The face that you guys were checking out at 13:42 into the video is most likely an example of what was known as The Green Man of The Forest, hence the leaves around him and also coming from his mouth. This is a tradition that goes back into Pagan times and relates to a beleif in a green nature god of the forest and was also linked to early sightings in the woods of what we might call Bigfoot today. It was often depicted in medieval churches as a nod to the pagan worship of nature from the days before the Romans came to England and implemented Christianity. This is similar to how the native people in Mexico would sneak images of their gods into the early Catholic churches. I learned this from Deborah Hatwell who runs a RUclips channel that covers this subject.I beleive there are also elements of the Green Man mythology that are connected to Herne the Hunter as well. Cheers!

Horatio Nelson is buried in the crypt of St Paul's cathedral, in a black marble sarcophagus originally made for cardinal Wolsey (but not used).
Nelson had an illegitimate daughter (Horatia) by Emma Hamilton.
Nelson's titles died with him as he had no legitimate male heir. Nelson's older brother William was subsequently (1806) awarded two titles, and later, the Trafalgar estate.
Viscount Horatio Nelson's estate was at Merton Park in South London. It is now covered by modern housing.
Emma Hamilton died in reduced circumstances in France in 1815. She was not supported by the British government and could not afford to keep living at Merton Park. Nelson had wanted her to be given a state pension. His wishes were ignored.
Horatia married a vicar and had 10 children before her death in 1881.
Nelson was not a wealthy man although his family had been prosperous and well connected. Nelson struggled to keep up with his and Emma Hamilton's expenditure at Merton Park. He had spent long periods not on active service - so was on reduced pay.
There are living descendants of the Nelson family.
I would love to know more about the Trafalgar estate that this church forms a part of. The church should be maintained.
I know Wantage well. I had no idea that a descendant of the Nelson family was a curate at the parish church in the 1850s.

The outside masonry of limestone blocks intermixed with smaller squares of intricately-fitted knapped flints is very nice looking. The town in which Trafalgar House/Park now stands is the ancient land of Standlynch which is said to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. The chapel looks like it was built upon the site of an earlier 12th century chapel. If it is restored, hopefully the stained glass window over the altar is unblocked and reglazed. It would be a great experience for perhaps the local college to offer tuition or credit bonuses for intern volunteering to help a team of profressionals restore this holy place. Also the burying grounds look like it needs a good weeding. (It looks like from the plaque commemorating the last restoration in 1914 that it may be have rechristened as Catholic? (due to the AMGD acroynm (Ad Majorem Gloria Deam)?) Would make a great wedding chapel (with fees to pay for continued upkeep and salaries) win-win! Always remember our dead countrymen and countrywomen as usually by 40 years after their passing, family members have either died off, moved away, or just plain forgot these graves were there. Let us all remember.

I moved to this area nearly 30 years ago and have walked past the church many times, aware of the Nelson connection. The latest date I’ve seen on a gravestone was the 1940s. Interestingly, when I moved here I was told that the local pronunciation of ‘Trafalgar’ is more like Traffle-gar. Don’t know why. Also the graveyard is beautiful in spring, firstly with masses of snowdrops on one side of the church then, a little later, the other side is full of daffodils. I’ve never known the church to be open so hadn’t seen what the interior was like, until now

Taraf Al-ghar was the Moorish name for Cape Trafalgar, its supposed to mean headland of the cave, or laurel. If you add a ‘b’ to the end of the name, Taraf Al-gharb it means headland of the west. Take your pick as nothing is conclusive.
Maybe the locals opted for the old pronunciation out of snobbery, or respect 👍🏻

It reads "Osmond. Sculpt. Sarum" meaning Osmond, Sculptor (from the latin sculpere "to carve". The past participle means "one who carves". Sarum derives from the latin word for Salisbury "Sarisberia". Salisbury is technically "New Sarum" and the original site is known as "old Sarum". Old Sarum was moved gradually from about 1220 (building in New Sarum began a little earlier). Even though uninhabited Old Sarum returned 2 members of parliament (one in the 18th century was William Pitt the elder. It was the most rotten of the 'Rotten Boroughs' until abolished by the 1832 Reform Act. Interestingly, the 4th Earl Nelson was a Catholic and Standlynch Church was rededicated to Mary Queen of Angels and St. Michael and All the Angels in 1914. The entire estate was sold in 1948. Death duties and high post-second world war income taxes have seen many such estates fall into ruin. The National Trust can only do so much unfortunately.

Fantastic explore gents. The vault or crypt under the church floor would be amazing to see, they
would have used lead lined coffins I have seen them in place in crypts from the early 1800,s. .
The galvanised tank in the side room would not have been a toilet supply but a cold water storage
tank for the radiators and boiler. Not nit picking at all . I agree with and others its heatbreaking to

Pulled this of Google, yew tree, It was sacred to Hecate, Ancient Greek Goddess of Death, Witchcraft and Necromancy, and was said to purify the dead as they entered the underworld of Hades. Celtic druids also saw yew as sacred and planted it close to their temples to use in death rituals.

Beautiful little family Church and graveyard. The vaults would have remains of coffins and possibly bones in them, they collapse after so many years due to the natural earth subsidence with continuous rain etc. Most of them have an arch above the doors or are bricked up to stop wild life getting in. This is a historic building and should be listed with The Historic Trust to save it. The whole area and land originally would have been owned by the Nelson family for sure. I would live to see some of the old maps for this area and what buildings were there in the past. Thank you so much for this very interesting video, well done. 💕🇦🇺
