as the touch pad below it. Still has that delayed vibrate.
Lol as an ats owner it's trash

This is NOT your Father's Oldsmobile!
This is NOT an Oldsmobile!
Its a fukking 2,0t what do u want buddy, its a great car smh
Matt it almost sounds like they're paying you to talk this thing up. On the track that thing looks like a TOTAL HOG. What a sad excuse of a "sports" car, if only the Americans still made a nice coupe.
