    A fitting mantra for sure. The obstacle: buying a piece of raw land 750 miles from where we live (a rental, we've rented our entire lives) and building a home with my own hands. The Way: The mental challenge was the hardest part asking myself "What are you thinking?" There is only one way. Hard work, determination, perserverance and a belief that "Yes, I can do this". It's now five years since I made that commitment. I raised our Timber Frame Mountain Cabin frame last October and put the roof on in May (all from lumber I milled myself). Just dogged determination and to top it off? I am having the time of my life (I'm 65). What an adventure and I'm sharing it with those I love. My two sons, their families and my wife. It doesn't get any better.

      For me, listening to philosophical books or any other on Audible at work has been life changing. I've listened to many of them multiple times that I never likely would have sat down to read in text. At least not the first time through. Hearing authors like Ryan or Donald Robertson reading their own works is sometimes a really nice bonus.

    • @mezzuna
      @mezzuna 3 года назад

      @@1John3.8 which would be your favourite that is the most straight forward to understand? I know philosophy is dense but I'm trying to start listening to more of these

    • @mezzuna

      @Higher Image Status it's an autobiography by Matthew McConaughey. It's not exactly high level philosophy, but he does have some interesting anecdotes about tripping on ecstasy drifting down the Amazon after having a wet dream persuading him to go there. His life is just interesting, and he tells it well

    • @1John3.8
      @1John3.8 3 года назад +1

      @@mezzuna Donald Robertson's "How to Think like a Roman Emperor" was my introduction to Stoicism and really philosophy in general. The way it connects historical stories with practical ways to improve via ancient and modern techniques alike made it very easy to absorb. It's a pleasure to listen to and provides a wealth of information without ever feeling dull or excessive.
      From there I followed up with the Meditations and Enchiridion and Discourses for some direct source material from Stoics. Ego is the Enemy was a good one and offered some fresh perspectives, and I believe I listened to it on RUclips.
      Without offense to Ryan, I personally recommend starting with Donald's book, and if you read/listen all the way through it's possible you'll have some new sources or philosophers in mind that you enjoy and want to follow up with.

    I own the hard copy and have listened to the audio version on Audible at least 8 times (yesterday on a 5 hour road trip was most recent). I also have Ego Is The Enemy and Stillness Is The Key but The Obstacle is my go to when I need to overcome those things that are beyond my regular arsenal. Listening to it calms me instantly and it never takes long before I have my perspective back. I have no doubt I will have a good deal of the book memorized at some point as I know I will continue to go back to it. I carry the box set of the 3 around with me as well as The Daily Stoic Meditations and refer to them daily.
