  • Matt attends the Motor Press Guild's annual track day, where he gets to drive a wide variety of cars at Willow Springs. To Celebrate passing 300,000 RUclips Subscribers, we're uploading 11 videos in 11 days!
    Matt moved over to the Streets of Willow Springs, a smaller, tighter circut for a few of the lower-powered cars. First up, the Honda CRZ with Honda Performance Division accessories! It's got springs, sways, rims, sticky tires, upgraded brakes, exhaust, and a supercharger! Can Honda's aftermarket division inject some life into the maligned hybrid?

    They should've offered a non-hybrid model with a K series engine. I think the sales would be much higher.

    • @stever1412

      That's how the car was originally designed, but laws were changed that dictated engine size to car size without penalty. A k20 in a crz would have required you to pay a heavy gas guzzler tax.

    • @JustinAbroad
      @JustinAbroad 5 лет назад

      You can buy one now for about 4k. Just K swap it and call it a say

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 3 года назад +3

      This car would still be in production had they put a K series in it to begin with. This engines vtec system closes two valves for every cylinder before the crossover which really sucks but Spoon sells a kit that fixes this and raises its RPM. 38K for HPD parts is a rip-off warranty or not. The HKS supercharger with Spoon vtec cam makes way more than 200hp at the crank. I can’t believe Honda thought spending R&D on making a supercharger work for this car was cheaper than just offering a non-hybrid K series model. It’s sad but during this time I think Honda’s fastest car was their Accord. Very depressing period in Honda history.

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 3 года назад

      K swapping yourself is a PITA. The better S/C kit from HKS or Jackson Racing get you better than K series power and are easy to install. Honda should’ve just made a K series edition for a couple grand more.

      same cuz I got the later 2014 LiON one, which does rotate when you lift off as it has more power than the original one. not much but 135bhp is fine, especially here in the UK.

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 3 года назад +1

      There is, all you need is the HKS gt2 supercharger kit, Spoon camshaft that keeps all 4 valves open before Vtec crossover, and a Hondata tune. The HKS car makes 320hp and runs a 1:04 at Tsukuba. It has adjustable HKS coil overs, the same coil overs used on their record setting Evo. I forget which brake kit it uses though. I think the front tires are 245’s. The CR-Z is an easy car to make fast. Just stay away from any Honda or CR-Z forum and look overseas. Those forums are toxic.

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 3 года назад +1

      For exhaust is maintains the catalytic converters but has the HKS hi-power. You can search for the car on RUclips but it’s in Japanese.

    A CR-Z with its stock 136hp is quite enough for a commuter and the HPD's 197hp is also quite good for a 1,5-litre car.
    What you keep forgetting is that if you put a 350lb blob on the driver's seat, anything below supercar level will feel slow.

    You can buy the supercharger kit from and honda dealership for $5500. You still get to keep your full length warranty too. Put it on yourself. No real need to spend boat loads of money on shocks and other accessories. Unless you're in to that. Just throw it on a used CRZ if you have one. Supercharging isn't nearly as difficult as putting on a turbo

      maximus9401 definitely being serious, obviously 5k is a little steep, but it is OEM so that means warrantied by honda. Good luck super charging this car by yourself for less than 4k and it definitely would void any warranty.
      EDIT:

      An ex starts at 24k, adding foglights, spoiler, splashguards, wheel locks, and the rear diffuser added 2k, It reaches close to 27 with all the ricer accessories (will admit it looks ok, wouldn't want it as my daily though). So if you figure in the supercharger, ecu, brakes, etc...it'll touch 38 pretty easy.
      Cut and pasted from honda's website. They WON'T list the price for some reason so we're left to speculate.

      But would you choose one of these over it as a daily driver? Especially for those of us in colder climates where rwd+snow=stuck, a fair bit (I get stuck in my AWD here sometimes, and we have crazy ridiculous hills).
      Just looking ahead to the further hybridization and electrification of cars, I'm a tech and I think it would be a great starting point, and eventually get some more current through that 'IMA' (also want to 'reverse engineer' it/one and pop it on a rotary or something for that low end torque/added 'efficiency')
      Srs question though as prices are pretty close for me up here in canada. Plus there are SOOOO many FRS/BRZ(s) where I live (work at Subbie dealership, service(d) a fair few), hell even a guy in my Auto Tech class owned one... lol

    Honda should have done something like the b16 vtec that had 180hp and then put the ima hybrid system witch adds power and then the supercharger on top of that. it would have had something like 220-230hp at least and would have been sweet. or even do what they where saying they where going to do to the new integra and add 2 rear 50hp 50ftlb electric motors on the back. that would make it about 280hp and it would have a super strong low rpm power from the electric motors. just a thought

    • @JohnSmith-wx9wj
      @JohnSmith-wx9wj 4 года назад

      Yes. I thought about getting one of these cheap on the used market, and replacing everything in it and adding the supercharger myself. Supercharger 5k, improved battery is 1.2k, exhaust is another thousand, and let's say another thousand for intake and cooling. A few hundred for a throttle body and engine rebuild kit (who knows how the previous owner treated it) a few hundred for rebuilding the interior and... I've spent a monstrous amount of time and money to get roflstomped by a ecoboost mustang. I still want to get one, but I'm just going to put a lewd anime wrap on it.

      The crazy thing is, my 06 SI can get 40mpg if I drive it at 55mph (which, I know is super slow) but I had to follow someone in a trailer on a 800mi move. And it got 40mpg. It has 197hp, FWD, 6spd manual, etc.. Its a 2 door, and still can hold more stuff than a CRZ. All the meanwhile, costing me $12000 when it had 45k miles on it in 2011 (90k on the clock now) I mean, why the hell would I spend $38000 on a new car that has same amount of horsepower and roughly same mpg? Only thing I've done is put a set of new tires on it, and just did the brakes for the first time. Original everything else. I had the factory recall on control arms. And they gave me new set of tires for it. So I'd say get a used Si, plan on spending money for a new clutch plus install, because primarily kids like to romp on them pretty hard. And then take the rest of your money and save it for something that is actually fast. There aren't many cars that cost under $15k that get over 30mpg and are fun to drive.

    does the "HPD" mean it's a dealer option, or are these just aftermarket parts? I mean, if you for whatever reason decided to buy a CRZ and now you get tuning parts with factory warranty, there's nothing wrong about that. But buying a new car like that for that kind of money... it does not make any sense.

      Yes slow...relatively speaking. For that price tag, you could have an STI with 300 horsepower, a 370Z with ~330 horsepower, or hell, a Camaro SS or Mustang GT with 420+ horsepower. This car should be no more than 23-25k, where cars like the Fiesta ST and Mini Cooper S are.

      I'm not going to front though-- the interior design of the CRZ is still my favorite because it's so driver focused (reminds of me S2K's driver focused interior) but it sucks they never thought to make the car's weight their main focus for this car. That way-- they would be able achieve the gas mileage and performance status they were seeking.

    If you want to make the CR-Z faster than a K swap, go with the HKS GT2 supercharger, Spoon cam that allows all 4 valves to open precrossover, and the Hondata. So much cheaper than the lower quality HPD parts and will produce more than 250hp at the wheels whereas HPD only makes 197hp at the crank (yawn). 20 years later and Honda manages to achieve just about the same power to weight for the price of a lightly used Corvette Z06. This is why I protest Honda ever rehashing an S2000. It’ll be crap.

    I'd take a used Chevy Volt instead of a CRZ and hack it to have the engine help with acceleration when in hold mode so 0-60 in 6.5 seconds or so and also put in a Cruze rear sway bar. Josh Hespeler of the Chevy Volt Owners Facebook group has done the sway bar mod.

    HPD Front Brake Kit (45250-F27S-A04) - $1,530.00
    HPD Sport Exhaust (18300-F27S-A05) - $1,164.00
    HPD Rear Diffuser (71502-F27S-A02) - $288.00
    HPD Sport Suspension (51200-F27S-A00) - $1,110.00
    HPD Limited Slip Differential (41100-F27S-A20) - $990.00
    HPD Sport Clutch (22000-F27S-A01) - $462.00
    HPD Supercharger Price (06100-F27S-A00) - $4,995.00
    Total: $10,539.00
    These are the actual retail prices you should expect to pay to load up a CR-Z with HPD parts when buying parts online. Way off from what is claimed in the video... Buying from a dealer and having them install it is where you will get bent over. The total does not include the HPD spoiler, HPD decals or HPD wheels, which are optional preferences that will not have much benefit to performance.
    While it still might not have enough performance in the straights for those guys who like to compensate for their lacking driving skills, the CR-Z is a very formidable beast in the corners. Yes, I agree it comes from the factory with very mild performance capability, but it does have a ton of potential if you are willing to mod, which if you are buying a car to track/autocross/etc. you will be spending several thousand dollars anyways no matter what car you buy. The only difference is that the CR-Z stands to gain so much more from those mods, because you are starting with so much less. Modding a car that's already set up for good performance, means you are replacing already pretty good parts for slightly better parts, while with the CR-Z you are replacing "hybridy" parts with waaaay better parts.
    I'm one of the few who tracks his CR-Z and does autocross events, as well as a yearly visit to the Tail of the Dragon, so if you want to see some videos of someone doing those things with a modded CR-Z, check out my RUclips Channel...
    Anyway, I rather enjoy the "black sheep" status of the CR-Z, because the type of people who are insecure about their masculinity and those who need to puff up their huge egos are pretty much non-existent in our community. I am literally the biggest jerk on our forum and I'm still pretty tame in the realm of internet "assholery". Keep on hating guys; it only encourages us and it reaffirms that we chose the right car...

      Don't get me wrong, I like the CR-Z, and I'm strongly considering getting one as a daily (hence why I'm watching this video). It's never going to be a performance bargain though. Straight line performance shouldn't be dismissed either. If you want to have a fast track car, it needs to be able to accelerate quickly. Momentum helps for sure, but you can't get much of it without some power. Autocross is a different story of course, and I bet the CR-Z would do quite well at that with a few upgrades.
