My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

Thank you! That’s definitely the dream, but we’ll have to wait/work a bit more to get there. But we’re definitely super close, except for the washing clothes, you’ll see ;)
The hole in the corner of the kitchen will be a chimney flue for a wood cook stove, could be a great way of getting heat down there for either short term or long term..... amazing progress well done to you both....

Think about natural fireplaces in such old buildings. Avoids mold and has so much atmosphere.

Yes, I agree. The stove would look great in the corner, with all the cabinets along the wall. No upper cabinets, just open shelves.

Be careful putting your new stuff into a damp and still not solved- wet room, can easily make it rot or get fungi inside...
True, good one. I think that the dampness is due to warmer air entering the colder basement. Also probably due to the fact that the air gap is full of stuff. Which is what we are going to tackle as well

Why didn’t you power wash the kitchen tiles & brick ceiling, than paint walls before installing kitchen? Easy way of finishing it.

I have just started watching your renovations, love the home. It will be beautiful when finish. My concern is why are you not wearing masks when cleaning out mouse, rat poo. And in the drainage around the house. All this can cause serious lung disease. Black mold. 😢
I made this mistake too, regrettably I didn’t wear a mask working on my house. In 1982 masks during DIY weren’t typically worn.

Please don't place your stove directly in front of the window. You'll want to open and close it with ease and not have to worry about anything on top of the stove. I think you'll be much happier that way. DA

That is more of an American thing. In Italy the shutters open out and if there is a sink in the way, you can’t get to the shutters. Some windows don’t have them. I didn’t realize this when I was designing my kitchen in Toscana. My estate agent let me know. Your process is amazing!! The house has really great details. Can’t wait to see it come along.
